Black screen on Windows 7 right after opening Google Sketchup or Minecraft

I get a black screen on Windows 7 right after opening Google Sketchup or Minecraft. I presume there are other applications that cause this too - but I have not tried to open them.

The window initially stops responding for a few seconds, before I get a black screen and my Skype call ends abruptly. I have tried waiting for a few minutes but nothing happens. I have to power down my computer and then boot it up again. This is becoming an annoyance, and I don't know what's causing it.

My graphics card is an ATI RADEON XPRESS 1100.

If you need any more info or if I've missed anything please ask.
