• Samba installation failed on ubuntu 12.10

• How to recover broken dpkg after lucid-bleed ppa-purge?

  Did a ppa-purge of lucid-bleed and dpkg didn't downgrade properly and now it is broken. dpkg: PreDepends: tar (>= 1.23) but 1.22-2ubuntu1 is to be installed What scares me is when simulating the removal of dpkg I get: Removing this package may render the system unusable. Are you sure you want to do that? and then the list of packages which depend on it, which will also be removed, is obviously very long. Is it safe for me to remove dpkg just to reinstall it? How would I ensure the list of packages which were also removed are then reinstalled? Will forcing the version of dpkg help? (FYI: simulating a forced version brings up a much smaller list of applications which will also be removed). Any other suggestions? • Managing accounts on a private website for a real-life community

  Hey Pro Webmasters, I'm looking at setting-up a walled-in website for a real-life community of people, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with managing member accounts for this kind of thing. Some conditions that must be met: This community has a set list of real-life members, each of whom would be eligible for one account on the website. We don't expect or require that they all sign-up. It is purely opt-in, but we anticipate that many of them would be interested in the services we are setting up. Some of the community members emails are known, but some of them have fallen off the grid over the years, so ideally there would be a way for them to get back in touch with us through the public-facing side of the site. (And we'd want to manually verify the identity of anyone who does so). Their names are known, and for similar projects in the past we have assigned usernames derived from their real-life names. This time, however, we are open to other approaches, such as letting them specify their own username or getting rid of usernames entirely. The specific web technology we will use (e.g. Drupal, Joomla, etc) is not really our concern right now -- I am more interested in how this can be approached in the abstract. Our database already includes the full member roster, so we can email many of them generated links to a page where they can create an account. (And internally we can require that these accounts be paired with a known member). Should we have them specify their own usernames, or are we fine letting them use their registered email address to log-in? Are there any paradigms for walled-in community portals that help address security issues if, for example, one of their email accounts is compromised? We don't anticipate attempted break-ins being much of a threat, because nothing about this community is high-profile, but we do want to address security concerns. In addition, we want to make the sign-up process as painless for the members as possible, especially given the fact that we can't just make sign-ups open to anyone. • Errors when attempting to install vim on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my computer few days back. from then i tried to install few programs through Ubuntu software center but it showed that no internet connection even though i was connected to internet. Then i came to know that vi editor will be required to set the system configuration in which i will be able to save my password and proxy. apart from that i also tried to install the programs through terminal but still same problem occurred as it says this is not a candidate for install. i tried to install Vim using command sudo apt-get instal Vim-nox but it shows that broken package and showed many failures. please help me out of this.... thank you

• hp XW8000 work station power supply

  My power supply went up in the XW8000 and I bought a new corsair cx500. I installed it but when I hook it up and I turn the computer on I get a beeping noise from the computer. I looked at the old power supply and the new power supply. The only difference is that the new power supply has 500 watts and the old one is 450 watts and the old PSU has a brown wire and the new power supply has 2 orange wires at the end. I found out that it is a sense wire that is in a different location so I was wondering how do I fix this problem.

• How do I hire testers by giving them a buggy app for testing their efficiency?

  My boss wants to recruit testers based on their testing efficiency (number of bugs identified). So, he's shortlisted 5 people and I need to give them an app full of bugs and see how they fare in reporting obvious bugs, and hidden bugs. I know.... it kind of sounds weird. I guess, this is just like the coding world, where you hire a programmer by assessing his/her programming ability (which is a little easier). Once hired, these testers would be testing a java swing app, so their familiarity of testing frameworks/tools is not really required. So, my question here is - How do I go about finding buggy apps (web/non-web), preferably java ones, that I can have the shortlisted testers have a go at? How would you go about this task if your boss asks you to do so? I am kind of clueless at this point - I googled a bit, thought about finding new apps on sourceforge with lots of bugs, but both approaches didn't work for me.

• Expected time for an CakePHP MVC form/controller and db make up

  I would like to know, what is an average time for building a form in MVC pattern with for example CakePHP. I build 8 functions, two of them do custom queries, return json data, split them, expand them in a model in memory and delivers to the view. Those are three queries if you consider and an array to feed view for making some combo box. Why? all these, because I have data from json and I split them in order to make row of data like a table. Like that I changed a bit the edit.ctp but not a lot. And I created a javascript outside, with three functions. One collects data the other upon a change of a combo returnes the selected values, and does also some redirection flow. All this, in average how much time should it take ?

• AHCI Hotswap in Lucid Server

  Does Lucid support hotswapping of AHCI devices? Is there anything more to it than simply unmounting all filesystems on the drive to be disconnected and plugging in the new disk? 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801IR/IO/IH (ICH9R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 02) is the controller I'm working with. BIOS is set to AHCI. I also tried simply unmounting and unplugging. That seemed to work fine. Plugging in a new drive locked up the system. AHCI kernel module is also loaded. I've also looked at the Raid WIKI on kernel.org which talks about hardware requirements for AHCI HotSwapping of disks. My drives and cables all appear to meet the criteria, but most of that info pertains to the electrical side (grounding, etc...).

• USB Mouse sleeping after 5 seconds when on battery

  My usb mouse sleeps after 5 seconds of inactivity when running on battery power. It wakes uo again when i press any button on the mouse. This is really annoying. I have made lsusb, and I noticed my mouse is Bus 001 Device 012: ID 04d9:2083 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. I have checked my /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/autosuspend but it is already set to 0, and the directory usb1 has many subdirectories which also have autosuspend files, and i dont know how to edit them. Also, I would like a permanent solution, which would work for any mouse, on any of my 3 usb ports. Any ideas? Using: Ubuntu 12.04 64bit

• New website - best practice for requirements specs? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Extracting user requirements from a person who does not know how to express himself As a hobby freelancer I'm new to this. I've never had a non-technical client before explain to me what his future website is supposed to do. A person wants me to make a website for him and he basically explained to me what's it about. However, he's not a technical person and he just doesn't understand what I need to know and how to properly describe/explain it to me. When I ask him how a user is supposed to submit an entry to the website he told me "He fills out a form.", which is not really helping me. This was just an example, it goes on for other sections of the website as well which are a lot harder to explain. The website will be aimed at a specific professional user demographic and I have no clue about their profession and how their industry works. I tried to find some good Product Requirements Document templates on Google but none of them really seemed like they could help him understand how to write it so I can understand what he wants/needs. Can somebody please give me a hint on how to deal with such non-technical clients?

• Easiest Way To Implement "Slow Motion" and variable game speed in XNA?

  I have an XNA 4.0 game that I want to be able to switch into slow motion and back again to full speed every now and then. So if you kill an enemy the game switches into slow motion as they explode and then goes back to normal. What is the easiest way to do this in XNA 4.0 without having to alter all my existing code that relies on GameTime? I have some code that relies on the TotalGameTime, which will be wrong unless I get XNA to slow down. Is there anyway to avoid refactoring that code? Thanks!

• Right mix of planning and programing on a new project

  I am about to start a new project (a game, but thats unimportant). The basic idea is in my head but not all the details. I don't want to start programming without planning, but I am seriously fighting my urge to just do it. I want some planning before to prevent refactoring the whole app just because a new feature I could think of requires it. On the other hand, I don't want to plan multiple months (spare time) and start that because I have some fear that I will lose my motivation in this time. What I am looking for is a way of combining both without one dominating the other. Should I realize the project in the way of scrum? Should I creating user stories and then realize them? Should I work feature driven? (I have some experience in scrum and the classic "specification to code" way.)

• Will SRS be sufficient enough for the programmers to do their work, without the additional overhead of FS?

  We always make 2 documents the SRS (Software Requirement Specification) and the FS (Functional Specifications) documents for the coders aka programmers. As I have examined the SRS is more like containing both functional and non-functional requirements as compared to the FS that deals only with the functional requirements. To cut it short will the SRS be sufficient enough for the programmers to do their work? and not make any FS anymore?

• Can/should one record unstructured suggestions and feedback in an issue tracker?

  I'd like to advocate the use of issue-tracking software within an organisation that currently does not use it. But there's one aspect of their situation for which I'm unsure of what to suggest: their projects frequently receive informal verbal feedback or casual comments in meetings or in passing from a wide group of interested parties, and all this information needs to be recorded. Most of these messages are noise, but they're vital to record and share with developers for two reasons: Good suggestions often come out of this process. It can be necessary to have evidence of clients' comments when they forget previous instructions or change their mind. Is this the sort of information that should be stored in an issue-tracking system, or kept apart in a separate solution? Are there issue-tracking systems that have particularly good support for this sort of unstructured information?

• What are some general guidelines for setting up an iOS project I will want to personally publish but sell in the future?

  I have an idea for a personal iOS project that I would like to write and release to the iOS store. I'm the type of developer who enjoys developing and publishing. I want to write quality software and take care of my customers. Assuming that I wrote an application that had reasonable success, there is a fair chance that I would want to sell the ownership rights of the app to another party and I'd use the proceeds to develop my next personal project which, in turn, I'd probably want to sell in the future. With that said, what are some general guidelines for creating, making and publishing an iOS project that I will eventually want to transfer to another company/developer? I know this is a bit of a broad question, but I request that the given advice be a general list of tips, suggestions and pitfalls to avoid. If any particular bullet point on your list needs more explanation, I'll either search for the answer or post a new question specific to that requirement. Thank you!   An executive at my workplace asked me and my group of developers the question: How many lines of code can a C# developer produce per month? An old system was to be ported to C# and he would like this measure as part of the project planning. From some (apparently creditable) source he had the answer of "10 SLOC/month" but he was not happy with that. The group agreed that this was nearly impossible to specify because it would depend on a long list of circumstances. But we could tell that the man would not leave (or be very disappointed in us) if we did not come up with an answer suiting him better. So he left with the many times better answer of "10 SLOC/day" Can this question be answered? (offhand or even with some analysis)

• Can we put percentage on amount of work of a certain role in project's lifecycle?

  The title may be confusing, but I will elaborate it here. I am trying to figure our how much time and effort each person spend during some project. I divided roles into: - junior developer (works mainly on UI and some light things) - senior developer (develops complex logic, database structures, etc.) - lead developer (leads the team, usually most experienced person) - negotiator/resolver (a person who directly talk to a client trying to either negotiate terms and timeframe or to clarify vagueness presented by a team leader) My AIM is to calculate percentage of role's involvement based on quality, not time (obviously a junior will spend most time in project, but with the least quality). In the end I would get a table which may look like this: Total: 100% ---------------- Junior: 10% Senior: 50% Lead: 30% Negotiator: 10% Can this be achieved? Has anyone found any source which may help me?

  Suppose, just as an example, I have a website with domain www.gifts-for-dogs.com.....but after a few years I start selling stuff for Cats and Fish. I may not keep enough of a range of products for these other type of pets yet, so can't justify changing the domain name and logo (to something like gifts-for-pets.com) just yet....but envisage that I eventually may have to in the not too distant future. • CPU frequancy stuck at 1.20 GHz using TLP?

  I have installed TLP for power optimization on Ubuntu 13.10. Instructions I start computer its running fine I can change the CPU frequencies to whatever I want, but after some time it stuck on minimum frequency 1.20 GHz, I cant change that to anything else. I have tried to stop it by using sudo tlp stop but it doesn't stop. Tried even to kill its process sudo killall tlp but it seems they have a different name of process of that so i am not sure what to do now. I reported to the linrunner but cant seem to find a solution

• Program to Help Order Undated Photos

  I have a large number of photos which have the correct DateTimeOriginal set in EXIF. I have about 300 photos for which the DateTimeOriginal is completely wrong. The DateTimeOriginals of these photos are not correlated, so I cannot change their time en masse. It must be done individually. I'm looking for a program that would essentially allow me to drag and drop the incorrectly time stamped photos into their place in the sequence of correctly time stamped photos. It would be nice to then be able to have the DateTimeOriginal tag updated, or the photos renamed chronologically. Thanks!
