• Listening UDP or switch to TCP in a MFC application

  I'm editing a legacy MFC application, and I have to add some basic network functionalities. The operating side has to receive a simple instruction (numbers 1,2,3,4...) and do something based on that. The clients wants the latency to be as fast as possible, so naturally I decided to use datagrams (UDP). But reading all sorts of resources left me bugged. I cannot listen to UDP sockets (CAsyncSocket) in MFC, it's only possible to call Receive which blocks and waits. Blocking the UI isn't really a smart. So I guess I could use some threading technique, but since I'm not all that experienced with MFC how should that be implemented? The other part of the question is should I do this, or revert to TCP, considering reliability and implementation issues. I know that UDP is unreliable, but just how unreliable is it really? • jqplot format tooltip values

  I want to have a tooltip hover highlight thingy in jqplot. The problem is that I want it to give more detail then on the axes. So the formatter should be different. I can't get it to display the seconds to: There's a JS fidle here! I want the timestamp to display as hours:minutes:seconds, which would be format string '%H:%M:%S' or '%T' or '%X'. • Dynamic procmail filters

  i need procmail to place incoming mail into specific folder depending on some set of rules. I know how i can accomplish this, but i need to write static set of rules in a specific file. What i really need is to configure procmail to use rules stored in mysql database. How i can do this? I've read a bit about that and one solution i found is to pipe message to a php/perl script and return a folder name to place message. But i have completely no i idea how to use php script as a rule and then use its return value.

• Lot of FIN_WAIT2, CLOSE_WAIT , LAST_ACK and TIME_WAIT in Haproxy

  We are running haproxy in production for around 10k+ concurrent users . But we are seeing lot of FIN_WAIT2, CLOSE_WAIT , LAST_ACK and TIME_WAIT in the netstat output. This output is on a 8G ubuntu-12.04 node. 8046 CLOSE_WAIT 1 CLOSING 1 established) 40869 ESTABLISHED 1212 FIN_WAIT1 7575 FIN_WAIT2 1 Foreign 2252 LAST_ACK 7 LISTEN 143 SYN_RECV 4920 TIME_WAIT Can someone please tell me what tweaking i need to do. Please note that all these connections are persistent connections . tcp_fin_timeout = 30 tcp_keepalive_time = 1800 Right now, the application is working fine. But wondering will be there any issues as we add more users to this haproxy node.

• Allowing connections initiated from outside

  I've got an old Juniper SSG5 running ScreenOS 5.4.0r6.0. Once a day, more or less, it'll start randomly dropping packets at a rate of ~5-10%. We currently solve this issue by simply rebooting the unit, after which it resumes working in perfect condition. As this error has started appearing randomly, without any configuration or hardware changes, I'm assuming I've got an aging unit about to fail. As such, I've got a replacement SSG5 running ScreenOS 6.0. I've dumped the config on the 5.4 and imported it into a clean 6.0, and it seems to gladly accept it, and all my configuration seems to be A-OK. However, upon connecting the new unit, all outside-initiated connections seem to be blocked. If I browse our external IP from the inside, everything works perfectly, and it's not just port 80, SSH, Crashplan - all of our policies route correctly. All normal networking, initiated from the inside, work perfectly as well. If on the other hand I browse our external IP from the outside, everything is blocked. Barring differences between ScreenOS 5.4 and 6.0, the config is identical. • Delete data from a SQL Server database on a full partition

  I have a SQL Server 2005 Database on a dedicated partition, during the time the database grown and now it have occupied all the space on the partition, now the problem is that the only operation I can do on the database is detach, but i want to remove old data from some tables to save space ... How can I remove old data from the database if SQL Server interface doesn't allow to run queries on it ?

• Why such a dramatic difference in wireless router max. simultaneous connections?

  Recently, I've needed to look into buying a wireless router for a mission-critical system at work that will need to support quite a few simultaneous connections (potentially a few hundred laptops). One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a dramatic difference between the max. simultaneous connections different routers can support; see this page for example - anything from 32 to 35,000! Why is there this degree of difference? You'd have thought that if we know how to make routers that can handle thousands of connections, we wouldn't be making stuff that's limited to a pathetic 32 anymore. Is it a firmware thing? A hardware thing? Are low-end manufacturers purposely putting low arbitrary connection limits in so people can be "encouraged" to pay more for high-end routers?

• Uninstallation of WSUS form SBS 2008

  I am not much experienced system admin, but i came across the client who was having SBS 2008. The server was running out of HDD space. So to recover some, I removed its WSUS role (twas not needed).this removed WSUS 3.0 SP1 & freed a lot of space. This SBS is: Domian controller, DNS, DHCP, File server. After i removed WSUS i disabled windows update service & i rebooted serer & checked from one of client if the shared folders are accessible. they were. Next day all of sudden i got call from them saying they can't login into their domain. I looked into server, the Active directory service was stopped. I never remember touching any service other than windows update. How come AD service stopped running all of sudden. Is removing WSUS have such impact? I am not aware of any such thing.

• IIS High use & Server Performance issues

  Have an SBS2011 running Exchange, a database app and a few other things serving 5 users (3 low use, 1 high). The server was never specced for the database app so it isn't as powerful as I'd like... Only 12GB RAM. We have increasingly found performance problems with this server, last week it was so bad I couldn't even connect remotely. To free up some available RAM I have (over the past month or so): Restricted the Exchange Message Store to 1GB with (so far) no ill effects. Restricted SQL Databases (including SBSMonitoring and Sharepoint/##SSEE (Which isn't used)). Now I am finding that IIS Worker threads are using up the available memory and I have (so far) been unable to track down much useful information about restricting them. This server is not 'serving' anything web-based apart from OWA that I am finding people using because Outlook is so slow (again related to the Servers performance). I am aware that Exchange on SBS2011 is designed to use up available resources (and concede when other applications request). But it is not doing so (or anywhere near fast enough) for our needs. Opening the database application (using Postgres) takes 5+ minutes from client machines and regularly times out or crashes due to this. After a reboot (before SQL/Exchange/IIS databases are very large/totally cached) we get the performace we need and expect. Previously a reboot once a month was enough... Then once a week... Now they have taken to rebooting it almost daily!

  If I try to query a root server with dig, I never receive an answer. I've ended up with this configuration in /etc/bind/named.conf.local zone "example.com" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.example.com"; allow-transfer { 192.168.1.1; }; }; zone "1.168.192.in-addr.arpa" { type master; notify no; file "/etc/bind/db.192"; allow-transfer { 192.168.1.1; }; }; forwarders { 10.253.22.140; 10.253.22.141; }; I've read about the different type of dns server, like primary master etc. The first two parts (zone and zone) corresponds to primary dns server configuration. First record for "classic" lookup, second one for reverse. The last part (forwarders) is configuration of cache-server and contains the ISP's IP of DNS server. So all names resolved thanks to this server will be cached. Simple question: am I right? Does my description make sense? Or one server can be only either master or either cached?

• HAPROXY per domain redirection

  I'm trying to redirect requests to my load balancer by domain name with acl and hdr_dom, to a separate backend. The redirection works ok with the first request - 'GET /' (the destination server is a WordPress site) but when the client asks for the assets ('GET /blablabla/style.css' for example) the haproxy doesn't redirect it to the right backend anymore, but to the default one, with . In the haproxy log I can see the correct host that the request is for (the one that I defined in hdr_dom) but it's like that since the GET request itself is relative (I mean not containing the domain but only from the /blablabla and forth), haproxy doesn't recognize it with the hdr_dom. I'm just guessing here.. Please help...

• What permission(s) does an application pool identity required to manage other application pools?

  I have a web site (used to manage various parts of our software) that needs the permissions required to start/stop other application pools. I've created a user and set the app pool identity to custom, however the web app still can't start/stop the app pools. I get the following Error: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Filename: redirection.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Interop.AppHostWritableAdminManager.GetAdminSection(String bstrSectionName, String bstrSectionPath) at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Configuration.GetSectionInternal(ConfigurationSection section, String sectionPath, String locationPath) at Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager.get_ApplicationPoolsSection() at Microsoft.Web.Administration.ServerManager.get_ApplicationPools() Discussion here suggests setting the application pool to local system or administrator, this does work, but I don't want to do this for security reasons (external support will need access this site). I did give the user higher permissions (as suggested here), starting by making it part of the local administrators group, but initially this didn't work, and giving the user read/write/mod permission on C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config also didn't work. I must have done something wrong as local administrator now works, however this still isn't what I want. So can anyone suggest the permissions I need to add to this user, and how can I apply them? An answer my problem (but different question) is here, but to clarify, I think I need to give an individual user "IIS Runtime Operation Permissions", does anyone know how to do this, if indeed this is the permissions I require?

• Warning in Apache log: Cannot get media type from 'x-mapp-php5'

  I have no idea what is causing this issue, but it seems to be related to the displayed file (just a simple index.php to print phpinfo) being in an aliased directory. Any suggestions what I can do to avoid the warning? Here's an excerpt from my httpd.conf: <Directory "<dir with broken php>"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Alias /smartersoftware/ "<broken dir>" <FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php </FilesMatch> The last three lines were required to make php work at all (which I found a bit strange, and it may or may not be related to my problem). Adding a AddType application/x-mapp-php5 .php didn't change anything.

• Can't run utilities/.exe's that use the network from a [DFS] windows share on Windows 2008 servers. Can this be overcome?

  Under Windows Server 2008 I'm unable to run many utilities that use network resources. This works just fine under Windows Server 2003. For example: \\domain\dfs\tools$\bin\sendmail.exe ... \\domain\dfs\tools$\bin\psexec.exe ... echo %_metric% %_value% %_unixtime% | \\domain\dfs\bin\foo$\nc graphite.domain 2003 -w1 Reproducing and maintaining this folder on a large number of servers/vm's is not desirable. Is there a way to allow Windows Server 2008 to run these tools? If so, can this be enabled via GPO or in a fashion that can be scripted during automated builds? Edit: The commands/tools do work just fine, when run from local drives. Edit3: The problem seems to be tied to DFS/DFS shares. Tools run correctly from other normal windows-server file-shares. They also run correctly when run directly from the file-servers behind the DFS. They only fail when we attempt to run them from the DFS UNC path or mapped drives.

• Links not opening in Windows 8 applications

  I have just upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 Ultimate with IE9 to Windows 8 with IE 10. When ever I try to open a web link in an application nothing happens. For example in the Windows 8 mail application it makes the email address in an email look like a link. When I click on these with the mouse the link changes to look like I have clicked on it, but aside from that nothing happens. I have tried making sure that IE 10 is my default web browser and been into IE10's settings and associated it with all the usual file types, but still no success. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this? I have a feeling this started when the Browser Choice update ran. I couldn't select which browser to install in that either. The install buttons just flashed when I clicked them and then nothing. PS I would have added an IE10 tag to this post, but apparently I don't have the reputation required to do so.

• Dell monitors keep blank after initial start

  We have Dell T1650 PCs with 2 nVidia graphic adapters / Windows 7 and 4 attached monitors. At initial start all screens are blank, the computer does not show anything. If powered off by pressing the hardware power button and then restarting all monitors show a picture. The Windows event log shows only the errors, that the machine was shut down unexpectedly. The last entry with blank screen seems to be that user specific dlls for every application are loaded. How can I find out the real problem?

  I have installed Windows XP Virtual PC on Windows 7 to test a site that is having issues in IE7 on windows xp - the website loads up but you cannot click on hyperlinks - its like the website has frozen - now is this a browser support issue or OS issue? Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any browser tools i can use to spot any problems? Sorry if i have been too vague - not much else to say really - completely lost.. Maybe this might help a little; Any guidance is appreciated UPDATE: I think i know what the problem maybe - its the jQuery UI reference that is causing issues with the site.
