Lock screen keeps making sound when screen is off

I have my laptop (Asus UL20FT) on external power and hooked up to an external monitor. I keep the laptop lid closed and am using the 'second screen only' option. If you leave it on the lock screen for a short period of time the screen powers off. While the screen is off it keeps repeating a "duuuh duh duh" sound (sounds just like the device plugged in sound).

The monitor is connected via HDMI and I have Microsoft and Logitech wireless USB dongles plugged in.

How can I prevent this sound loop?
