  • usb mouse/keyboard doesn't work with 3.11.0-12-generic kernel

    - by x-yuri
I can't use my usb keyboard/mouse after upgrade from raring to saucy. The keyboard works in grub menu and if I boot with the previous kernel version (3.8.0-31-generic). My new kernel version is 3.11.0-12-generic. I've got Mad Catz R.A.T.7 wired USB mouse, Canyon CNL-MBMSO02 wired usb mouse and Logitech diNovo Edge wireless keyboard, connected to computer through Logitech Unifying Receiver. Using PS/2 keyboard I've managed to get some information. dmesg says: [ 0.166273] ACPI: bus type USB registered [ 0.166273] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs [ 0.166273] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub [ 0.166273] usbcore: registered new device driver usb ... Before that I had a problem with logging in to GNOME. During which I upgraded all the packages at one point (apt-get upgrade) and it stopped booting at all (it didn't get to login screen). Then I fixed PATH issue and now I've got this usb-not-working issue. I tried reinstalling kernel, to no effect. Is there anything else I can do to fix or diagnose the problem?

  • HSDPA modem only working on certain USB ports

    - by nabulke
Depending on which USB port I use to connect my HSDPA modem, the network manager will connect to the internet or not. I used to work (i.e. established a internet connection automatically) on all ports, but over time it simply stopped on some ports. lsusb output in all cases looks like that (Device ID varies depending on USB port): Bus 001 Device 009: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem / E270 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem Any ideas what could cause this behaviour? What can I do to fix this? ADDED One additional information about the modem: if connected via USB it will be available as as harddrive AND as a HSDPA modem (kind of a duality...). In the error case, it will only be shown as a harddrive. • USB external drive is not recognized by any OS, how to troubleshoot in Ubuntu?

    - by Breno
First of all I would like to inform you that I saw a question similar to mine but the error was different, so here's my problem... I have an external HD samsung s2 model of 500GB and a day to day just stopped working, tried in other systems (windows and mac) however are not recognized. In the windows device manager when I insert the usb it states that the device in question are not working properly. Well, in the logs of my ubuntu 4.12 I see the following message when I insert my usb device in: [ 2967.560216] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd [ 2967.680182] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2967.904176] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2968.120227] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 3 using uhci_hcd [ 2968.240207] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2968.464063] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2968.680087] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 4 using uhci_hcd [ 2969.092085] usb 7-2: device not accepting address 4, error -71 [ 2969.208155] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 5 using uhci_hcd [ 2969.624076] usb 7-2: device not accepting address 5, error -71 [ 2969.624118] hub 7-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2 [ 4520.240340] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 6 using uhci_hcd [ 4520.364079] usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4520.588109] usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4520.804140] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 7 using uhci_hcd [ 4520.924136] usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4521.148083] usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4521.364105] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 8 using uhci_hcd [ 4521.776237] usb 7-1: device not accepting address 8, error -71 [ 4521.888206] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 9 using uhci_hcd [ 4522.296102] usb 7-1: device not accepting address 9, error -71 [ 4522.296150] hub 7-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 4749.036104] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 10 using uhci_hcd [ 4749.156209] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4749.380215] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4749.596206] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 11 using uhci_hcd [ 4749.716409] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4749.940110] usb 7-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 4750.156257] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 12 using uhci_hcd [ 4750.572150] usb 7-2: device not accepting address 12, error -71 [ 4750.684215] usb 7-2: new full-speed USB device number 13 using uhci_hcd [ 4751.100182] usb 7-2: device not accepting address 13, error -71 [ 4751.100224] hub 7-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2 Here is my system: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 005 Device 002: ID 08ff:2810 AuthenTec, Inc. • USB mouse does not work on boot

    - by Uku Loskit
My problem is pretty much a duplicate of the one described in USB mouse late to load , but the solution there has not worked for me. I'm running the same OS and experiencing the exact same issue. It disappears after 10 seconds or so. Booting with the options specified in the other question did not fix it :/ Thanks in advance. sheepz@sheepz-desktop:~$ dmesg | egrep "hci|usb" [ 0.188000] usbcore: registered new interface driver • Getting USB Wifi device to work

    - by Lolwhites
I have been trying to get an Olitec Wifi N USB dongle to work. At first it lit up but wouldn't connect. A little Googling suggested that it would need ndiswrapper to make it work. After installing and trying to add driver with ndisgtk, I got the error message FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found., but the driver appears in the list of currently installed ones anyway. However, the situation appears even worse: The USB device doesn't even light up (which it does when plugged into my netbook), suggesting the thing isn't detected any more. How to I go about resolving this issue? I've tried uninstalling ndiswrapper but there seems to have been some permanent change as the device is still not lighting up, as it did at first. • Self-powered USB hub and power supply adapter ampere capacity

    - by galacticninja
I am looking for a power supply adapter for my USB Hub so it can support at least 2 bus-powered external hard drives. The hub's rating is 5 volts, 2 amperes. I would like to know if it would be OK to buy a power supply adapter rated at less than 2A. I've been looking for power supply adapters and the ones that do support 2A are more expensive (more expensive than the USB hub itself) compared to those that support less than 2A. Will power supply adapter that supports less than 2A (~1-1.5A) work fine to support two external hard drives? The external hard drives are both bus-powered Western Digital My Passport Essentials 250 GB. The OS is Windows XP SP3.

  • USB 3.0 port with USB 3.0 device in Ubuntu 12.10

    - by fernando garcía
When I try to connect a USB 3.0 device in Ubuntu 12.10 (ASUS K55VD, kernel 3.5.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP), the system says [ 74.747832] hub 3-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 74.931957] usb 4-1: new SuperSpeed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd [ 74.949390] usb 4-1: New USB device found, idVendor=05e3, idProduct=0731 [ 74.949396] usb 4-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=1, SerialNumber=2 [ 74.949400] usb 4-1: Product: USB Storage [ 74.949403] usb 4-1: SerialNumber: 0000000000000033 [ 75.033327] usbcore: registered new interface driver uas [ 75.038548] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... I have checked other questions, but either they have no answers or they told about previous Ubuntu version with 3.0.x kernels. A USB 2.0 device will work in the USB 3.0 ports. A USB 3.0 device will work (at USB 2.0 speeds) in the USB 2.0 ports. The problem, as I wrote, is between USB 3.0 devices and USB 3.0 ports. I have my USB 3.0 ports configured without legacy support via the BIOS (the way they should be, I suppose). But I also have tried to configure them with XHCI Preboot mode disabled. Have any one solved a similar problem? Thanks in advance.

  • Unable to view USB stick/drive contents

    - by Harshit Sachdeva
So, I plug-in my USB stick, copy a file from the hard drive to the USB stick, and safely remove the USB stick. I then plug out the USB stick. When I plug the USB stick back into the computer again, the previous contents of the USB stick are all gone. It shows an empty drive. I am using Windows XP SP 2 with an 8 GB USB stick from Transcend.

  • Force usb to use same device id, instead of new one

    - by m s kumar
I am having some trouble in automating the task. I am testing some android based mobiles in linux machine. The automation script uses the device id under "/dev/bus/usb/001/"053" it will be always under bus 001 only.. But the dev is will be random like if i insert one mobile then the dev id will be 053, if remove and insert it again then the dev id will be 054.. The problem is, when some tests runs on the device and if device gets rebooted then new dev id is showing for the rebooted one and my scripts failing due to new dev id.. Is there any way to force usb devices to use same dev id instead of new one. So that there will be no issues to my tests even after device reboots. Thanks in advance.

A number of unanswered threads with people with similar error messages and problems only. Hopefully someone here can help or point me in the right direction?!

  • External USB drive is failing

    - by dma_k
I have an external USB 2.0 drive WD My Book Mirror Edition, running in RAID 1 (mirroring) mode. A while ago the hard drive started to fail: it stops responding (directories are not listed returning an error after a big timeout). Sometimes it works for weeks before a failure, sometimes – few hours. Small write operations (like removing few files or editing a small file) do not harm, but when copying large files to the drive over the network, or creating the archive locally, the kernel dumps. Also interesting to note that once kernel has failed, Linux does not want to reboot normally (reboot hangs); when Linux box is shutdown with power button, WD drive does not go to sleep mode (as it usually does): leds continue to run, pressing and holding the "shutdown" button on drive's back panel does not do anything; only unplugging the power cord helps. Here goes the boot log: Aug 16 00:32:21 kernel: [ 1.514106] ehci_hcd: USB 2.0 'Enhanced' Host Controller (EHCI) Driver Aug 16 00:32:21 kernel: [ 1.657738] ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: PCI INT A -> GSI 23 I have browsed and read similar error reports here and there and I tried: I have upgraded the kernel from v2.6.26-2 to 2.6.32-5, which has not solved the problem. They say, this might a cable problem. I have tried to replace the USB-to-miniUSB cable (that connects external drive with computer) with another one. No changes. Somebody suggests to try another USB port. I have only 4 external USB ports, tried another one with no success. They say to try uhci_hcd. I have unmounted the device, unloaded ehci_hcd and mounted again. The difference was that now in log I get reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 and similar kernel dumps after a while. They say to echo 128 > /sys/block/sdb/device/max_sectors. I tried it with ehci_hcd with no success (note: I have issued this command after the drive was mounted but before using it actively). I have lauched smartmond and checking periodically the output of smartctl: drive temperature is OK, number of bad sectors and uncorrectable errors is 0. Nothing suspicious is reported by S.M.A.R.T. except maybe the following: Aug 16 12:40:12 kernel: [43715.314566] program smartctl is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO Aug 16 12:40:13 kernel: [43715.705622] program smartctl is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO Of course, I have not tried all combinations of above. But unfortunately, I am run out of cardinal ideas. If anybody can advice something specific about the problem, you are very welcome.

  • front usb wont mount harddrives, internal usb ports do

    - by Thesgsuser
I have noticed something in my new build, i am using Ubuntu desktop newest version my motherboard is the asus f1a75-m pro R2.0 with the usb ports in the back all my NTFS hard disks or usb sticks work fine, but then.. when i put them in the front usb ports of my chassis (silverstone milo ml-03) they wont mount... I have 2 usb 3.0 ports in front of the case connected with a internal usb 3.0 header. But i verified that the usb 3.0 ports on the back do mount the harddisk so it has nothing to do with usb 3.0 i think. The strange thing is, my mouse works fine on the front usb ports. Every usb hardware piece seems to work except if it has any memory inside it :( What seems to be the problem?

Method: enter the directory: /usr/local/bin/ztemtApp/zteusbserial, and find the corresponding kernel version of current system. Readme file says, we have to do this to insert ztemt.ko in kernel.

  • External USB attached drive works in Windows XP but not in Windows 7. How to fix?

    - by irrational John
Earlier this week I purchased this "N52300 EZQuest Pro" external hard drive enclosure from here. I can connect the enclosure using USB 2.0 and access the files in both NTFS partitions on the MBR partitioned drive when I use either Windows XP (SP3) or Mac OS X 10.6. So it works as expected in XP & Snow Leopard. However, the enclosure does not work in Windows 7 (Home Premium) either 64-bit or 32-bit or in Ubuntu 10.04 (kernel 2.6.32-23-generic). I'm thinking this must be a Windows 7 driver problem because the enclosure works in XP & Snow Leopard. I do know that no special drivers are required to use this enclosure. It is supported using the USB mass storage drivers included with XP and OS X. It should also work fine using the mass storage support in Windows 7, no? FWIW, I have also tried using 32-bit Windows 7 on both my desktop, a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 with a Pentium Dual-Core E6500 @ 2.93GHz, and on my early 2008 MacBook. I see the same failure in both cases that I see with 64-bit Windows 7. So it doesn't appear to be specific to one hardware platform. I'm hoping someone out there can help me either get the enclosure to work in Windows 7 or convince me that the enclosure hardware is bad and should be RMAed. At the moment though an RMA seems pointless since this appears to be a (Windows 7) device driver problem. I have tried to track down any updates to the mass storage drivers included with Windows 7 but have so far come up empty. Heck, I can't even figure out how to place a bug report with Microsoft since apparently the grace period for Windows 7 email support is only a few months. I came across a link to some USB troubleshooting steps in another question. I haven't had a chance to look over the suggestions on that site or try them yet. Maybe tomorrow if I have time ... ;-) I'll finish up with some more details about the problem. When I connect the enclosure using USB to Windows 7 at first it appears everything worked. Windows detects the drive and installs a driver for it. Looking in Device Manager there is an entry under the Hard Drives section with the title, Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 USB Device. When you open Windows Disk Management the first time after the enclosure has been attached the drive appears as "Not initialize" and I'm prompted to initialize it. This is bogus. After all, the drive worked fine in XP so I know it has already been initialized, partitioned, and formatted. So of course I never try to initialize it "again". (It's a 1 GB drive and I don't want to lose the data on it). Except for this first time, the drive never shows up in Disk Management again unless I uninstall the Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 USB Device entry under Hard Drives, unplug, and then replug the enclosure. If I do that then the process in the previous paragraph repeats. In Ubuntu the enclosure never shows up at all at the file system level. Below are an excerpt from kern.log and an excerpt from the result of lsusb -v after attaching the enclosure. It appears that Ubuntu at first recongnizes the enclosure and is attempting to attach it, but encounters errors which prevent it from doing so. Unfortunately, I don't know whether any of this info is useful or not. excerpt from kern.log [ 2684.240015] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22 [ 2684.393618] usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 2684.395399] scsi17 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices [ 2684.395570] usb-storage: device found at 22 [ 2684.395572] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [ 2689.390412] usb-storage: device scan complete [ 2689.390894] scsi 17:0:0:0: Direct-Access Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 ST6O PQ: 0 ANSI: 4 [ 2689.392237] sd 17:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg7 type 0 [ 2689.395269] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] 1953525168 512-byte logical blocks: (1.00 TB/931 GiB) [ 2689.395632] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] Write Protect is off [ 2689.395636] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] Mode Sense: 11 00 00 00 [ 2689.395639] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 2689.412003] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 2689.412009] sde: sde1 sde2 [ 2689.455759] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 2689.455765] sd 17:0:0:0: [sde] Attached SCSI disk [ 2692.620017] usb 1-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22 [ 2707.740014] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [ 2722.970103] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [ 2723.200027] usb 1-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22 [ 2738.320019] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [ 2753.550024] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [ 2753.780020] usb 1-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22 [ 2758.810147] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/8, error -110 [ 2763.940142] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/8, error -110 [ 2764.170014] usb 1-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 22 [ 2769.200141] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/8, error -110 [ 2774.330137] usb 1-2: device descriptor read/8, error -110 [ 2774.440069] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 22 [ 2774.440503] sd 17:0:0:0: Device offlined - Today I recieved a 1394b 9 pin to 1394a 6 pin cable which allowed me to connect the "EZQuest Pro" via Firewire. Everything works. When I use Firewire I can connect whether I'm using Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.04. I even tried booting my Gigabyte desktop as an OS X 10.6.3 Hackintosh and it worked there as well. (Though if I recall correctly, it also worked when using USB 2.0 and booting OS X on the desktop. Certainly it works with USB 2.0 and my MacBook.) I believe the firmware on the device is at the latest level available, v1.07. I base this on the excerpt below from the OS X System Profiler which shows Firmware Revision: 0x107. Bottom line: It's nice that the enclosure is actually usable when I connect with Firewire. But I am still searching for an answer as to why it does not work correctly when using USB 2.0 in Windows 7 (and Ubuntu ... but really Windows 7 is my biggest concern).
