  Hi, I accidentally deleted a partition which mainly served as space I put my data, labeled D: drive. The partition wasn't subsequently formatted though, following the delete incident. Obviously the D: drive doesn't show up as it usually does when I run Windows 7. In the "Computer Management", on clicking the Disk Management I clearly see the space is now labled as unallocated. question: How do I go about recovering my data.   Is there a way to tell xrandr "this space intentionally left blank"? I have a laptop that drives its internal display at 1920x1080, but the external monitor I'm using, due to its different aspect ratio, doesn't have that mode. It runs at 1920x1200.   Hi, I have a new laptop which comes with window 7. I want to dual-boot it with ubuntu 9.10. I have burned the install disk of 9.10. But during the install process, I am stuck in 'setup my partition'. It has 2 options: wipe out my whole hard disk' or 'manually configure' I don't want it to wipe out my whole hard disk (i want to keep my window 7). But how can I manually configure the partition to use the free space and create a partition so that I can install ubuntu 9.10 and swap space? Thank you.

  I use carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 gig) so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

• Removing information about deleted volume

  In order to increase space in my c drive, I had to delete all my volumes and create again allocating more space to C which I did, after which my drive name G didn't exist. Before this I used to install all my softwares in G. Now since the drive does not exist, I want to remove all info about the softwares I installed in G as they got deleted when volume got deleted. I also want to install cilk++ but it gives me an error-invalid drive g:. If I insert pendrives so I get a volume named G, cilk++ installer runs but says that it will be integrated to visual studio 2008 which i previously had in G drive(but no longer exists) and doesn't show visual studio 2010 which i recently installed in C drive. How do I fix this? Please help.

To save space, I'd like to compress it but I didn't find an option to mount a compressed image.   i am having windows xp as my os. but i have raiserfs partions created by suse linux on same HDD. i need to recover data from the linux partitions now. i created opensuse live usb and booted from it. but it is showing free space in disk manager instead of linux partitions. but i accessed from one windows application(e.g Ext2Read ) which is showing linux partitions but not able to recover data from them as they are demo applications. why opensuse live usb os showing free space instead of linux partitions.   I suppose that hosters who provides unlimited mail quota are only claiming it unlimited, and hope that they won't run out of disk space. Correct me if I'm wrong. In order to do such trick they will have probably to calculate the average real quota used by the average user. Let's say on a 100 GB space hosting I offer to 20 x 1GB emails, obviously if all user fill their mail my server would stop working cause they would require 200 GB, but I think I can expect this trick to work cause it will never happen (or it's extermly unprobable) that all user fills up all their mails. But the QUESTTIONS are: What's the average email usage? Can we say that a user normally fills up 1/2 or 1/3 of the quota you provide him? Thanks to any answers/suggetions you might provide.

  I am deploying a VM using a OVA format. The size of OVA format is 57 GB. Currently free space on my datastore is 388 GB. At the time of selecting Disk Format type if shows me in red that the disk size required is 1 TB therefore you cannot select THICK provisioning. Therefore, i selected THIN provisiong. It THIN provisioing i am showed that Estimated Disk Usage is 112 GB which is less than the free space available. But even after selecting THIN proviosing at the time of deployment it throws an error that it cannot create disk as the size of disk is larger than the maximum specified limit. My block size is of 1 MB. Pasting my exact error here: Failed to deploy OVF package:File [datastore1] IMS Tester 1/IMS Tester1_2.vmdk is larger than maximum size supported by datastore 'datastore1

I have started running out of space on my SSD drive, and I found that about 12% of used space is in my installer folder (holds the .msi files for all the programs that I have installed) I am looking for two things: A way to move this (or any) folder via symlink. Ideally, some powershell function that I could use to just designate a folder, a destination, and the symlink would be created in the original (pointing to the destination) In this particular case, a registry change that would allow the location to be move would also be helpful, but I would still prefer solution 1. • Moving tool bars in Acrobat X Pro

  I'm using Acrobat X pro for Windows. I found that two lines of tool bar takes too much space. So I would like to combine them into one line, or move them to left or right side. I do know that I can hide those tool bars by Ctrl+H. But I want to use them without hiding. Since most documents I use are letter size and portrait type, tool bars on the left or right side would be much more efficient way of using space. Does anybody know how I can do this? (I think I could do it in Acrobat 9..but I can't in X version)

• Need to move a debian server from i686 to x86_64 architecture

  I have a debian server that I need to move from one hosting provider to another. I don't really know how the old server was setup, all I know is that it's running a Ruby on Rails application with a lot of custom libraries installed and that I should prepare myself for a painful migration. Old server: -os: debian 5.0.9 -used disk space: 3.2GB -architecture: i686 New server: -os: debian 5.0.9 -free disk space: 10GB -architecture: x86_64 As you can see the problem is that the servers are running different architectures. Q: Is there anyway I could somehow migrate the old to the new server in a few steps (or am I just dreaming I could) ? I was thinking maybe I could: -get list of packages and gems installed on old server and use for loop to install them all on the new -copy the disk content from old to new server while excluding what is architecture-specific (the problem is that I don't really know what to exclude).

  I'm using for the first time rsync to create daily backups of my websites and I was wondering if I should overwrite the previous copy or should I create multiple copies and overwrite only the oldest one ? (I might not have enough space for that, though). I actually have also this question. Let's suppose most of files are accidentally erases.. does rsync delete all these files from the backup space because they don't exist anymore ? How does exactly work in this case ? thanks

  I have 3 instances of SQL Server 2008, each on different machines with multiple databases on each instance. I have 2 separate LUNS on my SAN for MDF and LDF files. The NDX and TempDB files run on the local drive on each machine. Is it O.K. for the 3 instances to share a same volume for the data files and another volume for the log files? I don't have thin provisioning on the SAN so I would like to not constaint disk space creating multiple volumes because I was adviced that I should create a volume (drive letter) for each instance, if not for each database. I am aware that I should split my logs and data files at least. No instance would share the actual database files, just the space on drive. Any help is appretiated.

  I attached two identical hard drives to my linux machine. Then using gparted I formated the first 1024 mb at the beginning of each drive as linux swap space. Then I went into system-administration-disk utility. In there I went to file-create-RAID array. I selected the remaining space in each of the two identical hard drives and created a striped raid array. After the array was created, a warning message appeared. It said "The partition is misaligned by 522240 bytes. This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested." What do I do now? As far as I can tell, the partitions are identical.

  Hi there, I just stumbled upon a weird problem. When I SSH into my server (centos, zsh) and I type some stuff and hit backspace It looks like a space - but internally it really deleted the characters. ls -l a Note that the space between land a is actually when I hit backspace. When I now hit return ls -a gets executed. This is only in zsh, in bash it works fine. Hope anyone has an idea what this is all about and how to fix this. Update: Only happens when using tmux/screen

• Combine OS partion with data partition on NAS4Free/FreeNAS

  I recently built a NAS4Free (formerly FreeNAS) machine using a 256MB (yes, MB) USB drive for the OS. When I did the original install, I had the bright idea of making the OS partition just big enough for the OS and a then creating a second partition using the remainder of the drive to store stuff pertaining to the OS. I never really found a use for the data partition and I ended up running out of space on the OS partition, so now I'd like to combine the partitions into a single partition. Is this something that is possible to do while everything is up and running? If it comes down to it, I can take down the machine and do a fresh install of the OS using the entire space of the USB drive, but I'd like to use this as an opportunity to better familiarize myself with FreeBSD/UNIX type systems. If this is possible, will it interfere with the NAS4Free things? The data partition shows up in the web interface under the disks section. If I end up manually changing the partitions, I'd be concerned with NAS4Free getting confused by the missing partition.

It has 3 drives C Drive: 80GB SDD Drive P Drive: 120GB SDD (for core programs) D Drive: 1TB SDD (for data and other) I have an MSDN subscription and I am the type of person that loves to install tons of software to check it out. I am very worried that installation programs are forcing me to place a large amount of files on the small C drive. I fear that I will quickly run out of space on my C drive while having ample space on my TB drive. What would you do in my shoes? I didn't select this PC or set the config up. I am wishing that the 120 SSD was my C, to give me a little more room to grow. I guess there are no magic solutions here but I am just looking for your general thoughts
