  I am doing my study's final year project and would like to do a little survey here. The topic is about configuration management and version control system for an industrial product (such as a piece of software, a furniture design, a car engine or even an aeroplane design etc...) 1.) What is you field of expertise (IT, engineering, manufactuing etc..) and what is the configuration management and version control system you use (previously or now) for your work? 2.) What is your opinion/comment (good, bad, what is it lack of or what can be improve etc...) about them? Much appreciated if you can include some real life examples for your opinion/comment. • Multiple forms in delphi

  In my Delphi Project i want to have a 'Settings' button that when clicked, opens a second form (i think this is the correct term, i essentially want a new window to open) for settings. When the user has finished changing the settings on this new form, i want the form to close on a button click. The settings the user types in will also need to be accessible to the first, 'main' form. So, for example, if my programme consisted of a main form, that calculated 'A' + 'B' (A and B being integer variables), with the settings form allowing the user to set values for A and B, how would i do this?

• How to force asp.net MVC 2 to redirect to default controller/action

  In a brand new ASP.NET MVC2 project, I want the user to be redirected to http://<mysite>/home/index rather than http://<mysite>/ We do this with our other sites for tracking purposes, to avoid the scenario where hits to the same default page show up as http://<mysite>/ http://<mysite>/default.aspx How do I accomplish this so that http://<mysite>/ automatically redirects to whatever default controller/action I have set up in my routing? Please note that I am aware the two are functionally equivalent, as the default controller action will be executed either way. I'm just interested in forcing consistent URLs in the browser.

• Adding Java packages to GWT

  I've tried searching but couldn't come up with a defined way on how to add your own packages to a GWT project. My tree structure looks like this: -com.mycompany -public MyApplication.html MyApplication.gwt.xml -com.mycompany.client MyApp.java -com.mycompany.gui TableLayout.java The answer I've seen out there says to add the packages relative to the root directory of the gwt.xml file, like so: <module> <inherits name="com.google.gwt.user.User" /> <entry-point class="com.mycompany.client.MyApp" /> <source path="client" /> <source path="gui" /> </module> It then complains: Unable to find type 'com.technicon.client.MyApp' Hint: Previous compiler errors may have made this type unavailable Hint: Check the inheritance chain from your module; it may not be inheriting a required module or a module may not be adding its source path entries properly Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix this?

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 1

  I'm going to try something here... if it seems useful, I'll continue, if it doesn't, I'll stop... so give me feedback! There are *lots* of Apps in the WP7 Marketplace, and heaven help me, but the Marketplace sucks for finding stuff. I won't rehash what's already been said in the blogs, but I agree with one and all. I went out last Saturday to find 2 apps that I knew were released, and couldn't do so on my device. Even in the Zune app, it took quite a while to find them... ok, I'll back off a bit, because I just found out I can do 'Search' now if I know the name... I didn't think that was working before. So my thought is on Monday (like today), I will post a review of 5 apps/games I either use or have played with on my device. These are strictly my opinions, you understand, but hey... it's better than a poke in the eye with an iPhone! A few disclaimers:     Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week, and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. In this Issue:   Jingo! is the first app I bought, just to see what the experience was like. It's very much like a game we used to play in school in the Army in 1971 on paper we passed around. Sort of a cross between hangman and Mastermind, you try to figure out the hidden word in 5 tries. You get really good at 5-letter words after a while. I like this because you have to think, and you're not pressured by a clock Jingo! is by James Furdell and is $1.99 I reviewed René Schulte's Pictures Lab a while back, and have not changed my mind. This is an excellent app for playing with any photo on your device... one you've just taken, one you've synced from your PC, or one you've saved from email. I like this because you can get some cool effects for your photos, and it just works. Pictures Lab is by Schulte Software Development and is $1.99 Since I work as a consultant, and from home, I wanted something I could track my time with. I've test-driven all the contenders I could find so far on the phone, and so far I like ONTRACK! the best. If asked, I have some suggestions, but it's probably just the way I work or think. What I do like is I can tap a project to start/stop/restart a counter, and at the end of the day it shows me how much time I've been working. If there's a way to make an adjustment in case you forget to tap the counter, I don't know how to do it, and that's my biggest complaint. I like this because you can get a daily readout which you can also email as a spreadsheet. The daily results display is very good. ONTRACK! is by Qmino and is $2.99 Remember Item 4 above... I've been playing guitar for 48 years... obviously since before the invention of 'tuners', so I'm not as dependent upon these as some folks are. I've tried some in the past and have always felt I can do just as good by ear (I have perfect relative pitch). So, I gave this app by András Velvárt a dance just to see how it works, and it is surprisingly good. If you're used to one of the stage tuners this may take a little getting used to, but it does the job. The difference with this one is there is no real 'null' point inside which you can think your guitar is in tune. The soundwave stays visible on the device, and if it's moving to the right, your string is flat, if it's moving to the left, your string is sharp. Getting it exact might be tricky, but it is exact! If you need to rely on a tuner, this is a good choice in my opinion, exactly because of the sensitivity.. tune up with this and you're dead-on. Guitar Tuner is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $0.99 Popper 2 is the WP7 version of a wildly popular game by Bill Reiss named Dr. Popper. You can get a trial, or you can now get a free lite version of the game. Popper 2 is a fast-paced bubble breaker game. I find it something fun to play when I just want to buzz out, but maybe the best review is that my daughter didn't want to give my phone back when I showed it to her, and always wants to grab my phone to play 'that game'. I mean in such a way, that GUI is described entirely in a human-readable (and human-writable) plain text file (code) code is terse (1 or 2 lines of code per widget/event pair), suitable for scripting structure and operation of the GUI is evident from the code (nesting of widgets and flow of events) details about how to build the GUI are hidden (things like mainloop, attaching event listeners, etc.) auto-layouts are supported (vboxes, hboxes, etc.) As answers suggest, this may be defined as declarative GUI programming, but it is not necessarily such. • How to share sessions between PHP and ASP.net application?

  My company took some old php application over. Due to our preference to ASP.net and to the lack of any documentation from the previous developer, we do not want to spend much resources on developing in PHP. For implementing new features, we will create an Asp.net application that has the same look to the user. We want to develop a kind of 'coexisting' web application. Therefore we must share sessions between an PHP and an Asp.net webapplication project, because there is a usermanagement involved with an existing MySQL database. (e.g. link 'A' directs to the PHP website, and link 'B' directs to the asp.net application) How can we share the session between and PHP and an asp.net application? And does anyone have a hint for this 'coexisting' thing, that might be useful in development? Edit: IIS 6 would be our targeted server, altough IIS 7.5 would also be an option

• VisualAssert Testing in C++, Loading a test fixture.

  Good day, I am learning Testing in Visual Studio C++ and I have several tutorials which I have followed. I am trying to load a test fixture. I have tried to put the test .cpp file in many different places but it will still not pick up on it when I click on "Run Tests" or "Run Tests without debugging" In the tutorials I found, they seemed to load into the Test Explorer automatically, but in mine is an icon with a X + (PROJECTNAME).EXE and when I hoover over it I get the process exited without registering with the agent... this is due to the model not containing any test fixtures... How can I load my tests into the Test Explorer...or register them with my project... I've tried right click and "Add Fixture...".... but that just starts a new test file and I have the same problem. Anybody know how I solve this issue?

• my windows forms application throws filenotfoundexception when run on another machine

  Hi, I have created a windows forms application using vs2008. when i copy the bin folder over to another machine and try to run it the applicaiton throws a filenotfoundexception error. Ive looked at the references files used in the project and each file points to either c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727... c:\Program Files\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5... c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Visual Basic Power Packs\1.1... i have verified that these directories exist on the other machines that cause the error. the two machines that i have tried it on and that throw there error are Windows XP WITHOUT VS2008 installed and Windows 7 with VS2008 installed I tried on two machine that DID work which are Windows XP with VS2008 and and my development machine Windows 7 with VS2008 Could anyone provide me with some insight on this issue Thanks

• heroku using git branch is confusing!

  Ok, so I have a big github project that i'm not supposed to merge my little Stacia branch into. However, it seems like Heroku only takes pushing MASTER seriously. It looks like I pushed my branch, but for example if I only have my branch, it even acts like there's no code on the server. I can't even get my gems installed since the .gems file is on my branch. Basically I don't even want Heroku to know there's a master. I just want to use my test Stacia branch. But it keeps ignoring my local branch. Is there a way to do this? And again, I don't want to overwrite anything on the main Github repository (eeek!) but it would be ok probably if I had both master and my branch on heroku and merged them there. I am a total git novice (on windows no less) so please bear with me.

  Hello, C# 2008 I am not sure how much work there is to inheriting from the web client class. Currently I am using it in my project. And I can't change to anything else. The customer would like to have a timeout after a certain period of time. The web client doesn't have this. So rather than re-invent the wheel, I am thinking of inheriting from the web client and adding this property. Do you think this is a suitable solution? Could it mean more work just to add this. • How can I resume downloads in Perl?

  I have a project that depends upon some other binaries to be downloaded from web at install time.For this what i do is: if ( file-present-in-src/) # skip that file else # use wget to download the file The problem with this approach is that when I interrupt a download in middle, and do invoke the script next time, the partially downloaded file is also skipped (which is not desired), also I want wget to resume the download of the partially downloaded file. How should I go about it: Possible Solutions I could think of: Let the file to be downloaded to some file say download_tmp. Move to original file if successful. Handle SIG{'INT'} to write proper cleanup code. But none of these could help resume the partial file download, Any insights?

• Proper way in MVVM to drive visual states.

  Given a content presenter that can display one of 4 different application pages, and I want to fade/otherwise animate a transition between pages based on view model state. Ideally I'd like to have these all defined within a DataTemplate, and then trigger transitions based on an enum from the view model, so that when some enum representing state changes, the transitions trigger to the appropriate page. Is there a known best practice to handle things like this? Immediately coming to mind is the possibiltiy to use Enter and Exit actions on data triggers to play storyboards, but this definately doesn't use the parts and states model, so I'd like to shy away from that. I've also tried using the DataStateSwitchBehavior from the codeplex Expression project, but found it to be incompatable with the latest builds of WPF 4.0/Blend 4 RC's SDK. Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle this elegantly? I'm using the MVVM-Light framework. Also I'd like to point out that as long as this resides on a DataTemplate in a Resource Dictionary, code-behind is not an option without refactoring.

• Code reading: where can i read great, modern, and well-documented C++ code?

  Reading code is one of the best ways to learn new idioms, tricks, and techniques. Sadly it's very common to find badly written C++ code. Some use C++ as it was C, others as if it was Java, some just shoot in their feet. I believe gtkmm is a good example of C++ design, but a binding could not be the better code to read (you need to know the C library behind that). Boost libraries (at least the one I read) tend to be less readable than I'd like. Can you mention open source projects (or other projects which source is freely readable) that are good example of readable, modern, well-documented, and auto-contained, C++ code to learn from? (I believe that one project per answer will be better, and I'd include the motivation that led you to selecting that one.)

• How to save big "database-like" class in python

  Hi there, I'm doing a project with reasonalby big DataBase. It's not a probper DB file, but a class with format as follows: DataBase.Nodes.Data=[[] for i in range(1,1000)] f.e. this DataBase is all together something like few thousands rows. Fisrt question - is the way I'm doing efficient, or is it better to use SQL, or any other "proper" DB, which I've never used actually. And the main question - I'd like to save my DataBase class with all record, and then re-open it with Python in another session. Is that possible, what tool should I use? cPickle - it seems to be only for strings, any other? In matlab there's very useful functionality named save workspace - it saves all Your variables to a file that You can open at another session - this would be vary useful in python!

  Hi, everyone. I don't want to fuel any holy-wars here, but I need to ask your opinion. Right now I'm in process of designing a Hardware Description Language as a project in my university. I decided to take VHDL language and just add some syntax-sugar 'coz VHDL is rather obese in syntax. I decided to use indentation to group blocks of code (like in Python), and I'm strongly criticized for that. Originally Begin...End; grouping is used in VHDL language. I have no clue what are cons and pros of these 3 types of grouping, the only thing I know is that I like Python style and I don't understand if it's usage could be erroneous or something? What do you think? What do you like? (hope that I can get some feedback from people who extensively used different languages with different code-grouping syntax, like Pasca, Ada, Delphi, C, C++, C#, Java, Python)

• Configuration manager for PHP

  I am working on code re-factoring of configuration file loading part in PHP. Earlier I was using multiple 'ini' files but now I plan to go for single XML file which will be containing all configuration details of the project. Problem is, if somebody wants configuration file in ini or DB or anything else and not the default one (in this case XML), my code should handle that part. If somebody wants to go for other configuration option like ini, he will have to create ini file similar to my XML configuration file and my configuration manager should take care everything like parsing, storing in cache. For that I need a mechanism lets say proper interface for my configuration data where the underlying data store can be anything( XML, DB, ini etc) also I don't want it to be dependent on these underlying store and anytime in future this should be extensible to other file formats.

• XQuery - problem with recursive function

  Hi all, Im new on this project and am going to write, what i thought was a simple thing. A recursive function that writes nested xml elements in x levels (denoted by a variable). So far I have come up with this, but keeps getting a compile error. Unexpected token - " ($counter <= $amount ) t" I never understood xquery, and cant quite see why this is not working (is it just me or are there amazingly few resources on the Internet concerning XQuery?)

  I need to build an AJAX application against our MS SQL Server database for my company. the app has to have user permissions and reporting and is pretty complex. I am really under the gun in terms of time. The company that I work for needs the app for an important project launch. A colleague/friend of mine in a different company recommended that I look at a product from Alpha Software called Alpha Five v10 with Codeless AJAX. He has told me that he has used it extensively and that it saves him a "serious boat load of time" and he says that he has not run into limitations because you can also write your own JavaScript or you wire in jQuery. I'm working on a Project with outdated, very old looking GUI (the used GUI framework is more than 10 years old) Since the used programming language is Eiffel, there are almost no good libraries for GUI development. Although Wrappers for C libraries exist, it's not that easy to wrap something like Qt with them. The current GUI framework uses the Windows API to create windows, widgets and so on. But as stated - it's very old. Now i would like to learn more about how to use the Windows API directly to create state of the art GUI's Can someone recommend any reading material? Thanks!

• File Encoding handling in Eclipse 3.5

  Hi, I use Eclipse 3.5 on Windows, with PDT and Subclipse plugins, with both legacy projects using ISO-8859-1 encoding (latin-1), and newers ones wich use UTF-8. I configured my workspace to use UTF-8, and I configured old projects to use latin-1. But every time I open an old project, it use UTF-8. With a workspace using latin-1 by default, I have the same problem with utf-8 projects edited as iso-8859-1. My encoding choice is written in the file .settings/org.eclipse.core.resources.prefs but seems to be never read. The only solution for now is to have a latin1 workspace, and an utf8 one. • Referencing the last row's data in Crystal Report

  I have a report where the fields come from data pulled from a SQL server. I have a total field that i have added to the report...however i have an interesting conundrum--i was hoping someone had a formula i could use. Three of my columns do NOT need summation...however my project requirements are telling me instead to just pull the last number from the last row in the report and putting that in the total row. To better clarify: 1999 0.1% 0.2% 0.3% 2001 -2% 0.3% 3.4% Basically, in the total field, i'd be pulling the values from 2001 since it is the last report row. In my total row, i want to have -2%, 0.3% and 3.4% showing (since those are the last row's values). SO basically, i just want to pull the last report row's data (NOT total it). Anybody have a formula i can use for this?

• Help Reading Binary Image Data from SQL Server into PHP

  I cannot seem to figure out a way to read binary data from SQL server into PHP. I am working on a project where I need to be able to store the image directly in the SQL table, not on the file system. Currently, I have been using a query like this one: INSERT INTO myTable(Document) SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK N'C:\image.jpg', SINGLE_BLOB) as BLAH This works fine to actually insert the image into the table, but I haven't yet figured a way to retrieve it and get my image back. I am doing this with PHP, and ultimately will have to make a stored procedure out of it, but can anyone enlighten me on a way to get that binary data (varbinary(MAX)) and generate an image on the fly. I expected it to be simple to use a SELECT statement and add a content-type to the headers that indicated it was an image, but it's simply not working. Instead, the page will just display the name of the file, which I have encountered in the past and understand it to be an error with the image data.

• Solid FFmpeg wrapper for C#/.NET

  I have been searching the web for some time for a solid FFmpeg wrapper for C#/.NET. But I have yet to come up with something useful. I have found the following three projects, but all of them apears to be dead in early alpha stage. FFmpeg.NET ffmpeg-sharp FFLIB.NET So my question is if anyone knows of a wrapper project that is more mature? I am not looking for a full transcoding engine with job queues and more. Just a simple wrapper so I do not have to make a command line call and then parse the console output, but can make method calls and use eventlisteners for progress. And please feel free to mention any active projects, even if they are stil in the early stages.
