  • differences between using wmode="transparent", "opaque", "window" for an embedded object on webpage

    when embedding a Flash object with the <object and <embed tag, there is an attribute called "wmode". It seems that most of the time, wmode="transparent" is the same as wmode="opaque" as the Flash doesn't actually have any transparent color so that the bottom HTML element is to be shown. As a result, "opaque" should be faster than "transparent" since it require less processing for transparency, yet most of the time i see Flash object embedded with "transparent" instead of "opaque". "opaque" is needed so that other HTML element won't be covered up by the Flash object. (such as a menu item that pops up an extra sub-menu won't be covered up by the Flash object). By the way, is there formal documentation for wmode's "opaque", "transparent", and "window"? I was only able to find blogs that describe it but not the formal documentation. thanks.

    What benefit does using wmode give if you're not needing transparency? I've look through this forum and found posts talking about the different wmode attributes here, but I want to know why I need to use it in the first place and if removing it will break anything else. My application uses wmode="opaque" at the moment but it seems to stop scrolling in Firefox. I use JavaScript focus() to allow the user to type directly into the flash ap. Otherwise I'm using the stock standard Flex Builder 3 HTML template. Edit: The ap uses the whole page, without any additional elements needing to be displayed over the flash part.

  • Wmode transparent and symbols issue with foreign keyboard

    Hello, I have the known issue with wmode transparent and input textfield in my page. I know that the question is often asked but I have a special situation with that case. I need to embed my swf with wmode=transparent but in my swf I have an input textfield and the bug with "@" or "." symbols exists. I have a french keyboard and I decided to overcome this problem with a string replacement with the FirefoxWmodeFix class from Manmaru (see the link below). http://www.manmaru.fr/mlab/?p=95 It works for my keyboard but I need that "trick" with EN/DE/IT keyboard. Could anyone help me with the right combination of keys on different keyboard and different OS system to display "@" and "." symbols. I don't have any foreign Windows system to get the key code for each combination. Or if anyone has another solution, I will be pleased to hear that one. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Problem with Juggernaut and transparent wmode in Adobe AIR

    Hi, I am trying to use juggernaut in Adobe AIR application, however the big issue with this is that the juggernaut flash file should have wmode parameter set to 'transparent'. This is a bit of a problem for juggernaut because it seems that it doesn't work with that parameter included. The interesting part is that it is working under Linux on all browsers and in air application, but on Windows it's working only with Safari all other browsers including the AIR application are not even connecting to the juggernaut server. So the question is, what is the cause of this and if anyone had similar problem I would be interested to hear about solutions or workarounds. Thanks, Peco

    How to make flash movie (an advertising banner) ignore <param name="wmode" value="transparent">? There are some CMS systems which insert flash movies automatically with transparent wmode option. Flash Player ignores banner's background color, makes it transparent and displays it on web page background. I can workaround it using additional layer at the bottom with a large rectangle of desired color, but I think it is inefficient and inelegant. How to do this better?

    I have a flash player on a page which plays videos. I also have modal popups which need to be able to display over the top of the flash player when they are opened, etc... I can't change either of these requirements since they are part of the spec I have been given. Flash seems to ignore z-indexes I set on it with css, and the modal popups will therefore only appear above the video player if I set the video player's wmode to opaque or transparent. However, if I do this then the full screen functionality stops working correctly: when I un-fullscreen the video it stays zoomed in. In short If you open a popup on an item page or another page containing flash the popup should be displayed above this. Flash ignores z-index values. You can stop flash ignoring z-index values by setting wmode to opaque or transparent rather than the default: window. This stops full screen from working correctly. Has anybody else faced this issue before? What can I do to fix it? I was thinking of recreating the video player with wmode=opaque whenever I opened a modal popup and then switching it back to wmode=window when the modal popup is closed, since this would mean that the popup should display above it (as wmode=opaque) and the fullscreen should work correct (as wmode=window). However, this is not ideal at all: as well as being a hack it would also mean that the video would stop playing if somebody clicked a button which opened a popup. Cheers!

  • Safari flash wmode not working - anything wrong with this embed?

    I've got a problem with this embed in Safari. It works just fine on all other browsers, IE6 included. The problem is that the embed seems to jump to the very top layer, ignoring all z-index or positioning statements. This is important, because several html design features are overlayed on the flash. This embed was written to work with swfobject, but still doesnt work when: swfobject disabled wmode = transparent/opaque/removed entirely Is this a problem with safari or the code? And if it's the code then what does safari do differently to all the other browsers? Bah.   • Can't make wmode: 'transparent' work on sIFR 3

    I've been trying to use sIFR to change some text in my webpage. It works fine until I try to get it to use a transparent canvas. The code I'm using is as follow. I have no idea to fix it. I've seen a lot of people make this questions about wmode: 'transparent' and it all seems to work but mine. Can someone give me a hand??? Without the wmode: 'transparent' property it works fine.   • Flash - Firefox issue

    I realised that if I do have a flash object and do not include a 'wmode' attribute, I will not be able to overlay HTML because the flash will always play on top. But if I do include a 'wmode:transparent' , the flash object completely disappears in firefox, whereas if I use 'wmode:opaque' , I get a white box in place of the Flash object. I've looked at many forums - many questions - but somehow everyone's problem gets resolved when they use one of the aforementioned attributes. So....HELP !!! Note: using either attribute works in IE.

    I have the following embed tag: <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="505" src="url_to_video" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed> I have about five of theses on a page, and I'd like to add the attribute wmode="opaque" to all of them. However, I tried to do it like this and it didnt' work: $j("embed").attr('wmode','opaque'); Is there another way I can dynamically set the attribute wmode="opaque" ? Thanks!

  • html5media & flowplayer wmode issues...

    I'm working on our new homepage and need to implement a solution that will run a video across iphone/ipad and the standard web browsers. I found a pretty decent solution with html5media - http://code.google.com/p/html5media/ but ran across an issue with a jquery dropdown falling behind the the swf object (this only happens on FF & IE - works fine on Safari & Chrome because it's loading mp4 instead of a swf object). I know the issue is the wmode setting but can not for the life of me figure out where to set it in the html5media (http://html5media.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/src/html5media.min.js). I'm hoping someone can help me or possibly give me a better solution of implementing the video.   • How can I set a Java applet transparency to show contents behind it?

    I've got a web page with an applet inside. This applet is a drop target on a drag and drop action from the OS, I simply take an image from a folder, drag it on the applet and something happens. I give this webpage to a graphic designer and he ask to if he can put an image behind the java applet so he can simulate to change the background using CSS (it is a skinned app and graphic design can change during execution). Practically i supposed to do: <div> <applet width="50" height="50" /> </div> with this CSS: div { width:50px; height:50px; background-image: url(image.jpg) center center no-repeat; } But it doesn't work (background is opaque). It is possible to set transparency to the applet without loosing drag and drop capabilities ? I'm searching something similar to flash wmode parameter. Better solutions implies only changes on the CSS/HTML without recompiling java class so the designing team can change the page structure without changing the Java.

The video plays, so that's working BUT: I want to have an old school tv (round corners) in foreground with switches and so on. The tv is an image with transparent pixels in the middle, so that a video lying behind the tv will shine through as if the video would be shown on the tv. But first of all the video has a border that I can't remove and second it's always in the foreground. In Safari and in Firefox and Mac it's working. So is it an iPhone thing, could it be that it simply won't work on iPhone ? Or do I have some css/html typos ?

  • Invalid Argument IE 8 jQuery

    Hi, I have this particular script that runs so that the flash elements don't show up on top of my slide out navigation. This redraws that flash element with wmode as opaque and so it shows up under the navigation. Works perfectly with Chrome and FireFox but not with IE. In IE I get an Invalid Argument in jquery.min.js code 0 Line 103 char 460. Can anyone help me as to why? If I comment out the second line of code inside the function then there is no error, but then doesn't work in FireFox.     I have an embed window media player which is always on top of other DIV tags. I used wmode = opaque; WindowlessVideo = -1 but it does not help.   • A very strange problem related to Flash and Java

    Hello, I have created one simple program for showing webcam of the user. It works absolutely fine when i am running without integrating it in my java web application. But as soon as i copy paste the same files in Netbeans 6.8 and try to run it. My swf file is visible but the buttons in it are totally unclickable. I get the message of allow or deny showing webcam but the buttons are not clickable. It makes my application totally useless. I thought it's a minor issue but now it's getting on my nerves. I am trying it since 3 hours but didn't find any solution. I don't think anybody faced this issue till now that's why can't seem to find any thread in any forum on it in google. I am using Netbeans 6.8, Ubuntu, Glassfish V3 and JSF. Thanks in advance :). UPDATE:- It works fine on Windows XP. Then what can be the problem with Ubuntu? Any kind of permission rights that i need to give? 2nd UPDATE:- I think this is bug with Flash. I want it to be 600px width and 500px height. Even the style attribute doesn't work. Can i set height and width from within Flash? because without explicitly setting height and width, it looks very small. I think this should be very easy for all now. Thanks in advance :)
