  • Traditional POS is Dead

    - by David Dorf
    Traditional POS is dead -- I've heard that one before. Here's an excerpt from Joe Skorupa's blog over at RIS where he relayed ten trends that were presented at NRF. 7. Mobile POS signals death of traditional POS. Shoppers don't love self-checkout, but they prefer it to long queues or dealing with associates. Fixed POS is expensive and bulky. Mobile POS frees floor space for other purposes and converts associates from being cashiers to being sales assistants that provide new levels of customer service and incremental basket sales. In addition to unplugging the POS, new alternatives are starting to take hold - thin client, POS as a service, and replacing POS software with e-commerce platforms. I'll grant that in some situations for some retailers there might be an opportunity to to ditch the traditional POS, but for the majority of retailers that's just not practical. Take it from a guy that had to wake up at 3am after every Thanksgiving to monitor POS systems across the US on Black Friday. If a retailer's website goes down on Black Friday, they will take a significant hit. If a retailer's chain-wide POS system goes down on Black Friday, that retailer will cease to exist. Mobile POS works great for Apple because the majority of purchases are one or two big-ticket items that don't involve cash. There's still a traditional POS in every store to fall back on (its just hidden). Try this at home: Choose your favorite e-commerce site and add an item to the cart while timing how long it takes. Now multiply that by 15 to represent the 15 items you might buy at store like Target. The user interface isn't optimized for bulk purchases, and that's how it should be. The webstore and POS are designed for different purposes. Self-checkout is a great addition to POS and so is mobile checkout. But they add capabilities to POS, not replace it. Centralized architectures, even those based in the cloud, are quite viable as long as there's resiliency in the registers. You cannot assume perfect access to the network, so a POS must always be able to sell regardless of connectivity. Clearly the different selling channels should be sharing common functionality. Things like calculating tax, accepting coupons, and processing electronic payments can be shared, usually through a service-oriented architecture. This lowers costs and providers greater consistency, both of which help retailers. On paper these technologies look really good and we should continue to push boundaries, but I'm not ready to call the patient dead just yet.

  • Configuring a POS printer using POS.NET

    - by codeincarnate
    Is it possible to configure a POS printer service object (an Epson one) from a POS.NET application (such as configuring the IP address for a network connected printer)? It would be nice if it didn't need to be done separately through the applications that Epson provides.

  • Pos receipt printer

    - by unknown (google)
    Is it possible to connect a receipt printer to a telephone for printing similar to how a Credit card terminal works when connected to a telephone line. Our clients donot have internet connections where we can connect the printer over Ethernet, so was thinking if it was possible to do the same via telephone line.

  • Calculate Quantity Available for POS - Inventory [closed]

    - by tunmise fasipe
    From what I have read Quantity on Hand is the physical number of Items in stock http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/quantity-on-hand.html Quantity Available is Quantity On Hand minus outbound items (e.g Ordered Quantity) http://community.intuit.com/posts/quantity-on-hand-vs-quantity-available-2 Does this still hold for POS? Can there be outbound items in POS system since items are picked up immediately? If not does that mean QtyOnHand = QtyAvailable for POS?

  • POS for .NET Known Service Objects

    - by Oliver S
    Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a list of LineDisplays, CashDrawers, Printers, that work well with POS for .NET. I want to get around creating my own service objects for potential devices that I might by which are not supported. Thanks.

  • Best Practise for Writing a POS System

    - by Gary
    Hi, I'm putting together a basic POS system in C# that needs to print to a receipt printer and open a cash drawer. Do I have to use the Microsoft Point of Service SDK? I've been playing around with printing to my Samsung printer using the Windows driver that came with it, and it seems to work great. I assume though that other printers may not come with Windows drivers and then I would be stuck? Or would I be able to simply use the Generic/Text Driver to print to any printer that supports it? For the cash drawer I would need to send codes directly to the COM port which is fine with me, if it saves me the hassle of helping clients setup OPOS drivers on there systems. Am I going down the wrong path here? Thanks, Gary

  • Does the use of a POS terminal mean I need PCI DSS compliance?

    - by Nic
    I've read a lot about PCI DSS and its requirements, but I'm unclear on what exactly determines whether an organization needs to worry about PCI DSS compliance. We accept payments using a basic HiSpeed 6200 POS terminal which is connected to the internet through our office LAN. We aren't using VLAN's. The terminal isn't integrated with any payment processing applications, it just prints out paper receipts. Do I need to worry about PCI DSS compliance?

  • NRF Big Show 2011 -- Part 1

    - by David Dorf
    When Apple decided to open retail stores, they came to 360Commerce (now part of Oracle Retail) to help with the secret project. Similarly, when Disney Stores decided to reinvent itself, they also came to us for their POS system. In both cases visiting a store is an experience where sales take a backseat to entertainment, exploration, and engagement This quote from a recent Stores Magazine article says it all: "We compete based on an experience, emotion and immersion like Disney," says Neal Lassila, vice president of global information technology for Disney. "That's opposed to [competing] on price and hawking a doll for $19.99. There is no sales pressure technique." Instead, it's about delivering "a great time." While you're attending the NRF conference in New York next week, you'll definitely want to stop by the new 20,000 square-foot Disney store in Times Square. If you're not attending, you can always check out the videos to get a feel for the stores' vibe. This year we've invited Disney Stores to open a pop-up store within the Oracle Retail booth. There will be lots of items on sale that fit in your suitcase, and there's no better way to demonstrate our POS, including the mobile POS running on an iPod Touch. You should also plan to attend Tuesday morning's super-session The Magic of the Disney Store: An Immersive Retail Experience with Steve Finney. In the case of Apple and Disney, less POS is actually a good thing. In both cases it was important to make the checkout process fast and easy so as not to detract from the overall experience. There will be ample opportunities to see this play out in New York next week, so I hope you take advantage.

  • Add collison detection to enemy sprites?

    i'd like to add the same collision detection used by the player sprite to the enemy sprites or 'creeps' ive added all the relevant code I can see yet collisons are still not being detected and handled, please find below the class, I have no idea what is wrong currently, the list of walls to collide with is 'wall_list' import pygame import pauseScreen as dm import re from pygame.sprite import Sprite from pygame import Rect, Color from random import randint, choice from vec2d import vec2d from simpleanimation import SimpleAnimation import displattxt black = (0,0,0) white = (255,255,255) blue = (0,0,255) green = (101,194,151) global currentEditTool currentEditTool = "Tree" global editMap editMap = False open('MapMaker.txt', 'w').close() def draw_background(screen, tile_img): screen.fill(black) img_rect = tile_img.get_rect() global rect rect = img_rect nrows = int(screen.get_height() / img_rect.height) + 1 ncols = int(screen.get_width() / img_rect.width) + 1 for y in range(nrows): for x in range(ncols): img_rect.topleft = (x * img_rect.width, y * img_rect.height) screen.blit(tile_img, img_rect) def changeTool(): if currentEditTool == "Tree": None elif currentEditTool == "Rock": None def pauseGame(): red = 255, 0, 0 green = 0,255, 0 blue = 0, 0,255 screen.fill(black) pygame.display.update() if editMap == False: choose = dm.dumbmenu(screen, [ 'Resume', 'Enable Map Editor', 'Quit Game'], 64,64,None,32,1.4,green,red) if choose == 0: print("hi") elif choose ==1: global editMap editMap = True elif choose ==2: print("bob") elif choose ==3: print("bob") elif choose ==4: print("bob") else: None else: choose = dm.dumbmenu(screen, [ 'Resume', 'Disable Map Editor', 'Quit Game'], 64,64,None,32,1.4,green,red) if choose == 0: print("Resume") elif choose ==1: print("Dis ME") global editMap editMap = False elif choose ==2: print("bob") elif choose ==3: print("bob") elif choose ==4: print("bob") else: None class Wall(pygame.sprite.Sprite): # Constructor function def __init__(self,x,y,width,height): pygame.sprite.Sprite.__init__(self) self.image = pygame.Surface([width, height]) self.image.fill(green) self.rect = self.image.get_rect() self.rect.y = y self.rect.x = x class insertTree(pygame.sprite.Sprite): def __init__(self,x,y,width,height, typ): pygame.sprite.Sprite.__init__(self) self.image = pygame.image.load("images/map/tree.png").convert() self.image.set_colorkey(white) self.rect = self.image.get_rect() self.rect.y = y self.rect.x = x class insertRock(pygame.sprite.Sprite): def __init__(self,x,y,width,height, typ): pygame.sprite.Sprite.__init__(self) self.image = pygame.image.load("images/map/rock.png").convert() self.image.set_colorkey(white) self.rect = self.image.get_rect() self.rect.y = y self.rect.x = x class Creep(pygame.sprite.Sprite): """ A creep sprite that bounces off walls and changes its direction from time to time.   • Drive a POS printer via USB in c#

    - by JDibble
    Any ideas how i can best drive a USB POS printer from c#. POS printers are usually serial, TCP/IP or USB based. I know how to accomplish serial and TCP/IP but have no idea about communications through USB in C#. I know that there is a layer available from Microsoft called POS.NET, but I want to try and avoid using this. Any ideas or any C# libraries that people can recomend would be really appreciated. Thanks

  • Feed paper on POS Printer C#

    - by evargas
    I've been trying to programatically feed the paper on a pos printer (Epson TM-U220D). The problem I have is that the last line of the document don't get printed, instead, it is printed as the first line of the next document printed. I tried POS for .NET sending the "ESC|flF" command, also tried to send the raw esc/pos command using the serial port, but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

So the solution is only: Printer + iPhone. I have a early question on this, here but with not answers. The idea is that the printer work as their own server and I can send print commands to make tickets and that stuff. The salesman work outside the company,and have not ascces to internet or other facilities. I found this: http://www.barcodegiant.com/epson/mobilink.htm and http://www.barcodegiant.com/zebra/mz220.htm but is not clear to me if will work as I imagine. And also, I don't find any how to in how make the programing...

So if anyone has a smarter way of doing this job i would be happy to know. private bool Check(List<MyItem> list) { bool result = true; //MyItem implements IComparable<MyItem> list.Sort(); for (int pos = 0; pos < list.Count - 1; pos++) { bool previousCheckOk = true; if (pos != 0) { if (!CheckCollisionWithPrevious(pos)) { MarkAsFailed(pos); result = false; previousCheckOk = false; } else { MarkAsGood(pos); } } if (previousCheckOk && pos != list.Count - 1) { if (!CheckCollisionWithFollowing(pos)) { MarkAsFailed(pos); result = false; } else { MarkAsGood(pos); } } } return result; } private bool CheckCollisionWithPrevious(int pos) { bool checkOk = false; var previousItem = _Item[pos - 1]; // Doing some checks ... return checkOk; } private bool CheckCollisionWithFollowing(int pos) { bool checkOk = false; var followingItem = _Item[pos + 1]; // Doing some checks ... return checkOk; } Update After reading the answer from Aaronaught and a little weekend to refill full mind power i came up with the following solution, that looks far better now (and nearly the same i got from Aaronaught): public bool Check(DataGridView dataGridView) { bool result = true; _Items.Sort(); for (int pos = 1; pos < _Items.Count; pos++) { var previousItem = _Items[pos - 1]; var currentItem = _Items[pos]; if (previousItem.CollidesWith(currentItem)) { dataGridView.Rows[pos].ErrorText = "Offset collides with item named " + previousItem.Label; result = false; sb.AppendLine("Line " + pos); } } dataGridView.Refresh(); return result; }

  • What is the best way to handle this type of inclusive logic in Ruby?

    - by Steve McLelland
    Is there a better way of handling this in Ruby, while continuing to use the symbols? pos = :pos1 # can be :pos2, :pos3, etc. if pos == :pos1 || pos == :pos2 || pos == :pos3 puts 'a' end if pos == :pos1 || pos == :pos2 puts 'b' end if pos == :pos1 puts 'c' end The obvious way would be swapping out the symbols for number constants, but that's not an option. pos = 3 if pos >= 1 puts 'a' end if pos >= 2 puts 'b' end if pos >= 3 puts 'c' end Thanks.

  • Problems with SAT Collision Detection

    - by DJ AzKai
    I'm doing a project in one of my modules for college in C++ with SFML and I was hoping someone may be able to help me. I'm using a vector of squares and triangles and I am using the SAT collision detection method to see if objects collide and to make the objects respond to the collision appropriately using the MTV(minimum translation vector) Below is my code: //from the main method int main(){ // Create the main window sf::RenderWindow App(sf::VideoMode(800, 600, 32), "SFML OpenGL"); // Create a clock for measuring time elapsed sf::Clock Clock; srand(time(0)); //prepare OpenGL surface for HSR glClearDepth(1.f); glClearColor(0.3f, 0.3f, 0.3f, 0.f); //background colour glEnable(GL_DEPTH_TEST); glDepthMask(GL_TRUE); //// Setup a perspective projection & Camera position glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION); glLoadIdentity(); //set up a 3D Perspective View volume //gluPerspective(90.f, 1.f, 1.f, 300.0f);//fov, aspect, zNear, zFar //set up a orthographic projection same size as window //this mease the vertex coordinates are in pixel space glOrtho(0,800,0,600,0,1); // use pixel coordinates // Finally, display rendered frame on screen vector<BouncingThing*> triangles; for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { //instantiate each triangle; triangles.push_back(new BouncingTriangle(Vector2f(rand() % 700, rand() % 500), 3)); // Start game loop while (App.isOpen()) { // Process events sf::Event Event; while (App.pollEvent(Event)) { // Close window : exit if (Event.type == sf::Event::Closed) App.close(); // Escape key : exit if ((Event.type == sf::Event::KeyPressed) && (Event.key.code == sf::Keyboard::Escape)) App.close(); However the problem is is that when this happens there are no collisions actually happening and I would really love to find out where the flaw is in the code. If you need any more information/code please don't hesitate to ask and I'll reply as soon as possible Regards, AzKai

  • is Drupal good business POS [on hold]

    - by mavili
    I've got to work on a POS-type web application for a money transfer, shipping, and other customer services like translation and help-out charges. I was planning to do that in pure PHP without frameworks or CMS's, but then Drupal came into play and I'm wondering if I should learn Drupal and do the app with it. My question is, is Drupal good for such a work, and if it is will it take me more than a week to learn enough to make it possible? For info, I'm a decent PHP programmer.

  • Cocos2d: Changing b2Body x val every frame causes jitter

    - by Joey Green
    So, I have a jumping mechanism similar to what you would see in doodle jump where character jumps and you use the accelerometer to make character change direction left or right. I have a player object with position and a box2d b2Body with position. I'm changing the player X position via the accelerometer and the Y position according to box2d. pseudocode for this is like so -----accelerometer acceleration------ player.position = new X -----world update--------- physicsWorld-step() //this will get me the new Y according to the physics similation //so we keep the bodys Y value but change x to new X according to accelerometer data playerPhysicsBody.position = new pos(player.position.x, keepYval) player.position = playerPhysicsBody.position Now this is simplifying my code, but I'm doing the position conversion back and forth via mult or divide by PTM_. Well, I'm getting a weird jitter effect after I get big jump in acceleration data. So, my questions are: 1) Is this the right approach to have the accelerometer control the x pos and box2d control the y pos and just sync everthing up every frame? 2) Is there some issue with updating a b2body x position every frame? 3) Any idea what might be creating this jitter effect? I've collecting some data while running the game. Pre-body is before I set the x value on the b2Body in my update method after I world-step(). Post of course is afterwards. As you can see there is definitively a pattern. 012-06-19 08:14:13.118 Game[1073:707] pre-body pos 5.518720~24.362963 2012-06-19 08:14:13.120 Game[1073:707] post-body pos 5.060156~24.362963 2012-06-19 08:14:13.131 Game[1073:707] player velocity x: -31.833529 2012-06-19 08:14:13.133 Game[1073:707] delta 0.016669 2012-06-19 08:14:13.135 Game[1073:707] pre-body pos 5.060156~24.689455 2012-06-19 08:14:13.137 Game[1073:707] post-body pos 5.502138~24.689455 2012-06-19 08:14:13.148 Game[1073:707] player velocity x: -31.833529 2012-06-19 08:14:13.150 Game[1073:707] delta 0.016667 2012-06-19 08:14:13.151 Game[1073:707] pre-body pos 5.502138~25.006948 2012-06-19 08:14:13.153 Game[1073:707] post-body pos 5.043575~25.006948 2012-06-19 08:14:13.165 Game[1073:707] player velocity x: -31.833529 2012-06-19 08:14:13.167 Game[1073:707] delta 0.016644 2012-06-19 08:14:13.169 Game[1073:707] pre-body pos 5.043575~25.315441 2012-06-19 08:14:13.170 Game[1073:707] post-body pos 5.485580~25.315441 2012-06-19 08:14:13.180 Game[1073:707] player velocity x: -31.833529 2012-06-19 08:14:13.182 Game[1073:707] delta 0.016895 2012-06-19 08:14:13.185 Game[1073:707] pre-body pos 5.485580~25.614935 2012-06-19 08:14:13.188 Game[1073:707] post-body pos 5.026768~25.614935 2012-06-19 08:14:13.198 Game[1073:707] player velocity x: -31.833529 2012-06-19 08:14:13.199 Game[1073:707] delta 0.016454 2012-06-19 08:14:13.207 Game[1073:707] pre-body pos 5.026768~25.905428 2012-06-19 08:14:13.211 Game[1073:707] post-body pos 5.469213~25.905428 2012-06-19 08:14:13.217 Game[1073:707] acceleration x -0.137421 2012-06-19 08:14:13.223 Game[1073:707] player velocity x: -65.022644 2012-06-19 08:14:13.229 Game[1073:707] delta 0.016603

    bassically im trying to add collision detection to the sprite below, using the following: self.rect = bounds_rect collide = pygame.sprite.spritecollide(self, wall_list, False) if collide: # yes print("collide") However it seems that when the collide is triggered it continuously prints 'collide' over and over when instead i want them to simply not be able to walk through the object, any help? def update(self, time_passed): """ Update the creep. time_passed: The time passed (in ms) since the previous update. • Intercept POS print instruction, capture the text content and send it to the printer

    - by SA
    I would like intercept print instruction from POS sytems, capture the text content(as I need to use this) and send it to the printer. And would also like to use a program with OPOS standards, so that it will work with all kinds of POS system. I looked into MS POS .Net and and samples from MONORECS and still not clear on how to accomplish this. If some body can shed some light on how to achieve this, setting up a test system, where can I learn more about this and give some directions that will be great.

  • Can I send a ESC d command to a POS printer from perl?

    - by Bradleyb
    I have a Star TSP100 printer and I'm having few problems with it really. My problem is that I'm not as familiar with programming as I should be - but I'm learning! The programmers reference for the Star printer says that if I send a ESC d to the printer - that will activate the built-in cutter - which I would like to do very much. My problem is that I have no idea how to send an escape code like that from within PERL - if it's even possible. I really appreciate any advice on this one.

  • Debian: Firefox or Iceweasel default printer for POS station

    - by Bubnoff
    Context Using Debian 6.04 "Squeeze" as POS station. There are two printers installed: Network printer and a receipt printer It absolutely must be able to print by default to the receipt printer on a certain website though the system default is a network printer. In Debian ...it doesn't. Problem I've set up XP, 7, Ubuntu and even Mac OSX this way, so I'm no stranger to setting Firefox up this way ...same Iceweasel/Firefox settings ...complete fail. Always uses system default no matter what the settings, or, which printer you print from. To get this to work on other systems you do this: Print a page in Firefox using desired printer. Ensure print.save_settings is true. Firefox remembers last printer used Set print.always_print_silent = true The end. This works on every OS I've set up ....except Firefox and Iceweasel in Debian. My only recourse seems to be to set the receipt printer as default or go back to bloaty Ubuntu/Mint ...etc.
