Why would the boot screen be displayed on the external monitor?

This is not really a problem, I'd just like to know the reason behind this. If I boot without an external monitor both the BIOS settings and the boot screen are displayed on the built-in LCD monitor.

However, when I boot with a monitor attached, the boot screen and the BIOS settings are displayed on the external monitor. There isn't any setting available regarding this in the BIOS setup (as opposed to my Thinkpad T42 where there is an option regarding this).

System specification

ASUS K53SV laptop
DELL IN2030M monitor (connected via VGA)
Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64bit
