    Hi Guys, I'm using log4net v1.2 with a Windows Service App. My RollingFileAppender seems not to work. I'm pasting the logging sections of my service.exe.config below.   • Log4net RollingFileAppender doesn't roll over anymore after a couple of weeks

    Hello, I'm using log4net (v1.2.9.0) in a web project. Everything works like a charm, but after a couple of weeks the RollingFileAppender stops to roll over. Instead every log message is appended to the same file which therefore has a giant size by now.   • Log4net RollingFileAppender Size rollingStyle file extension

    I am using the RollingFileAppender and the Size rollingStyle. By default it creates backup files with a numbered extension, this drives me nuts. Is it possible to change it so it always uses a defined extension (say .txt or .log) and inserts the number as part of the file name.   • Log4Net & RollingFileAppender to generate Xml files

    I've managed to configure Log4Net with a RollingFileAppender in order to generate Xml files. However, the generated files are not valid XML files until a "roll" is performed - the XML doesn't have a closing XML tag. Basically, this prevents to files from being read until that are "closed"/"rolled". Anyone else encountered this issue? I my previous (custom) solution I had to write the closing tag after writing each entry, and overwrite it with the next entry... :(

  • Configuring log4net appenders via XML file *and* code

    I started to play with log4net today and so far, I really like it. In order to preserve our current logging functionality, the app needs to create a new log file whenever the application is started. The log file name has the date and time stamp encoded in it. Currently, I've got log4net configured via an XmlConfigurator, which works great, except that the filename for my RollingFileAppender is hardcoded in the configuration XML file. I'd like to continue to use the XmlConfigurator, but after calling Configure(), I want to get at the RollingFileAppender and, in code, change its file value to be a dynamically-generated string. The sample documentation online seems to be down right now, but I've poked through the SDK reference, and it looks like I could use the Heirarchy and GetAppenders() to do what I need to do. Am I on the right track?

  • Do you know of a log4net appender which rolls on date, but let's you limit the total number of files

    Hi, I need to define an appender for log4net in a way that I get one log file for each day, but the total number of files are limited to, let's say, 30. That is I want to keep only the logs not older then 30 days, delete the older ones. I've tried doing it with RollingFileAppender, but it seems that specifying a limit of files to keep is not supported. Do you know of an alternative solution that I could use?

You might want to tune this back to ‘Debug’ or ‘Info’ later as logging ‘All’ will produce too much data to the logs.   • OAuthWebSecurity.VerifyAuthentication IsSuccessful returns false how do I to determine the reason?

    I'm using DotNetOpenAuth with a MVC 4 application. All the sudden Google auth is failing (MS is working). I also looked at this page to use log4net. I check the "log" variable, and contains an LogImpl object, that has all the logging levels enabled. I get no error or configuration warning, I cannot see any file in the root, in the bin or anywhere. What do I have to do to make it work? Cheers.

  • log4net not logging with a mixture of .net 1.1 and .net 3.5

    Hi All, I have an iis server on a windows 2003 production machine that will not log using log4net in the .net3.5 web application. Log4net works fine in the 1.1 apps using log4net version 1.2.9.0 and but not the 3.5 web app. The logging works fine in a development and staging environment but not in production. It does not error and I receive no events logged in the event viewer and don't know where to look next. I have tried both versions of log4net (1.2.9.0 and 1.2.10.0) and both work in development and staging but not in production. For testing purposes I have created just a single page application that just echos back the time when the page is hit and also is supposed to log to my logfile using log4net.   • Can Log4net have multiple appenders write to the same file?

    I'm using a RollingFileAppender to log some info to a file with a conversionPattern (in the web.config) that looks like this for the header of each log section: <conversionPattern value="%date - %property{userId} - %property{method}%newline--------------------------------%newline%message%newline%newline"/> I'd like to log details under this header as bullet points. I'm currently trying to use another RollingFileAppender that logs to the same file with a simple conversionPattern of just a dash, like this: <conversionPattern value="- %message%newline"/> But these messages aren't making it into the log file. I'm using Log.Info() for the header and Log.Debug() for the bullet points and filtering each appender on their respective log levels. Is what I'm trying to do possible? Or is there a better way to get header and detail information into a log file from log4net?

Can someone assure me I'm not imagining that? Can someone please point me to where in the doc it explicitly states that both the config section and the initialisation hook are required - hopefully with an explanation of when this changed, if it did? I can easily imagine why this might be the policy -- having the initialisation step explicit to avoid surprises etc., it's just that I seem to recall this not always being the case... (And normally I have the config in a separate file, which generally takes configsections out of the picture)

I use have tested this and the application has permissions to this directoy. here is where I am trying to use log4net. public class HomeController : Controller { readonly log4net.ILog log = log4net.LogManager.GetLogger(System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType); public ActionResult Index() { log.Error("In Index "); return View(); } } when I run the appliction and go to this controller. Log4net does nothing. it doesn't create the files in that directory or anything. I have enabled internal debugging for lognet and I get no output errors in the console. This is all i see from log4net log4net: log4net assembly [log4net, Version=1.2.10.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b44e1d426115821]. Loaded from [C:\Users\twaldron.BULLFROGSPAS\AppData\Local\Temp\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\7642c99a\60feb7f2\assembly\dl3\17247033\008dfd6d_e2d0ca01\log4net.DLL]. Looks like the ERROR logging level for the parent category is not taken into consideration when the event is sent as part of additivity... is my observation correct or am I missing something ? how should I alter the configuration in order to achieve only ERROR level loggings in server.log ? thanks, GBa.

Any ideas/suggestions? I thought originally this error may be due to a file write permission constraint, but that doesn't seem to be the case (or so I think).

    I recently switched out log4net logging from using config files to being set up programmatically. This has resulted in the nhiberate entries getting repeated 2 or sometimes 3 times. Here's the code.   • How do you get log4j to roll files based on date and size?

    So log4j comes with two existing log rollers: RollingFileAppender, and DailyRollingFileAppender. Has anyone heard of an appender that does both of what the former do? I need an appender that will roll log files based on filesize, but also append the current date to it. I've been thinking about creating my own appender, but if there is already one that has been created, why not save the time and use that one?
