• SSIS Send Mail Task and ForceExecutionValue Error

  I tried to use the "ForcedExecutionValue" on several Send Mail Tasks and log the execution into a ExecValueVariable so that at the end of the package I can log into a table to say whether the data check is successful or not (by determine whether an email was sent out) I set up a Boolean variable that is accessible at the package level, then set up my Send Mail Task as the screenshot below with Boolean as my ForcedExecutionValueType.  When I run the package, I got the error described below. Just to make sure this is not another issue of SSIS having with Boolean type ( you also can't set variable value from xp_cmdshell of type Boolean), I used variables of types String, Int32, DateTime with the corresponding ForcedExecutionValueType.  The only way to get around this error, was to set my variable to type Object, but then when you try to get the value out later, the Object is null. I didn't spend enough time on this to see whether it's really a bug in SSIS or not, or is this just how Send Mail Task works.  Just want to log the error and will circle back on this later to narrow down the issue some more.  In the meantime, please share if you have run into the same problem.  The current workaround is to attach a script task at the end. Also, need to note 2 existing limitation: Data check needs to be done serially because every check needs to be inner join to a master table.  The master table has all the data in a single XML column and hence need to be retrieved with XQuery (a fundamental design flaw that needs to be changed) The next iteration will be to change this design into a FOR loop and pull out the checking query from a table somewhere with all the info needed for email task, but is being put to the back of the priority. Error Message: Error: 0xC001F009 at CountCheckBetweenODSAndCleanSchema: The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::WasErrorEmailEverSent" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object. • Can't read .cso files but I can read their .hlsl versions?

  Well I've been trying to read a .cso file to use as a shader for a DirectX program I'm currently making. Problem is no matter how I implemented a way to read the file it never worked. And after fidgeting around I discover that it's only the .cso files I can't read. I can read anything else (which means it works) even their .hlsl files. Which is strange because the .hlsl (high level shader language) files are supposed to turn into .cso (compiled shader object) files. What I'm currently doing is: vector<byte> Read(string File){ vector<byte> Text; fstream file(File, ios::in | ios::ate | ios::binary); if(file.is_open()){ Text.resize(file.tellg()); file.seekg(0 , ios::beg); file.read(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&Text[0]), Text.size()); file.close(); } return Text; }; If I then implement it. • Script to recursively grep data from certain files in the directory

  I am making a simple shell script which will minimize the time I spend in searching all directories under a parent directory and grep some things inside some files. My problem though is the part in the if statement. The script should check the current directory for sysconfig.out, grep drive model and dump it to sst-logs.out if it exists, otherwise, change directory to node0 then grep physical memory size from setupsys.out and dump it to sst-logs.out. My problem is, it seems the if then else statement seems not to work as it doesn`t dump any data at all but if i execute grep manually, i do have data. What is wrong with my shell script? Is there any more efficient way in doing this?

  On a Linux or UNIX server this is one of my most frequently used commands. find . -name "*.htm" -exec grep -iH "alter session" {} \; It is an easy way to find a string you know is in a group of files, but don't know or can't remember which file it is in. For the example above, I knew that WebCenter Content sends a bunch of alter session commands to the database when it opens a new database connection. I wanted to find where these were defined and what all the alter session commands were.   I have binary data in my database that I'll have to convert to bitmap at some point. I was thinking whether or not it's appropriate to use a repository and do it there. My consumer, which is a presentation layer, will use this repository.   I have levels of tables (Level1, Level2, Level3, ...) For simplicity, we'll say I have 3 levels. The rows in the higher level tables are parents of lower level table rows. The relationship does not skip levels however. E.g. Row1Level1 is parent of Row3Level2, Row2Level2 is parent of Row4Level3. Level(n-1)'s parent is always be in Level(n). Given these tables with data, I need to come up with a recursive function that generates an XML file to represent the relationship and the data. E.g. <data> <level levelid = 1 rowid=1> <level levelid = 2 rowid=3 /> </level> <level levelid = 2 rowid=2> <level levelid = 3 rowid=4 /> </level> </data> I would like help with coming up with a pseudo-code for this setup.   I'm working on a toy compiler (for some simple language like PL/0) and I have my lexer up and running. At this point I should start working on building the parse tree, but before I start I was wondering: How much information can one gather from just the string of tokens? Here's what I gathered so far: One can already do syntax highlighting having only the list of tokens. Numbers and operators get coloured accordingly and keywords also. Autoformatting (indenting) should also be possible. How? Specify for each token type how many white spaces or new line characters should follow it. Also when you print tokens modify an alignment variable (when the code printer reads "{" increment the alignment variable by 1, and decrement by 1 for "}". Whenever it starts printing on a new line the code printer will align according to this alignment variable) In languages without nested subroutines one can get a complete list of subroutines and their signature. How? Just read what follows after the "procedure" or "function" keyword until you hit the first ")" (this should work fine in a Pascal language with no nested subroutines) In languages like Pascal you can even determine local variables and their types, as they are declared in a special place (ok, you can't handle initialization as well, but you can parse sequences like: "var a, b, c: integer") Detection of recursive functions may also be possible, or even a graph representation of which subroutine calls who. If one can identify the body of a function then one can also search if there are any mentions of other function's names. Gathering statistics about the code, like number of lines, instructions, subroutines EDIT: I clarified why I think some processes are possible. As I read comments and responses I realise that the answer depends very much on the language that I'm parsing.

  I'm wondering would it be considered acceptable: The window class is responsible for drawing data, so it will have a method: Window::draw(const Sprite&); Window::draw(const Rect&); Window::draw(const Triangle&); Window::draw(const Circle&); and all those primitives + sprites would be just public struct. Is this pattern used? Does it have any cons against it's primitives-draw-themself pattern? Are there any other related patterns?

• Character creation using spritesheets

  I am currently creating a 2D fighting game and have implemented a system where upon starting a new game, the player is presented with the option to create a custom character. I have a set of string arrays set with values that correspond to hair, headgear, chest, lower body and shoes. When done selecting a variety of items from the lists, a code is generated based off the index of each item (i.e 01123), which is then used to assign the correct Spritesheet to the player character. This has already presented a lot of work as I have had to create quite a few spreadsheets based of possible combinations, but I am now looking at a massive amount of work to implement each variation. I have started to look into setting layers for each item to reduce workload, but I am also looking at having different stances for the character - Depending on the currently equipped weapon - so this may present a lot of work either way. My question is, do I have any alternatives or am I stuck creating masses of Spritesheets to cover all combinations? As a side note, how much impact will assigning layered items have on overall performance?

• How-to get the binding for a tab in the Dynamic Tab Shell Template

  The Dynamic Tab Shell template does expose a method on the Tab.java class that allows you to get access to the ADF binding container for a tab. At least in theory this works, because in practice this call always returns a null value (a bug is filed for this). To work around the problem, you can use code similar to the following to get the ADF binding for a specific tab DCBindingContainer currentBinding = (DCBindingContainer) BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry(); DCBindingContainer templateBinding = (DCBindingContainer)currentBinding.get("ptb1"); DCBindingContainer tabBinding= (DCBindingContainer)templateBinding.get("r"+0);  In the code line above, the tabBinding variable will hold the binding reference to the first tab in the dynamic tab shell template. Note that the tab doesn't need to be visible for this (which has to do with how the template works).  "ptb1" is the template reference name in the PageDef file (Executable section) of the template consumer view. Check this string in your page before using this code. If it differs, change it also in the code above. "r0" is the binding reference of the first tab in the template. Te last tab is referenced by "r14".

  I have a table with col1 id int, col2 as varchar (comma separated values) and column 3 for assigning group to them. Table looks like col1 col2 group .............................. 1 2,3,4 2 5,6 3 1,2,5 4 7,8 5 11,3 6 22,8 This is only the sample of real data, now I have to assign a group no to them in such a way that output looks like col1 col2 group .............................. 1 2,3,4 1 2 5,6 1 3 1,2,5 1 4 7,8 2 5 11,3 1 6 22,8 2 The logic for assigning group no is that every similar comma separated value of string in col2 have to be same group no as every where in col2 where '2' is there it has to be same group no but the complication is that 2,3,4 are together so they all three int value if found in any where in col2 will be assigned same group. The major part is 2,3,4 and 1,2,5 both in col2 have 2 so all int 1,2,3,4,5 have to assign same group no. Tried store procedure with match against on col2 but not getting desired result Most imp (I can't use normalization, because I can't afford to make new table from my original table which have millions of records), even normalization is not helpful in my context. • Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools Screencast

  Microsoft just released the Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools extension and it is awesome. A summary of all the features can be found here and it is available in the Visual Studio Gallery here. There are a bunch of great features but, in my opinion, the best one is the replacement for the Add Reference dialog. This gives sub-string search capabilities as well as the ability to add multiple references without having to continually re-open the dialog. For this feature alone, you should install the Pro Power Tools right now. There are a few blogs posts that do a good job describing all the features but what I wanted to do here was to post a quick screencast (7 minutes) that shows the features that I think are really cool. I show most (but not all) of the features focusing on the ones I think are the best. • iOS chat application design, sending/relaying the message over to the end user

  I have a design question. Let us say you were tasked with building a chat application, specifically for iOS (iOS Chat Application). For simplicity let us say you can only chat with one person at a time (no group chat functionality). How then can you achieve sending a message directly to an end user from phone A to phone B? Obviously there is a web service layer with some API calls. One of the API calls available will be startChat(). After starting a chat, when you send a message, you make another async call, let us call it sendMessage() and pass in a string with your message. Once it goes to the web service layer, the message gets stored in a database. Here is where I am currently stuck. After the message gets sent to the web service layer, how do we then achieve sending/relaying the message over to the end user? Should the web server send out a message to the end user and notify them, or should each client call a receiveMessage() method periodically, and if the server side has some info for them it can then respond with that info? Finally, how can we handle the case in which the user you are trying to send a message to is offline? How can we make sure the end user gets the packet when he moves back to an area with signal?

• SPUtility.SendMail and the 2048 Character Limit

  We were in the middle of testing a web part responsible for gathering information from visitors to our Client's website and emailing it to someone responsible for responding to the request.  During testing, however, it was brought to our attention that the message was cutting off at 2048 characters.  Now, 2048 is one of those numbers that is usually indicative of some computational limit, but I was hopeful that Microsoft had thought through the possibility of emailing more than 2048 characters from SharePoint.  Luckily I was right. and wrong. As it turns out, SPUtility.SendMail is not limited to any specific character limit as far as I can tell.  However, each LINE of text that you send via SendMail cannot exceed 2048 characters.  Since we were sending an HTML email it was constructed entirely without line breaks, far exceeding the 2048 character limit and ultimately helping to educate me about this obscure technical limitation whose only benefit thus far is offering me something to rant about on my blog.  The fix is simple, just put in a carriage return and a line break often enough to avoid going past the 2048 character limit.  I'm sure someone can present a great technical reason for the 2048 character limit, but it seems fairly arbitrary since the "\r\n" that got appended to the string are ultimately just characters too.
