• Parallelism in Python

  What are the options for achieving parallelism in Python? I want to perform a bunch of CPU bound calculations over some very large rasters, and would like to parallelise them. Coming from a C background, I am familiar with three approaches to parallelism: Message passing processes, possibly distributed across a cluster, e.g. MPI. Explicit shared memory parallelism, either using pthreads or fork(), pipe(), et. al Implicit shared memory parallelism, using OpenMP. Deciding on an approach to use is an exercise in trade-offs. In Python, what approaches are available and what are their characteristics? Is there a clusterable MPI clone? What are the preferred ways of achieving shared memory parallelism? I have heard reference to problems with the GIL, as well as references to tasklets. In short, what do I need to know about the different parallelization strategies in Python before choosing between them?

• How do I share an NSArrayController between two nib files?

  I have an array of images, and two nib files. One nib file has a window that displays the images in an NSTableView. The other nib has a window that draws the array of images into an NSView, and also draws a highlight over the images that are selected. The array of images is controlled by an NSArrayController. I'm having trouble getting the two nibs to share the NSArrayController. I would have two separate NSArrayControllers bound to the same content, but I also want both nibs to share the controller's selection; that is, if you select an image in the table window, it also becomes selected in the other window. Is there a standard way to do this?

• How do I mock memory allocation failures ?

  I want to extensively test some pieces of C code for memory leaks. On my machine I have 4 Gb of RAM, so it's very unlikely for a dynamic memory allocation to fail. Still I want to see the comportment of the code if memory allocation fails, and see if the recover mechanism is "strong" enough. What do you suggest ? How do I emulate an environment with lower memory specs ? How do i mock my tests ? EDIT: I want my tests to be code independent. I only have "access" to return values for different functions in the library I am testing. I am not supposed to write "test logic" inside the code I am testing.

  I have a list element in my model instance. I am using Orbeon XForms. <mypage> <list name='mylist'/> <status /> </mypage> Status can be Private or Public. In xforms:binding, I want to set relevant attribute for showing/hiding the list. The list is bound to a drop-down. If status is Private I want to show the list, if status is Public I want to hide the list.   I have a wpf tabitem whose data context is set to my object 'Product'. All the controls on this form get their data from 'Product' object. I have a listview whose ItemsSource property is set to a list in my object 'Product.DetailsList'. Listview columns are bound to object properties in 'Product.DetailsList' Up till here everything works fine. Now I need to bind some of the columns in my listview to the properties in my datacontext object i.e.'Product'. Can someone tell me how can i achieve this?

• design time usercontrols - I can't see anything!

  newbie question, please forgive... I'm developing a Wpf UserControl that will eventually be bound to a business object. The usercontrol is little more than a series of laid out TextBlocks, and perhaps (later) an image or two. As I'm laying out the usercontrol, I can put dummy text into all the TextBlocks so I can see what the usercontrol will look like, but as soon as I change the text property to contain the Binding information: <TextBlock Margin="0,12.8,42,0" Name="lblLastName" FontSize="8" Height="19" VerticalAlignment="Top" Text="{Binding Mode=OneWay, Path=LastName}"/> Then I can no longer see the textbox, or any "placeholder" text. This makes it very difficult to adjust the location and sizes of all the controls on the UserControl. In WinFormas programming, you could set binding information independently of the Text property, so you could at least see the Placeholder text during design time development. It's going to be pretty hard to visually arrange a bunch of invisible TextBlocks! What's the standard solution for this?

• Gaining information from nodes of tree

  I am working with the tree data structure and trying to come up with a way to calculate information I can gain from the nodes of the tree. I am wondering if there are any existing techniques which can assign higher numerical importance to a node which appears less frequently at lower level (Distance from the root of the tree) than the same nodes appearance at higher level and high frequency. To give an example, I want to give more significance to node Book, at level 2 appearing once, then at level 3 appearing thrice.   Hi, I'm trying to sort out a result set that gives the 5 closest users sorted by upcoming birthday. This works perfectly until leap years comes into play. For example: May 15th - 96 days left May 15th - 97 days left The top result is a birth at 1987 and the lower is from 1988. u_birth is stored as yyyy-mm-dd. Is there a simple way to sort this problem without having to rewrite the entire query? • mod_rewrite regex help

  HI guys. Im using mod_rewrite to do some redirects on a web site. I want to be able to do the following mySite.com/ - Goto Home mySite.com/foo - Goto redirect.php and redirect acordingly. My redirect rule was RewriteRule (^\w*$) redirect.php?url=$1 [NC] But im oviously missing something because when I go tomySite.com/ I get sent to redirect.php I need a regex that allow lower and upper case letters, as well as underscores but it has to ignore "empty" strings so when I go to mySite.com/ the index file is displayed. Any help? Thanks!

• Can I detect if higher subview has been touched?

  I've got a big UIView that responds to touches, and it's covered with lots of little UIViews that respond differently to touches. Is it possible to touch anywhere on screen and slide around, and have each view know if it's being touched? For example, I put my finger down on the upper left and slide toward the lower right. The touchesBegan/Moved is collected by the baseView. As I pass over itemView1, itemView2, and itemView3, control passes to them. If I lift my finger while over itemView2, it performs itemView2's touchesEnded method. If I lift my finger over none of the items, it performs baseView's touchesEnded. At the moment, if I touch down on baseView, touchEnded is always baseView and the higher itemViews are ignored. Any ideas?

• CFGRID - replace data store or filter on more than one column

  ColdFusion 8 I have a cfgrid that that is based on a query. It is not bound to a cfc function because I want a scrolling grid, not a paged grid (you must supply the page number and page size if you use BIND).. I can figure out how to make it filter on one column by using the following code, but I really need to filter on three columns... grid.getDataSource().filter("OT_MILESTONE",t1); Adding more to the filter string does not do the trick...it ignores anything more than the first pair of values.. so..I thought if I called a function that passes the three values and returned the query results to me, I could replace the Data Store for the grid..but I cannot figure out the syntax to get it to replace. The returned variable for the query has the following format: {"COLUMNS":["SEQ_KEY","ID","OT_MILESTONE"],"DATA":[[63677,"x","y"]]} Any ideas?

  If I understand it right the new ACT ComboBox Control is Bound once to a given Datasource. But the count of the records I want to bind is very large. So I want to load the content of the ComboBox List via Ajax after the user typed in a few charachters. So at page load the combobox list should be empty and if something is typed in the list is loaded with the typed text as search text. • Spring 3 MVC - how to turn a form into a query string?

  I have a simple Spring form that gets bound to a form object on post. The http POST handler does some work, and then needs to redirect to a new URL, passing the form data as querystring parameters. So, assuming I have a form backing object with properties "param1" and "param2", I want to build a string that looks something like this: redirect:/app/new/page?param1=value;param2=value Now, Spring will automatically bind values FROM a querystring or a form post into my form object, but I want to GENERATE a querystring with values taken from the form object. Obviously it's trivial to do this manually but since I'm going to have lots of different form backing objects, is there some built-in facility in Spring to generate a query string from a form object, suitable for building into a URL?   I am using a telerik radgrid so there are around 5 columns each column edittemplate contains a control along with a required field validator and also a property called AllowMultiRowEdit is set to true so i am able to multiple rows in edit mode. If any of the values are cleared the for multiple rows I want only those to be validated on update of that particular row. So i implemented the Grids item data bound event find each and every validator along with the update button and set a unique validation group. The above implementation most times but fails at some time. Is there any other way of going about this ?

  DataGridView gets bound to DataTable. I then try to set some columns' DefaultCellStyle.Alignment to right. It doesn't work. After a bunch of tinkering, it turns out that every single row's DefaultCellStyle.Alignment is set to left and overrides it. DataGridView.DefaultCellStyle or RowsDefaultCellStyle doesn't do anything. Makes sense since a particular row's DefaultCellStyle is more specific but what gives. Why are they all set to something and not NotSet? How do I get rid of it instead of iterating through all rows?

  I have a flex application in which I have a TabNavigator with multiple tabs and a datagrid in each of those tabs. I have bound s single array of data to each grid. What I want to do is to bind each grid with a particular set of data in that array i.e. to distribute array contents among grids based on data type. For example items starting with letter A could be displayed in first grid, B in second, starting with C in third and so on. Hence you can say alphabetically distribute the data on different grids. The problem is that the data will be added randomly by the user. To make one data array for each grid is not an option (due to design restrictions). Any suggestions please? Thanks in advance

  I've been looking at systems such as txtlocal, esendex and clickatell. I need to send out a very large number of messages and ideally would like to go in at a lower level then using systems like these. Does anyone know how these SMS gateways like I've listed work in terms of actually sending out the messages? Will they have agreements with different carriers and be sending them out programmatically? I've tried contacting some UK carriers directly but as of yet haven't had any success getting any information from them.

  I have an MS Access program in use in multiple locations. It connects to MS SQL Server tables, but the server name is different in each location. I am looking for the fastest way to test for the existence of a server. The code takes about one second if the server is available and takes about 8 seconds for each server that is unavailable. I'd like to get both of these lower, if possible, but especially the fail case as this one happens most often.

  Hi, I have a method which returns an array of fixed type objects (let's say MyObject). The method creates a new empty Stack<MyObject>. Then, it does some work and pushes some number of MyObjects to the end of the Stack. Finally, it returns the Stack.ToArray(). It does not change already added items or their properties, nor remove them. The number of elements to add will cost performance. There is no need to sort/order the elements. Is Stack a best thing to use? Or must I switch to Collection or List to ensure better performance and/or lower memory cost?

  Hi guys, I've bound a datagridview to a collection of objects. It's giving me a null reference exception when I try to add a new row to a collection (empty or otherwise) using the gui. More specifically, when there is a write event it does this. How can I override the behavior of the write event and manually add all of the columns contents to the object collection? I could disable the add new row feature and make an add button, but the built in datagridview row add looks so much more slick.
