  • Hudson build defaults

    This has been a fairly long-standing problem for us with our Hudson installation, and searching around the Hudson Wiki / Issue Tracker hasn't yielded any insight to this. The question: Is it possible to set certain default values for a maven2 build in Hudson? For example, we want all our projects to run the "clean" goal before a build, we want all our builds to poll the SCM hourly, and we want all our builds to deploy to our maven repository on build success. Right now, we have to manually set these setting for every project individually, which can be rather time consuming as we have 30+ different projects all being managed by Hudson. This is especially annoying if we need to change a particular setting that will affect all projects (e.g. change the repository URL). Given that I couldn't find any mention of this on the Wiki or Issue Tracker leads me to believe that I'm missing something obvious, but I cannot find an answer on my own.

  • Ruby on Rails testing: How can I test or at the very least see a form_for's error_messages_for?

    I'm working on creating a tests, and I can't figure out why the creation of a model from a form_for is failing in the test but works in real browsers. Is there a straightforward way for me to see what the problems are in the model creation? Even better would be, is there a straightforward way for me to test the error outputs that I access via error_messages_for? In that case, I'd like to also add in tests that make sure that malformed forms are outputting the correct errors.

    I have created two Hudson String Parameters in my parametrized build configuration: svnRoot, and svnBranch. I can reference these just fine when specifying my Repository URL: ${svnRoot}/${svnBranch}/subProject. But I have not been able to reference them as part of my Grails Build Target: "build-applet ${svnRoot}/${svnBranch}/appletProject username password" "war --non-interactive". build-applet invokes a Gant script in the Grails project at scripts\BuildApplet.groovy.   • Can I specify which VCS module or adaptor is used by a Luntbuild buiulder or schedule?

    I have luntbuild set up and working great for my project, with several different builder schedules running on trunk. Now, I just created a branch, and I want to add at least one schedule (and corresponding builder, if necessary) to build that branch (I want the branch built separately from trunk). Is this possible? Some others in my company have just created separate projects in Luntbuild for their branches, but I feel like that might not be the ideal solution. So, to reiterate, I want to build this branch continuously. If I just add a second module to the current setup, it tries to build both trunk and the branch together. I want them build separately. Thanks for any insight! EDIT: The bounty is about to end, and still no answers. I have worked around the original problem by creating a new project in LB, but I feel like there must be a better way.

  • Splitting build cross the network?

    Is there a known solution for splitting build process cross the network machines? Use case: We are an average software development company. We own around 50 development workstations (Quad Core 2.66Ghz, 4 GB ram, 200 GB raid). No need to tell that at any single moment not every machine is loaded to the max. There are 5 to 15 projects running simultaneously at any single moment. Obviously all of them are continuously build on server, than deployed to proper environment. Single project build is taking from 3 to 15 minutes. The problem: Whenever we build 5 projects in a row the last project is going to be ready after around 25 - 50 minutes. Building in parallel does not solve the problem (build is only a part of the game, than you need to deploy, run tests etc.) YES the correct solution is to add another build server, but "That involves buying new Expensive hardware, and we already spent a lot!". Yea, right(damn them)! Anyway. What about splitting build among developers workstation? Lets say whenever we need to build project "A" we check 5 workstations and start build on all that are not overloaded. The build can be canceled by a developer if he really needs all the power of his machine as long as there is at least 1 machine that is still building. After build is finished deployment can be performed to a proper environment (hosted on some server, not on workstation :) ). The bigger the company the more this makes sense to me. Anyone tried something like this? Are there any good practices? Any helpful software? (90% of the projects are .net C#)

  • Hudson trigget builds remotely gives a forbidden 403 error

    I have a shell script on the same machine that hudson is deployed on and upon executing it, it calls wget on a hudson build trigger URL. Since its the same machine, I access it as http://localhost:8080/hudson/job/jobname/build?token=sometoken Typically, this is supposed to trigger a build on the project. But I get a 403 forbidden when I do this. Anybody has any idea why? I have tried this using a browser and it triggers the build, but via the command line it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

    I'm getting ready to dive into testing of a RESTful service. The majority of our systems are built in Java and Eclipse, so I'm hoping to stay there. I've already found rest-client (http://code.google.com/p/rest-client/) for doing manual and exploratory testing, but is there a stack of java classes that may make my life easier? I'm using testNG for the test platform, but would love helper libraries that can save me time. I've found http4e (http://www.ywebb.com/) but I'd really like something FOSS.

  • How to prevent parallel builds per build configuration across multiple Build Agents

    I have many build configurations in TeamCity, each servicing a large project. In the past if a build is kicked off the Build Agent could be busy for up to 20min! In order to improve throughput I installed a second Build Agent on the same machine such that if a build run is kicked off by say Build Agent 1 and it is busy for 20min and someone from another project makes a change then Build Agent 2 can do the build for the other project without needing to wait on the current build run to finish. All was well until two successive check-ins resulted in both Build Agents running a build for a single build configuration in parallel. Since some resources are shared, IIS directories & databases, I don't want a single build configuration to run on both Build Agents in parallel. How can I ensure a build isn't triggered if a build is currently running for that build configuration on a different build agent? One way seems to involve environmental variables and ensuring a 50/50 split by Build Agent in terms of build configuration compatibility, but that seems a little clunky.

In the control flow I have three steps: Step 1: Select Data from Db1.Table1 Step 2: Create Table2 in Db2 Step 3: Copy Data in Db1.Table1 to Db2.Table2 If I "Execute Task" one by one in order, it executes fine...but if I try running the entire project I receive the following error: Error at Copy Data from Table1 to DB2 dbo Table2 Task [OLE DB Destination[40]]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E37. An OLE DB record is available.   • SSIS Script Component Testing Strategy

    This question is in respect to the script component specifically. I am aware of ssisUnit etc… With simple SSIS Scripts Components, it’s sufficient to let basic testing flesh out issues, however I am working with a script that has grown in complexity over time. To better test the functionality I am considering abstracting the script logic into a DLL that gets deployed with the package, and then use the custom component in the script. The advantage is that the function will be more testable etc but it’s one more deployment artefact that needs to be managed. My question is, does anyone know of a better way to test such an SSIS script in a more isolated manner than to run the whole package and examine the output?

    I have a flat file that looks something like this: junk I don't care about \n \n columns names\n val1 val2 val3\n val1 val2 val3\n columns names \n val1 val2 val3\n I only care the lines with values. These value lines are all fixed width format and have the same line length. The other junk lines and column names can have any line width. When I try the flat file fixed width option or the ragged right option the preview looks all wrong. Any ideas what the easiest way to get this into SSIS is?

  • Distributed Message Ordering

    I have an architectural question on handling message ordering. For purposes of this question, the transport is irrelevant, so I'm not going to specify one. Say we have three systems, a website, a CRM and an ERP. For this example, the ERP will be the "master" system in terms of data ownership. The website and the CRM can both send a new customer message to the ERP system. The ERP system then adds a customer and publishes the customer with the newly assigned account number so that the website and CRM can add the account number to their local customer records. This is a pretty straight forward process. Next we move on to placing orders. The account number is required in order for the CRM or website to place an order with the ERP system. However the CRM will permit the user to place an order even if the customer lacks an account number. (For this example assume we can't modify the CRM behavior) This creates the possibility that a user could create a new customer, and place an order before the account number gets updated in the CRM. What is the best way to handle this scenario? Would it be best to send the order message sans account number and let it go to an error queue? Would it be better to have the CRM endpoint hold the message and wait until the account number is updated in the CRM? Maybe something completely different that I haven't thought of? We currently have 4 different build machines building different things at different times and have a bit of a headache to manually balance the load somehow. I would prefer to designate one of them to be the master build machine, which would delegate work to the other ones when they are free.

    We receive lots of data as flat files: delimitted or just fixed length records. It's sometimes hard to find out what the files actually contain. Are there any well established practices for embedding the schema of the file to the beginning or the end of a file to make the file self-explanatory? Just to get an idea, imagine something like this: <data name=test records=2 type=fixed> <field name=foo start=0 length=2 type=numeric> <field name=bar start=2 length=4 type=text> </data> 11test 12ing We would parse the xml in the beginning and use it for reading the records.
