- by Andriane

• From NaN to Infinity...and Beyond!

It is hard to believe that it was once possible to corrupt a SQL Server Database by storing perfectly normal data values into a table; but it is true. When one then tried to query this data; the values were unsupported and so data pages containing them were flagged as being corrupt....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Visual Studio & TFS 11 – List of extensions and upgrades

- by terje
This post is a list of the extensions I recommend for use with Visual Studio 11. It’s coming up all the time – what to install, where are the download sites, last version, etc etc, and thus I thought it better to post it here and keep it updated. The basics are Visual Studio 11 connected to a Team Foundation Server 11. Note that we now are at Beta time, and that also many live in a side-by-side environment with Visual Studio 2010. The side-by-side is supported by VS 11. However, if you installed a component supporting VS11 before you installed VS11, then you need to reinstall it. The VSIX installer will understand that it is to apply those only for VS11, and will not touch – nor remove – the same for VS2010. A good example here is the Power Commands. The list is more or less in priority order. The focus is to get a setup which can be used for a complete coding experience for the whole ALM process. The list of course reflects what I use for my work , so it is by no means complete, and for some of the tools there are equally useful alternatives. Many components have not yet arrived with VS11 support. I will add them as they arrive. The components directly associated with Visual Studio from Microsoft should be common, see the Microsoft column. If you still need the VS2010 extensions, here they are: The extensions for VS 2010. Components ready for VS 11, both upgrades and new ones Product Notes Latest Version License Applicable to Microsoft TFS Power Tools Beta 111 Side-by-side with TFS 2010 should work, but remove the Shell Extension from the TFS 2010 power tool first. • VOTE by 20 June for OpenWorld Talk on OWB with Non-Oracle Sources

- by antonio romero
OWB/ODI Linkedin Group member Suraj Bang has offered a topic through OpenWorld 2010 Suggest-a-Session at Oracle Mix: Extend ETL to Heterogeneous and Unstructured Data Sources with OWB 11gR2 To vote for this talk to appear, click through to: http://bit.ly/owb_km_openworld and click on the "Vote" button. Abstract follows: Beyond basic Oracle-to-Oracle ETL, data warehousing customers need to integrate data from multiple data sources spanning multiple database vendors, file formats(csv, xml, html) and unstructured data sources like pdf's and log files. This session describes experiences extending OWB 11gR2 to extract data from Postgres, SQL Server, MySQL and Sybase, PDF documents, and more for a major banking client's data warehousing project supporting IT operations. This included metadata extraction, custom knowledge module-based ETL and replacing ad-hoc perl and java extraction code with a manageable ETL solution built on OWB's extensible plaform. Note: You must vote for at least two other talks for your vote to count, so if you haven’t already picked your three, also consider: Case Study: Real-Time data warehousing and fraud detection with Oracle 11gR2.

• Best C# database communication technique

- by user65439
A few days ago I read a reply to a question where people said that the days of writing queries within your c# code are long gone. I'm not sure what the specific person meant with the comment but it got me thinking. At the company I'm currently working at we maintain an assembly containing all the queries to the database (let's call it Queries), this assembly is reference by a QueryService (Retrieve the correct queries) assembly which in turn is referenced by a UnitOfWork assembly (The database connector classes, we have different connector classes for SQL, MySQL etc.). We use these three assemblies to perform operations on our database and all queries/commands are written in our C# code. Is there a better way to communicate with the database and is there a better way to communicate with different database types?

• Video Training Courses for Linux/Ubuntu?

- by Anil
I'm a software developer with more than 15 years of experience on Windows platform, focused on C#/.NET/SQL Server stack. Recently I decided to explore Linux and learn a new development technology stack which is completely unrelated to Microsoft. After a bit of (re)search/reading I picked Ubuntu as my starting point. As I'm really a Pluralsight addict, preferring video courses as a starting point for learning new stuff, I wanted to ask if there are any decent video courses for Linux generally or Ubuntu focused ones? Basically I'm searching for general explanation of OS structure, a bit of system administration, and maybe some considerations for development on Linux system.

• Great Discussion of ETL and ELT Tooling in TDWI Linkedin Group

- by antonio romero
All, There’s a great discussion of ETL and ELT tooling going on in the official TDWI Linkedin group, under the heading “How Sustainable is SQL for ETL?” It delves into a wide range of topics: The pros and cons of handcoding vs. using tools to design ETL ETL (with separate transformation engines) vs. ELT (transforms in the database) and push-down solutions The future of ETL and data warehousing products A number of community members (of varying affiliations) have kept this conversation going for many months, and are learning from each other as they go. So check it out… Also, while you’re on Linkedin, join the Oracle ETL/Data Integration Linkedin group (for both OWB and ODI users), which recently passed the 2000 member mark.

• How should calculations be handled in a document database

- by Morten
Ok, so I have a program that basically logs errors into a nosql database. Right now there is just a single model for an error and its stored as a document in the nosql database. Basically I want to summarize across different errors and produce a summary of the "types" of errors that occured. Traditionally in a SQL database the this normalization would work with groupings, sums and averages but in a NoSQL database I assume I need to use mapreduce. My current model seems unfit for the task, how should I change the way I store "models" in order to make statistical analysis easy? Would a NoSQL database even be the right tool for this type of problem? I'm storing things in Google AppEngine's BigTable, so there are some limitations to think of as well.

• How do I explain to HR that my work experience is relevant even if it doesn't match the keywords in the job description?

- by Dmitri
I am looking at a job with a great company and in a field that I really want to be in. Unfortunalty, what they want is someone with "experience with ASP (VB), T-SQL in a production environment." But I've never done anything except with FOSS tools: C, Ruby(straight and RoR), Perl, MySQL, et c. I'm thinking that I could probably pick up VB without much trouble (I took a class that used it on college, was impressed at how easy it was to construct Windows UIs, but I've never needed it) Is there any way that I can demonstrate that my experience is similar? What would equivalent experience be in the FOSS world?

• AWS EC2 Oracle RDB connection to Oracle Database Instance

- by llaszews
Provisioning my Oracle database instance to AWS EC2 RDB was easy. Just a few clicks! However, getting my connection to my Oracle cloud database was not as easy. A couple things that are not obvious (using Oracle SQL Developer): 1. Need to set up a database security group. 2. Need to use end point for the host name. This video is the best one on the internet to explain both points: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocFURuX0eEw

• Working as an entry .Net Developer in the USA [closed]

- by Abdullah
I just have a question about .net entry level jobs in VA. I am a master degree student in field of software engineering but I am graduated from department of physics. I decided to work on Java first, but I have changed my mind because I don't have any Java programming background except Java class in master degree so I decided to work on C# because it was easy to me to work with Visual Studio and it's fun to me to work with SQL database and HTML stuffs. And I am a member of a IT consultant company in Reston where I took course from there about .net and I created online recruitment system for their web site. Now I am applying for CPT (internship) but I didn't work in a company as a .net developer so I don't have experience. Here is my question. If I get CPT and find a job, what do software companies want from an entry level .net developer? and what do they ask as interview questions?

• Visual NHibernate Update

- by Ricardo Peres
I have previously talked about Visual NHibernate. It has grown since last time, now offering support for multiple databases (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Firebird), generates projects from existing databases or from existing Visual Studio projects and produces XML or Fluent mappings, to name just a few. To me it is by far the most interesting tools for working with NHibernate I know of (granted, I haven't tried NHibernate Profiler). For a limited period, Slyce Software is offering a 30% discount, until the final version is released, so you may want to have a look. Please note that I am in no way related to Slyce, but made some feature requests which have been implemented (thanks, Gareth!).
