How can I do a virus check on a USB thumb drive using VirtualBox?

My copies of Norton and AVG anti-virus won't install on my Server 2008 R2 machine, so I have set up an XP guest on Virtual Box. I'd like to installone of these on the XP machine to check a thumb drive for viruses.

How do I set things up so that I'm confident my host machine is safe, and that only the guest machine 'reacts' to the thumb drive?
