• wpf c# media player questions

  I'm making a media player in wpf using c#. I had 3 questions. 1) I tried making a seeker XAML: <Slider Name="timelineSlider" Margin="40,91,26,0" ValueChanged="SeekToMediaPosition" Height="32" VerticalAlignment="Top" /> Code: private void Element_MediaOpened(object sender, EventArgs e) { timelineSlider.Maximum = ply.NaturalDuration.TimeSpan.TotalMilliseconds; } private void SeekToMediaPosition(object sender, RoutedPropertyChangedEventArgs<double> e) { int SliderValue = (int)timelineSlider.Value; TimeSpan ts = new TimeSpan(SliderValue, SliderValue, SliderValue, SliderValue, SliderValue); ply.Position = ts; } When I run the program, I open the mp3 and play it but the seeker won't move. When I click on the seeker to move it to a certain position, the song stops playing but the seeker moves. What's the problem and how do I fix it? How do I create a volume increase/decrease bar? How can I open several mp3s and queue them up like a playlist? Thank you

• Looking for a component (.NET or COM/ActiveX) that can play AVI files in a WinForms app

  I'm looking for something like the Windows Media Player control that can be hosted on a form. The WMP doesn't work for me because I need a control that can play a continuously-appended playlist of AVI files in sequence, so that the transition from one file to the next happens seamlessly (i.e. without any glitches or pauses in the video and audio). With WMP, there's always a delay between files of half a second or so. Does anyone know of a control (it can be either commercial or open-source) that can do this? I assume anything like this wraps DirectX, and that's OK too.

• Amarok on Ubuntu 9.10 rapidly skipping tracks

  Hello all. Subject really says it all. When I try to click on any track, Amarok rapidly moves through the playlist, pulling external information (wikipedia etc) for each song, but not playing it. I feel like it might be a problem with my sound card or driver or something, but all other media players work fine. I can play sounds from within Amarok when I test different sound devices (they all play). I removed the program and re-installed it and still no luck. Any ideas?

  Hi, I'm looking for a user interface for a MediaPlayer which should be able to play video as well as audio files. Furthermore it needs the following things (nothing fancy): TextView for playing time Progress Bar for progress visulization Play/Pause/Stop buttons NO playlist functionality required, the player will only play a single item (that's why I don't need next/previous buttons). It sounds pretty much like the standard audio-player of Android = 2.0. Sure, I could try to find its source code but that would require to tediously check out the entire source. I'm just asking for a more efficient way. Thanks in advance, steff

• Php is stripping one letter "g" from my rtrim function but not other chars

  I'm trying to trim some youtube URLs that I am reading in from a playlist. The first 3 work fine and all their URLs either end in caps or numbers but this one that ends in a lower case g is getting trimmed one character shorter than the rest. for ($z=0; $z <= 3; $z++) { $ythref2 = rtrim($tubeArray["feed"]["entry"][$z]["link"][0]["href"], '&feature=youtube_gdata'); The URL is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuE88oVCVjg&feature=youtube_gdata .. and it should get trimmed down to .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuE88oVCVjg but instead it is coming out as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuE88oVCVj. I think it may be the ampersand symbol but I am not sure.

• VLC helper protocol on Mac OS X

  Hey everybody, I am trying to add a vlc:// helper protocol on Mac OS X. To register the protocol, I have unsuccessfully been playing around with the MoreInternet PrefPane. What I want to have in my browser is a vlc://someressource.com/audio.mp3, which should launch VLC and add http://someressource.com/audio.mp3 to the playlist (this works fine on Windows and also Linux if I remember correctly). Maybe even just have vlc://http:// so that https would also be supported. I have no idea how to achieve this. I tried making a bash script, which MoreInternet would not accept. Then I tried making an application through Automator with my Bash script embedded. That did not work either, as the Automator application has no "creator code" - whatever that is?! Can any of you guys point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

• Binding keys from specific device in X.org

  I have a remote control for presentations, which generates Next/Prior key events in X.org (Page up/down). I'd like to use these for navigating in playlist (using MPD, but it probably does not matter). The problem is that I want to make this control work all the time (without application having focus) and I don't want to lose Page up/down functionality from normal keyboard. Is there some application which would allow me to bind actions to events from specific keyboard? Or is there simple way to implement such thing on my own?

• Disable the Splash Screen in Portable Firefox (and Other Portable Apps)

  Portable applications are cool because you can run them on any machine from your thumb drive. What isn’t cool is the annoying splash screens that appear when launching the apps. Here’s how to disable the annoyance. In this example we are using Portable Apps version 1.6.1. Disable Splash Screen in Portable Firefox  To disable the Splash Screen, open up Computer and double-click on your flash drive containing PortableApps.   Now browse to the following location… PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Other\Source In this directory you’ll find the file FirefoxPortable.ini. Open this file with Notepad… This ini file should look similar to the shot below. By default, the line DisableSplashScreen=False … we just need to change False to True. Then make sure to save the change… Now copy the FirefoxPortable.ini file we just edited. Then go back to the main directory PortableApps \ FirefoxPortable and paste it there. That is all there is to it! Now when you launch Portable Firefox, you won’t have to wait while the Splash Screen displays before you can start using it. If you ever want to revert back to having the Splash Screen display, all you’ll need to do is delete FirefoxPortable.ini from PortableApps \ FirefoxPortable. The process is essentially the same in other PortableApps as well. Just follow the steps shown above. For example here we’re disabling the Splash Screen from KeePassPortable by going into the thumb drive PortableApps \ KeePassPortable \ Other \ Source and changing the KeePassPortable.ini file for DisableSplashScreen to equal True. Save it… Then copy it to the main KeePassPortable directory… If you are annoyed by having to see the Splash Screen every time you launch a portable app, following these steps rids the annoyance! • Add Transitions to Slideshows in PowerPoint 2010

  Sitting through PowerPoint presentation can sometimes get a little boring. You can make your slideshows more interesting by adding transitions between the slides in your presentations. Transitions certainly aren’t new to PowerPoint, but Office 2010 adds a number of exciting new transitions and options. Add Transitions Select the slide to which you want to apply a transition. On the Transitions tab, select the More button to reveal the all transition options in the gallery.   Select the transition you’d like to apply to your slide. The transitions are divided into three types…Subtle, Exciting, and Dynamic Content. You can hover your mouse over each item in the gallery to preview the transition with Live Preview. You can adjust many of the transitions using Effect Options. The options will vary depending on which transition you’ve selected.   You can add additional customizations in the Timing Group. You can add sound by selecting one of the options in the Sound dropdown list…   You can change the duration of the transition… Or choose to advance the slide On Mouse Click (default) or automatically after a certain period of time.   If you’d like to apply one transition to every slide in your presentation, select the Apply To All button. You can preview your transition by clicking the Preview button on the Transitions tab. • How to Assign a Static IP to an Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Computer

  If you have a home network with several computers, assigning them static IP addresses can make troubleshooting easier. Today we take a look at switching from DHCP to a static IP in Ubuntu. Assign a Static IP Using Static IPs prevents address conflicts between machines and can allow easier access to them. If you have a small home network and are satisfied with the machines getting their IP address automatically via DHCP, there won’t be anything gained by using static addresses. Using Static IPs isn’t necessarily for the average user, but if you’re a geek who wants to know the address assigned to each machine, it can allow for faster troubleshooting.  To change your Ubuntu machine to a Static IP go to System \ Preferences \ Network Connections. In our example, we’re on a wired system so click on the Wired tab, then select Auto eth0 and click on Edit. Select the IPv4 settings tab, change Method to Manual, click the Add button. Then type in the Static IP Address, Subnet Mask, DNS Servers, and Default Gateway. Then click Apply when you’re finished. Make sure to hit Enter after typing in the Default Gateway otherwise it will revert back to 0.0.0.0 You’ll need to enter in your admin password before the changes go into affect. To verify the changes have been made successfully launch a Terminal session and type in ifconfig at the command prompt, or follow these directions. You also might want to ping the address from another machine to make sure everything is communicating. If you want to assign a Static IP to your Windows machines, check out our article on how to assign a Static IP on Windows systems (make sure to browse the comments as our readers have some good suggestions).  Whether you have a small office or home network set up with a server and several machines, using a Static IP on each device can help you manage them easily. • Save Links for Later Reading in Firefox

  Do you want a simple way to save and manage links for reading later? The Save-To-Read extension for Firefox makes it easy to do without an account. Using Save-To-Read As soon as you install the extension you will notice two new additions to your UI. You will see a small plus sign in the address bar and a new toolbar button (opens and closes the sidebar shown here). Your bookmarks menu will also have a new folder entry. For our example we chose to save three pages for later reading. Each time you want to save a website click on the small plus sign, and it is automatically added to your read later list. Our second article… And finally the third article. Notice that the small plus sign has become a minus sign after adding the article to our list. Opening the sidebar shows our three entries waiting to be read. Checking the bookmarks menu shows the same articles available there. When you are ready to read your articles simply click on the link in the sidebar, bookmarks menu, etc. Notice that the entry is still available at the moment…there are no automatic deletions until you are finished with an article. This is great if you accidentally click the wrong link before you are ready for it. Removing an article from the list is as simple as clicking on the address bar minus sign. It will revert to a plus sign and the entry is no longer visible in your list. For those who want to avoid using a sidebar there is a different toolbar button available too. The alternate toolbar button provides access to a drop-down article list. Choose the access style that best suits your needs. Preferences The preferences are simple to work with and focus on appearance/ease-of-use. Conclusion If you have been looking for a simpler alternative to other “read later” extensions, then Save-To-Read could be just what you have been waiting for. • The Developer's Conference Florianópolis, Brazil

  by guest blogger Yara Senger With over 2900 developers in person and another 2000 online, The Developer's Conference (TDC) in Florianópolis, Brazil, reminds us that Java is BIG in Brazil. The conference included 20 different tracks, and Java was the most popular track. Java was also a big part of the talks in the IoT, Cloud and BigData tracks. Here's my overview (in Brazilian Portguese): Several JUGs were involved in TDC Florianópolis, serving as track leads, speakers and all-around heros, including SouJava SouJava Campinas GUJava Santa Catarina JUG Vale JUG Maringá Java Bahia GOJava (Goinia) JUG Rio do Sul RS Jug (Rio Grande do Sul) and I thank them for their support and commitment. It is a vibrant and fun community! We saw that the IoT space is maturing rapidly. There are already some related to embedded in the region.  Java Evangelist Bruno Borges and Marco Antonio Maciel gave a view popular talk "Java: Tweet for Beer!" They demonstrated how to make a beer tap controlled by Java and connected to the Internet, using a visual application JavaFX with Java SE 8, running on a Rasperry Pi. Of course, they had to test the application quite throughly.   We Brazilians are training the next generation of Java developers. TDC4Kids was as big success. We made a tour with the kids in all booths and almost everybody talked about Java. Java in government managment (Betha), Java on the 2048  (Oracle), Java on the popcorn machine and Java training (Globalcode & V.Office) and of course: Java & Minecraft! OTN's Pablo Ciccarello was there to support the community.  He did several video interviews with JUG leaders and speakers (mine included). • Getting my younger brother started on programming

  My younger brother is 13 years old, I started programming when I started to develop Android applications when I was 15, last year my brother gained an interest in it and he would always pestering me about letting him make something himself, so I wrote him a few tutorials and he built himself a small application that had a few buttons that did something, I think you put in your dob and it would tell you what day you were born on, he took a couple of days building up to his final application, maybe even a week, learning everything he needed. Since then he hasn't really done much more because I have been engulfed in work and such where I have my own programming problems to sort out. I told him that when he was my age (I am 17) that he should be better then me, he was a bit sceptical about this however. I dont think he has as much logical reasoning as I would think he needs to solve more complex problems, but shouldnt that just develop over time as it did with me? He has been pestering me for the past week or something to write him more tutorials, but I didn't have time. All I had with me was a playlist I had downloaded from the new boston from youtube for C++, it's about 73 videos. He is currently about 20-30 videos in, he has come to ask me a few questions about it and thats it. Should I have really properly started him with C++? Should I stop him now and start him again on python or ruby? I know that C++ shouldn't really be a beginners language, especially for someone who is only 13, by the time this question is answered will probably be up to learning about inheritance or something. Some people may see this as not a real question, but it is, and should be used as a reference for others. I want to know, should I start him on a different language whch is more easy? What language then? And would it be better for me to teach him myself (I would make time) or just continue him with the new boston? There are a few more questions throughout this question but these are the main ones. Part of the question people seem to be neglecting is me asking whether I should change what language he is learning to another, or since he is already pretty far through the tutorials should I just leave him with C++ and he can learn the other languages freely by himself?

For example: If I want to do a safe distribution of original music for demostration purposes I will need several requisites: 1) The music should be heard using a simple procedure like selecting the name of each song on a playlist of a mediaplayer. 2) The portable media, ussually a portable USB drive, must hide for complete and should make unaccesible the files that contain the audio data to anything but the mediaplayer, that must be in the first partition, the one that is visible. 3) Considering that´s impossible to really hide files in a non-hidden partition, a second hidden partition should be created in the USB drive and the audio data will be stored there. 4) The trick is to read the audio data files stored in the hidden partition with a mediaplayer stored in the visible partition, the media player also should be a complete standalone program and independent from any library of the operating system except of the OS audio system. 5) The hidden partition should have a copy protection scheme that could impede to do copies of the data or create working ISO images of it. I know that this description could not be technically accurate but it has a complete logic from the needs of a music producer against the problem of piracy. The philosophy that surrounds the concept is to transform a virtual object like a digital string of audio in a solid object like the analog vinyl discs are.

• Winamp question: Generating 'dynamic playlists' from file playlists -OR- mass-tagging by file playli

  I'm trying to think of a way to do this. I sort my songs into a variety of playlists corresponding to different 'moods' I might have as I listen to them, and some songs fit for more than one kind of mood (e.g. a jazz song might be 'stylish' and 'emotional', or something to that effect). I also give them star ratings for a general sort of opinion about them. I want to be able to filter and sort my media library by the moods I want or don't want, as well as by star rating. Anyone have a good way to do something like this? I can't seem to use Winamp's dynamic playlists to generate lists from existing filesystem playlists (e.g. songs in a given .m3u files). Hand-tagging files with Winamp's tag editor is a royal pain. It's trouble enough just giving a star rating and sorting into playlists as is. If there is there a way to mass tag songs within each playlist with mood words to allow me to create dynamic playlists, I'd be fine (for now). It'd be nice if I could do this via some kind of hotkey for each song, too. I'm looking to see if I can use a macro program or something to do that, though. Thanks in advance. • How to play individual albums in iTunes?

  I know of two ways to play one specific album in iTunes: Do a search that's specific enough to include just that album and no other tracks; press a "Play album" button. (Doesn't work in cover flow or list view.) Go to list view; turn on column browser; in View/Column Browser, make sure "Albums" is showing; double-click an album name. These are fine as far as they go, but: Double-clicking an album in cover flow will play the album, and then keep going (in alphabetical order). That's no good. In playlists like "Purchased" or "Recently Added", you can either view and play whole albums, or sort by date added; you can't do both. In general, there's no straightforward way to get from a track in a playlist to the whole album it belongs to. What I would really, really like, would be to right-click on any song or album cover, anywhere, and choose "Play album". While I'm waiting for Apple to add that, any tips for simple album-centric listening?

• Shuffling in windows media player

  I think media player has several issues indeed. You see, I'll be hearing songs most of the time using WMP 11 (in WinXP SP3). Today - While I was wasting my time poking some sleepy questions in SE, I also noticed this... My "Now-playing" list contains some 500 mp3s (doesn't matter). I've enabled both Shuffle and Repeat. I play those songs. When I get irritated with some song (say - the 10th song), I change it. Something mysterious happened (happens even now). A sequence of atleast 3 songs (already played before the 10th song) repeat again in the same way following the selected one... Then, I skip those somehow and arrive at another boring song (say now - 20th) and now, the sequence would've increased by about 5 songs (sometimes)... Sometimes, I even notice a specific "sequence of songs" (including the skipped one) repeating again & again. I doubt most guys would've noticed. This makes me ask a question - Why? There are a lot songs in my playlist. Why the same sets of songs? Does WMP really chooses a sequence at start and follows it. Once a change is encountered, it starts the sequence again after several songs. Is it so? Feel free to shoot it down. I don't know whether it's acceptable here. Just curious about it... Note: This is only observed when both shuffle and repeat are enabled. To confirm, I tried it in two other PCs of mine (thereby dumped 2 hours). BTW, I also didn't observe this magic in VLC, Winamp, K-Lite and not even my Nokia cellphone. I think I'm not a good Googler and so, I can't find any such issues :-)

• Playback random section from multiple videos changing every 5 minutes

  I'm setting up the A/V for a holiday party this weekend and have an idea that I'm not sure how to implement. I have a bunch of Christmas movies (Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, etc.) that I'd like to have running continuously at the party. The setup is a MacBook connected to a projector. I want this to be a background ambiance thing so it's going to be running silently. Since all of the movies are in the +1 hour range, instead of just playing them all through from beginning to end, I'd like to show small samples randomly and continuously. Ideally the way it would work is that every five minutes it would choose a random 5-minute sample from a random movie in the playlist/directory and display it. Once that clip is over, it should choose another clip and do some sort of fade/wipe to the chosen clip. I'm not sure where to start on this, beginning with what player I should use. Can VLC do something like this? MPlayer? If there's a player with an extensive scripting language (support for rand(), video length discovery, random video access). If so, I will probably be able to RTFM and get it working; it's just that I don't have time to backtrack from dead-ends so I'd like to start off on the right track. Any suggestions?

• Problems setting up VLC Sever/client streaming

  I'm trying to set up a Linux machine as the server and a Windows XP machine as the client. Both machines are connected to the same local network via a Wi-Fi router. I setup the stream with the following properties : http stream port 8080 play locally And not much else. • Add New Features to WMP with Windows Media Player Plus

  Do you use Windows Media Player 11 or 12 as your default media player? Today, we’re going to show you how to add some handy new features and enhancements with the Windows Media Player Plus third party plug-in. Installation and Setup Download and install Media Player Plus! (link below). You’ll need to close out of Windows Media Player before you begin or you’ll receive the message below. The next time you open Media Player you’ll be presented with the Media Player Plus settings window. Some of the settings will be enabled by default, such as the Find as you type feature. Using Media Player Plus! Find as you type allows you to start typing a search term from anywhere in Media Player without having to be in the Search box. The search term will automatically fill in the search box and display the results.   You’ll also see Disable group headers in the Library Pane.   This setting will display library items in a continuous list similar to the functionality of Windows Media Player 10. Under User Interface you can enable displaying the currently playing artist and title in the title bar. This is enabled by default.   The Context Menu page allows you to enable context menu enhancements. The File menu enhancement allows you to add the Windows Context menu to Media Player on the library pane, list pane, or both. Right click on a Title, select File, and you’ll see the Windows Context Menu. Right-click on a title and select Tag Editor Plus. Tag Editor Plus allows you to quickly edit media tags.   The Advanced tab displays a number of tags that Media Player usually doesn’t show. Only the tags with the notepad and pencil icon are editable.   The Restore Plug-ins page allows you to configure which plug-ins should be automatically restored after a Media Player crash. The Restore Media at Startup page allows you to configure Media Player to resume playing the last playlist, track, and even whether it was playing or paused at the time the application was closed. So, if you close out in the middle of a song, it will begin playing from that point the next time you open Media Player. You can also set Media Player to rewind a certain number of seconds from where you left off. This is especially useful if you are in the middle of watching a movie. There’s also the option to have your currently playing song sent to Windows Live Messenger. You can access the settings at any time by going to Tools, Plug-in properties, and selecting Windows Media Player Plus. Windows Media Plus is a nice little free plug-in for WMP 11 and 12 that brings a lot of additional functionality to Windows Media Player. If you use Media Player 11 or WMP 12 in Windows 7 as your main player, you might want to give this a try. Download Windows Media Player Plus! • Make Text and Images Easier to Read with the Windows 7 Magnifier

  Do you have impaired vision or find it difficult to read small print on your computer screen? Today, we’ll take a closer look at how to magnify that hard to read content with the Magnifier in Windows 7. Magnifier was available in previous versions of Windows, but the Windows 7 version comes with some notable improvements. There are now three screen modes in Magnifier. Full Screen and Lens mode, however, require Windows Aero to be enabled. If your computer doesn’t support Aero, or if you’re not using am Aero theme, Magnifier will only work in Docked mode. Using Magnifier in Windows 7 You can find the Magnifier by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > Magnifier.   Alternately, you can type magnifier into the Search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter. On the Magnifier toolbar, choose your View mode by clicking Views and choosing from the available options. Clicking the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons will zoom in or zoom out. You can change the zoom in/out percentage by adjusting the slider bar. You can also enable color inversion and select tracking options. Click OK when finished to save your settings.   After a brief period, the Magnifier Toolbar will switch to a magnifying glass icon. Simply click the magnifying glass to display the Magnifier Toolbar again.   Docked Mode In Docked mode, a portion of the screen is magnified and docked at the top of the screen. The rest of your desktop will remain in it’s normal state. You can then control which area of the screen is magnified by moving your mouse.   Full Screen Mode This magnifies your entire screen and follows your mouse as you move it around. If you loose track of where you are on the screen, use the Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar shortcut to preview where your mouse pointer is on the screen.   Lens Mode The Lens screen mode is similar to holding a magnifying glass up to your screen. Full screen mode magnifies the area around the mouse.   Before I start I should add I am a musician and not a native programmer, this was undertook to make my life easier. Here is the situation, at work I'm given a new csv file each which contains a list of sound files, their length, and the minimum total amount of time they must be played. I create a playlist of exactly 60 minutes, from this excel file. Each sample played the by the minimum number of instances, but spread out from each other; so there will never be a period where for where one sound is played twice in a row or in close proximity to itself. Secondly, if the minimum instances of each song has been used, and there is still time with in the 60 min, it needs to fill the remaining time using sounds till 60 minutes is reached, while adhering to above. The smallest duration possible is 15 seconds, and then multiples of 15 seconds. Here is what I came up with in python and the problems I'm having with it, and as one user said its buggy due to the random library used in it. So I'm guessing a total rethink is on the table, here is where I need your help. Whats is the best way to solve the issue, I have had a brief look at things like knapsack and bin packing algorithms, while both are relevant neither are appropriate and maybe a bit beyond me.
