unable to mount disks in usb dvd drive

I have 2 USB DVD drives. One that I borrowed from work which I have been testing with which works fine for me, which is why I brought one of myself. When I try and mount my new dvd drive this happens:

[18:06:45][arcath@londinium][~] sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd/
mount: special device /dev/sr0 does not exist

/dev/sr0 is only in the list when the drive is attached and it works on other machines using the same cables so it must be something with my server.

The server is running Ubuntu 10.10 server
