• AS2 Server Software Costs

  We're currently using Cleo LexiCom as our server software for receiving EDI transmissions via the AS2 protocol. We have 7 trading partners per year, and this runs us about $800/year for support from Cleo. We need to expand from 7 trading partners to 10 or so, and Cleo charges roughly $600 per new host, plus an expanded yearly support fee. My question(s) are: Does anyone know of a cheaper developer of AS2 server software, and perhaps one that doesn't charge per new host? Does anyone have any clue why we are being charged an upfront fee for new hosts, and if this is a standard practice for AS2 software providers? It seems really odd that we are required to pay upfront costs for this. I could completely understand an increase in the yearly support, however.

• Access a windows dynamic hard drive through a virtual machine on ubuntu?

  I have a Windows 7 OS and am thinking about transitioning to a dual boot set up with Ubuntu 12.04. From what I recall, it is not possible to natively access Dynamic Windows Partitions in a Linux OS. My thought is that it might be possible to have a virtual machine (running windows) installed within Ubuntu access the physical dynamic drive. The problem comes to whether VMWare can access the physical disk "high enough" to be able to mount it within the windows virtual machine as a native device or if it gets passed through from the native Linux OS. This is really the only thing holding me back from switching to a dual-boot set up as the dynamic disk is made up of 4 or 5 hard drives and I would very much like access to the data on both OS's. Alternatively, is there another solution for combining multiple physical hard drives into one virtual hard drive that would be readable on both OS's?

• MPD - Streaming Internet Radio

  I use mpd on 3 Ubuntu servers at home. Apparently, if you take a .pls file and convert it to a .m3u file, you can stream it as long as you put is in the designated mpd playlist directory. In my case, the path to that directory is /var/lib/mpd/playlists. When I move the converted file to this directly, even though the mpd client recognizes the saved .m3u file, it won't play it. Does anyone have experience with this function of mpd?

• How can I force Xbox Music to find music in all subfolders of my Music library?

  My music library is organized (roughly) like this: Music mp3 (original) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Tom) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Dick) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Harry) Artist/Album/Song ... etc. When I use the desktop Zune Software, it finds all of this music. However, the Xbox Music metro app only seems to find music in the "mp3 (original)" folder. How can I force it to find all of my music?

• Searching Excel sheet for errors

  Imagine a huge worksheet with tens of thousands of formulas. I want to be able to quickly find all the errors to correct them. I have found that using the normal search procedure I can type in things like #DIV/0! or #NAME? and it will find them, but I would have to type in all the various types of errors separately and that is somewhat time consuming. Is there a way to simply search for any error? One solution we seem to use at work is to put most formulas inside =if(iserror()) or now =iferror() and to just have it output "error" if it is an error. Is this necessary? Or, is there a way to find all the errors without it?

• Interactive console based CSV editor

  Although spreadsheet applications for editing CSV files on the console used to be one of the earliest killer applications for personal computers, only few of them and even less documentation about them is still actively maintained. After having done extensive search on the web, manpages and source code, I ended up with the following three applications that all have fundamental drawbacks: sc: abbrev. for spreadsheet calculator; nice tool with vi keybings, but it does not put strings containing the delimiter into quotas when exporting to delimiter separated format and can't import csv files correctly, i.e. all numbers are interpreted as strings GNU oleo: doesn't seem to be actively maintained any longer since 2001 and there are therefore no packages for major linux distributions teapot: offers packages for various operating systems, but uses for example counter-intuitive naming for cells (numbers for row and column, i.e. 11 seems to be intended to be row 1, column 1) and superfluous code for FLTK GUI Various Emacs modes also do not quote strings containing the delimiter well or are require much more typing for entering the scaffold of a table. Therefore I would be very grateful for overcoming one of theses drawbacks or any hints towards another console based CSV editor. It actually needn't do any calculations just editing cells or column- and rowise.

• openSSL tutorial not fully working - Can sign but cannot restore original file

  I'm writing, and testing, a little tutorial for my groupmates involved in an openSSL homework. We have a bunch of PDF files, I'm the CA and each one should send me a signed PDF for me to be verified. I've told them to do the following (and tried to do it by myself) Request and obtain a certificate (I'll skip this part) Create a MIME message with the PDF file in it makemime -c "text/pdf" -a "Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=”Elaborato.pdf" Elaborato.pdf > Elaborato.pdf.msg Sign with openSSL openssl smime -sign -in Elaborato.pdf.msg -out Elaborato.pdf.p7m -certfile ca.pem -certfile nomegruppo.crt -inkey nomegruppo.key -signer nomegruppo.crt Verify with openssl smime -verify -in Elaborato.pdf.p7m -out Elaborato-verified.msg -CAfile ca.pem -signer nomegruppo.crt Extract attachment with munpack Elaborato-verified.msg View with Acrobat Reader The problem is that even if I get a file that (from its binary content) resembles a PDF file my current Ubuntu PDF viewer doesn't read it. The XXXElaborato.pdf extracted by munpack is a little bit smaller than the original. What's the problem with this procedure? In theory, they should send me the signed S/MIME message and I should be able to read the PDF within it. Why can't I restore the original content of the PDF file?

• Connect Chrome to TOR

  I'm having difficulty connecting Chrome to TOR. I started trying yesterday. I started Vidalia and the TOR Browser and then followed the advice at http://lifehacker.com/5614732/create-a-tor-button-in-chrome-for-on+demand-anonymous-browsing - downloading Proxy Switchy and setting it up as stated. This resulted in Error 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED) (in Chrome, when I tried to load a webpage). So I looked into Vidalia's settings and noticed that it appeared to be using port 9051, so I set that instead of 8118 as everyone on the internet seems to be suggesting. Then I got a new error: Error 111 (net::ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED). Digging a bit, I found that Tor should be set as a SOCKS proxy, not an HTTP proxy, so I unticked "use same settings for all protocols" in Proxy Switchy and just set localhost:9051 for SOCKS. That got me Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT). And that's when I came here for help. I typed up the above question, but then at the last minute decided to do a bit more reading and found someone here suggested using some command line arguments via a Windows shortcut: "C:\snip\chrome.exe" --proxy-server=";socks=127.0.0.1:9051;sock4=127.0.0.1:9051;sock5=127.0.0.1:9051" --incognito check.torproject.org And that worked perfectly. Yesterday. Today it doesn't, so I'm having to post this question after all. check.torproject.org gives me a "no" with Chrome, but a "yes" with the default Tor Browser. I tried closing Chrome and restarting it (yes, with the correct shortcut) after Vidalia started, but still nothing. The port number hasn't changed or anything. What gives? EDIT: I realized I had a "non tor" instance of Chrome running and that possibly the was causing the command line args t be ignored when I started the new instance. Closed all instances of chrome and ran my Chrome Tor shortcut, and it did get rid of the "not using Tor" message -- because I got another Time Out error instead. Vidalia's bandwidth graph didn't even blink.

• How to display escaped characters in tmux status bar

  i am running tmux from a tty on an embedded linux device. (NOT a terminal emulator) because the screen is rather small, i want to add some "icons" to the tmux status bar. to achieve this, i have simply created a font with the appropriate glyphs for things like battery, or wifi. i can load the font, and display the characters with calls that use an escape to the line drawing characters like so: echo -e "\xe\234\xf" \xe escapes me into line drawing character mode, \234 is my created character, and \xf returns me to normal character mode so my terminal doesnt start getting goofy. this works perfectly if i enter the command at the terminal whether tmux is started or not. the issue arises if i then try to use it in my ~/.tmux.conf file for the status bar. i currently have a line like this: set -g status-right "#(echo -e "\xe\234\xf") #(/script/to/output/powerlevel) this simply outputs \xe\234\xf powerlevel this goes the same if i try printf over echo. this is the output i would expect to get on the terminal if i made the call without passing -e to echo, or without enclosing the statement with quotes. i then decided to wrap the calls to the echo or printf in a shell script. again, the script works when called from the terminal, but not in tmux's status bar. now i get the unprintable character "?" instead of my icon, like this: ? powerlevel this is what i would expect if i did not use the line drawing escapes previously mentioned above, or if i tried to copy and paste the character as text using tmux. in addition, the calling of these character scripts screws up the rest of my status-right, as the clock has about 6 digits for minutes when it is called (though it correctly only updates two of them). how can i make tmux respect the escape characters? any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

• Windows 7 Tray Application

  When I launch an application in Windows 7, it shows up in the tray but no where on my main screen. When I hover over it and select the application, nothing shows up. In order to make the application visible, I need to hover over it, right click and select maximize. Anytime I maximize the screen and then select to make it a smaller window, it also disappears. This is an awfully painful process in judst trying to launch the application. Please help me figure out how to change this to make sure th applicationalways opens into a maximized screen.

• Can't boot Windows after installing Linux

  I have a partition /dev/sdb1, where my old Windows XP resides. All the files are there intact and I can see them, mounting the disk from Linux. Linux is on /dev/sdb2. But when I choose Windows in LILO prompt, it doesn't load. I have the following lilo.conf: boot = /dev/sdb # Linux bootable partition config begins image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/sdb2 label = Linux read-only # Partitions should be mounted read-only for checking # Linux bootable partition config ends # Windows bootable partition config begins other = /dev/sdb1 label = Windows table = /dev/sdb # Windows bootable partition config ends What can be wrong?

• When RDP as a Domain User, Smart Card Requested

  My W8 machine is connected to domain zen. If I rdp to the W8 machine, I can log in as a local user without problems. If I try to log in as a domain user, I am prompted for a smart card instead of a password. Any ideas why? Note that Interactive login: require smart card is disabled in group policy: And here is the output from rsop.msc: Some additional information on this one. If my connecting machine is on the same domain/network as the W8 machine, then I am prompted for a password as usual. If the machine is remote, on a different domain, then I am prompted for a smart card. In addition, the machine I am connecting from that gets the smartcard prompt is an XP box. I haven't isolated exactly which of these factors triggers the different response.

• Is it possible to span a desktop background across 2 monitors, with a different background on a third?

  In Windows 8 it's now possible to span a desktop background across multiple monitors, by selecting "span" from the desktop background options. This option spans the image across all of the monitors you have connected. What I'd like to do is span an image across 2 of my 3 monitors, while putting a different background on the third monitor. I figured out how to set a different background for each monitor individually (right-click image, set for monitor n), but can't figure out how to mix and match with spanning. Is there some way to span images across some (but not all) monitors in Windows 8?

  If you try to install the Camera Codec pack for Windows 7 on Windows 8, you get an error: This version of the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack is not compatible with Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. You can get the codec pack through Windows Update on Windows 8. However, I cannot see anywhere on Windows update that would suggest I can download this, even as an optional update? Is it just the case that it is not yet live, as everything filters through the RTM process, or is it hidden away as something else?

• Can't get 1440x900 resolution with GRUB2 although vbeinfo says it's available

  I'm trying to use GRUB2 in graphical mode with 1440x900 resolution, but the result is always garbled nonsense: the highest resolution I can get is 1280x800. Word is from googling that long as vbeinfo lists a resolution, GRUB2 can use it. This doesn't seem to be true: vbeinfo says that 1440x900 is available but it doesn't work. Testing it from the GRUB2 command line: set gxfmode=1440x900 terminal_output gfxterm # -> garbled nonsense # back to trusty 640x480 terminal_output console The graphics card is an Intel GM965. Once linux boots the framebuffer switches to 1440x900. Added after epheminent's reply and various experiments vbeinfo lists two sets of modes. The first set runs from 0x160 to 0x16b, with resolutions 768x480, 960x600, 1280x800 and 1440x900 Then - after a bunch of text-only modes - the second set, containing resolutions 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480 The first set of modes aren't altered by 915resolution. They all work except 1440x900. The resolution of modes in the second set can be altered using the 915resolution module / command available in GRUB2 = 1.99. # in /boot/grub/grub.cfg insmod 915resolution # 30, 32, 34 all work for me: all that varies is which modes are altered 915resolution 30 1440 900 # setting an impossible resolution changes the mode to "text-only" # in my case 1280x1024 is not supported 915resolution 30 1280 1024 Clearly, 1440x900 should just work: adding it with 915resolution is just a workaround.

A simple set of silhouettes can cheaply and quickly transform the front of your house. Courtesy of Matt over at GeekDad, the transformation is easy to pull off. He explains: It’s really just about as simple as you could hope for. The materials needed are: black posterboard or black-painted cardboard; colored cellophane or tissue paper; and tape. The only tools needed are: measuring tape; some sort of drawing implement — chalk works really well; and scissors and/or X-Acto knife. • Clouds, Clouds, Clouds Everywhere, Not a Drop of Rain!

  At the recently concluded Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the center of discussion was clearly Cloud. Over the five action packed days, I got to meet a large number of customers and most of them had serious interest in all things cloud.  Public Cloud - particularly the Oracle Cloud - clearly got a lot of attention and interest. I think the use cases and the value proposition for public cloud is pretty straight forward. However, when it comes to private cloud, there were some interesting revelations.  Well, I shouldn’t really call them revelations since they are pretty consistent with what I have heard from customers at other conferences as well as during 1:1 interactions. While the interest in enterprise private cloud remains to be very high, only a handful of enterprises have truly embarked on a journey to create what the purists would call true private cloud - with capabilities such as self-service and chargeback/show back. For a large majority, today's reality is simply consolidation and virtualization - and they are quite far off from creating an agile, self-service and transparent IT infrastructure which is what the enterprise cloud is all about.  Even a handful of those who have actually implemented a close-to-real enterprise private cloud have taken an infrastructure centric approach and are seeing only limited business upside. Quite a few were frank enough to admit that chargeback and self-service isn’t something that they see an immediate need for.  This is in quite contrast to the picture being painted by all those surveys out there that show a large number of enterprises having already implemented an enterprise private cloud.  On the face of it, this seems quite contrary to the observations outlined above. So what exactly is the reality? Well, the reality is that there is undoubtedly a huge amount of interest among enterprises about transforming their legacy IT environment - which is often seen as too rigid, too fragmented, and ultimately too expensive - to something more agile, transparent and business-focused. At the same time however, there is a great deal of confusion among CIOs and architects about how to get there. This isn't very surprising given all the buzz and hype surrounding cloud computing. Every IT vendor claims to have the most unique solution and there isn't a single IT product out there that does not have a cloud angle to it. Add to this the chatter on the blogosphere, it will get even a sane mind spinning.  Consequently, most  enterprises are still struggling to fully understand the concept and value of enterprise private cloud.  Even among those who have chosen to move forward relatively early, quite a few have made their decisions more based on vendor influence/preferences rather than what their businesses actually need.  Clearly, there is a disconnect between the promise of the enterprise private cloud and the current adoption trends.  So what is the way forward?  I certainly do not claim to have all the answers. But here is a perspective that many cloud practitioners have found useful and thus worth sharing. To take a step back, the fundamental premise of the enterprise private cloud is IT transformation. It is the quest to create a more agile, transparent and efficient IT infrastructure that is driven more by business needs rather than constrained by operational and procedural inefficiencies. It is the new way of delivering and consuming IT services - where the IT organizations operate more like enablers of  strategic services rather than just being the gatekeepers of IT resources. In an enterprise private cloud environment, IT organizations are expected to empower the end users via self-service access/control and provide the business stakeholders a transparent view of how the resources are being used, what’s the cost of delivering a given service, how well are the customers being served, etc.  But the most important thing to note here is the enterprise private cloud is not just an IT project, rather it is a business initiative to create an IT setup that is more aligned with the needs of today's dynamic and highly competitive business environment. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. Just remember how the business users have been at the forefront of public cloud adoption within enterprises and private cloud is no exception.   Such a broad-based transformation makes cloud more than a technology initiative. It requires people (organizational) and process changes as well, and these changes are as critical as is the choice of right tools and technology. In my next blog,  I will share how essential it is for enterprise cloud technology to go hand-in hand with process re-engineering and organization changes to unlock true value of  enterprise cloud.
