creating a bootable USB stick on OS X

I'm trying to create a bootable USB stick on OS X using http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx

When this finishes, I get a message in terminal saying "695+1 records in 695+1 records out 729067520 bytes transferred in 264.563662 secs (2755736 bytes/sec)"

But a message pops up saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

Options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject.

What am I doing wrong or omitting.

(oh - complete novice)
