update manager - insufficient storage space (false alarm)

I'm trying to run Update Manager but it keeps reporting that there's not enough space.

Here's the screenshot: enter image description here I ran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade from the terminal but still update manager says that there are updates and I cannot seem to get pass this message.

I have even removed many programs from my system and there is supposed to be at least 6GB of disk space free. enter image description here What can I do?
