  How to create a differencing disk (a chained one) from a disk that is already a differencing image? I would like to have: W2008 (base immutable) - W2008+SQL2008 (differencing, with SQL installed) --- This I can do. - W2008+SQL2008+SharePoint (chained differencing with Sharepoint installed on top of SQL2008) There's some info about it the manual: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch05.html#diffimages Differencing images can be chained. If another differencing image is created for a virtual disk that already has a differencing image, then it becomes a "grandchild" of the original parent. The first differencing image then becomes read-only as well, and write operations only go to the second-level differencing image. When reading from the virtual disk, VirtualBox needs to look into the second differencing image first, then into the first if the sector was not found, and then into the original image.* I don't get it...

The first two toolbar items are each singular in their function and insert the following types of text. A look at the special characters available for your use. The wiki code menu. The HTML menu… And the BB code menu. Here is a quick sample using the HTML menu…much better than doing it manually. This should definitely help speed things up throughout the day. Our only disappointment during testing was not being able to add additional items (i.e. characters, tags) to the toolbar at this time. Conclusion While a new toolbar may not be for everyone this extension can certainly prove useful when you need to quickly add special characters or coding in website text areas.   Hi all, I'm trying to set up the mail server. I have problem with my SMTP authentication using sasl. I'm using postfixadmin to create my mailboxes, the password is in some kind of md5, postfixadmin config.inc.php: $CONF['encrypt'] = 'md5crypt'; $CONF['authlib_default_flavor'] = 'md5raw'; the sasl is configured like that (/etc/postfix/sasl/smtpd.conf): pwcheck_method: auxprop auxprop_plugin: sql sql_engine: mysql mech_list: plain login cram-md5 digest-md5 sql_hostnames: 127.0.0.1 sql_user: postfix sql_passwd: **** sql_database: postfix sql_select: SELECT password FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u@%r' log_level: 7 If I want to authenticate (let's say from Thunderbird) with my password, I can't. If I use hashed password from MySQL I can authenticate and send an email. So I think the problem is with hash algorithm. Do you know how to set up the SASL (or postfixadmin) to work fine together. I don't want to store my passwords in plain text...

• Win 2008 single server development environment (architecture)

  I have a few questions about a test development environment that I’m setting up on this server: Intel Core i7-920 Quadcode incl. Hyper Threading 8 GB DDR3 RAM 2x 750 GB SATA-II (probably software RAID 1) The server is going to support max 5 users, maybe 10 when stressed. I was hoping that I could run all the following products on the same server: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/ IIS SQL Server 2008 x64 (R2 when released) Team Foundation Server 2010 Sharepoint Foundation 2010 I know this sounds overkill, but remember that this is for development purpose and testing. This is not a production environment. My question if this will be possible at all? Should I run it all on one Windows 2008 installation, or should I run it in multiple virtual environments using Hyper-V? What do you think?

• Designing a Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). • Security question pertaining web application deployment

  I am about to deploy a web application (in a couple months) with the following set-up (perhaps anyways): Ubuntu Lucid Lynx with: IP Tables firewall (white-list style with only 3 ports open) Custom SSH port (like 31847 or something) No "root" SSH access Long, random username (not just "admin" or something) with a long password (65 chars) PostgreSQL which only listens to localhost 256 bit SSL Cert Reverse proxy from NGINX to my application server (UWSGI) Assume that my colo is secure (Physical access isn't my concern for the time being) Application-level security (SQL injection, XSS, Directory Traversal, CSRF, etc) Perhaps IP masquerading (but I don't really understand this yet) Does this sound like a secure setup? I hear about people's web apps getting hacked all the time, and part of me thinks, "maybe they're just neglecting something", but the other part of me thinks, "maybe there's nothing you can do to protect your server, and those things are just measures to make it a little harder for script kiddies to get in". If I told you all of this, gave you my IP address, and told you what ports were available, would it be possible for you to get in (assuming you have a penetration testing tool), or is this really protected well.

• What could cause my LAN Pings be greater than 100ms?

  I have 2 servers (Both: Windows Server 2008, Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz, 32GB RAM, 8 x 15k SAS Drives). One of them is a DC / Web server / Exchange Server, the other is a SQL Server (2008). I have a 48 port Netgear GS748T Gigabit switch. When I ping from server to server, I get ping times <1ms, great, but when I ping from a PC, I get varying pings from the occasional <1ms to 500ms!! If I log into either server and look at Task Manager, CPU usage peaks at 20%, memory usage is 100%, but I am led to believe this is normal as Exchange will just use as much as you have, and release it when requested. Network usage peaks at 1%. I really don't understand how the ping can vary that much. I know I am giving very little info, but this is all I know, I apologise, but can anyone help? In response to question, I have pinged by both IP address and hostname, no difference in ping times.

• UTF-8 encoding problem with flash mysql and php

  Hi, As you may know, I am programming an on-line game using FLASH. I am connecting my FLASH 8 movie with MySQL database through PHP. I am doing very good in that, and I have everything working fine. The problems come when I am trying to insert (Using the INSERT SQL func) data to the database that are non-english. In other words, UTF-8 data. I red a lot of articls about that stuff and found and apply the fallowing: 1. In PHP4, you need to tell the PHP to use UTF-8 when using the xml_parser_crater() func, however, in PHP5 that is done automatically. Even though I told PHP5 to use the UTF-8 when calling the func. Adding the header to the XML sent to PHP from flash. Force the FLASH to use UTF-8 encoding in the preference options. Set the encoding in MySQL to UTF-8 (utf8_unicode_ci with InnoDB engine). I can read and insert the other language data correctly in the phpadmin as well. I did all that in my coding, and still I can't insert such data. one more strange thing is that, when I use the same link, that the FLASH using, with the XML, that the FLASH creating, on the browser (google chrome), I got the data inserted right in the database!!!!! I am about to get crazy about that stuff, What am I missing? what cause the problem? Thank you in advance.

• I would like to prevent these entries from being added to the eventlog.

  Our client's application EventLog is getting filled up with warnings due to a bug in the Microsoft SQL Server report viewer control, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973219. They have thousands of users running reports so this is making their eventlog hard to use and they want them removed on a frequent basis. I tried using PowerShell to remove the events, but that does not seem possible. Is there a way to prevent these entries from being written to the event log in the first place? I'm thinking I would like to filter out events where event source="ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0", eventId ="1309" and Message contains "Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd"

• MacBook Pro for Windows development via virtualization. Performance?

  I am a Windows/Web developer by profession and I have been considering a MacBook Pro as a replacement for my current development machine. I am impressed by the build quality, the uni-body construction and performance specs of the MacBook Pro. I am specifically interested in the 13.3" MacBook Pro running Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor with 4 GB RAM. What I am wondering is this ... what performance can I expect running SQL Server 2008, IIS, and Visual Studio 2010 within a virtual environment (VMWare Fusion and Windows 7) on the above mentioned MacBook Pro? I like the 13.3" model as the size is more portable, but am I expecting to much from a core 2 duo processor? Would I need to look at the next step up in MacBook Pro using the core i5 processor? Thanks!

• Natively boot Virtualbox Image

  I am faced with a Windows hardware/software problem left over from another person. It's on me to resolve. It's a mission critical setup. The situation is: I've got a physical server machine with: -Disk C:\ (one disk) containing a basic install of Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly Win Vista Pro, now gone. -Disk D:\ (software Raid) containing a VirtualBox disk image of a configured Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server R2 among others. What shall I do now? Migrate all the stuff from the configured VM to the basic but natively installed C:\ Windows Server 2008 R2 (with the possibility of breaking stuff)? Or, Setting up the machine to "natively boot" the VM with the help of bcdedit.exe (something I've read about, what I've never done, what I don't know of if it works, if it hits performance, or if it is stable for production) For me, being old skool, I am in the process of de-virtualising everything (option 1). But I'd be happy if someone suggests I am ok to go down the "natively boot" route.

• Checking if your SIMPLE databases need a log backup

  Hopefully you have read the blog by William Durkin explaining why your SIMPLE databases need a log backup in some cases. There is a SQL Server bug that means in some cases databases are marked as being in SIMPLE RECOVERY but have a log wait type that shows they are not properly configured. Please read his blog for the full explanation and a great description of how to reproduce the issue. As part of our (William happens to be my Boss) work to recover our affected databases I wrote this small PowerShell script to quickly check our servers for databases that needed the attention that William details.  cls $Servers = “Server01″,”Server02″,”etc”,”etc” foreach($Server in $Servers){ write-host “************” $server “****************”     $server = New-Object Microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.server $Server     foreach($db in $Server.databases){         $db | where {$_.RecoveryModel -eq “Simple” -and $_.logreusewaitstatus -ne “nothing”} | select name, LogReuseWaitStatus     } } If you get any results from this query then you should consult Williams blog for the details on what action you should take. This script does give out false positives if in some circumstances depending on how busy your databases are. Hopefully this will let you check your servers quickly and if you find any problems you can reference Williams blog to understand what you need to do.

This server is used almost exclusively for inbound connections. It hosts a web server (IIS 6), SQL server, and file server (via LAN UNC paths and mapped drives). How do I make best use of inbound bandwidth across both NICs? For example, if I connect to it by hostname and one of the interfaces has high traffic, I'd like the new connection to use the other interface.

In one scenario, when directly accessing it (E:\folder\file.xxx) we get 45MBps throughput to a video file. If we access the same file on the same array, but through UNC path (\server\folder\file.xxx) we get about 23MBps throughput with the exact same test. Obviously the second test is going through more layers of the stack, but that's a major performance hit. What tuning should we be looking at for making the UNC path be closer in performance to the direct access case? Thanks, Kirk (corrected: it is CIFS not SMB, but generalized title to 'file share'.) (additional info: this happens during the read from a single file, not an issue across multiple connections. the file is on the local machine, but exposed via file share. so client and file server are both same Windows 2008 server.)

  I'm getting the above mentioned error when backing up with ZRM, which is using mysqldump for backup. mysqldump --opt --extended-insert --single-transaction --create-options --default-character-set=utf8 --user=" " -p --all-databases "/nfs/backup/mysql01/dailyrun/20091216043001/backup.sql" mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes when dumping table TICKET_ATTACHMENT at row: 2286 I have increased the size for 'max_allowed_packet' to be 1G in /etc/my.cnf which is the server setting and for the client side setting I've set it by running this command: mysql -u -p --max_allowed_packet=1G And I have verified that on the client and server side they are of the same value. I am frustrated of not having a good Linux GUI administration and development tool for PostgreSQL. pgAdmin III is buggy and unusable piece of... hmm, software, compared to Windows-only PostgreSQL Maestro and EMS PostgreSQL manager. phpPgaAmin does not looks promising. EMS PostgreSQL manager can work under Wine, but such setup have a number of issues. Requirements are: Table data editing and browsing for large tables (1M+), able to jump by FK or some master-slave editing, GUI filtering and so on. ER diagrams with in-place schema editing Schema editing and browsing with all useful GUI support Schema changes log to put into DB versioning (migrations script). Tabbed interface to be able to work with a number of tables and SQL queries at once. And so on. Any ideas?

• Access losing db connections

  I have a weird problem going on at work. People have been using MS Access to connect to sql server db and lately people are getting sporadic problems with connecting to the servers. It's not always the same users and it's not always a problem, which makes it a real pain to try to solve. One example of a related problem. A person has a linked table to a table and she would filter the table or write a query on the table to return where itemsku = 'ABCD1234'. It would return one record but the ItemSku LMKN7486 and everytime it would return the wrong record but consistently the wrong record so itemsku abcd1234 always returned LMNK7486 One would think it might be a driver problem, but it also could be a user problem. Just posting the question to see if anyone else has had similar senerios. Thanks

  I have an Ubuntu 12.04 64bit server setup under Hyper-V. I have installed Pervasive 64bit SQL drivers so that a stock-updater script can run daily (Updates external MySQL database from another local server running Exchequer software / PSQL database). • Can I use access used by Visual Basic for building a database [on hold]

  I am the only programmer where I work (summer job) and I am a student with only a few years of programming experience. So I was asked to build a database and I am very excited about this project because hopefully I can learn a lot from this. Using this database my manager is supposed to be able to assign work (dealing with businesses) to different people within the company using an interface (all workers have a shared drive). When workers are done with that paperwork related to the business, they can check off that its done, add comments at the bottom of the interface, and then move on to the next business. The only experience I've had with databases is some querying with SQL, and I've built GUI interfaces with JAVA. The information on the interface will be populated from Excel so workers know what businesses they are dealing with. I've done some research and I believe the best way to build this would be building a GUI using Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual Basic) first, then figuring out a way to populate the Interface from Excel. Also because the data is pretty straight forward and not complicated I will be using MS Access to store and track the database. I know this won't be easy, but for all you geniuses out there, is this on the right path? Thanks.

• SBS 08 Backup fail

  Hi, I'm trying to backup my SBS 08 (only C:) with Windows Server Backup. It fails a few minutes after it started : Backup started at '08/12/2009 1:27:23 PM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348022'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved. In the EventViewer i have lots of error : VSS : 12289 SQLVDI : 1 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 18210 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 3041 SQLWRITER : 24583 All VSS ans SQL services are started. I have WSUS 3.0, Exchange 07. I don't have any third party backup software running at the same time. Thanks for your help !
