  • Do I need liquid cooling?

    - by Mrrvomun
I'm building a computer mainly for gaming and developing games. It's going to be a three screen system with two GeForce GTX 460's and a quad-core i7. The newegg wattage calculator says I need around 900W. The case I intend to get is this one. Full specs if you need 'em are at the end of this post. I have no intentions to overclock the system at the moment, but this may change in the future. I've done a lot of research on the subject, and the answers I've found indicate that it takes a heck of a lot of power to require liquid cooling, and most non-overclocked systems don't need it. But I haven't seen a question about a system with two GPU's, so I ask you the following two questions: Assuming that the system is used for gaming for very extended periods of time (say 4-6 hours at a time, nonstop) with all three screens running at full 1080p, would the fans installed in the system suffice? Or would I need more fans and/or liquid cooling? If the system is used under the same circumstances as above, and is overclocked to a reasonable level, would the fans installed in the system suffice? Or would I need more fans and/or liquid cooling? Specs: Intel Core i7 16GB DDR3 Two nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 3TB HDD Two DVD-RW writers Thermaltake 1050W power supply Case is linked above

  • AMD FX8350 CPU - CoolerMaster Silencio 650 Case - New Water Cooling System

    - by fat_mike
Lately after a use of 6 months of my AMD FX8350 CPU I'm experiencing high temperatures and loud noise coming from the CPU fan(I set that in order to keep it cooler). I decided to replace the stock fan with a water cooling system in order to keep my CPU quite and cool and add one or two more case fans too. Here is my case's airflow diagram: http://www.coolermaster.com/microsite/silencio_650/Airflow.html My configuration now is: 2x120mm intake front(stock with case) 1x120mm exhaust rear(stock with case) 1 CPU stock I'm planning to buy Corsair Hydro Series H100i(www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h100i-extreme-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler) and place the radiator in the front of my case(intake) and add an 120mm bottom intake and/or an 140mm top exhaust fan. My CPU lies near the top of the MO. Is it a good practice to have a water-cooling system that takes air in? As you can see here the front of the case is made of aluminum. Can the fresh air go in? Does it even fit? If not, is it wiser to get Corsair Hydro Series H80i (www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h80i-high-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler) and place the radiator on top of my case(exhaust) and keep the front 2x120mm stock and add one more as intake on bottom. If you have any other idea let me know. Thank you. EDIT: The CPU fan running ~3000rpm and temp is around 40~43C on idle and save energy. When temp is going over 55C when running multiple programs and servers on localhost(tomcat, wamp) rpm is around 5500 and loud! I'm running Win8.1 CPU not overclocked PS: Due to my reputation i couldn't post the links that was necessary. I will edit ASAP.

  • Thermal risks to other components when watercooling CPU

    - by B Sharp
I recently ordered all the components for a new desktop system to replace my old, dying computer. I wanted to have a really quiet desktop, so I got a case rated for being quiet and opted to try a closed-system CPU water cooling kit (Antec Kuhler H2O 620) that was on sale for a very good price over the Thanksgiving weekend. Most of my components are still in transit, but I became somewhat worried when a friend mentioned that abandoning air cooling units can result in heat buildup inside the case due to heat generated by the video card and other components such as RAM, the northbridge, MOSFETs and voltage regulators radiating heat that the CPU fan would normally at least keep circulating around so it doesn't build up in localized areas. Is this a realistic problem? What other precautions should I take to remove heat from other components? Adding more case fans seems like it would get really noisy. Are there quiet alternatives?

  • Why datacenter water cooling is not widespread?

    - by MainMa
From what I read and hear about datacenters, there are not too many server rooms which use water cooling, and none of the largerst datacenters use water cooling (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, it's relatively easy to buy an ordinary PC components using water cooling, while water cooled rack servers are nearly nonexistent. On the other hand, using water can possibly (IMO): Reduce the power consumption of large datacenters, especially if it is possible to create direct cooled facilities (i.e. the facility is located near a river or the sea). Reduce noise, making it less painful for humans to work in datacenters. Reduce space needed for the servers: On server level, I imagine that in both rack and blade servers, it's easier to pass the water cooling tubes than to waste space to allow the air to pass inside, On datacenter level, if it's still required to keep the alleys between servers for maintenance access to servers, the empty space under the floor and at the ceiling level used for the air can be removed. So why water cooling systems are not widespread, neither on datacenter level, nor on rack/blade servers level? Is it because: The water cooling is hardly redundant on server level? The direct cost of water cooled facility is too high compared to an ordinary datacenter? It is difficult to maintain such system (regularly cleaning the water cooling system which uses water from a river is of course much more complicated and expensive than just vacuum cleaning the fans)?

  • Passive FTP on Windows Server 2008 R2 using the IIS7 FTP-Server

    - by ntor
Hello serverFault-community! During the last few days I have been setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 in a VMware. I installed the standard FTP-Server on it by using the Webserver (IIS)-role. Everything works fine with accessing my FTP-Site with ftp://localhost in Firefox. I can also get access to it via the local IP of my Server. Actually everything works fine in my LAN. But here's my problem: I want to get access "from outside", using the external IP or a dyndns-URL. I have a LinkSys-Router in front of my Server, therefore I'm forwarding all the important ports. If you may now think "this idiot has probably forgotten some ports", I must dissappoint you. It even works getting access to my Server-Website and messing around in some WebInterfaces. The problem is my passive FTP (active works for me). I always get a timeout, when e.g. FileZilla waits for a response to the LIST-command. The one big thing I don't get, is, why my Server sends a response to the PASV-command, naming a port like 40918, even if I have restricted the data port range for my passive FTP ( in the IIS-Manager) to e.g. [5000-5009]. I simply don't want to open and forward all possible data ports! And another thing is, I can't specify a static external IP-adress for my server, since I don't own any. I hope I have explained my problem in a comprehensible way. If not, simply ask by posting a comment! LG ntor PS: I have already mainly tried following articles: Out Of Band FTP 7 shows "Operation timed out" How to Configure Windows Firewall for a Passive Mode FTP Server ServerFault --- Passive ftp on Server 2008 --- EDIT: --- There is one idea rising up in my mind: When I use FileZilla to connect by passive mode I always get something like this: 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,102,160,86) According to a Rhinosof-article FZ tries to connect on port "160*256+86 = 41046", although I have restricted the data ports (as mentioned above). Could this be caused by the router, that doesn't forward out-ports directly, but uses different ones? (-- The IP-Adress given is the local one, since I'm not able to define a static external in the IIS-Mgr)

  • Looking for a comfortable Laptop Cooling Pad? Repurpose a pillow as a Laptop Cooling Pad

    - by Gopinath
Update: This idea sucks as using a pillow blocks laptop cooling fans and air flow, which in turn would damage the laptop. Thanks Vijay I’ve a HP Pavilion laptop which turns hot quickly and most of the time I would not be able to keep it on my lap after 30 minutes of usage. It’s the same case with my DELL laptop and not to blame any specific brand or model. Most of the budget laptops generate lot of heat and tough to keep them on laps for a long time. They burn skin and the irritation sense leaves me with no option other than throwing them away. While searching for options to beat the heat I found Laptop Cooling Pads on Amazon. They attach to the base of laptops and act like a heat shield/sink to protect thighs from the heat generated by laptops. They are available from around $7 and goes up to $100 depending on the features they offer. After reading reviews I selected a trendy looking and comfortable laptop cooling pad and it was around $25 before shipping and taxes. I’m going to buy one of the cooling pads from Amazon. On a second thought I started searching for options to repurpose any of the house hold items as a laptop cooling pad and save money. The option suggested by wife is to repurpose an old pillow as a laptop cooling pad.  Here is my laptop cooling pad Wow! That is a nice suggestion which saved my thighs from laptop heat as well my wallet from spending $25. Even if I’ve to buy a new pillow I would be able to pickup cheap one from Wal-Mart store for as low as $2.  Also I find it is very comfortable to use a pillow as a Laptop Cooling Pad as they are flexible and automatically adjust to the shape of my body.

  • Non-USB powered laptop cooling pad?

    - by Andrei Rinea
On my laptop (el-cheapo but pretty good) I have all my 3 USB ports occupied by devices in use (external mouse, external keyboard, 3G internet/flash drive/external hard drive/etc). I want a cooling pad for my hard-worked laptop but all seem to be powered by USB... This laptop is mainly stationary. Either is available a solution to power the USB-powered cooling pad other than connecting it to the laptop... ... either is there a non-USB powered laptop cooling pad?

  • Power and Cooling Cost compared with Server/Hardware Cost

    - by psaccounts
Has anyone done, or is aware of any, calculations to compare the cost of power and cooling compared to the cost of hardware (servers) in a typical data center? This is to compute a true total cost of ownership of self-hosting servers. Of course real TCO includes: hardware_cost + power + cooling + rental + human_cost + maintenance Is there any study that says something like (TCO - hardware_cost) = 40% of hardware_cost in 3 years? Any pointers will be appreciated.

  • Passive ftp on Server 2008

    - by xpda
I have a new Windows 2008 server with IIS7. When I connect to the ftp in active mode, it works fine. In passive mode, it connects, but then times out trying to get the directory listing. I tried disabling both firewalls, but it didn't help. I've tried this with difference client machines and different ftp client software, with no change. Any ideas?

  • active-to-passive ftp solution

    - by Joris
I have an ftp client (.NET app I don't have the source to) that only does active mode that needs to push data to an appliances ftp-server that only speaks passive. There is nothing I can do to modify the software on either end; but everything in between is fair game. (routing, windows or linux software, firewall tricks, ...) Is there some kind of ftp proxy software? Or some kind of solution I could try?

  • iptables 1.4 and passive FTP on custom port

    - by Cracky
    after the upgrade from debian squeeze to wheezy I've got a problem with passive FTP connection. I could narrow it to be iptables related, as I could connect via FTP w/o problems after adding my IP to the iptables ACCEPT rule. Before the upgrade I was able just to do modprobe nf_conntract_ftp ports=21332 and adding iptables -A THRU -p tcp --dport 21332 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT now..it doesn't help anymore. The INPUT rule is being triggered as I can see in the counter, but the directory listing is the last thing it does. Setting up a passive-port range is the last thing I want to do, I dislike open ports. I also tried the trick with helper mod by adding following rule before the actual rule for 21332 iptables -A THRU -p tcp -i eth0 --dport 21332 -m state --state NEW -m helper --helper ftp-21332 -j ACCEPT but it doesn't help and is even not being triggered according to counter. The rule in the next line (w/o helper) is being triggered.. here some info: # iptables --version iptables v1.4.14 # lsmod |grep nf_ nf_nat_ftp 12460 0 nf_nat 18242 1 nf_nat_ftp nf_conntrack_ftp 12605 1 nf_nat_ftp nf_conntrack_ipv4 14078 32 nf_nat nf_defrag_ipv4 12483 1 nf_conntrack_ipv4 nf_conntrack 52720 7 xt_state,nf_conntrack_ipv4,xt_conntrack,nf_conntrack_ftp,nf_nat,nf_nat_ftp,xt_helper # uname -a Linux loki 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.46-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux # iptables-save # Generated by iptables-save v1.4.14 on Sun Jun 30 03:54:28 2013 *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :BLACKLIST - [0:0] :LOGDROP - [0:0] :SPAM - [0:0] :THRU - [0:0] :WEB - [0:0] :fail2ban-dovecot-pop3imap - [0:0] :fail2ban-pureftpd - [0:0] :fail2ban-ssh - [0:0] -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 110,995,143,993 -j fail2ban-dovecot-pop3imap -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 21,21332 -j fail2ban-pureftpd -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 22 -j fail2ban-ssh -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 110,995,143,993 -j fail2ban-dovecot-pop3imap -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN,RST,PSH,ACK,URG NONE -j DROP -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,SYN FIN,SYN -j DROP -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN,RST -j DROP -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,RST FIN,RST -j DROP -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags FIN,ACK FIN -j DROP -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --tcp-flags ACK,URG URG -j DROP -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -j BLACKLIST -A INPUT -j THRU -A INPUT -j LOGDROP -A OUTPUT -j ACCEPT -A OUTPUT -s 93.223.38.223/32 -j ACCEPT -A BLACKLIST -s 38.113.165.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A BLACKLIST -s 202.177.216.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A BLACKLIST -s 130.117.190.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A BLACKLIST -s 117.79.92.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A BLACKLIST -s 72.47.228.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A BLACKLIST -s 195.200.70.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A BLACKLIST -s 195.200.71.0/24 -j LOGDROP -A LOGDROP -m limit --limit 5/sec -j LOG --log-prefix drop_packet_ --log-level 7 -A LOGDROP -p tcp -m tcp --dport 25 -m limit --limit 2/sec -j LOG --log-prefix spam_blacklist --log-level 7 -A LOGDROP -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -m limit --limit 2/sec -j LOG --log-prefix web_blacklist --log-level 7 -A LOGDROP -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -m limit --limit 2/sec -j LOG --log-prefix ssh_blacklist --log-level 7 -A LOGDROP -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-host-prohibited -A THRU -p icmp -m limit --limit 1/sec -m icmp --icmp-type 8 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 25 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p udp -m udp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 110 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 143 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 465 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 585 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 993 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 995 -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 2008 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 10011 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21332 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A THRU -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 30033 -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A fail2ban-dovecot-pop3imap -j RETURN -A fail2ban-dovecot-pop3imap -j RETURN -A fail2ban-pureftpd -j RETURN -A fail2ban-pureftpd -j RETURN -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN COMMIT # Completed on Sun Jun 30 03:54:28 2013 So, as I said, I have no problems with connecting when adding my IP to go through..but that's not a solution as noone except me can connect anymore~ If someone got an idea what the problem is, please help me! • Server Cabinet/Room Cooling

    - by user37226
Hello all. I currently have two desktops and three servers in my office sitting on the floor (I know this is bad). With that many servers the ambient temperature in the room goes up quickly. I am located in Dallas, TX so during the winter, if the heat is kept low, it is not a problem, but during the summer it easily jumps the room +10 degrees. I have decided and found a free 42U server cabinet that a hosting company was throwing away to house all of these systems in. One server is in a rack mount case while the other four servers are housed in mid-tower cases. I have purchased shelves for each computer and plan to lay the towers side ways on these shelves (as replacing the cases costs a heck of a lot of money). I like the idea of housing all of these systems in the cabinet because it will save a lot of room and clean up all of the cabling currently laying all over the office floor. When putting this setup together over the next couple of weeks, I want to address issues with dust and cooling. The server cabinet has a fan on top, front plexiglass door and a rear metal door with vent wholes on the bottom. First the cooling issues. I know I am going to want to have cool air enter the bottom of the cabinet and exit the top. I do not want the room heating up though as this will make my work area hot and then make the servers warmer as the air eventually reenters the cabinet. I had an idea to fix this problem, but am unsure if it will work. I was thinking of taking flexible piping and adapting it to the back fans of the computer having the other end of the pipe at the top close to the cabinet's top mounted fan. I was then thinking of creating a duct around the top fan into the attic. Now I am very concerned that the attic will cause issues with this type of setup because during July/August time frame, the attic is easily 120 degrees F. I could also use the flexible pipe to take it to an attic exhaust vent if it would be better to vent it into the 100 degree air outside (at least there may be wind. The other option would be to buy a small portable air conditioner. This may be a possibility, but do I want to spend the extra money on power? I bet this increases the noise. Plus they are around $250 on Amazon. What would you all recommend? Depending on the solution I end up running with above, I would also like to limit the dust that gets into the cabinet. If I were to cut a whole and mount a second cabinet fan on the bottom of the rear door, could I possibly mount a standard home air filter on the other side of that whole? Thanks in advance for your recommendations. I look forward to reading your interesting ideas.

  • Cooling a large laptop

    - by sazabi02
I've had my first laptop early this year and I haven't the slightest idea how to make it cooler. No real problems when I don't use graphics intensive games but when I play games like Dragon Age the temps rise up from 55 to 85. I'm concerned as a friend tells me that HP laptops aren't reputed to last long when it comes to heat. BTW, I've already bought a cooling pad with 3 fans and it didn't do much that elevating it and pointing an electric fan at it didn't do before. Additionally, this is a 17 inch HP dv7-3085dx entertainment notebook that i'm using.

  • ATI Radeon HD 5770 Cooling

    - by Murtez
I have a Radeon HD 5770 manufactured by ATI. In the course of using compressed air to clean it the fan shattered. I put a case fan on the card to cool it, but it's not doing a great job; the temperature goes to nearly 100 sometimes. The card is not overclocked or anything, the PC itself is clean. I looked around for a third party cooling system but the only one I found was the Accelero L2 Pro. It's low on stock and I don't know how great it will be, some review say it may not fit on all 5770 cards. Does anyone know of another one that will work? Help is much appreciated.

  • The remote server returned an error: 227 Entering Passive Mode

    - by hmloo
Today while uploading file to FTP sever, the codes throw an error - "The remote server returned an error: 227 Entering Passive Mode", after research, I got some knowledge in FTP working principle. FTP may run in active or passive mode, which determines how the data connection is established. Active mode: command connection: client >1024  -> server 21 data connection:    client >1024  <-  server 20 passive mode: command connection: client > 1024 -> server 21 data connection:    client > 1024 <- server > 1024 In active mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the client will use PORT command to tell the server:"hi, I opened port XXXX, please connect to me." and then server will use port 20 to initiate the data connection to that client port number. In passive mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the sever will tell the client:"hi, I opened port XXXX , please connect to me." and then client will initiate the data connection to that sever port number. In a nutshell, active mode is used to have the server connect to the client, and passive mode is used to have the client connect to the server. So if your FTP server is configured to work in active mode only or the firewalls between your client and the server are blocking the data port range, then you will get error message, to fix this issue, just set System.Net.FtpWebRequest property UsePassive = false. Hope this helps! Thanks for reading!

  • passive view and display logic

    - by genesys
Hi! In MVC and MVP and similar patterns there's often the approach of the "passive view" which is as stupid as possible. This should facilitate unit testing and create a clearer separation of view and model. I know that those patterns come in very different flavours and especially the understanding of MVP seems to differ from article to article. Therefore my question is not "how do i implement this pattern correctly". I want to improve view and model separation and go for better testability of the application. Therefore i'd like to go for a passive view. But my question is, where would you put logic that is clearly only view related? like a textviewer should scroll the text when the scrollbar is moved. would you put the logic for this into the Presenter? Let's say the textviewer has some extended functionality. like setting markings on textpassages. The logic for this makes clearly sense to be put into the Presenter. However, if it is mixed with all the 'direct' logic of the view (like scrolling the text) the Presenter could become very big, which is also not really a nice design. So my question is where to put display related logic of a passive view and what functionallity to mix in the Presenter. Thanks!

  • CPU Cooling with Heatsinks

    - by Jason Tzen
I've constructed a server that uses 2 Xeon E5-2620 CPUs and per Intel's recommendation I'm in the process of ordering heatsinks for each and I'm slightly concerned about thermal management. The case I'm using is well ventilated (the Coolermaster Cosmos II) but I have a few concerns regarding the adequacy of the heatsinks recommended by the MB manufacturer (Supermicro CPU HeatSink SNK-P0048PS). As you can see these heatsinks come without a fan and I'm wondering if they can keep the Xeons within their normal temperature range... Due to the low volume of literature on the topic I wasn't able to find anything conclusive.
