  • How do I compile a Wikipedia lens and install?

    - by user49523
I read a tutorial about how to compile and install a Wikipedia lens, but it didn't work. The tutorial sounds easy - i just copied and pasted to the file that was suppose to edit. I have tried some times and here are 2 edits edit 1: import logging import optparse import gettext from gettext import gettext as _ gettext.textdomain('wikipedia') from singlet.lens import SingleScopeLens, IconViewCategory, ListViewCategory from wikipedia import wikipediaconfig import urllib2 import simplejson class WikipediaLens(SingleScopeLens): wiki = "http://en.wikipedia.org" def wikipedia_query(self,search): try: search = search.replace(" ", "|") url = ("%s/w/api.php?action=opensearch&limit=25&format=json&search=%s" % (self.wiki, search)) results = simplejson.loads(urllib2.urlopen(url).read()) print "Searching Wikipedia" return results[1] except (IOError, KeyError, urllib2.URLError, urllib2.HTTPError, simplejson.JSONDecodeError): print "Error : Unable to search Wikipedia" return [] class Meta: name = 'Wikipedia' description = 'Wikipedia Lens' search_hint = 'Search Wikipedia' icon = 'wikipedia.svg' search_on_blank=True # TODO: Add your categories articles_category = ListViewCategory("Articles", "dialog-information-symbolic") def search(self, search, results): for article in self.wikipedia_query(search): results.append("%s/wiki/%s" % (self.wiki, article), "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Wikipedia-logo.png", self.articles_category, "text/html", article, "Wikipedia Article", "%s/wiki/%s" % (self.wiki, article)) pass edit 2: import urllib2 import simplejson import logging import optparse import gettext from gettext import gettext as _ gettext.textdomain('wikipediaa') from singlet.lens import SingleScopeLens, IconViewCategory, ListViewCategory from wikipediaa import wikipediaaconfig class WikipediaaLens(SingleScopeLens): wiki = "http://en.wikipedia.org" def wikipedia_query(self,search): try: search = search.replace(" ", "|") url = ("%s/w/api.php?action=opensearch&limit=25&format=json&search=%s" % (self.wiki, search)) results = simplejson.loads(urllib2.urlopen(url).read()) print "Searching Wikipedia" return results[1] except (IOError, KeyError, urllib2.URLError, urllib2.HTTPError, simplejson.JSONDecodeError): print "Error : Unable to search Wikipedia" return [] def search(self, search, results): for article in self.wikipedia_query(search): results.append("%s/wiki/%s" % (self.wiki, article), "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Wikipedia-logo.png", self.articles_category, "text/html", article, "Wikipedia Article", "%s/wiki/%s" % (self.wiki, article)) pass class Meta: name = 'Wikipedia' description = 'Wikipedia Lens' search_hint = 'Search Wikipedia' icon = 'wikipedia.svg' search_on_blank=True # TODO: Add your categories articles_category = ListViewCategory("Articles", "dialog-information-symbolic") def search(self, search, results): # TODO: Add your search results results.append('https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/Lenses/Singlet', 'ubuntu-logo', self.example_category, "text/html", 'Learn More', 'Find out how to write your Unity Lens', 'https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/Lenses/Singlet') pass so .. what can i change in the edit ? (if anybody give me the entire edit file edited i will appreciate)

  • Wikipedia embedded in WinForms App Tutorial

    - by RHaguiuda
Can anyone post a tutorial here on how to show a Wikipedia article in a .NET WinForms application (C# or VB)? If the article can be placed in a string it suffices, there`s no need to put it on any control. I found some information on Wikipedia's API. After reading it, I added the reference to web service but can`t find a way to make this work. And if it's possible, explain how images are downloaded from wiki (link or image itself).

  • Wikipedia API: list=alllinks confusion

    - by Chris Salij
I'm doing a research project for the summer and I've got to use get some data from Wikipedia, store it and then do some analysis on it. I'm using the Wikipedia API to gather the data and I've got that down pretty well. What my questions is in regards to the links-alllinks option in the API doc here After reading the description, both there and in the API itself (it's down and bit and I can't link directly to the section), I think I understand what it's supposed to return. However when I ran a query it gave me back something I didn't expect. Here's the query I ran: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=google&rvprop=ids|timestamp|user|comment|content&rvlimit=1&list=alllinks&alunique&allimit=40&format=xml Which in essence says: Get the last revision of the Google page, include the id, timestamp, user, comment and content of each revision, and return it in XML format. The allinks (I thought) should give me back a list of wikipedia pages which point to the google page (In this case the first 40 unique ones). I'm not sure what the policy is on swears, but this is the result I got back exactly: <?xml version="1.0"?> <api> <query><normalized> <n from="google" to="Google" /> </normalized> <pages> <page pageid="1092923" ns="0" title="Google"> <revisions> <rev revid="366826294" parentid="366673948" user="Citation bot" timestamp="2010-06-08T17:18:31Z" comment="Citations: [161]Tweaked: url. [[User:Mono|Mono]]" xml:space="preserve"> <!-- The page content, I've replaced this cos its not of interest --> </rev> </revisions> </page> </pages> <alllinks> <l ns="0" title="!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*was up all u hater just stopingby to show u some love*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!!!!!!!!!&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;&amp;********(( )))))F/W///CHRYSLER/FUCKING/FUCKING/FUCKING/I HATE THE QUEEN!!!/I AM HORRID HENRY/Chrysler Cirrus/php" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!!Hephaestos IS A FUCKING WHINY GUY!!!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!Do you really want to see this article on your default search?" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!Legal!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!!YOU ARE A COCKSUCKING WHINY GREASER!!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!BESQUERKAN!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!Fuck You!!!" /> <l ns="0" title="!!!Fuck You!!! No nearly what I thought I'd get. I've done a fair bit of searching but I can't seem to find a direct answer to my question. What should the list=alllinks option return? Why am I getting this crap in there? Thanks for your help

  • Google Chrome custom search engine for secure Wikipedia

    - by gdejohn
I have this custom search engine set up in Google Chrome: https://encrypted.google.com/search?q=site%3Aen.wikipedia.org+%s&btnI=745 It searches Google for site:en.wikipedia.org {query}, and the btnI=745 is for I'm Feeling Lucky, so it automatically redirects to the first result. I like this better than using Wikipedia's search function directly because it gives me very effective approximate string matching, so I can misspell my search, or leave a word out, or just search for some keywords, and I still get what I'm looking for right away. What I'd like is for it to use Wikipedia's secure gateway: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/ It's easy enough to set up a custom search engine that uses the secure version of Wikipedia's search function directly, but I can't figure out how to correctly incorporate it into my version going through Google. Nothing I've tried works.

  • Wikipedia Images don't show up in browsers

    - by mantra
It's a weird issue with wikipedia which had left me frustrated. When I go to wikipedia, with different browsers ( IE8, Chrome3, Opera10 ) no image in the site will show up. Even right-clicking the image to ( show, save, open in new tab/window ) will return nothing except when open in new tab/window I'll get a black horizontal line across the page. All my browsing across the web goes flawlessly, and every image in every site show up normally except in the wikipedia site. I have win7 ultimate with all updates.

  • Is wikipedia a valuable resource for studying data structures? (can we call it complete?)

    - by Amir Nasr
Can I depend on wikipedia to learn data structures fully using the list of data structures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_data_structures and the links they refer to? The same question for algorithms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_algorithm_general_topics ?... What's after learning algorithms and data structures? Specializing in a certain field of algorithms such as computer graohics, memory management...etc? or what could be the plan for mastering programming after knowing the language syntax and the background about program design and programming logic? I asked about wikipedia because i would like to find a complete resource or are least a resource which would be enough for the field of data structures instead of searching for separate articles in different places in other words an alternative to books which may even be more complete.

  • Extract paragraphs from Wikipedia API using PHP cURL

    - by Kane
Here's what I'm trying to do using the Wikipedia (MediaWiki) API - http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php Do a GET on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=xml&action=opensearch&search=[keyword] to retrieve a list of suggested pages for the keyword Loop through each suggested page using a GET on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=query&export&titles=[page title] Extract any paragraphs found on the page into an array Do something with the array I'm stuck on #3. I can see a bunch of JSON data that includes "\n\n" between paragraphs, but for some reason the PHP explode() function doesn't work. Essentially I just want to grab the "meat" of each Wikipedia page (not titles or any formatting, just the content) and break it by paragraph into an array. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Getting Wikipedia infoboxes in a format that Ruby can understand

    - by hadees
I am trying to get the data from Wikipedia's infoboxes into a hash or something so that I can use it in my Ruby on Rails program. Specifically I'm interested in the Infobox company and Infobox person. The example I have been using is "Ford Motor Company". I want to get the company info for that and the person info for the people linked to in Ford's company box. I've tried figuring out how to do this from the Wikipedia API or DBPedia but I haven't had much luck. I know wikipedia can return some things as json which I could parse with ruby but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the infobox. In the case of DBPedia I am kind of lost on how to even query it to get the info for Ford Motor Company.

  • Fetch excerpt from Wikipedia article?

    - by Felix
I've been up and down the Wikipedia API, but I can't figure out if there's a nice way to fetch the excerpt of an article (usually the first paragraph). It would be nice to get the HTML formatting of that paragraph, too. The only way I currently see of getting something that resembles a snippet is by performing a fulltext search (example), but that's not really what I want (too short). Is there any other way to fetch the first paragraph of a Wikipedia article than barbarically parsing HTML/WikiText?

  • YQL Open Data Table for Wikipedia

Has anyone written a YQL open data table for accessing Wikipedia? I've had a hunt around the internet and found mention of people using YQL for extracting various bits of information from Wikipedia pages such as microformats, links or content but I haven't been able to find an open data table that ties it all together.

  • How does Wikipedia's SEO work?

    - by Josh Siegl
i'm sorry if this question is misplaced or doesn't belong here. I'm currently developing an app for android and IOS and of course i'm thinking about the best ways to market it. Last night I Google'd somebody else's app and the third link in was a Wikipedia page on it, I never even thought of apps having Wikipedia pages, but alas there it was. And of course it was very helpful in determining exactly what the app did and in what cases it was useful for (something that's absolutely crucial for potential customers to understand). So then I got to thinking that I should create a Wiki for my app, but how does Wikipedia apply SEO? I know that the question could be overly complicated or specific, i'm just looking for general answers. For instance when somebody Google's my app, where does Wikipedia display on the results? When I create a Wiki for my app, how do I ensure that the Wikipedia page shows in the search results (is there any way to do that? ) I'm sure i'll find all of this out later when I create a Wiki for my app, I guess i'm just asking this out of curiosity. So how does Wikipedia's search engine optimization work? (on a page by page basis)

  • Retrieving search results from Google, Google Images, Wikipedia, Flickr, Dictionary.com

    - by Arjun Vasudevan
I've an ASP.NET page with a textbox and a option from user of the following choices: Wikipedia, Google, Dictionary.com, Flickr, Google images. The user enters a word(s) in the textbox and selects a choice among the following. Depending on the choice select by the user I wish to return the following. Wikipedia: Return the content and link to the page corresponding to the topic about the word. Google: Return the top 10 results of google search for this word. Flickr: Return a few images atmost 10 images from flickr search GoogleImage: Return a few images from google image search. Dictionary: Return the meaning of the word. How can I do that? Which tool box control can I use for holding the results coming from these sites?

  • A Guided Tour of Complexity

    - by JoshReuben
I just re-read Complexity – A Guided Tour by Melanie Mitchell , protégé of Douglas Hofstadter ( author of “Gödel, Escher, Bach”) http://www.amazon.com/Complexity-Guided-Tour-Melanie-Mitchell/dp/0199798109/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339744329&sr=8-1 here are some notes and links:   Evolved from Cybernetics, General Systems Theory, Synergetics some interesting transdisciplinary fields to investigate: Chaos Theory - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory – small differences in initial conditions (such as those due to rounding errors in numerical computation) yield widely diverging outcomes for chaotic systems, rendering long-term prediction impossible. System Dynamics / Cybernetics - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Dynamics – study of how feedback changes system behavior Network Theory - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_theory – leverage Graph Theory to analyze symmetric  / asymmetric relations between discrete objects Algebraic Topology - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_topology – leverage abstract algebra to analyze topological spaces There are limits to deterministic systems & to computation. Chaos Theory definitely applies to training an ANN (artificial neural network) – different weights will emerge depending upon the random selection of the training set. In recursive Non-Linear systems http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonlinear_system – output is not directly inferable from input. E.g. a Logistic map: Xt+1 = R Xt(1-Xt) Different types of bifurcations, attractor states and oscillations may occur – e.g. a Lorenz Attractor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenz_system Feigenbaum Constants http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feigenbaum_constants express ratios in a bifurcation diagram for a non-linear map – the convergent limit of R (the rate of period-doubling bifurcations) is 4.6692016 Maxwell’s Demon - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell%27s_demon - the Second Law of Thermodynamics has only a statistical certainty – the universe (and thus information) tends towards entropy. While any computation can theoretically be done without expending energy, with finite memory, the act of erasing memory is permanent and increases entropy. Life & thought is a counter-example to the universe’s tendency towards entropy. Leo Szilard and later Claude Shannon came up with the Information Theory of Entropy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy_(information_theory) whereby Shannon entropy quantifies the expected value of a message’s information in bits in order to determine channel capacity and leverage Coding Theory (compression analysis). Ludwig Boltzmann came up with Statistical Mechanics - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_mechanics – whereby our Newtonian perception of continuous reality is a probabilistic and statistical aggregate of many discrete quantum microstates. This is relevant for Quantum Information Theory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_information and the Physics of Information - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_information. Hilbert’s Problems http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert's_problems pondered whether mathematics is complete, consistent, and decidable (the Decision Problem – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entscheidungsproblem – is there always an algorithm that can determine whether a statement is true).  Godel’s Incompleteness Theorems http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del's_incompleteness_theorems  proved that mathematics cannot be both complete and consistent (e.g. “This statement is not provable”). Turing through the use of Turing Machines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_machine symbol processors that can prove mathematical statements) and Universal Turing Machines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Turing_machine Turing Machines that can emulate other any Turing Machine via accepting programs as well as data as input symbols) that computation is limited by demonstrating the Halting Problem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halting_problem (is is not possible to know when a program will complete – you cannot build an infinite loop detector). You may be used to thinking of 1 / 2 / 3 dimensional systems, but Fractal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal systems are defined by self-similarity & have non-integer Hausdorff Dimensions !!!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fractals_by_Hausdorff_dimension – the fractal dimension quantifies the number of copies of a self similar object at each level of detail – eg Koch Snowflake - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_snowflake Definitions of complexity: size, Shannon entropy, Algorithmic Information Content (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithmic_information_theory - size of shortest program that can generate a description of an object) Logical depth (amount of info processed), thermodynamic depth (resources required). Complexity is statistical and fractal. John Von Neumann’s other machine was the Self-Reproducing Automaton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-replicating_machine  . Cellular Automata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_automaton are alternative form of Universal Turing machine to traditional Von Neumann machines where grid cells are locally synchronized with their neighbors according to a rule. Conway’s Game of Life http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life demonstrates various emergent constructs such as “Glider Guns” and “Spaceships”. Cellular Automatons are not practical because logical ops require a large number of cells – wasteful & inefficient. There are no compilers or general program languages available for Cellular Automatons (as far as I am aware). Random Boolean Networks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_network are extensions of cellular automata where nodes are connected at random (not to spatial neighbors) and each node has its own rule –> they demonstrate the emergence of complex  & self organized behavior. Stephen Wolfram’s (creator of Mathematica, so give him the benefit of the doubt) New Kind of Science http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_New_Kind_of_Science proposes the universe may be a discrete Finite State Automata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite-state_machine whereby reality emerges from simple rules. I am 2/3 through this book. It is feasible that the universe is quantum discrete at the plank scale and that it computes itself – Digital Physics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_physics – a simulated reality? Anyway, all behavior is supposedly derived from simple algorithmic rules & falls into 4 patterns: uniform , nested / cyclical, random (Rule 30 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_30) & mixed (Rule 110 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_110 localized structures – it is this that is interesting). interaction between colliding propagating signal inputs is then information processing. Wolfram proposes the Principle of Computational Equivalence - http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PrincipleofComputationalEquivalence.html - all processes that are not obviously simple can be viewed as computations of equivalent sophistication. Meaning in information may emerge from analogy & conceptual slippages – see the CopyCat program: http://cognitrn.psych.indiana.edu/rgoldsto/courses/concepts/copycat.pdf Scale Free Networks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale-free_network have a distribution governed by a Power Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_law - much more common than Normal Distribution). They are characterized by hubs (resilience to random deletion of nodes), heterogeneity of degree values, self similarity, & small world structure. They grow via preferential attachment http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preferential_attachment – tipping points triggered by positive feedback loops. 2 theories of cascading system failures in complex systems are Self-Organized Criticality http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-organized_criticality and Highly Optimized Tolerance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highly_optimized_tolerance. Computational Mechanics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_mechanics – use of computational methods to study phenomena governed by the principles of mechanics. This book is a great intuition pump, but does not cover the more mathematical subject of Computational Complexity Theory – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_complexity_theory I am currently reading this book on this subject: http://www.amazon.com/Computational-Complexity-Christos-H-Papadimitriou/dp/0201530821/ref=pd_sim_b_1   stay tuned for that review!

  • Can I use wikipedia/commons images to create a logo for my program?

    - by bitmask
I'm not perfectly clear on the implications of the GFDL for reusing pictures in this manner. Would adding a reference in the git's root folder's README suffice, or would that clutter every use of the logo, as you would have to attribute all original contributors on every single usage (like, e.g. presentations, flyers, websites, ...)? The software itself qualifies as FOSS, although it doesn't have a GNU* license.

  • Enterprise Architecture - Wikipedia

I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for EA and found this chart which does a great job showing the differences of ENTERPRISE Architecture vs. SOLUTION Architecture across several categories.  This really gets at the heart of a misconception many people have about what EA is and where it sits in the grand business –> technical detail continuum. The following image from the 2006 FEA Practice Guidance of US OMB sheds light on the relationship between enterprise architecture and segment(BPR) or Solution architectures. (From this figure and a bit of thinking[which?] one can see that software architecture is truly a solution architecture discipline, for example.) • Redirected wikipedia request

    - by Le_Coeur
Hi people, i need to write a program, that can redirect's http://localhost:8080 to en.wikipedia.org, it seems to be easy, but i have some problems(only with wikipedia with another sites works good). I make url to wikipedia: URL url = new URL("http", "en.wikipedia.org", 80, "/wiki"); than URLConnection, extract headers, and when i want connection.getInputStream(), i received message 404 Not Found. So i have tried some hack for host header, because in this way host header is localhost:8080, therefor i have tried to change host header to wikipedia, and it works, but after request in browser http://localhost:8080 wikipedia opens, but url in browser changes to en.wikipedia.org, but i want proceed with localhost :)
