  • ROracle support for TimesTen In-Memory Database

    - by Sam Drake
Today's guest post comes from Jason Feldhaus, a Consulting Member of Technical Staff in the TimesTen Database organization at Oracle.  He shares with us a sample session using ROracle with the TimesTen In-Memory database.  Beginning in version 1.1-4, ROracle includes support for the Oracle Times Ten In-Memory Database, version 11.2.2. TimesTen is a relational database providing very fast and high throughput through its memory-centric architecture.  TimesTen is designed for low latency, high-volume data, and event and transaction management. A TimesTen database resides entirely in memory, so no disk I/O is required for transactions and query operations. TimesTen is used in applications requiring very fast and predictable response time, such as real-time financial services trading applications and large web applications. TimesTen can be used as the database of record or as a relational cache database to Oracle Database. ROracle provides an interface between R and the database, providing the rich functionality of the R statistical programming environment using the SQL query language. ROracle uses the OCI libraries to handle database connections, providing much better performance than standard ODBC.The latest ROracle enhancements include: Support for Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database Support for Date-Time using R's POSIXct/POSIXlt data types RAW, BLOB and BFILE data type support Option to specify number of rows per fetch operation Option to prefetch LOB data Break support using Ctrl-C Statement caching support Times Ten 11.2.2 contains enhanced support for analytics workloads and complex queries: Analytic functions: AVG, SUM, COUNT, MAX, MIN, DENSE_RANK, RANK, ROW_NUMBER, FIRST_VALUE and LAST_VALUE Analytic clauses: OVER PARTITION BY and OVER ORDER BY Multidimensional grouping operators: Grouping clauses: GROUP BY CUBE, GROUP BY ROLLUP, GROUP BY GROUPING SETS Grouping functions: GROUP, GROUPING_ID, GROUP_ID WITH clause, which allows repeated references to a named subquery block Aggregate expressions over DISTINCT expressions General expressions that return a character string in the source or a pattern within the LIKE predicate Ability to order nulls first or last in a sort result (NULLS FIRST or NULLS LAST in the ORDER BY clause) Note: Some functionality is only available with Oracle Exalytics, refer to the TimesTen product licensing document for details. Connecting to TimesTen is easy with ROracle. Simply install and load the ROracle package and load the driver. > install.packages("ROracle") > library(ROracle) Loading required package: DBI > drv <- dbDriver("Oracle") Once the ROracle package is installed, create a database connection object and connect to a TimesTen direct driver DSN as the OS user. > conn <- dbConnect(drv, username ="", password="", dbname = "localhost/SampleDb_1122:timesten_direct") You have the option to report the server type - Oracle or TimesTen? > print (paste ("Server type =", dbGetInfo (conn)$serverType)) [1] "Server type = TimesTen IMDB" To create tables in the database using R data frame objects, use the function dbWriteTable. In the following example we write the built-in iris data frame to TimesTen. The iris data set is a small example data set containing 150 rows and 5 columns. We include it here not to highlight performance, but so users can easily run this example in their R session. > dbWriteTable (conn, "IRIS", iris, overwrite=TRUE, ora.number=FALSE) [1] TRUE Verify that the newly created IRIS table is available in the database. To list the available tables and table columns in the database, use dbListTables and dbListFields, respectively. > dbListTables (conn) [1] "IRIS" > dbListFields (conn, "IRIS") [1] "SEPAL.LENGTH" "SEPAL.WIDTH" "PETAL.LENGTH" "PETAL.WIDTH" "SPECIES" To retrieve a summary of the data from the database we need to save the results to a local object. The following call saves the results of the query as a local R object, iris.summary. The ROracle function dbGetQuery is used to execute an arbitrary SQL statement against the database. When connected to TimesTen, the SQL statement is processed completely within main memory for the fastest response time. > iris.summary <- dbGetQuery(conn, 'SELECT SPECIES, AVG ("SEPAL.LENGTH") AS AVG_SLENGTH, AVG ("SEPAL.WIDTH") AS AVG_SWIDTH, AVG ("PETAL.LENGTH") AS AVG_PLENGTH, AVG ("PETAL.WIDTH") AS AVG_PWIDTH FROM IRIS GROUP BY ROLLUP (SPECIES)') > iris.summary SPECIES AVG_SLENGTH AVG_SWIDTH AVG_PLENGTH AVG_PWIDTH 1 setosa 5.006000 3.428000 1.462 0.246000 2 versicolor 5.936000 2.770000 4.260 1.326000 3 virginica 6.588000 2.974000 5.552 2.026000 4 <NA> 5.843333 3.057333 3.758 1.199333 Finally, disconnect from the TimesTen Database. > dbCommit (conn) [1] TRUE > dbDisconnect (conn) [1] TRUE We encourage you download Oracle software for evaluation from the Oracle Technology Network. • EXALYTICS - If Oracle BI Server Does Not Fail Over to the TimesTen Instance

    - by Ahmed Awan
If the BI Server does not fail over to the second TimesTen instance on the scaled-out node, then ensure that the logical table source (LTS) for the repository has mapped both TimesTen physical data sources. This mapping ensures that at the logical table source level, a mapping exists to both TimesTen instances. If one TimesTen instance is not available, then failover logic for the BI Server at the DSN level tries to connect to the other TimesTen instance. • Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database Performance on SPARC T4-2

    - by Brian
The Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is optimized to run on Oracle's SPARC T4 processor platforms running Oracle Solaris 11 providing unsurpassed scalability, performance, upgradability, protection of investment and return on investment. The following demonstrate the value of combining Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database with SPARC T4 servers and Oracle Solaris 11: On a Mobile Call Processing test, the 2-socket SPARC T4-2 server outperforms: Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M4000 server (4 x 2.66 GHz SPARC64 VII+) by 34%. Oracle's SPARC T3-4 (4 x 1.65 GHz SPARC T3) by 2.7x, or 5.4x per processor. Utilizing the TimesTen Performance Throughput Benchmark (TPTBM), the SPARC T4-2 server protects investments with: 2.1x the overall performance of a 4-socket SPARC Enterprise M4000 server in read-only mode and 1.5x the performance in update-only testing. This is 4.2x more performance per processor than the SPARC64 VII+ 2.66 GHz based system. 10x more performance per processor than the SPARC T2+ 1.4 GHz server. 1.6x better performance per processor than the SPARC T3 1.65 GHz based server. In replication testing, the two socket SPARC T4-2 server is over 3x faster than the performance of a four socket SPARC Enterprise T5440 server in both asynchronous replication environment and the highly available 2-Safe replication. This testing emphasizes parallel replication between systems. The workload can test read-only, update-only, delete and insert operations as required. Mobile Call Processing is a customer-based workload for processing calls made by mobile phone subscribers. The workload has a mixture of read-only, update, and insert-only transactions. The peak throughput performance is measured from multiple concurrent processes executing the transactions until a peak performance is reached via saturation of the available resources. Parallel Replication tests using both asynchronous and 2-Safe replication methods. For asynchronous replication, transactions are processed in batches to maximize the throughput capabilities of the replication server and network. In 2-Safe replication, also known as no data-loss or high availability, transactions are replicated between servers immediately emphasizing low latency. For both environments, performance is measured in the number of parallel replication servers and the maximum transactions-per-second for all concurrent processes. • SQL query performance optimization (TimesTen)

    - by Sergey Mikhanov
    Hi community, I need some help with TimesTen DB query optimization. I made some measures with Java profiler and found the code section that takes most of the time (this code section executes the SQL query). What is strange that this query becomes expensive only for some specific input data. Here’s the example. We have two tables that we are querying, one represents the objects we want to fetch (T_PROFILEGROUP), another represents the many-to-many link from some other table (T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS). We are not querying linked table. These are the queries that I executed with DB profiler running (they are the same except for the ID): Command> select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; < 1169655247309537280 > < 1169655249792565248 > < 1464837997699399681 > 3 rows found. Command> select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1466585677823868928; < 1169655247309537280 > 1 row found. This is what I have in the profiler: 12:14:31.147 1 SQL 2L 6C 10825P Preparing: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272 12:14:31.147 2 SQL 4L 6C 10825P sbSqlCmdCompile ()(E): (Found already compiled version: refCount:01, bucket:47) cmdType:100, cmdNum:1146695. 12:14:31.147 3 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Opening: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; 12:14:31.147 4 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Fetching: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; 12:14:31.148 5 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Fetching: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; 12:14:31.148 6 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Fetching: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; 12:14:31.228 7 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Fetching: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; 12:14:31.228 8 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Closing: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1464837998949302272; 12:14:35.243 9 SQL 2L 6C 10825P Preparing: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1466585677823868928 12:14:35.243 10 SQL 4L 6C 10825P sbSqlCmdCompile ()(E): (Found already compiled version: refCount:01, bucket:44) cmdType:100, cmdNum:1146697. 12:14:35.243 11 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Opening: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1466585677823868928; 12:14:35.243 12 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Fetching: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1466585677823868928; 12:14:35.243 13 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Fetching: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1466585677823868928; 12:14:35.243 14 SQL 4L 6C 10825P Closing: select G.M_ID from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS CG, T_PROFILEGROUP G where CG.M_ID_EID = G.M_ID and CG.M_ID_OID = 1466585677823868928; It’s clear that the first query took almost 100ms, while the second was executed instantly. It’s not about queries precompilation (the first one is precompiled too, as same queries happened earlier). We have DB indices for all columns used here: T_PROFILEGROUP.M_ID, T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS.M_ID_OID and T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS.M_ID_EID. My questions are: Why querying the same set of tables yields such a different performance for different parameters? Which indices are involved here? Is there any way to improve this simple query and/or the DB to make it faster? UPDATE: to give the feeling of size: Command> select count(*) from T_PROFILEGROUP; < 183840 > 1 row found. Command> select count(*) from T_PROFILECONTEXT_PROFILEGROUPS; < 2279104 > 1 row found.

  • Sorting DB tables from least dependent to most dependent

    - by Sergey Mikhanov
Hi community, I'm performing a data migration and the database I'm using only allows to export and import each table separately. In such a setup importing becomes a problem since the order in which tables are imported is important (you have to import referenced tables before referencing ones). Is there any external tool that allows me to list the database tables sorted from least dependent to most dependent? Thanks in advance.

  • OBIEE 11.1.1 - Introduction to OBIEE 11g Full Sample App

    - by user809526
Isn't it nice to discover OBIEE 11g around a nice "How To" catalog of features? to observe OBI and Essbase relationships at work? to discover TimesTen? The OBIEE 11g Full Sample App (FSA) is a comprehensive collection of examples designed to demonstrate the latest Oracle BIEE 11g capabilities and design best practices: Enhanced visualizations as Geo-spacial maps and interactive dashboards, Action Framework,  BI Publisher, Scorecard and Strategy Management, Mobile style sheets, Semantic layer modeling, Multi-source federation, Integration with products such as Essbase, Oracle OLAP, ODM, TimesTen, ODI and more The FSA is intended to be comprehensive, it is big (see CAVEAT below). The FSA is not an Oracle product, it is a good will free deployment of OBIEE/Essbase designed to exemplify OBIEE features, infrastructure and security around the Fusion Middleware components. Its contents and code are distributed free for demonstrative purposes only. It is neither maintained nor supported by Oracle as a licensed product. The OBIEE Full Sample App is independent of the default Sample App that comes with the OBIEE product. BENEFITS The FSA helps as a demonstrator of OBIEE 11g best practices, a tutorial, an environment "Test & Scrap", a SR bench (regression, conflicts), a tuning bench, a quick ready made POC seed for projects, a security options environment, ... The FSA - Is organized around a catalog of functional features - Has been deployed over 1000 times, it should be stable RELEASE The Full Sample App (V107) is bound to OBIEE 11.1.1.5 and Essbase 11.1.2.1 (November 2011). The FSA release dates are independent of the Product GA date (OBIEE). In early December 2011, a new functional Patch (V110) is released. It is easily applied (in less than 15 mins) on top of OBIEE SampleApp 11.1.1.5 (V107). The patch (V110) includes additional functional examples:        1. Web Catalog Statistics Application: Provides detailed insight into your web catalog content, dormant catalog objects, webcat impact analysis for metadata changes and more        2. Data inflation Scripts: A set of simple SQL procedures to quickly inflate SampleApp Fact and Dimension data to millions of records in a few minutes        3. Public Content Extensions Framework: A patching framework for public examples and contributions leveraging SampleApp        4. Additional report examples (including bridge report, external chart integrations) and bug fixes DISTRIBUTION as VBox image (November 2011) The ready made VBox image is designed to run on Virtual Box. It can be converted to VMware (see another BLOG). 1/ http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/obiee-samples-167534.html VBox Image Deployment Guide Sampleapp_v107_GA.ovf - VBox image key file The above http URL provides the user:password for the ftp URLs below. 2/ ftp://user:[email protected]/static/SampleAppV107/ 12 "7-zip" files Sampleapp_v107_GA_7_20.7z.001 -> .012 We recommend 7-zip file manager for unzipping (http://www.7-zip.org/). Select Unzip here option, it will create the contents under a directory named "SampleApp_10722". On Windows, it is important to download and save zip file under the root directory (e.g. C:\ or D:\) because of possible long pathnames. 3/ ftp://user:[email protected]/static/SampleAppV107/Unzipped_Version/ 4 files Sampleapp_v107_GA-disk[1234].vmdk Important note: Check the provided checksums (md5sum). Please do it! DISTRIBUTION as Installation files for existing OBI 11.1.1.5 (November 2011) http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/obiee-samples-167534.html Install files Deployment Guide SampleApp_10722_1.zip - 198 MB CAVEAT Many computers have RAM chips problems that keep often silent ... until you manipulate big files. It is strongly advised you run some memory check program eg MEMTEST in GRUB boot manager. Running md5sum repeatedly onto the very same big file must be consistent [same result], else a hardware memory problem is suspected. For Virtual Box, you should most likely enable VT-X (Vanderpool) hardware virtualization in BIOS. A free disk space of 80 GB is required to perform safely the VBox image installation. A Virtual Machine of minimum 6 to 7 GB memory fits the needs of combining OBIEE and Essbase execution.

  • Setting Up and Running Summary Advisor on an Exalytics Machine (Oracle-by-Example)

    - by Saresh
If you are running Oracle BI on an Exalytics machine, you can use Summary Advisor to identify the aggregates that will increase query performance. Summary Advisor intelligently recommends an optimal list of aggregate tables based on query patterns that will achieve maximum query performance gain while meeting specific resource constraints. Summary Advisor then generates an aggregate creation script that can be run to create the recommended aggregate tables. Aggregate tables reduce query times by storing precomputed results for queries that include rolled-up data. This tutorial covers steps to set up, configure, and run Summary Advisor on an Exalytics machine using TimesTen database as a target for storing aggregates. You can find the Oracle By Example (OBE) in the Oracle Learning Library (OLL). The content in OLL is available to all customers, partners, and employees.

  • Excitement! Updated Underground PHP and Oracle Manual is Available for Download

    - by cj
We're thrilled to have a major update of the free Underground PHP and Oracle Manual released on OTN. The Underground PHP and Oracle Manual is designed to bridge the gap between the many PHP scripting language and the many Oracle Database books available. It contains unique material about PHP's OCI8 extension for Oracle Database, and about other components in the PHP-Oracle ecosystem. It shows PHP developers how to use PHP and Oracle together, efficiently and easily. The book has been completely refreshed. It has been updated for Oracle XE 11g and the latest PHP OCI8 extension. There are new chapters about using PHP with Oracle TimesTen, NetBeans and Oracle Tuxedo. There is also a new chapter about installing PHP on Oracle Solaris. The book now clocks in at 347 pages of great content. Acknowledgements are due to all those who have helped with this and previous editions of the book. Thanks to the product teams that assisted with brand new content. In particular Craig Mohrman contributed the chapter about PHP on Solaris. Jeffry Rubinoff contributed the base text for the chapter on PHP and NetBeans.
