Are there any ways to lower/optimize my ping for gaming?

Hi, I play QuakeLive and most servers are 80+ ping, except for geographically local servers where I get 50 ping. Is there any way to lower my ping via settings in Windows 7, my DSL modem or my router? I am running Tomato on a WRT54GL and my desktop is wired to it (not wifi).
