• SEO for images: can I use a different (cookieless) domain?

  Hello, We want to increase the value of some of our important images by means of SEO, and we want to start serving them from a different, i.e. cookieless, domain. We want to go from http://www.example.com/images/1234.jpg to http://www.example.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg which can easily be done via URL rewriting. Then on the other hand, we would like to serve the image from a completely different domain, let's say http://www.examplestatic.com/germany/bavaria/landscape.jpg, to save the overhead of sending the cookie from www.example.com. Somehow I feel that this is not a good idea because I move the image away from the content by putting it on a different domain. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Naturally, I would just use a different subdomain, e.g. img.example.com, but we already use subdomains for languages and our cookies are valid for all subdomains of example.com, so this won't help. • AMD Catalyst diskless cluster

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 to set up a diskless compute cluster. When I use the procedure detailed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto, I successfully am able to boot all four nodes. However, once I install Catalyst, I immediately have problems: only one diskless node boots properly, with the other two hanging while attempting to start X. My assumption is that my Catalyst build was somehow specific to the node which I booted from first, which somehow prevents the other nodes from loading Catalyst. Can anyone provide hints to help solve this? Thank you in advance!

• How can I boot into Windows from GRUB rescue WITHOUT CD drive?

  I took this from another website's string where i found no good answer This is my situation: installed Ubuntu without a CD (using A USB) dual boot installation (Windows 7+Ubuntu) didn't like the installation and decided to boot into Windows and delete the Linux partitions forgot to fix the mbr from within Windows Now, when I boot, I am stuck in the GRUB rescue limbo. Simple question: How can I boot into Windows from GRUB rescue? I cannot boot from CD because I don't have a CD drive, therefore the usual solutions (recovery CD etc) do not work. Any hints? Is there a way i can maybe do this through a USB? Thanks

• How can a load and play an .x model using vertex animation in XNA?

  From a game I developed years ago, I still have character models that my former 3D engine designer created and that I'd like to reuse in a Windows Phone project now. However, the files are in DirectX format (.x) containing keyframe animation only. No bones. No skeleton. There are a lot of animation keys defined on several frames to animate the characters. I don't quite understand how that works, to be frankly. However, I did a lot of research regarding a possible way of getting the characters animated via XNA on Windows Phone and all I found are hints that it is generally possible but not supported. Possibly by implementing own Content Importers and Processors. I didn't find anyone who successfully did something like that yet. How should I go about loading and displaying these models in XNA?

• How to handle loading and keeping many bitmaps in an Android 2D game

  In an Android 2D game which is using SurfaceView where its onDraw is driven by a loop from a Thread, I use many bitmap sprites (sprite sheets) and two background size bitmaps, which are all loaded into memory at the start. It all works fine, however, when the activity is onPause or after reloading it few times, Android shows a tendency to wipe out the big bitmaps only, probably to free memory. Sometimes this happens even in the middle of loading this very activity. In order to counter this, I made a check in the onDraw method to test if the big bitmaps are still there and reload them if they are forcefully recycled by Android, before drawing them on Canvas. This solution may not be the most stable, and since I know that there are much more accomplished android game programmers here than myself, I hope you can reveal some tricks or secrets or at least provide some good hints, how to overcome this.

• Keyboard layout issues using Ubuntu 12.04 in ssh via X11 for mac

  I just upgraded from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS on my server (DELL Intel XEON). By SSH login from my mac (OS X Lion) everything is fine (no issues with command lines) but when I open a window through X11, the keyboard layout is now completely messed up. As an owner of a french mac keyboard, I got used to such issues and could deal by guessing the "QUERTY" keys, but this time it's worse. To fix it, I tried: 1/ sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration = no effect 2/ sudo gnome-control-center then change the keyboard settings, however adding a couple of keyboard layouts did not change anything. I feel there is something to do with the X11 forwarding. Any hints? Thanks

• iOS build machine setup: problem with certificates

  some background: work with multiple team mates each work on our own MBP I'm setting a build machine that we can git push to in order to generate a build (aim to allow anyone to push to the build machine and then generate an archive, upload to testflight and send on its way) problem: getting my apple developer certificates on the build machine. I installed Lion, XCode, etc and I signed into my developer account through Xcode organizer, provisioning profiles download,etc. but beside each one it says: valid signing identity not found I also download my certificate from the developer.apple.com page, imported it into keychain, etc but no luck. Anyone else have a similar issue? Or maybe hints to fix? Thanks

• Fonts in menu are larger than they should be under Awesome WM

  I upgraded to oneiric ocelot, running awesome wm. Everything works, more or less, fine but one thing I've noticed is that now my menu fonts and my menu symbols are larger than I'd like them to be. I used to set them in font settings, but now (for one I don't even know where font settings are anymore, I tried gnome-tweak-tool) the font-settings are gone? Surely I'm missing something. My prime example is the program evince whose symbols are ginormous. Any hints how to tweak it?

• Play videos with libwebkit in Ubuntu 11.10 server

  I'm using libwebkit (with python-webkit) to render a page that plays a video. This application works fine in a Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop, Nvidia card and lots of libraries and software installed, but in a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 Server with intel 82945G/GZ card the video does not play. I guess either some codec package is missing or it's a driver problem. What could be missing for this to play? I'm trying with this video: http://video.eustasy.co.uk/480/ EDIT: doesn't look like a driver problem. With chromium I can play the video, but with libwebkit + python-webkit the video just shows the first frame and doesn't play. Any hints on what package could be missing? SOLVED: apparently it had to do with lack of audio. While chrome would play the video with no sound, libwebkit wouldn't start video. Adding user to audio and video groups solved the problem.

• "Operating system not found" after upgrading to 13.10

  I own a Thinkpad X121e and I upgraded its Ubuntu from 13.04 64bit to 13.10 64bit using the Update Manager. When the upgrade process suggested to restart the system, I restarted the computer and now it says "Operating system not found" after a very brief splash screen. The splash screen says something like (too brief to see everything): Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 ... For Atheros ethernet Controller ... Check cable connection! PXE-MOF: Exiting INTEL PXE ROM I prepared a startup USB disk using Ubuntu 13.10. I tried the startup USB and it works very well on other computers. So I changed the booting order of X121e and tried all three USB slots, all said "Operating System not found" without any splash screen. I also tried using startup USB with 12.04 LTS. Same results. I do not really want to reinstall the system now. Any hints on how to proceed?

• Boots to a totally blank screen after I installed some ATI Radeon card updates

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, dual boot with win7 on ThinkPad T400, I followed Ubuntu update hints and installed some update for my ATI Radeon graphic card, but when I boot to Ubuntu(means I can still load GRUB), the tragedy happened, the screen goes to blank and no matter what key stroke, I can not get any responds, I try to go to text terminal, but impossible! However when I hit the power button, the computer would pop out the Ubuntu shutdown screen briefly and shut down. I figure out I should delete the updates package of my graphic card, but I don't even get a chance to go to text terminal, please help me!

• How do I render terrain in a 2.5D perspective, like in the game Don't Starve?

  I have experience in making 2D side scroller games such as Terraria, but now I want to challenge myself and make a game that has a 2.5D perspective. The game I am trying to mimic is Don't Starve. Right now my focus is on figuring out how to render the ground. I am having a hard time figuring out how they generated the ground, and then rendered it. The way I think they rendered the ground is by first painting the ground in some paint program, and then somehow manipulating that flat image so that it appears to have depth. I am completely confused by how you would actually render that type of terrain. I want the terrain to have the following features: Look like the terrain in Don't Starve, here is a video showing the terrain in Don't Starve The terrain will be flat, and the camera's angle and perspective will be fixed Any tips and hints will be appreciated, Thank you in advance. (I am working in Java, using the Light Weight Java Game Library (LWJGL).)

• Fake RAID (dmraid) not seeing new SATA drives

  I have three drives in my machine, one SSD with 32GB and two 1TB drives, attached to an Intel 82801JI (ICH10) SATA AHCI Controller. The problem is, that I can access only one of the 1TB drives when the other one is not plugged in. When it is plugged in I see the drives as sda and sdb, but there seem to be no partitions. Looking at these drives with cfdisk, the partitions are there, though. Both of the 1TB drives are carrying a partition, being part of a software RAID1, created with mdadm. Before I threw the SSD into the mix, the other two have been working fine. Any hints?

• Proxy authentication box not showing (sometimes)

  I'm behind a proxy that require authentication by means of user/pass. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, I think the proxy is "Squid". Usually everything works fine, that means that the browser shows me the window to insert proxy user/pass and I can navigate. The problem: Sometimes the browser refuse to show the authentication windows and if I wait enough it gives me an error like: Errore 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED) Even if I restart, disconnect, the situation doesn't change. BUT on Windows the network (and the proxy) works.. So, bottomline what I know is: the network is working (though only on Windows) the Ubuntu configuration is ok (because i can navigate most days) The problems resolves itself in a few hours but I don't understand why.   I've recently installed Cyanogen Mod 9 on my HP Touchpad tablet, but I'm encountering problems when trying to access it from my Ubuntu laptop (Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome-Shell, Nautilus). I've first tried accessing it via PTP as suggested here. Ubuntu will recognize the Touchpad as a digicam and only grant me access to two directories: "DCIM" and "Pictures". I then tried accessing the tablet via MTP using this post on OMGUbuntu!. Ubuntu will connect to the tablet, but only grant me access to a folder named "Playlists". I'm a bit clueless as to what I'm doing wrong and would very much appreciate any help or hints. Many thanks!

• Android Loading Screen: How do I go about using a stack to load elements, and the option of incrementing the size counter?

  I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

• How do I get Chromium to show PDFs using Evince?

  Is there any way to get Chromium to use a mozpluggerrc/evince combination to show PDFs embedded into its own window? Right now, Chromium is just downloading PDFs. I can open them in an external evince window by clicking on the downloaded file. I am using Chrome 18.0.1025.168 under Ubuntu 12.04 (amd64). Here's the pdf section of my /etc/mozpluggerrc.d/62-documents.conf: application/pdf:pdf:PDF file application/x-pdf:pdf:PDF file text/pdf:pdf:PDF file text/x-pdf:pdf:PDF file repeat noisy swallow(evince) fill needs_xembed: evince "$file" mozpluggerrc does show up in about:plugins. BTW, this works just fine in Firefox. Note: I am not looking for hints on how to use Google Chrome's PDF plugin in Chromium.

• Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Why does Files (Nautilus) stopped updating partition's bookmarks?

  I've upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and noticed that Files (Nautilus) stopped updating my bookmarks that are located in another partition (an ext4 one). It used to work before. Testing, I've found out that, if I add any new bookmark (using CTRL + D, for example), Files then adds this new one and updates all bookmarks, showing that ones that point to my partition. I conclude that the feature (updating bookmarks) works, but it's not being executed when I mount my partition clicking on it. Any hints on how to solve this? Bookmarks really speed up everyday activities.

Is there a similar site for purely logic/functionality-based challenges? For example: - Retrieve data using a web service - Generate output X from a CSV file - Protect this code against SQL injection - Make this code more secure - What is wrong with this code (where the error is in logic, not syntax) - Make this loop more efficient Does a challenge site like that exist? Especially one that provides hints and/or correct solutions. That would be a very helpful learning site.

I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ? If I use telnet client library to communicate with the VM: must I implement a server within the VM to deal with my queries or can I overcome this ? I am jut looing for hints, general ideas. • Graphics problems: noise-like glitch, and screen freezes in Ubuntu 13.04

  I have recently upgraded to 13.04 and am using unity. I am experiencing two intermittent problems with the graphics: 1) All or part of the screen is taken up by 'noise', which lasts for about a second, see screenshot: 2) The launcher panel freezes. I can still move the mouse and the keyboard responds to function keys (I can dim the screen), but I cannot select anything. At the moment I recover by ctr-alt-f1, and restarting lightdm. My computer is a Samsung Chronos 7 laptop, model NP700Z5C, with Intel HD 4000 graphics The same problems occur with lightdm and gdm. I have attempted to install the intel drivers (as the screenshot hints) but these are not indicated as additional drivers in software & updates so I'm not sure whether they are in use. Any suggestions?
