  Ran into some questionable behavior using lists of parameterized Class objects: ArrayList<Class<String>> classList = new ArrayList<Class<String>>(); classList.add(Integer.class); //compile error Class intClass = Integer.class; classList.add(intClass); //legal apparently, as long as intClass is not parameterized Found the same behavior for LinkedList, haven't tried other collections. Is it like this for a reason? Or have I stumbled on something?

• AS3 ExternalInterface works in IE but not Firefox

  Hi all, I am trying to execute an AS3 function from my javascript using the ExternalInterface. Seems to work fine in IE, but firefox is always returning javascript error method undefined. I have been Googling this for ages and eliminated the following possibilities: 1) Some people say you need to have an embed tag inside your object tag, so added one - no luck. 2) Many people say that you need to make sure that your flash is loaded before calling the javascript. Well my call is after pressing a link on the page. I am always using the flash application first and only pressing the link at the end. 3) Then I thought that maybe it is a security problem so added the following: try { ExternalInterface.addCallback("test", testing); trace("added callback"); } catch (error:SecurityError) { trace("Security Error:"+error.message); } catch (error:Error) { trace("Error:"+error.message); } But it prints out "added callback" :( Anyone else have any ideas what else could I possible try? • how to avoid jQuery UI draggable from also triggering click event

  A have a large div (a map) that is draggable via jQuery UI draggable. The div has child divs which are clickable. My problem is that if you drag the map, on mouse up, the click event is fired on whatever child div you started the drag from. How do I stop the mouse up from triggering the click event if its part of a drag (as opposed to someone just clicking without a drag, in which case the click event is desired).

• Microsoft Server 2003 Explorer shows duplicate local shares

  Hi folks, I am new here and I could really use some advice please. I am having a problem with our file server. When I try to browse the shared folders using explorer, several of the shared folders all appear to have the same name. Whenever I attempt to rename one of the affected folders, all the affected folders name also change. Our File Server is Windows Server 2003 R2. I am logged on directly to the server using remote desktop. When I open the folder all is as it should be, the proper content is there and the address bar displays the correct folder name and path. The share names are correct, so everything that needs to access the shared folder/files can do so. Also when I browse to the folder using the command-line all it as it should be there too. The only issue seems to be the incorrect display name when browsing using explorer. Can anyone offer any advice or help as to how to resolve this issue please? It would be most appreciated. Thanks

• Will a hosting company work with a site that'll (eventually and ideally) have many frequent visitors

  I have a website I'd like to develop that might eventually get fairly large (in terms of what's stored and how many people visit). My question is, will staying with a hosting company (namely, FatCow) be a complete disaster? Or is there an alternative? I know very little about this aspect of web dev, so it would be great if any technology I need to learn was mentioned with some detail. Thank you very much.

• How do I determine what Excel-2007 is removing when it repairs my file?

  Summary: Excel repairs my file, tells me what was removed, I go into the xml/zip structure to investigate, and I cannot figure out what was changed. Does anybody know what I can do to better understand what Excel changed? Is it futile to try to determine? It feels like this should be possible and like I'm almost there... Details: When I open a file that I have renamed unnamed.xlsm, I receive the following notice: "Excel found unreadable content in 'unnamed.xlsm'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the sounce of this workbook, click Yes." I know the file is safe, I click yes, and I receive a message that "Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content." It provides the following summary, but also provides an xml file which seems to contain the same content so I did not show it. Summary: Removed Records: Shared formula from /xl/worksheets/sheet3.xml part Removed Records: Formula from /xl/calcChain.xml part (Calculation properties) In order to determine issue, I have created a copy of the offending file, renamed it to have a '.zip' ending, opened up the files that Excel says it modified (sheet3), and perused the xml content, but this was not informative. I tried saving the repaired file and doing a simple diff on the xml for sheet3, but there are many changes and this is not informative either. I did the same thing for calcChain.xml and this was more useful. After saving the displayed xml with line breaks in text format, it was easy to identify the items that have been removed, but now I want to make sense of them. Perhaps they give clues of what happened to shee3. The following comparison is long, but I don't know if the entire train of differences is relevant. • Outlook Signature Broken in Entourage

  Some of our company uses Windows with Outlook 2010, and the rest use Mac with Entourage. When our standard signature line is included in an email that goes to Entourage, the result does not display correctly. It appears that Entourage is mangling the HTML. My working theory is that Entourage encounters inline CSS styles it does not know about and stops processing styles, but I'm really not sure. Question: How can I enter a signature into Outlook 2010 that will render correctly in Entourage? For example, can I specify somehow the exact HTML to use? Here's an example of how the HTML is being changed. • How do you sync photos with your family?

  We've always been trying to share photos within our family, despite all living in different countries. This has been very challenging. We have about 50GB of photos that we share with each other. Everyone organizes them differently, so rsync/Syncplicity don't work. Everyone likes their photos on the fast hard drive rather than a slow website with reduced quality, so online sharing websites are a no-go. So far we have been essentially syncing them manually, via a shared folder that new photos are placed to and collected from. This is laborious and prone to errors, that usually leave one of us without all the photos without even knowing. To those who are in a similar situation, how do you solve this?

• Background process and SIGHUP

  My understanding is that a program that is associated with a terminal will receive the SIGHUP signal if that terminal is closed. This usually will terminate the program. I also know that you can use the nohup command along with the & symbol to run the program in the background, and disassociate it from the terminal so that the program is not terminated when the terminal closes (on log out.) However, suppose a program is run normally without nohup, but is then suspended using Cntl-Z. If the program is then resumed in the background using the bg command, will it receive the SIGHUP signal on log out? Or to put it another way: if I have a program which is already running, and I don't want to stop it but I'd like to log out, can I suspend it using Cntl-Z and run it in the background using bg? Or will the program be terminated when I log out?

• Outlook 2010 on WinXP runs once then refuses to run again until reboot

  Since I installed Outlook 2010 on a new machine (WinXP Pro SP3) a couple months back I have had an issue that is quite annoying: If I close Outlook then attempt to restart it I get a small pop-up saying only: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook". I found one workaround, but not a terribly practical one: reboot. If I reboot then launch Outlook, it opens fine. Here is what I know: Since I can run Outlook just fine after a reboot, I do not see that a system restore, an OS reinstall, or the like would help. I tried "outlook.exe /resetnavpane" and "outlook.exe /safe" but those give the same error. There are no entries in the event log. There is no instance of Outlook appearing in the process list once I close the program, so it does not seem to be an alias for "outlook is already running". As far as I have found, my situation is unique among reports of similar incidents: I have uncovered no other reports saying Outlook would run fine the first launch or that a reboot would again allow it to run. Suggestions?

• Cinema4D for game development tutorials anyone ?

  Hi, I started to learn Cinema 4D. I've noticed it's really easy to use for motion graphics, but I want to use it for modeling for games/realtime 3d engines. Before I used 3dsmax and it was easy to estimate how a model would look/behave in a 3d engine. The two main things I did was displaying Polygon triangles and displaying the Polygon Count. I've found the Total Polygons tick in HUD settings in Cinema 4D, but I can't find any display mode that will show triangles. Is there there a way to display triangle faces/not quads in Cinema4D ? If so how ? There is a Triangulate function, but I'd rather not Triangulate/Untriangulate all the time, especially since it's converting back and forth between the two doesn't always produce the same result.

• What's the best way to format an external HDD for both OSX and Windows ?

  I have an external HDD (1TB) and I'd like to use it on OSX and Windows. I had another external HDD using NTFS and I used NTFS-3G on osx to write files, but I found the reading/writing very slow. Googling a bit I see many people recommend HFS+ in conjuction with HFS Explorer for Windows. Is this the best way ? Is it possible to have two partitions, one HFS+ and one NTFS ? Is it a good option or is it better to use one partition ? I've seen this thread on using UDF for USB flash drive. Would that be suited for an USB external HDD ?

• Specify next boot to be into safe mode/WinRE via commandline?

  As the title says.I would like a script that tells windows that the next boot should be into safe mode or atleast that the "F8" menu should be presented next boot.Booting into WinRE(Launch startup repair...) is problably even more un-doable.I looked over bcdedit options but did'nt see anything like this.I know msconfig has an option for safe boot but it's gui only. Currently if i wan't to boot into safe mode or launch WinRE then i have to forcefully restart my pc first for those options to be presented during boot(F8 does not bring up the safe mode option under normal conditions). Im using Windows 7 x64.

• Wordpress domain mapping error but only from my connection

  Recently when trying to access a Wordpress blog from a my network I get this error: Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain. If I request that URL from another connection (ie: remote desktop into another network and try from there), it works perfectly. Anyone got suggestions/ideas on why from my network the site errors, but from others it loads?

• Windows 7 Standy/Hibernate Freeze/Lockup

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a MSI U100 Netbook which often experiences a lockup or freeze whilst hibernating or shutting down. I have a friend with an Asus netbook running Windows 7 who has experienced the same issue. This happens to me perhaps 1-2 times a week, and is frustrating as hell because it will just sit there running flat out (the fan goes to max after a while) until the battery dies if I don't notice it first. Just wondering if anyone has had any similar issues or might be able to point me in the right direction. The freeze occurs when the screen has faded to black. The HDD light flickers for a few moments then just sticks on solid. I haven't been able to isolate any apps which may be causing this either. It will be fine one standby, and lock up the next with no new apps open. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kyle

  I'm looking for peoples opinion on wireless music streaming devices - something like this. I have an iTunes library hosted on an ubuntu server and I'm looking for something to allow me to listen to all the albums stored on it. Ideally, it should provide a good quality playback both over headphones and through speakers so that everyone can hear it. It doesn't need to be ultra-portable - being able to move the system and plug in a mains lead should be enough, so a single, integrated unit is preferable. One product per answer please and if you've used a product, vote it up or down depending on whether it's any good or not. Use comments to highlight good/bad points.

• Working with Reporting Services Filters – Part 3: The TOP and BOTTOM Operators

  Thus far in this series, I have described using the IN operator and the LIKE operator. Today, I’ll continue the series by reviewing the TOP and BOTTOM operators. Today, I happened to be working on an example of using the TOP N operator and was not successful on my first try because the behavior is just a bit different than we find when using an “equals” comparison as I described in my first post in this series. In my example, I wanted to display a list of the top 5 resellers in the United States for AdventureWorks, but I wanted it based on a filter. I started with a hard-coded filter like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [ResellerSalesAmount] Float Top N 5 And received the following error: A filter value in the filter for tablix 'Tablix1' specifies a data type that is not supported by the 'TopN' operator. Verify that the data type for each filter value is Integer. Well, that puzzled me. Did I really have to convert ResellerSalesAmount to an integer to use the Top N operator? Just for kicks, I switched to the Top % operator like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [ResellerSalesAmount] Float Top % 50 This time, I got exactly the results I expected – I had a total of 10 records in my dataset results, so 50% of that should yield 5 rows in my tablix. So thinking about the problem with Top N some  more, I switched the Value to an expression, like this: Expression Data Type Operator Value [ResellerSalesAmount] Float Top N =5 And it worked! So the value for Top N or Top % must reflect a number to plug into the calculation, such as Top 5 or Top 50%, and the expression is the basis for determining what’s in that group. In other words, Reporting Services will sort the rows by the expression – ResellerSalesAmount in this case – in descending order, and then filter out everything except the topmost rows based on the operator you specify. The curious thing is that, if you’re going to hard-code the value, you must enter the value for Top N with an equal sign in front of the integer, but you can omit the equal sign when entering a hard-coded value for Top %. This experience is why working with Reporting Services filters is not always intuitive! When you use a report parameter to set the value, you won’t have this problem. Just be sure that the data type of the report parameter is set to Integer. Jessica Moss has an example of using a Top N filter in a tablix which you can view here. Working with Bottom N and Bottom % works similarly. You just provide a number for N or for the percentage and Reporting Services works from the bottom up to determine which rows are kept and which are excluded.

  Originally asked on One Hundred Paper Cuts Answers thread On the official site: http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download The instructions for creating a bootable USB key for installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix include a line saying: "Insert a USB stick with at least 2GB of free space" I recently installed UNR on a netbook -- in fact, the one I'm using right now -- and I went ahead despite only having a 1GB USB key on hand. Everything went smoothly and installed 100% correctly. If I had waited to go out and buy a 2GB USB key I would have spent that money unnecessarily and wouldn't have been able to use the computer in the meantime. I was wondering if there's a specific rationale for requiring a 2GB USB key, or if the instructions could be changed to indicate that it can be done with only 1GB. Thanks!
