what can be the reasons that windows XP let the sata hdd work in pio mode instead of dma?

i have a windows xp system with 2 sata hard drives. WD Raptor 300 & WD Caviar 500. the Mobo is P31 and have udma enabled in the bios. now i have the raptor working as DMA mode while the caviar works as PIO mode. so what can be the possible reasons for that? thansk
