• How to write an iphone application to control a device that exposes a telnet api

  Hi! I have to write an iphone application that controls a device. This device exposes a telnet based interface. The application should ideally have user access control and customizability for each user. I was thinking of writing C++ classes that would communicate with the device using sockets. This functionality can then be exposed through web-services that can be called by the iphone application. However as i looked into it deeper, the api allows you to register for events using telnet and then you can receive notification when those events occur. That kinda put a spanner in the works for me. I for one dont know a "push" scenario can work with webservices. First off i have never programmed for the iphone so far. So i am not really sure what can be done. So i was thinking if instead of having a webserver to go through, why not have the application independently running on the iphone, directly communicating with the device using sockets. The question though is, is that possible and second i am thinking it would raise a security aspect. First we could control security as everything was going through our central server. Is there a way to handle security (in the sense who has access to the device) without having a central server. I am sorry that this seems like an unorganized post, but iam trying to brainstorm here. I was thinking that API could be a webservice. So my questions are: I need high performance to execute the script. So my first choice was LUA script. Someone has another sugestion? Cause I need high perfomance, I was thinking if the webservice is the best solution. Maybe I could create a TCP/IP Windows Service that hold the users request. It is important to say that I will have many user executing scripts at the same time. So I will have a concurrency problem. My scripts will query in a database. I will use Tokyo Cabinet or Tokio Tyrant. I think Tokio Tyrant is the only solution cause I will have many requests. For perfomance, Do I need to make a connection pooling? Is there anyway to share variables between webservices requests? To make the webservice or the Windows service i was thinking to use C++. Can someone help with these questions? thanks

• Persist changes in C

  I am developing a database-like application that stores a a structure containing: struct Dictionary { char *key; char *value; struct Dictionary *next; }; As you can see, I am using a linked list to store information. But the problem begins when the user exits out of the program. I want the information to be stored somewhere. So I was thinking of storing the linked list in a permanent or temporary file using fopen, then, when the user starts the program, retrieve the linked list. Here is the method that prints the linked list to the console: void PrintList() { int count = 0; struct Dictionary *current; current = head; if (current == NULL) { printf("\nThe list is empty!"); return; } printf(" Key \t Value\n"); printf(" ======== \t ========\n"); while (current != NULL) { count++; printf("%d. %s \t %s\n", count, current->key, current->value); current = current->next; } } So I am thinking of modifying this method to print the information through fprintf instead of printf and then the program would just get the infomation from the file. Could someone help me on how I can read and write to this file? What kind of file should it be, temporary or regular? How should I format the file (like I was thinking of just having the key first, then the value, then a newline character)?

• Empty data problem - data layer or DAL?

  I designing the new App now and giving the following question a lot of thought. I consume a lot of data from the warehouse, and the entities have a lot of dictionary based values (currency, country, tax-whatever data) - dimensions. I cannot be assured though that there won't be nulls. So I am thinking: create an empty value in each of teh dictionaries with special keyID - ie. -1 do the ETL (ssis) do the correct stuff and insert -1 where it needs to let the DAL know that -1 is special (Static const whatever thing) don't care in the code to check for nullness of dictionary entries because THEY will always have a value But maybe I should be thinking: import data AS IS let the DAL do the thinking using empty record Pattern still don't care in the code because business layer will have what it needs from DAL. I think is more of a approach thing but maybe i am missing something important here... What do You think? Am i clear? Please don't confuse it with empty record problem. I do use emptyCustomer think all the time and other defaults too.

  Hello, I'm writing this application that will allow a user to define custom quizzes and then allow another user to respond to the questions. Each question of the quiz has a corresponding datatype. All the responses to all the questions are stored vertically in my [Response] table. I currently use 2 fields to store the response. //Response schema ResponseID int QuizPersonID int QuestionID int ChoiceID int //maps to Choice table, used for drop down lists ChoiceValue varbinary(MAX) //used to store a user entered value I'm using .net 3.5 C# SQL Server 2008. I'm thinking that I would want to store different datatypes in the same field and then in my SQL report proc I would CONVERT to the proper datatype. I'm thinking this is ideal because I only have to check one field. I'm also thinking it might be more trouble than it is worth. I think my other options are to; store the data as strings in the db (yuck), or to have a column for each datatype I might use. So what I would like to know is, how would I format my datatypes in C# so that they can be converted properly in SQL? What is the performance hit for converting in SQL? Should I just make a whole wack of columns for each datatype?

• How to architect Rails site that can be edited while running?

  Hi, I am writing a Rails app that "scrapes/navigates" some other websites and webservices for content. I am using Mechanize and Savon to do the heavylifting. But given the dynamic nature of the web, I'd like to make my calls to these editable by the admin users of the site - rather than requiring me to release a new version of the site. The actual scraping thread happens async to the website, using the daemons gem. My requirements are: Thinking that the scraping/webservice calling code is quite simple, the easiest route is to make the whole class editable by the admins. Keep a history of the scraping code - so that we can fairly easily revert if we introduce a problem. Initially use the code from the file system, but as soon as thats been edited and stored somewhere, to use that code instead. I am thinking my options are: Store the code in the db (with a history table for the old versions) Store the code in a private git repo somewhere and access that for the history/latest versions. I am thinking the git route might be easiest, given its raison d'etre is to track file history... But perhaps there is a gem/plugin that does all this for me, out of the box? Let us say I have a car and want to sell it: car = Cars.find(24) car.sell car.sell method will check a few things: does current_user own the car? check: car.user_id == current_user.id is the car listed for sale in the sales catalog? check: car.catalogs.ids.include? car.id if all o.k. then car is marked as sold. I think that whenever a controller action is called, it's always a "fresh" call right? If so then storing the current user as a global variable should not introduce any risks..(like some other user being able to access another user's details) Any insights are appreciated! UPDATE So, the global variable route is out! Thanks to PeterWong for pointing out that global variables persist! I've now thinking of using this way: class Rules def self.can_sell_car?(current_user, car) ......checks.... end end And then calling Rules.can_sell_car?(current_user,@car) from the controller action.   I am building an application using entity framework. I am using the T4 template to generate self tracking entities. Currently, I am thinking of creating the entity framework code in a separate project. In this same project, I would have partial classes with additional methods for the entities. I am thinking of creating a separate project for a service layer (WCF) with methods for the upper/presentation tier. The WCF layer will reference the entity framework project. The methods in the WCF layer will return the entities or accept the entities as the parameters. I am thinkg of creating a third project for the presentation layer (ASP.net), this will make calls to the WCF service but will also need to reference the entities as the WCF methods take these types as the parameters/return types. In short, i want to use the STE entities generated by the T4 template as a DTO to be used in all layers. I was originally thinking of creating a business logic layer that maps to each entities. Example: If i have a customer class, the Business Layer would have a CustomerBLL class and then methods in the customerBLL will be used by the service layer. I was also trying to create a DTO in this business layer. I however found that this approach is very time consuming and i do not see a major benefit as it would create more maintenance work. What is the best practice for n-tier application development using entity framework 4?

I have this sample: ID count columnA ColumnB 12 1 A B 13 2 C D 14 3 B C I want to sort it like this: ID count ColumnA ColumnB 12 1 A B 14 3 B C 13 2 C D so I need to sort the rows if the previous row of ColumnB = the next row of ColumnA I'm thinking a loop? but can't quite imagine how it will work... • How to extend an existing Ruby on Rails CMS to host multiple sites?

  I am trying to build a CMS I can use to host multiple sites. I know I'm going to end up reinventing the wheel a million times with this project, so I'm thinking about extending an existing open source Ruby on Rails CMS to meet my needs. One of those needs is to be able to run multiple sites, while using only one code-base. That way, when there's an update I want to make, I can update it in one place, and the change is reflected on all of the sites. I think that this will be able to scale by running multiple instances of the application. I think that I can use the domain/subdomain to determine which data to display. For example, someone goes to subdomain1.mysite.com and the application looks in the database for the content for subdomain1. The problem I see is with most pre-built CMS solutions, they are only designed to host one site, including the one I want to use. So the database is structured to work with one site. However, I had the idea that I could overcome this by "creating a new database" for each site, then specifying which database to connect to based on the domain/subdomain as I mentioned above. I'm thinking of hosting this on Heroku, so I'm wondering what my options for this might be. I'm not very familiar with Amazon S3, or Amazon SimpleDB, but I feel like there's some sort of "cloud database" that would make this solution a lot more realistic, than creating a new MySQL database for each site. What do you think? Am I thinking about this the wrong way? What advice do you have to offer in this area?

• Cancel text selection on textinput in Flex

  So the real problem is the lack of an onReleaseOutside function. I found some examples of how to bypass this during a drag function but it was not applicable for a text input. The problem is that when a user selects some text in textinput and mouses off the application area and then mouses up, I'm getting a problem that the textinput keeps thinking that the mouse down is actively selecting text in the textinput and continually overwrites the characters being entered in the textinput. You can test this at http://palermo.infusedindustries.com [ in the search bar of the live store on the page, type some text, then highlight it all and don't let up on the mouse until you are outside the store. I finally hacked some junk together so I can tell if the mouse goes off the stage using some code like var x = stage.mouseX; var y = stage.mouseY; if(x < 0 || y <0 || x >stage.stageWidth || y > stage.stageHeight) I'd like to just make the textinput stop thinking it should be highlighting text so that even if the user scrolls out of the applet and mouses up that the text input still overwrites what is in the search bar and functions as normal. I can't seem to find any events or ways to tell the Flex text field to stop thinking that the mouse is down and that the user is done selecting text.

Two of them are using usb graphic adapters. One 720 projector - directly connect to the graphic card via DVI. One 30'' dell monitor - currently connect to laptop via VGA. I would like to connect 30' dell to my main computer. I do not game or use graphic applications. What would be my best options? So i was thinking about replacing the built in 500 GB hdd with some kind of SDD Currently two choices: OCZ Vertex Series 60 GB vs. Intel X25-M G2 MLC 80 GB Price is almost the same. From anandtech Intel performs badly in sequential write, but scores very high numbers in random write and random read (good for visual studio?) and i get more space. What do you think? OCZ Vertex or Intel X25-M G2 ? Purely from Visual Studio 2008 and upcoming 2010 perspective?

• How do I use an include statement in a TXT record?

  We have a client that is using an email service that requires a TXT domain key reocrd that is over 127 characters long. I'm pretty sure BIND allows this, however we run djbdns with tinydns and it looks as though it only supports txt records up to 127 characters. And the rest is being truncated. I was thinking I can do an include combining them, but I'm not really sure how. I was thinking of setting the value to somthing like... v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQC2GWCNaDTuC3include:bdk2._domainkey.mail.cutlerymania.com My thought is, will this grab the actual value located at that domain which only has one record which is a TXT record and simply append that information so the entire key record gets sent correctly?

• Laptop battery: is voltage really important to respect?

  I got an Acer Aspire 5100 and I just bought a new battery (after the stock battery just died yesterday). But I saw something after buying and I'm wondering whether it's really important or not. My stock battery was a 6-cell 4000mah 11.1v and the new battery is an 8-cell 4800mah 14.8v . I know that 8-cell and 4800mah is okay, but what about the 14.8v instead of 11.1v? The battery description says it's compatible with my laptop model (AS5100, model BL51), but the voltage difference makes me wonder. Will the laptop only take what it needs? Or will it be getting 14.8v straight in the brain? I know that my wall plug claims to output 19v, so logically I'm thinking a higher voltage battery shouldn't be a problem.   Has anyone rolled out Google Chrome to a medium / large organisation? I would like to suggest it to our management (because I think it would work very nicely with some of our intranet applications), and I would like to find out what problems (if any) the rest of the world has been experiencing with it. Have you found any problems? I'm thinking of enterprise-level problems. I'm thinking that we can solve anything that requires a specific configuration / proxy setting / etc. I don't really know what I think might be a problem, but I wonder if there are any usability problems that occur when non-geeks use it? Or problems which only rear their ugly heads when you've got 50 users all doing something unexpected. Any helpful information or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. • Snippets between desktop and laptop

  The Situation: At work, I have a nice beefy desktop running Windows Server 2008 R2 (SharePoint dev machine). My handy ThinkPad is right next to it. Every once in a while I'd like to cut and paste or share something (usually text) between the machines: for example, I might be headed out and I'd like to take send the URL I'm reading from the desktop to the laptop. Of course I can create a share or use the Admin shares and create files to get stuff back and forth, but that seems heavyweight for what I'm thinking of. I'm thinking more along the lines of sending myself an IM. How do you get little things from machine to machine? Keep a shared folder pinned to the taskbar? Send an email to yourself? Bookmark sync? While on it, I'm looking for a decent multiple clipboard handler: maybe these two functions are combined in some nice little utility? I suspect I'm missing something simple here... Thanks... • Creating an app pool a month to limit the scope of issues

  I have about 360 sites running on a single app pool. Now I know we have a coding issue with one of those sites, were we have accidentally coded a memory leak. So what happens is the site runs, the memory leak starts and soon the app pool runs out of memory. Then slowly but surely, the rest of the 360 sites start going down like a domino affect. I understand that the root of the problem is some bad coding, which we'll fix, but instead of bringing down said 360 sites, I was thinking, we could create a new app-pool monthly that every site we create would go into that months app pool. First, that limit the scope of the issues to 5 - 20 sites and second if one site started having issues we wouldn't be bringing down all 360 sites. • System and active partitions, and "System Reserved"

  Upon trying a 3rd party bootloader (loaded from a disc), and trying to boot into my partition "Windows 7", I get "BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". But ordinary booting works fine. So I'm thinking, that perhaps it's because of my partitions. Upon opening "Disk Management", I notice out of my partitions, "System Reserved", "Windows 7" and "Documents", "Documents" is marked as both System and Active. I've looked into what an active partition is, and what "System Reserved" is for, so I'm thinking - should I mark "System Reserved" as active? The problem is, all images of Disk Management depicting "System Reserved" have it with both System and Active attributes, and so I am unsure on what to do, and also on why my "Documents" partition even is marked with System and Active.

• Idle VMware Guests Resource Consumption

  I want to setup a number of guests with multiple CPUs (4) and at least 4Gb ram running Ubuntu Linux. These machines will mostly be idle, but from time to time their workload will require all their resources, especially the CPU. The hosts are ESXi 5.x. The question is, am I right in thinking that the resource consumption of the machines when idle will be negligible? We know this true of disk and the CPU. The only concern left therefore is memory. Since ESX over-commits memory it makes sense that unused memory of any guest is paged out. If my thinking correct?

• An efficient setup of several VPSs on one box?

  Hello all, I hope its ok to ask this question on serverfault, its not an actual fault but more of an implementation advice request. I would like to have a dedicated server that I can deploy my own VPSs on. These VPS will be various windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. I was thinking of buying a large Linux based dedicated server and then running VMWare Server or Virtualbox and adding my own images on there for each OS but I am thinking this isn't going to be cost effective and easy to maintain. I am hoping someone can help me with the perfect setup that is both cost effective and efficient so that I can have 6 VPS at my disposal that I can easily control. Thanks all for any help.

• Deny Access to directories from unauthorized users

  I am not being paid for this and I would like to know the quickest way to do the following. A former client has a page which only members can access. This page links to a number of galleries which he only wants members to access. The galleries are not protected by any kind of authentication. What I assume is the quickest way to do this is to create a .htaccess file which only allow people to view the site when the come from a certain referrer. Would this work? My current thinking is that I could use a php script to deploy a .htaccess file into each of the gallery directories. (There are around a 100 at the moment.) I found this link which might be what I am after but to be honest I really don't get it. Is my thinking sound?

• Upgrading NAS hard drives

  I was thinking of buying a NAS for home-usage. I've never used a NAS or had HDDs set up in Raids. Before I commit myself to moving all my data to a NAS I need to find out how difficult it is to upgrade and replace the NAS' hard drives. Suppose I set up a Raid 1 NAS with two 1TB hdds. At some point in the future I will use up all the space and will have to install two new 2TB hdds. Now I'll need to migrate the data from the old disks to the new ones. Will I have to hook up one of the old disks in a computer and copy all the data back in the NAS? Or can the migration be done using only the NAS? I realize the answer to the question might depend on the NAS model. Being a simple for-home solution I was thinking of getting something along the lines of D-link's 323.
