• centos dedicated Server unresponsive for the first time

  server was unresponsive for an hour so i rebooted it and checked /var/log/messages and found this. can anybody point out whats wrong ? • Can't log in using second domain controller when first DC is unreachable

  Hi, We're a small web development company. Our domain has two DCs: a main one (BEEHIVE, 192.168.3.20) in the datacenter and a second one (SPHERE2, 10.0.66.19) in the office. The office is connected to the datacenter via a VPN. We recently had a brief network outage in the office. During this outage, we weren't able to access the domain from our office machines. I had hoped that they would fail over to the DC in the office, but that didn't happen. So I'm trying to figure out why. I'm not an expert on Active Directory so maybe I'm missing something obvious. Both domain controllers are running a DNS server. Each office workstation is configured to use the datacenter DC as its primary DNS server, and the office DC as its secondary: DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.3.20 10.0.66.19 Both DNS servers are working, and both domain controllers are working (at least, I can connect to them both using AD Users + Computers). • How to rename database without first stopping SQL instance to flush connections

  Is there a way to force a database into single user mode so a script can be run to rename databases? I find I have to Restart the instance of SQL (to force off any connections from a web app, etc.) and then I can run this script: USE master go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", true go sp_dboption StagingMDS, "single user", true go sp_renamedb MDS, LastMonthMDS go sp_renamedb StagingMDS, MDS go sp_dboption LastMonthMDS, "single user", false go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", false go After this script runs, I can restart IIS for my web app and it can connect to the new production database. All the above works well and we've been doing this for years but now we've upgraded to SQL 2008 and the SQL2008 instance also hosts other databases that support other web apps. So, rather than using a Restart of the whole SQL instance to enable subsequent single-user mode on 2 databases, is there a less intrusive way of accomplishing this? Thanks.

• First web server questions

  Hi there, Just looking for some help/suggestions with this. I require my own server for an upcoming project that will be hosting users websites. I want to build a control panel the user can log into and modify their website which will be stored elsewhere on the server. This all seems easy enough, It's just managing domains and emails that confuse me. What should I look for to manage domain names and point them to the correct website and also what would be the best way to manage email accounts/set up new ones etc. I want to avoid cPanel/WHM if possible, I'm looking to control most things through the control panel I will be building. So any suggestions on this would be useful as well, as I will be wanting to add email accounts through php (Can be done using a shell I assume?). I will also be wanting to measure bandwidth used on the websites contained in each users directory, any suggestions on making this possible? I'm really looking for some suggestions on what software to use to set this up, any advice would be really helpful! Thanks, Graeme

• Removing demo of a program when it insists that the full version be removed first

  I have a program that i both recently installed the demo for, and just installed the full version of. When i try to uninstall the demo, it says that an existing version of the program was found at the full program's path, and must be removed before the installer can be launched. I just want to uninstall the demo; is there any way without removing the full version of the software? (if it matters, it's Sins of a Solar Empire, but i'm hoping it won't get closed as that's merely incidental)

• Connecting to a computer using Remote Desktop does not work first time

  Hi all, I'm having a weird sort of problem with Remote desktop and that too, only on one machine. If I boot up this machine, and then try to Remote desktop into it, it does not work.( I get the following error: The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator. ) But if I physically log into it & then log out, and then try to Remote desktop into it, it works flawlessly. The problematic machine is Xp 64 Bit, but other systems with Xp 64 Bit work fine. Any Ideas on how to solve this?

After he logs in with this password, account is fully created and activated/unlocked and the user is asked/forced to change the pass for a new one.

• Batch Script to Trim lines in text to first 30 or 50 characters only

  I am now new to scripts but i find it really difficult understanding "for" command (especially with that tokens and delimiters etc) . Saying so, i think that for command can be used to do what i am doing. If its not and there is an easier way, ignore my ignorance :( Say i have multiple lines in a text file abc.txt with each line starting and ending with " (quotes) E.g. a file of 3 lines "hey what is going on @mike220. I am working on your car. Its engine is in very bad condition" "Because if you knew, you'd get shredded and do it with certainty" "@honey220 Do you know someone who has busted their ass on a diet only for results to come to a screeching halt after a few weeks" How can i trim each line, within the quotes, to a Fixed length say 30 or 50 or 100 characters (including spaces) I want to enter the number of character in batch and it can trim accordingly and produce a file def.txt with trimmed lines within quotes. Say i enter 50, results of above example should be "hey what is going on @mike220. • HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

• sendmail new mail notification to external address only with the first unread email

  I'm running a webserver with a contact form which triggers a php script to sendmail the message to a local account on the server, and I want to be notified on my regular email account when I got new messages. I could have a notification per email or just send the emails directly to my account but that'd be too much: I just want a "you have new mail" notification sent to my email every time the inbox turns from 0 unread messages to 1. Google is burying me in sendmail documentation, and still can't find anything about it. Any ideas?

• RUNIT - created first service directory, "sv start testrun" does not work

  I'm pretty new to runit. I installed it on a Ubuntu host. What I did: 1) created a dir testrun in /etc/sv 2) created a script run in /etc/sv/testrun/run, the script content: #! /bin/bash exec /root/FP/annotate-output python /root/FP/test.py | logger -t svtest 3) If I call directly /etc/sv/testrun/run it executes successfully 4) I run sv start testrun (or sv run testrun, sv restart testrun), all of them end up with the same error msg: fail: sv: unable to change to service directory: file does not exist Any ideas what am I doing wrong? • Partitioning Windows 8.1 in order to have data partition first and system partitions at HDD end

  How can I have recovery partition at the HDD end? My aim is to have data partition installed on fastest sectors of my hard drive, as I don't really care if restoring operations are slow... During Windows installation, when I create a partition, I get immediately created EFI and recovery ones just before the actual data partition. EFI position is good, I want my PC boot fast, but I want to move partitions I don't care about speed. I've also considered GParted, but I think I'm not able to use it :P

• Picking good first estimates for Goldschmidt division

  I'm calculating fixedpoint reciprocals in Q22.10 with Goldschmidt division for use in my software rasterizer on ARM. This is done by just setting the nominator to 1, i.e the nominator becomes the scalar on the first iteration. To be honest, I'm kind of following the wikipedia algorithm blindly here. The article says that if the denominator is scaled in the half-open range (0.5, 1.0], a good first estimate can be based on the denominator alone: Let F be the estimated scalar and D be the denominator, then F = 2 - D. But when doing this, I lose a lot of precision. Say if I want to find the reciprocal of 512.00002f. In order to scale the number down, I lose 10 bits of precision in the fraction part, which is shifted out. So, my questions are: Is there a way to pick a better estimate which does not require normalization? Also, is it possible to pre-calculate the first estimates so the series converges faster? Right now, it converges after the 4th iteration on average. On ARM this is about ~50 cycles worst case, and that's not taking emulation of clz/bsr into account, nor memory lookups. Here is my testcase. Note: The software implementation of clz on line 13 is from my post here. • Introducing SSIS Reporting Pack for SQL Server code-named Denali

  In recent blog posts I have introduced the new SSIS Catalog that is forthcoming in SQL Server Code-named Denali: What's new in SSIS in Denali Introduction to SSIS Projects in Denali Parameters in SSIS In Denali SSIS Server, Catalogs, Environments and Environment Variables in SSIS in Denali The SSIS Catalog is responsible for executing SSIS packages and also for capturing the metadata from those executions. However, at the time of writing there is no mechanism provided to view analyse and drill into that metadata and that is the reason that I am, in this blog post, introducing a suite of SSIS Catalog reports called the SSIS Reporting Pack which you can download from my SkyDrive at http://cid-550f681dad532637.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/SSIS%20Reporting%20Pack/SSISReportingPack%20v0.1.zip. • Upgrade Kubuntu 11.10 to 12.10 I get error code that 11.10 is outdated

  I installed Kubuntu 11.10 on top of Windows 7. Everything works fine. I tried to update 11.10 to 12.10 and I get error Code that 11.10 is outdated and not supported. Update stops. I downloaded 12.10 iso but there is no upgrade option, just install. How can I remove the 11.10 installation and install 12.10. (Without breaking my Windows 7 install.) I need dual boot option. • How is the Linux repository administrated?

  I am amazed by the Linux project and I would like to learn how they administrate the code, given the huge number of developers. I found the Linux repository on GitHub, but I do not understand how it is administrated. For example the following commit: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/31fd84b95eb211d5db460a1dda85e004800a7b52 Notice the following part: So one authored and Torvalds committed. How is this possible. I thought that it was only possible to have either pull or pushing rights, but here it seems like there is an approval stage. I should mention that the specific problem I am trying to solve is that we use pull requests to our repo. The problem we are facing is that while a pull request is waiting to get merged, it is often broken by a commit. This leads to a seemingly never ending work to adapt the fork in order to make the pull request merge smoothly. Do Linux solve this by giving lots of people pushing rights (at least there are currently just three pull requests but hundreds of commits per day).
