• Why did my Cisco router hang?

  We have a Cisco 1841 in our storage IDF that was originally running a 12.4(1) IP-BASE image; I wanted to upgrade to an advancedservicesk9-mz image, but the flash did not have enough space, so I deleted the running image. Later I tried inserting a larger CF from a Catalyst4500, which crashed the 1841 router (now without a bootable image). Using another 1800 series router, I loaded the 12.4(25g) advancedservicesk9 image and verified the image checksums. I set the confreg to 0x2102 from rommon and booted the new image; however the 1841 now hangs indefinitely after printing the IOS export control banner. I have tried four other images, all with the same results. What is wrong with this router? UPDATE 1: I tried loading images from a FAT16-formatted USB, but this didn't work either. I also tried tftpdnld from rommon, but got a get_mac_address(): Search T_IDPROM_MACADDR (0xc3) failed Illegal MAC address. error and the file would not load.

After checking that the dll did in fact exist in the folder I called regsvr32 and received another error message Will try reinstalling as recommended.

• Ubuntu 11.10 is falling back to Unity 2D. How to get back to Unity 3D?

  It happened some minutes ago when I plugged my secondary monitor and my graphical interface simply crashed. So I had to restart my session. Since the crash Ubuntu insists to use Unity2D fall back instead of the default one. I used to plug the secondary monitor everyday when at home and nothing bad happened before. This 2D version of the GUI is ugly and has a lot of problems.   I am trying to install Oracle 11g(11.2.0.1.0) on Oracle Linux 6.4(Remote Server). I get the following error(s) when Database Configuration Assistant is running ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated Disconnection forced ORA-48210: Relation Not Found Can someone help me regarding this errors, I cant seem to find what exactly that I have to do to solve this issue. I have done the same install on Oracle Linux 5.7 but never faced this issue before. The only problem while installing(which happens on 5.7 too) is that the required packages fail, but upon checking, it seems much higher versions are already installed. Also I cant do a yum update because the system seems to have connectivity issues with public-yum.oracle.com as I cant ping it(even though the IP Address gets resolved)

• How do I re-install Unity after uninstalling gnome-shell?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have big issues with the Unity desktop. I installed then uninstalled gnome-shell (using "apt-get autoremove --purge gnome-shell"). Since then, my desktop has no background and no icons. Plus, and this is the bothering part, unity is very unstable. On startup, there is a huge use of memory, much more than before. Sometimes, I also cannot minimize a window without having the desktop freezing and having to kill the process in question with tty1. I have tried to use : apt-get autoremove --purge ubuntu-desktop apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But it does not change a thing. I tried to update my video drivers but it is still the same. How can I reinstall the unity desktop thoroughly (obviously, something in its install is broken) ? If it is not possible, is it safe that I create a new partition on my disk where I will put my files and reinstall Ubuntu on the old partition (I do have a USB install of Ubuntu 14.04 but not enough space to save my files on it) ?

  When X.org boots up, Synaptics touchpad works well. But when I remove the module it falls back to /dev/input/mice and don't use normal driver even when touchpad is available again. Xorg.0.log: ... Update: Found answer myself: Doing xinput set-int-prop "Synaptics Touchpad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 after reloading the kernel module reloads touchpad. Now suspend-to-ram works OK.

  I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device. • How do I resolve a plugin conflict in Eclipse?

  I'd like to upgrade my Helios installation of Eclipse to Indigo. When I do, I get the following message: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. Software being installed: Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers 1.4.2.20120213-0813 (epp.package.jee 1.4.2.20120213-0813) Software currently installed: Oracle GlassFish Server Tools 1.6.1.201009290929 (oracle.eclipse.tools.helios.glassfish.feature.group 1.6.1.201009290929) So my first thought was to simply uninstall GlassFish. For the life of me, I can't figure out how and where to go to do this. I went to Help-About Eclipse...-Installation Details. The only place that it looks like I can uninstall stuff is in the "Installed Software" tab. I do not see the Oracle Glassfish package anywhere. If I go to "Feature" or "Plug-ins", I can find it just fine, but there is no option to uninstall. So my next thought was to upgrade Glassfish. So I put the indigo repo in there, but I still get the same message when trying to update. Any ideas?

• Fixing /etc/shadow with md5 passwords to sha512 passwords

  I recently upgraded an ubuntu server with many users to a recent version from a version from 2008. The server used to use md5 password hashes (e.g., the shadow passwords began with $1$) and now is configured to use sha512. I'd prefer to keep using sha512, but would like the old users to be able to partially login once with their old password and then be forced to update their password (even if its the same password) generating a sha512. Right now, the old md5-based passwords in /etc/shadow won't let the user login at all (and just appear to be incorrect passwords). This seems like plenty of people should have had to do this before; yet I can't see how to do it, looking in the common places like /etc/pam.d/common-password nad /etc/login.defs. Also users will be logging in via ssh; and I do not have everyone's contact info (email or otherwise); and some login fairly rarely. Any help? (Googling doesn't seem to give any good solutions).

• How to specify file permission when putting a file using OpenSSH sftp command

  I am using various SFTP clients for uploading files to an SFTP server and I have a problem with default permission used when putting files. When requesting to put a file, SFTP client like WinSCP or Filezilla will send the SSH_OPEN command without requesting any explicit file permission. On the other side, it looks like the OpenSSH sftp command on Linux (Red Hat and Ubuntu) is pending the SSH_OPEN command together with the '640' mode. How can I configure the OpenSSH command to not explictly set the file mode or how can I configure it to send a mode, other than 640? Many thanks! • Cannot get webapps to work after upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04. But I cannot use WebApps. In fact there is no sign of them anywhere. Firefox and Chromium are not prompting for integration. I tried re-installing both browsers/webapps plugin of each, but no luck. Out of curiousity, I tried to install unity-webapps-preview through terminal, apt-get reported that this operation is going to need 127mb. After installation, restarting session, nothing. I re-ran the unity-webapp-preview in terminal and SURPRISINGLY it again asked me that this operation is going to need 58mb. After Installation, nothing. Firefox is showing the unity-webapp plugin in Extensions but in Preferences there is noting like Unity settings or options for exceptions in General tab (as I seen in some threads). Chromium is not even showing the plugin in Extensions nor in the settings. Really need help. I know there is a reported bug but it is mostly about the complains that the webapps are not working as they should but in my case they don't seem to exist. • Horizontal scrolling not working in Windows 7 running on MBP using Boot Camp

  Is there a way to enable horizontal scrolling on Windows installed on a bootcamp partition of MBP 13" Core 2 Duo, using a trackpad? I had a look into the Boot Camp Control panel settings, but could not find a setting that suggested this. I used the Boot Camp drivers that came with the MBP in the Mac OS X Install disk. The vertical scroll is working fine, and the horizontal scroll works fine in the Mac world of things, so the hardware is fine. I think maybe there might be an additional install for a driver that we may have to install? Or any update? Thanks in advance for all your help. :)

  I'm sure everyone has experienced it - if you leave a computer on too long, every once in a while, it needs a fresh reboot. I have a laptop, and I only hibernate it, but every week or two, I'm going to need to restart otherwise it will just slow down (usually when windows update makes me restart) I was wondering though... why? What are some of the things that occur that eat up memory that can seemingly not be freed unless I reboot the OS. In addition, are there any programs I can get that can free up this memory and keep the computer alive for longer? Preferably for windows 7.

• Sonicwall with failover, multiple subnets, and preferred WAN interface per subnet

  I am trying to set up my Sonicwall TZ-210 as follows: Two WAN interfaces (different ISPs), set up in failover mode. Two LAN interfaces with different subnets Each LAN subnet will have a preferred outbound WAN interface, but would failover when necessary. In this way, each ISP is being used for a separate subnet of my network, but both subnets could failover to the other ISP if their primary went down. I know how to do 1 and 2, but I don't know how to do 3. I could set up a route for each subnet to go through a specific interface, but what would happen in the event of a failover? Would it automatically update those routes? Thanks!

  Just a quick one this, but useful for mature BizTalk solutions, where over time the configuration settings can get confused, meaning Debug configurations building in Release mode, or Deployment configurations building in Development mode. That can cause issues in the build which aren't obvious, so it's good to fix up the configurations. • Can't write to NTFS formatted drives

  I'm not sure what has happened, but I've all of a sudden lost write access to any of my NTFS external drives. I installed a few games and apps from the software center, and now I can't make new folders or copy and paste files to anything that is NTFS. Everything is now read only, and I've tried so many things to fix it, but it seems hopeless. Just to check if it wasn't the drives themselves, I made a little ntfs formatted truecrypt volume, and a fat formatted volume. And yes, it seems that Ubuntu is blocking me from writing anything to NTFS. What happened here? Whats a way I can simply get write access to my NTFS drives, so I can just backup all my stuff. I'll probably reinstall Ubuntu. Please help. UPDATE (and thanks everyone for their quick replies) The problem has been solved. Prior to noticing that I had lost NTFS write permission, I had installed GParted from the software center, and there was an extension called ntfsprogs that came with it. During my search for a solution to the problem, I uninstalled GParted (as that was one of the apps I installed just before the problem). But that did not solve the problem. I came across an app called 'NTFS Configuration Tool'. When I installed this, it said that the ntfsprogs extension needed to be removed (so I guess uninstalling GPARTED, didn't remove the ntfsprog extension). I launched the NTFS Configuration Tool and now I have write access to NTFS drives. Unfortunately, I didn't check if I had write permission prior to launching the NTFS Configuration Tool, so I'm not sure whether the NTFS Configuration Tool, or the un-installation of ntfsprog gave me back NTFS write permission. Hopefully if another newbee encounters this problem, they'll come across this page and know what to do.

  Hello I have a problem with my PC getting the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bsod. It is a few months old pc. I am not overclocking or changing anything in bios, but sometimes (this is my third time) I get this bsod out of nowhere. This last time I was just watching some stream on twitch when the pc suddenly crashed. I have everything up to date in windows update and every other driver as well. Everything in Open hardware Monitor seems ok. Right now as of 10 min after the crash, the CPU temp is at 38°C, fans are at 1400RPM I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64b. Here are my spec: Intel i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz, Kingston HyperX 8GB DDR3 1600 XMP, GeForce GTX 660 with 340.52 drivers, Corsair VS450 power supply, Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3 you can see the BSOD dump here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/88i1q2nnqnpzux1/082514-29656-01.dmp?dl=0 Can anybody tell me what is wrong?

• Can't download updates for reinstalled Office 2000 on WinXP OS "expected version not found" error message

  I replaced HD and reinstalled WinXP Pro and successfully downloaded all of the service packs and security updates. I've reinstalled my licensed version of Office 2000 (upgrade version from Office 97). The software installs and is functional; but when trying to install updates SR-1 or SR-1a or any individual security update I get error message "expected version of product not found". Microsoft no longer provides support for this legacy version of office. I can't find any support documents in Microsoft's database that addresses this issue. This is my sister's computer and I've already come out-of-pocket $100 for hardware (not counting the $$hours of labor). She only uses MS Word for minimal correspondence. No desire to spend $100+ for new version of Office. I would greatly appreciate any suggested fixes for this problem.

• Apache mod_jk replacing mod_rewrite rules

  We have a slightly complex Apache 2.2 setup in front of a Tomcat 6.0 instance. The main Tomcat webapp is deployed in: /opt/tomcat/webapps/ROOT But we also have static content that we update semi-regularly. We didn't want to force a new build and deploy of the webapp, so that's stored separately in folders like: /opt/tomcat/webapps/css /opt/tomcat/webapps/foo /opt/tomcat/webapps/bar To handle this from Apache, we use mod_rewrite and rules look something like the following: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^/css/(.*)$ ROOT/$1 [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteCond ROOT/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.(jpg|png|html|js)$ - [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://localhost:8080/$1 [P,L] ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/ I now think I might want to start using mod_jk and I have two questions: Is it even worth using mod_jk? I don't need load balancing. Is it even possible to handle the cases I outlined where the static content is referenced as "http://www.example.com/css/foo.css", but we don't know if it's located in the Tomcat webapp or in one of the static folders.

• Windows 2008R2 blocks outbound LDAP for non-admins?

  I've got a Windows 2008R2 terminal server with ~30 users on it. It's joined to a Samba-based domain. During the login script, we connect directly to the LDAP server to pull out certain profile information. This used to work just fine. Now, it doesn't, but only for non-local-admin accounts. Local admins work fine. As a non-local-admin: Connection to ports 389 or 636 just terminate (wireshark on the LDAP server reveals no connection attempt) Connection to other ports on the same server work fine Same thing on multiple LDAP servers Windows firewall is disabled Can't find any other rules/policies that may block this I suspect since this used to work, it came down during an update, but for the life of me, I can't find what. EDIT: I just ran Wireshark on the machine and didn't see anything when connecting to the LDAP server in question (or any LDAP server for that matter). I can, however, see traffic when I connect to that server on another port.
