  Command line and scripting is dangerous. Make a little typo with rm -rf and you are in a world of hurt. Confuse prod with stage in the name of the database while running an import script and you are boned (if they are on the same server, which is not good, but happens). Same for noticing too late that the server name where you sshed is not what you thought it was after funning some commands. You have to respect the Hole Hawg. I have a few little rituals before running risky commands - like doing a triple take check of the server I'm on. Here's an interesting article on rm safety. What little rituals, tools and tricks keeps you safe on the command line? And I mean objective things, like "first run ls foo*, look at the output of that and then substitute ls with rm -rf to avoid running rm -rf foo * or something like that", not "make sure you know what the command will do".

• Can't connect to Apple Time Capsule in home network using Home Plugs from Win 7 Machine

  I have the following home network setup with subnet 255.255.255.0 but recently moved my time capsule to a different location when I added a third Home Plug and can no longer ping or map a network drive to it from the Windows 7 Machine. However using Airport Utility on the Windows 7 machine I can manually configure the Time Capsule. Using a Macbook on WIFI Network 1 or 2 - I can backup to the time capsule, so its accessible via both the router wifi network and the time capsule wifi network. The Time Capsule is set to BRIDGE function - ie no NAT or DHCP server enabled. Any bright sparks out there that can help diagnose the problem? • Apache returns truncated image

  I am bringing up an image directly through firefox (no PHP or other scripting code) and it appears that Apache is returning either a truncated image or a corrupted image. I get the top 5-10% of the image. It appears that I get complete width and height info. If I hit "refresh" (in firefox) I get about 5 more lines of the image. And if I hit refresh again I get another 5 lines. In IE I get the same initial 5-10% of the top of the file. But refresh does not give me any more. Bringing the image up across the network through a mapped-drive reveals the entire image. (so the image(s) itself seems to be okay). (If I point firefox to the image via mapped-drive rather than through Apache firefox brings the image up just fine. So it does seem to be Apache at issue) Any ideas?

• Not able to access other machines on network

  Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

• Tool needed for remote software deployment to Windows PC's over internet

  Hi Can anyone recommend a commercial software package that enables automated rollouts of a bespoke software package across the internet? We are looking at approximately 1000 remote PC's that our organisation owns, geographically scattered and with varying bandwidths available from a central site. The PC's are not manned, they are used as server machines. The tool needs to have some scripting facilities too. The tool needs to be able to push software to the remote site in an automated way. We also need it to be able to reboot the remote machine too. Any ideas anyone? thanks.

• Problems connecting Centos on VMware player to the network using bridged connection.

  Hi, I installed CentOs on VMware Player 3.0.1 running on windows XP. When trying to configure it to connect to the internet in a bridged configuration, I get an error message when trying to bring up the network interface: [root@VMLinux ~]# /et/init.d/network start Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up interface eth0: Determining IP information for eth0... failed [FAILED] VM is running on a machine that has access to the network, I tried it on two different networks that have DHCP enabled. Everything works fine when using a NAT connection through my host. How can I make the bridge work for me? Thanks.

  I'm looking for a new tool for the ol' admin toolkit and would value some suggestions. I would like to do some "automated" testing of handful of websites for XSS (cross site scripting) vulns, along with checking for SQL injection opportunities. I realize that an automated tool approach isn't necessarily the only or best solution, but I'm hoping it would give me a nice start. The sites I need to scan cover the range in stacks from PHP / MySQL to Coldfusion, with some classic ASP and ASP.NET mixed in for good measure. What tools would you use to scan for Web application vulns? (Please note I'm focusing on the web apps directly, not the servers themselves).

• Preparing computers for remote MSI installation in NT4 domain

  We recently purchased EMCO Remote Installer to deploy MSI packages we're creating. We are still (unfortunately) in an NT4 domain, and when I try to deploy a package using domain's administrator credentials I'm getting "access denied". Under the "requirements for remote computers" section on the EMCO website (http://www.emco.is/products/remote-installer/requirements.php), it says that it requires remote machines to have: * Started services: Computer Browser, Remote Registry * File and Printer sharing enabled * Windows Installer 3.1 * TCP ports opened: 135, 139, 445 * UDP ports opened: 137, 138 Is there any way of scripting these changes? If so, could someone get me started? I have about 200 machines I need to get this working with. Thanks for all your help!!

• Bash Script to Compress / Transfer / Remove Log Files

  I am currently using chronolog to set log file names for Apache with date. They are in the following format: /WEB/LOGS/APACHE_ACCESS_YYYY-MM-DD.log /WEB/LOGS/APACHE_ERROR_YYYY-MM-DD.log I would like to have a script that runs on the first of every month and compresses the log files from the previous month, transfers them to another host (via SCP) and then deletes the compressed file. find . -name '*.log' -mtime +1 -type f I've found several examples like the one above that allow you to select files x days old, but I need all files from the previous month. I am the first to admit my bash scripting skills are weak so would really appreciate any help and guidance.

• Multicast accross the subnets

  My application sends some UDP packets on a multicast address. In our office we have 3 subnets connected via routers. Sitting in my subnet I'm able to ping the IP of the other subnet. Will multicast packets cross my subnet and reach the machines of other subnets? Or router will need some configuration? Or do I have to program a bridge for it? Please note that I do not know anything about Networking. Kindly tell me something that I can ask my network admin to do.

  Hi, I'm writing a simple UI for the visually impaired using a speech synthesizer. I've looked all over the internet for an email client which I can script to fit these purposes but to no avail. I believe several CLI email clients(eg MUTT) allow sending emails with command line arguments only. But I've yet to find a client that can download the emails, decode them and then dump them to a text file. The best candidate so far seems to be mailx, but it seems like it needs quite a lot of babysitting to fit my needs. Any suggestions for scripting-friendly email clients? Am I missing something fundamental about MUTT? Are there any libraries/programs that help me decode the MIME encoding used in todays emails from a maildir? Should I just bite the bullet and write a script for mailx? Thanks in advance.

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte.   Hi, I often find myself in the position of having to sniff on a connection between for example an arm board I am developing on, and another computer on the network, or out of the network. The easy situation is when I can install a sniffer on the computer talking to the embedded device. When it is not possible, I currently install an old 10Mb/s HUB. However I am afraid my HUB might stop working, and I would like to know some alternative. Here are the alternatives I could think of : Buy another HUB. Is that still possible ? Have some sort of ethernet sniffing bridge, like what they do for USB. I am afraid this kind of device is expensive. use ARP poisoning.

• How can I sync Nokia smartphones' calendars with Snow Leopard Server's iCal Server?

  I've just installed and configured a Mac Mini Server for a customer who wanted to stop using Google Apps for their email. The plan was to also use the new server's calendaring service but we've hit a small snag: the staff all use iCal on Macs and Nokia E71s and there doesn't seem to be a way to use a single calendar for each person that syncs with both. iSync/iCal doesn't appear to allow their manually-synced phones to sync with the CalDAV calendars on the server, only with local calendars on their Macs. Nor does Nokia's organiser software support CalDAV but rather SyncML for live networked syncing. I was wondering if there's a plugin for iCal Server that would provide a bridge to a SyncML service I could run on the server... or anything else that would work (preferably FOSS)!

• Thunderbird Transition from POP3 to IMAP Keeping Directory Structure

  For the past 6 years I have been using Thunderbird as a POP3 client to gmail (I do not delete the messages from the server after downloading). I organize all of my mail locally and occasionally use gmail for web access. Obviously, any local changes aren't reflected on the server so I have one inbox with 10s of 1000s of unread messages (since I usually read them on Thunderbird and they do not get marked as read in gmail) I'd like to start using IMAP but the main deterrent is that I'd lose the organization of my email. Is there any utility that I could use to reconstruct the structure? I am not sure if it is possible to correlate messages I've downloaded from the server with messages still on the server. A solution which requires minor scripting/databasing is acceptable!

• nVidia Control Panel Won't Recognize SLI

  So yesterday I bought a brand new, 1,000W PSU to replace my 650W one and to allow for SLI. I install it and my second card (both are GTX 560 ti cards). I reinstalled my drivers and my system recognizes both cards. The control panel says "GTX 560 ti x2", I can select between them for Physx, sound output, picture output (although I only have one hooked up to my monitor), etc. But the kicker is I can't turn on SLI. Everything I've read says I'll get a balloon notification saying I can use SLI and the control panel will have a new section, etc, but none of those things happens. Anyone have any ideas? System: Win7 Professional x64 2x GTX 560 ti 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 1,000W Xion PSU 8GB RAM (Can't think of my motherboard right now) Note: My PSU and MOBO both say they're SLI certified and I'm using an SLI bridge. • determine what is invoking refresh/F5 in WinXP?

  My laptop recently started invoking refresh (F5) on its own. Works OK from start-up/reboot but then for no apparent reason will start refreshing Initially thought it was a web page scripting issue, as I noticed it while browsing. But then found it occurs with the browser closed. Not sure if this could be a hardware issue, or some silly virus, or just a bug? Would like a utility that could tell me what device/program is invoking the refresh. Any ideas? thanks

• Using WDS to make a router act like a makeshift signal booster

  I've got a router that supports WDS, and I was wondering if I could use it to help extend the range of an existing wireless router? The PC I'm using right now is just barely within the signal range of a wireless router, and the signal is rather weak so I moved my wireless USB adapter away from the computer using a USB extension cord and used a pie tin + some packing tape + a stack of books and a tall wooden stand to make a sort of reflector dish. Sometime in the future I'd like other PCs to be able to connect wirelessly but with the way things are set up I can't move any farther from this spot or I lose the signal entirely. Can I use WDS to bridge the two networks together both to increase the range of the first network and allow computers connected to the 2nd router to share internet access?

• Is there a way to create a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror across multiple volumes?

  We use a NetApp FAS 6-series filer with an application that spans multiple volumes. For backup purposes I would like to create a consistent snapshot that spans these volumes at the same point in time (or at least with an extremely low delta); additionally, we'd like to to use SnapMirror to replace the production environment to test volumes. The problem is in creating a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror, since these commands are not transactional and do not take multiple parameters. I tried scripting consecutive "snap create" or "snapmirror resync" commands via SSH, but there's always a 0.5-2 second difference between each snapshot. It's currently "good enough", but I'm seriously concerned about the consistency impact with increased load (we're currently in pre-production). Has anyone managed to create a consistent snapshot that spans several volumes? How did you pull it off?

• Run Python Server at Startup

  Hello, I've got a few Python based servers that I need to run, and would like them to start automatically when I start my Ubuntu Server box. What is the best way to execute them like this? I was hoping I could write a Bash script and use Screen to get them running in the background, where I can check on them every now and then, but where as echo screen -d -m python works just fine, echo screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py` doesn't, with no error messages. Is that something to do with the spaces? Even though I did surround it with backquotes? I also tried: WEB="screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py`" echo $WEB As a way of escaping the spaces, but no luck. What's Bash scripting way to do this? And, once the Bash script works, where can I put it to make it execute on startup?

• Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

  Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... • KVM Virtual guest Paused on Reboot

  I'm running REHL 6 and just installed a Ubuntu Server Guest via KVM set to start at boot. This works correctly and the guest loads, but it loads "paused" and requires that I manually un-pause it. Can someone give me a hint as to how I can I get the Guest OS to actually become active on boot?   I am running a virtual server in the web on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 32 Bit.
