• mysql inserts & updates optimized

  This is an optimization question, mostly. I have many forms on my sites that do simple Inserts and Updates. (Nothing complicated) But, several of the form's input fields are not necessary and may be left empty. (again, nothing complicated) However, my SQL query will have all columns in the Statement. My question, is it best to optimize the Inserts/Update queries appropriately? And only apply the columns that are changed into the query? We all hear that we shouldn't use the "SELECT *" query, unless it's absolutely needed for displaying all columns. But what about Inserts & Updates? Hope this makes sense. I'm sure any amount of optimization is acceptable. But I never really hear about this, specifically, from anyone.

• What should be contained in a global Subversion ignore pattern for Visual Studio 2010?

  After installing and using Visual Studio 2010, I'm seeing some newer file types (at least with C++ projects ... don't know about the other types) as compared to 2008. e.g. .sdf, .opensdf, which I guess are the replacement for ncb files with Intellisense info stored in SQL Server Compact files? I also notice .log files are generated, which appear to be build logs. Given this, what's safe to add to my global ignore pattern? Off the bat, I'd assume .sdf, .opensdf, but what else?

  It is said to be a good habit to close all JDBC resources after usage. But if I have the following code, is it necessary to close the Resultset and the Statement? • Looking for alternatives to the database project.

  I've a fairly large database project which contains nine databases and one database with a fairly large schema. This project takes a large amount of time to build and I'm about to pull my hair out. We'd like to keep our database source controlled, but having a hard getting the other devs to use the project and build the database project before checking in just because it takes so long to build. It is seriously crippling our work so I'm look for alternatives. Maybe something can be done with Redgate's SQL Compare? I think maybe the only drawback here is that it doesn't validate syntax? Anyone's thoughts/suggestions would be most appreciated.

• php date() stuck

  I am getting the date from my mysql database and that date is correct but when I use the date() function the minute part is stuck a 6 minutes. My mysql is returning 2010-06-15 09:59:18 Then in php I use this code: date('M d,Y H:m A',strtotime($row[4])) ** $row[4] is from my while loop ** When I echo this out I get: Jun 15,2010 9:06 AM I also have tried converting it to unix timestamp in my sql query, does the same thing. I noticed that the hours work and the seconds work but the minutes are stuck at 6. Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

  Hello, I have a question related to correct handling of returns of the DAO library I'm writing for one project. This library probably is going to be used by another people and I want to do it correctly. So I would like to know, how I should deal with return statements of the functions of my DAO. Example 1 I have function to getCustomer which should return String. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty string or throw some kind of Exception? Example 2 I have function getCutomerList which return ArrayList. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty ArrayList or throw some Exception? Example 3 Some sql exception was detected, what should I do: throw exception or do try..catch of the block where it can occur? What is the "good" practice or "best" practice to apply in my case? • Would you store binary data in database or in file system?

  This is a question which has been asked before (large-text-and-images-in-sql) but mainly for data which will be changed. In my case the data will be stored and never changed. Just seems sensible to keep everything together. Are there any reasons why I should not store static binary data in a database? Assuming it is a sensible thing to do, are there any advantages to storing such data in separate tables? (You might begin to realise now that I'm not a DB expert...) Clarify: There will probably be no more than 10-20 users but these will be in the US and in the UK. The binary data will have to be transfered in any case.

  Is there a possibility to set size of Report to fit on one page pragmatically. In excel there is option for page Scaling where We can set how many pages by tall and by wide is going to be printed . Does exists something analog in SSRS2008 ? I am using Sql Report Server 2008 and Ill try to do that by exporting report to excel and after that to set numbers of pages using ASP and C#. But the bad thing that I do not have office system installed on my server, and If I deploy code over visual studio project for Excel worksheet I am afraid that is not going to work on my server. Subquestion Are there any .NET library for Excel which implement the needed function for page scaling that can work without Office installed on target server.

  I'm looking for a database where multiple users can contribute and commit new data; other users can then pull that data into their own database repository, all in a git-like manner. A transcriptional database, if you like; does such a thing exist? My current thinking is to dump the database to a single file as SQL, but that could well get unwieldy once it is of any size. Another option is to dump the database and use the filesystem, but again it gets unwieldy once of any size.

  Hey Everyone, I have limited SQL background, basically a small amount of manipulation through HTML and mostly with pre-existing databases. What I am trying to do is set up a database that will store time information for bus routes. So basically I have different routes with stops for each route and then a list of times that the bus arrives at each stop. Here is an example of a table of times from their website: Link.   I had stored procedure MySPOld in Sybase db. I created new sp MySP. This new sp returns data while executed from Sybase Sql Advantage. But not returning the data when called from VBA - Excel 2003 (EOF property of recordset is True). Here is my code.. • how to configure hibernate not to update @Version on each access to entity

  i have a simple query that returns an entity, and when i look at hibernate SQL output i see that when i execute this query hibernate updates the @Version field (on each consecutive read the @version field is updated). i dont modify anything in the entity i fetch, and i dont pass is as an argument to either persist or merge. this effectively means every read i make turns into a read+write. i've tried setting the lock mode t oboth NONE (jpa 2) and READ (jpa 1) to no avail. is there any way to achieve this? if so, is there any way to set this as the default behavior in persistence.xml in some way ? im using jpa2 over hibernate 3.6

  Hi, I'd like to make a textbox that accepts only numbers, but not integer, but rather double. I've read here about e.Handled = Not Char.IsDigit(e.KeyChar) and it works, but again, it can be used only for integer, since it declines decimal point. Another thing I've read here is If Not Double.TryParse(TextBox2.Text, value) Then .... and it would work fine, except that it allows only decimal comma instead of point. I don't know whether it's because of my location settings (Hungary, we use commas instead of points), but I don't have any other idea how to solve my problem, and the SQL server I send my data uses decimal point.   Hi All, I've built my application in .net and sql server 2008. Having looking for a hosting soultion I stumpled upon windows azure. I saw that currently its only availabe in the US. Can I use the service if I live outside of the US? If I upload my website up there and people try entering, will people from outside of the US be blocked?   I've got a web page which is implementing cookie based ASPNET Forms Authentication. Once the user has logged in the page, he can edit some information using a form which is created using a partialview and returned to him as a dialog for editing. The action linked to the partial view is decorated as follows: [HttpGet] [OutputCache(Duration = 0, VaryByParam = "None")] [Authorize(Roles = "test")] public ActionResult changeTripInfo(int tripID, bool ovride=false) { ... } The problem i am experiencing is the latency between the request and the time when the dialog is shown to the user: time ranges between 800 and 1100 ms which is not justified by the complexity of the form. Investigating with Glimpse turns out that the time to process the AuthorizeAttribute (see snip) sums up to at least 650 ms which is troubling me. Looking at the Sql server log, the call which checks the user roles takes, as expected, virtually nothing (duration 0). How can I reduce this time? Am I missing some optimization?

We are facing a problem of coordination between file system and database while we are uploading a file and also in case of deleting a file. First we create a reference in the database or store files on file system. The problem is that if I create a reference in the database first and then store a file on file system, but while storing files on the file system any type of error occur, then the reference for that file is created in the database but no file data exist on the file system. • Typed DataSet connection - required to have one in the .xsd file?

  In the .xsd file for a typed DataSet in .NET, there's a <Connections> section that contains a list of any data connections I've used to set up the DataTables and TableAdapters. There are times when I'd prefer not to have those there. For instance, sometimes I prefer to pass in a connection string to a custom constructor and use that rather than look for one in settings, .config, etc. But it seems like if I remove the connection strings from that section (leaving it empty), or remove the section entirely, the DataSet code-generation tool freaks out. Whereas if I don't remove them, the DataSet gripes when I put it in a different project because it can't find the settings for those connection strings. Is there any way I can tell a typed DataSet not to worry about any connections? (Obviously I'll have to give it a connection if I change any TableAdapter SQL or stored procs, but that should be my problem.)

  Hi,be m I am working on an application which has below requiements - 1. Download a ZIP file from a server. 2. Uncompress the ZIP file, get the content (which is in XML format) from this file into a String. 3. Pass this content into another method for parsing and further processing. Now, my concerns here is the XML file may be of Huge size say like '100MB', and my JVM has memory of only 512 MB, so how can I get this content into Chunks and pass for Parsing and then insert the data into PL/SQL tables. Since there can be multiple requests running at the same time and considering 512MB of memory what will be the best possible to process this. How I can get the data into Chunks and pass it as Stream for XML parsing. I googled on this, but didnt find any implementation. :( Thanks,

• Anyway to find out the current Windows is in lock mode?

  I have a windows application written in VS 2005. The application makes queries against to sql database in a timer cycle every 2 minutes. If there any data changes, the window will be refreshed with new data. If the user leaves the window, the windows will be automatically locked after a while. There is no sense to keep querying data in ever 2 minutes when the windows is locked; therefore I would like to stop the query when lock is on so that the network data trafic will be reduced and also saves the current windows resources such as memory and CPUs. I am not sure if there is any way to find out the current windows is locked? Not sure if there is any Windows APIs for this purpose if no .Net classes available? My project is in .Net 2.0 and all users are in Windows XP.

• MySQL 5 in MySQL 4 compatible mode for one database?

  In a recent project, I have to maintain some PHP code. I set up a development server and installed MySQL, Apache, PHP, ..etc. The program is terminated with an error: Unknown column _ _ _ in 'on clause' Cannot select .... Google shows that it's a change of syntax around JOINs, parentheses are needed. As you may imagine, fixing all that PHP SQL strings will be the last resort. _< Is is possible to config MySQL 5 to run at MySQL 4 compatible mode? Or even better, for only one database? Thanks! p.s. Since we are going to host the code on a new production server (MySQL 5 on a CentOS box), the chance to install MySQL 4 on the new server might be slim.

• SQlite/Firebird: Does any of them support multiple concurrent write access ?

  Question: I currently store ASP.net application data in XML files. Now the problem is I have asynchronous operations, which means I ran into the problem of simultanous write access on a XML file... Now, I'm considering moving to an embedded database to solve the issue. I'm currently considering SQlite and embeddable Firebird. I'm not sure however if SQlite or Firebird can handle multiple concurrent write access. And I certainly don't want the same problem again. Anybody knows ? SQlite certainly is better known, but which one is better - SQlite or Firebird ? I tend to say Firebird, but I don't really know. No MS-Access or MS-SQL-express recommodations please, I'm a sane person.
