  • Upgrading Ubuntu to 9.04 breaks ATI video card driver, VESA and ati/radeon drivers

    I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04, and it not only broke the ATI proprietary fglrx driver, but also the ability to use the VESA or open-source ati or radeon drivers. I have an ATI RV610 which is an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. I have Linux Kernel 2.6.27-14-generic and 2.6.28-13-generic. With fglrx, vesa, ati and radeon, the Xserver hangs the machine as soon as it starts by invoking X or startx, which is seen by observing that caps lock doesn't work. There's nothing useful in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, no errors at all. This is with either kernel. When I download a new proprietary driver from ATI, I install it successfully on kernel 2.6.27, and it doesn't hang when X starts up, but it just shows a blank screen and does nothing. I also can't CTRL+ALT+Backspace out of X at this point. In all the years I've used ATI's Linux drivers, this has happened almost every time I've upgraded my kernel, but it's been fixable with much effort. This time I'm really stuck. Does anyone know how to fix these problems?

  • Bulk convert PNG-24 to PNG-8 files with best quality

    Hi, Can anybody recommend a good method of bulk converting a large amount of PNG-24 files to PNG-8 with as little loss of quality as possible and maintaining transparency? I've tried ImageMagick but the resulting images weren't quite as crisp quality as I'd like. Using Paint.NET I was able to achieve far better results, but I can't bulk process with this tool as far as I know. The settings I used with ImageMagick in case there's better options to use: convert file.png -depth 4 file-output.png I've also been playing with OptiPNG, but I haven't discovered a was of making sure the output images are PNG-8.   • Master Reset iPhone - How?

    Actually - I had a problem with my iPhone. My iphone battery was down & it was switched off. I plugged in it for charging, but after some time - iPhone had a complete white screen. I don't know what actually had happened. Every thing was working perfectly. means suppose I press lock ( button on top-right side ) it sounds that iphone is locked. when I pressed home button & slide on bottom of the screen - it sounds that iphone is unlocked - but the only problem was - screen remains "white" only. someone told me - it needs master reset. I went to an engineer & he just master reset to iPhone. I am wondering how an iPhone can be master reset ? can you guide me about it ? Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge. Sagar

  • Windows XP update not working

    I have a problem with XP updating. It hangs when I try to search for updates on the website. But the automatic updates still work. And it's running IE6, so I'm trying to update to IE8, hoping that will fix the problems with the website. But when installing IE8 it just hangs at Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP And if I try to install it manually, it hangs when installing the updates for IE8. So looking at these logs, is there anything going wrong with the update process?   • How to make 7zip faster

    I normally use winRAR over 7Zip simply because its faster and only a little less efficient with compression. I did a few tests on different filetypes and sizes comparing the 7zip and winRAR default settings on their normal compression and their best compression, and in a lot of cases winRAR was 50% faster and in some it was actually 100% faster. But, I do like FOSS more. So here are my questions: Is there a way to make 7zip speed up? I'd like it to at least be on par with rar's speed Is there a way to make recovery segments in 7zip like you can in rar? I didn't see any, but I guess it could be a command line thing. I tested winrar and 7zip using the latest stable version of each (4.something with 7zip). Is the 9.x beta release noticeably faster at compression? I'm talking about faster at a comparable setting in WinRAR, not just lowering to bare minimum compression. If it matters, I use a quad core intel i7 720 (1.6ghz)/(2.8ghz) with 4gb DDR3 ram, and the 64-bit version of 7zip.

    My sysadmin recently installed a new version of GCC, in /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3. I tested it as follows: mike@canon:~$ cat test.c int main(){ return 0; } mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3/libexec/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/cc1: error while loading shared libraries: libmpfr.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After informing my sysadmin about this, he said to add /lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib:/lusr/opt/gmp-4.3.2/lib to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH. After doing this, I get the following error: mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" First, my sysadmin wasn't entirely sure this was the best workaround(though he did say it worked for him...), so is there a better solution?   • SATA-II motherboard and drives but only connected at SATA-I

    I have an Abit AB9 QuadGT motherboard which has a SATA-II controller. Connected to it I have a Kingston SSDNow V Series 64GB as boot drive and a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 as a data drive. I also have 2 x Optiarc AD-7170S DVD burners attached by SATA. Both SSD and HDD are SATA-II and the optical drives are SATA-I. I have just run CrystalDiskInfo and this is reporting that both SSD and HDD are connected at SATA-I (1.5 Gbps), not SATA-II (3.0 Gbps). I have the BIOS set up to use SATA drives in IDE mode. So a few questions: Is CrystalDiskInfo reporting correctly? Are the optical drives causing the SSD & HDD to connect at the slower rate? Is there any setting to force the SSD & HDD to use SATA-II? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Assuming that free space advice for ZEVO will not differ from advice for other modern implementations of ZFS … Question Please, what percentages or amounts of free space are advisable for hard disk drives of the following sizes? 640 GB 2 TB Thoughts A standard answer for modern implementations of ZFS might be "no more than 96 percent full". However if apply that to (say) a single-disk 640 GB dataset where some of the files most commonly used (by VirtualBox) are larger than 15 GB each, then I guess that blocks for those files will become sub optimally spread across the platters with around 26 GB free. I read that in most cases, fragmentation and defragmentation should not be a concern with ZFS. Sill, I like the mental picture of most fragments of a large .vdi in reasonably close proximity to each other. (Do features of ZFS make that wish for proximity too old-fashioned?) Side note: there might arise the question of how to optimise performance after a threshold is 'broken'. If it arises, I'll keep it separate. Background On a 640 GB StoreJet Transcend (product ID 0x2329) in the past I probably went beyond an advisable threshold. Currently the largest file is around 17 GB –  – and I doubt that any .vdi or other file on this disk will grow beyond 40 GB. (Ignore the purple masses, those are bundles of 8 MB band files.) Without HFS Plus: the thresholds of twenty, ten and five percent that I associate with Mobile Time Machine file system need not apply. I currently use ZEVO Community Edition 1.1.1 with Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8.2, but I'd like answers to be not too version-specific. (2010-03-11) … So to solve this problem, what went in 2010/Q1 software release is multifold. The most important thing is: we increased the threshold at which we switched from 'first fit' (go fast) to 'best fit' (pack tight) from 70% full to 96% full. With TB drives, each slab is at least 5GB and 4% is still 200MB plenty of space and no need to do anything radical before that. This gave us the biggest bang. Second, instead of trying to reuse the same primary slabs until it failed an allocation we decided to stop giving the primary slab this preferential threatment as soon as the biggest allocation that could be satisfied by a slab was down to 128K (metaslab_df_alloc_threshold). At that point we were ready to switch to another slab that had more free space. We also decided to reduce the SMO bonus. Before, a slab that was 50% empty was preferred over slabs that had never been used. In order to foster more write aggregation, we reduced the threshold to 33% empty. This means that a random write workload now spread to more slabs where each one will have larger amount of free space leading to more write aggregation. Finally we also saw that slab loading was contributing to lower performance and implemented a slab prefetch mechanism to reduce down time associated with that operation.     I'm trying to install VPN client Shrew, in the process of installation an error occurs. Error 0x800f0203: Couldn't install the network component. It occurs when the installer tries to execute C:\Program Files\ShrewSoft\VPN Client\netcfg.exe -add service vflt C:\Program Files\ShrewSoft\VPN Client\drivers\vfilter.inf Anti-virus, firewall, etc. - are disabled. Run from administrator. Installing vfilter.inf in manual mode, but it's nowhere leads. A similar situation with the Cisco VPN client. Need a VPN client supports a group authorization, and import the settings from pcf format. I'll be glad to any advice!

    Hi, How do I change the default screensaver in Mac OS X using shell. I am writing a script to customize computers that I need to distribute. In particular I would like them all to have the same default screensaver. How could I change this in a script? So far I have done the following: I have a com.apple.screensaver.default.plist file with the screensaver settings I want in it, and in the script I copy it to /Users/guest/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.${UUID}.plist where UUID is the relevant value. I have modified /System/Library/Frameworks/Screensaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist to have the screensaver I want as the default settings. But when I open Screensaver settings in System Preferences after running the script, the default screensaver is Flurry! What can I do to make this work? Thanks, ChilisWorld

  • Using "offline files sync" to sync with a local resource [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Which is the best application to Sync two folders? I have been trying get my machine (XP-Pro SP3) to sync files to a local USB drive in the same way as I can with mapped network drives. I particularly want to the sync to happen automatically when the USB is connected - in the same way that Off-line files will sync when the network drive comes on line. I can get a folder on the USB mounted as a network drive, but cannot get XP to offer the off-line files functionality. I have tried MS's SyncToy - it works as advertised, and will do scheduled and ad-hoc sync's, but does not seem to offer automatic syncs. I suspect I could do this by plugging my USB into another machine on my network - but that seems heavy handed. All insight appreciated - If you know this cannot be done please say so.

    Ok, I'm stuck using outlook in the office (but they let me use 2010 betas which are awsome, btw) and one thing I'll allways rant about outlook in any version is that when I press the X button it goes away. I mean, I know the X button is supposed to close the app, it's the standard and all that, but email is (sadly) very critical, as well as meeting requests and reminders, outlook should not be closed so freaking easily. I mean, Live Messenger is not so critical but it has this feature built in and on by default. Is there a way to close outlook to the tray, addons, vba, settings, reghack, anything? I know there is minimize to tray and I've been searching the web but could not find anything usefull.

  • Windows 7 random black screen when idle

    Occasionally, when I'm away from my computer for about 5 minutes, the computer screen will go black and all USB devices (keyboard/mouse) will lose power. Attempting to move the mouse or pressing keys does not 'wake up' the computer. This only started happening a few days ago but I'm not sure what changes I did could have caused this and I uninstalled programs (one by one) I installed before it started happening, but still having the same issue. The one thing I noticed different about my computer since it started happening is i've been getting random survey popups from www.insightexpress.com. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials scan, it picked up some Java related malware, I removed it but still the same issue. I'm running MBAM right now and will run SAS after.

  • Accessing network shares on Windows7 via SonicWall VPN client

    I'm running Windows7 x64 (fully patched) and the SonicWall 4.2.6.0305 client (64-bit, claims to support Windows7). I can login to the VPN and access network resources (eg SSH to a machine that lives behind the VPN). However I cannot seem to be able to access shared filesystems. Windows is refusing to do discovery on the VPN network. I suspect part of the problem is Windows persistently considers the VPN connection to be a 'public network'. Normally, you can open the network and sharing center and modify this setting, however it does not give me a choice for the VPN. So I did the expedient thing and turned on file sharing for public networks. I also disabled the Windows firewall for good measure. Still no luck. I can access the server directly by putting \\192.168.1.240 in the taskbar, which brings up the list of shares on the server. However, trying to open any of the shares simply tells me "Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.240\share You do not have permission to access ..."; it never asks for a domain password. I also tried Windows7 native VPN functionality - it couldn't successfully connect to the VPN at all. I suspect this is because SonicWall is using some obnoxious special/undocumented authentication system; I had similar problems trying to connect on Linux with the normal IPsec tools there. What magical invocation or control panel option am I missing that will let this work? Are there any reasonable debugging strategies? I'm feeling quite frustrated at Windows tendency to not give me much useful information that might let me understand what it is trying to do and what is going wrong.
