Using WDS to make a router act like a makeshift signal booster

I've got a router that supports WDS, and I was wondering if I could use it to help extend the range of an existing wireless router? The PC I'm using right now is just barely within the signal range of a wireless router, and the signal is rather weak so I moved my wireless USB adapter away from the computer using a USB extension cord and used a pie tin + some packing tape + a stack of books and a tall wooden stand to make a sort of reflector dish. Sometime in the future I'd like other PCs to be able to connect wirelessly but with the way things are set up I can't move any farther from this spot or I lose the signal entirely. Can I use WDS to bridge the two networks together both to increase the range of the first network and allow computers connected to the 2nd router to share internet access?

How to configure 2nd network card for use in VMWare Workstation?

Hi all, I am using VMWare Workstation 6.5, connected to my network with a bridged adapter so that the virtual machine OS (Windows XP) has its own IP adress. This just worked out of the box. Now my host machine (Windows Vista) has an additional network card that is directly connected to another computer using a crossover cable (and fixed IP adress 10.1.1.4, while the "main" network connection is using DHCP with IP in the 192.68.0.* range). How can I use that network connection as well in the virtual machine? Do I need to bridge my 2nd network adapter to some VMnetX adapter? Do I need to add a host virtual adapter? I do not know much about networks, and the VMWare network settings really confuse me :-) Thanks, Timo

Memeory Leak in Windows Page file when calling a shell command

I have an issue on our Windows 2003 x64 Build Server when invoking shell commands from a script. Each call causes a "memory leak" in the page file so it grows quite rapidly until it reaches the maximum and the machine stops working. I can reproduce the problem very nicely by running a perl script like for ($count=1; $count<5000; $count++) { system "echo huhu"; } It is independent of he scripting language as the same happens with lua: for i=1,5000 do os.execute("echo huhu") end I found somebody describing the same issue with php at http://www.issociate.de/board/post/454835/Memory_leak_occurs_when_exec%28%29_function_is_used_on_Windows_platform.html His solution: Firewall/Virus Scanner does not apply, neither are running on the machine. We can also reproduce the issue on other Developer Machines running XP 64, but not on XP 32 Bit. The guilty guy for the allocation is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs which runs all the basic Windows services. Does anybody know the issue and how to resolve it ?

OpenVPN Server Ethernet Bridging Question

Hello All, I am having a difficult time properly configuring an ethernet bridge using OpenVPN 2.0.9 install on CentOS 5 ( VPN server ). The goal that I am trying to complete is to connect a VM ( instance running on the same CentOS machine ) acting as a Microsoft Business Contact Manager server. I would then like this "BCM server" to serve Windows XP clients on 192.168.1.0/24 network as well as clients connecting from VPN ( 10.8.0.0/24 ). The setup as it is now was based off a known working configuration. The problem with the working configuration was that it would allow to the client to connect and access everything running on the VPN server ( SVN, Samba, VM Server ) but not any computers on the 192.168.1.0/24 network. I must disclose that the VPN server is behind a router/firewall. There are times when you need to spare hardware resources (either to keep using legacy hardware, to play the embedded card, or just to be efficient because a large footprint is trashing CPU caches, leading to unacceptable levels of idle-states). In this spirit, some efforts have been made to make 'light' ports of Java or Mono (C# for Linux), and they range in the 80-50 MB (instead of the 100-200 MB). Add a Web server (Apache, IIS, etc.) to the scripting engine and you can happily dive into the GB (IIS + .Net) only to load the tool in memory. Anybody with more modest tools in the specs area?

Is it possible to control my CPU frequency?

My laptop's CPU Type is: Mobile AMD Turion 64 ML-30, 1600 MHz (8 x 200) I was wondering how to find out if its CPU frequency is controllable? What softwares or other ways can control my CPU frequency? My OSes are Windows XP and Ubuntu. Can I control CPU frequency so that the CPU temperature can be controlled not to exceed some temperature? Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers... Is there a way to create a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror across multiple volumes?

We use a NetApp FAS 6-series filer with an application that spans multiple volumes. For backup purposes I would like to create a consistent snapshot that spans these volumes at the same point in time (or at least with an extremely low delta); additionally, we'd like to to use SnapMirror to replace the production environment to test volumes. The problem is in creating a consistent snapshot/SnapMirror, since these commands are not transactional and do not take multiple parameters. I tried scripting consecutive "snap create" or "snapmirror resync" commands via SSH, but there's always a 0.5-2 second difference between each snapshot. It's currently "good enough", but I'm seriously concerned about the consistency impact with increased load (we're currently in pre-production). Has anyone managed to create a consistent snapshot that spans several volumes? How did you pull it off?

Hello, I would like to create a document generator with templating. The workflow should be as following: The user input data to a static form (simple text input). The user chooses a graphically designed template. A document with the chosen template containing the user data is generated. The initial templates repository is prepared in advance, but it should be easy to add new templates to the process. I have the full MS Office suite and the preferred file format is an MS .doc. Chassis fans and power LEDs still work in Hibernate

I have ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard recently updated to 2.20 BIOS version. OS is Windows 7 x64. The problem is after that update full hibernation (by that i mean full system power off) stopped working although everything was fine before. Now when I press hibernate, sleep in initiated as usual, monitor goes to sleep, HDD and CPU fan stop spinning, but chassis fans (i have Gigabyte Aurora 3D 570 case with two rear and one front fans) still remain working. Also power leds are lit as if computer is turned on. Tried changing different UEFI settings related to sleep mode, and none of them change above described behaviour. I have "Deep Sleep" (Advanced-South Bridge Configuration) set to "Enabled in S4-S5", "Suspend to RAM" (Advanced-ACPI Configuration) set to "Auto", all fans settings in "H/W Monitor" set to "Auto".

IIS FTP - Users Last Logon

How would you determine the last FTP logon time/date for a bunch of local user accounts on a DMZ (standalone/workgroup) server running IIS FTP? I know I could use a log aggregator and sift through it that way, but this server has been operational for approximately 8 years and I don't fancy that vector. I have also tried the scripting route, but this is of no use because the users have never actually logged onto the machine, so there's no profile (rendering the WMI classes *WIN32_UserAccount* and *WIN32_UserProfile* useless). How can I port forward with an airport extreme and a NAT enabled modem?

I run an Actiontec HD701D modem with NAT to an Airport extreme base station to laptop etc. As you might expect I get double NAT issues. I tried a lot of different things to forward a port, but no luck. Currently the airport is in bridge mode letting the modem handle the NAT, but still can't forward the port. Also to note: firewall is off on the router, firewall is set to allow the application in OSX 10.6.3 and I did forward the port in the router. No luck.

Bridging wireless and wired networks on Linux box

I have the following setup: modem + router - - - - -Ubuntu box on master mode.........wireless devises. Ubuntu machine connects to Internet on wired network. I've dhcp3-server, masquerading, and wireless card with master mode on Ubuntu box. The issue is Ubuntu connects to the router on NAT. The wireless devises connect to the Ubuntu box on a NAT too (though different). SO my wireless devises are behind two NAT networks. The solution I am looking for is Ubuntu should forward dhcp requests to the modem+router, and Ubuntu should act as a switch or a bridge that allows wireless devises to connect to the wired network. So the modem+router should act a main router.

How can I set up OpenVPN to accept more than 60 connections?

Can't bring NAT to work

Hello, I bought a D-link DIR-300 wireless router and i can't bring NAT to work, i have an ssh and http service i need to forward to the internet. My connection is as follows: I have an ADSL connection, i'm using a ADSL ethernet modem connected and working, it doesnt let me put it on bridge mode. I have my router connected to my adsl modem through ethernet, it gets its ip through DHCP (and i'ts always the same) I have a desktop computer running linux with apache and openssh configured and working, it has fixed ip. I configured the NAT in the modem forwarding port 22 from the router ip to the internet. In the router i setup NAT forwarding port 22 from the desktop computer fixed ip to out there. This setup already worked with a fonera i had before, can anyone help me with this or tell me what kind of tests do i need to do? How can i test if the router is forwarding ports correctly before the modem?

I am using internet 8 and under internet options advanced there is not box to check to enable java. I was told to reset which did nto work. I have tried to uninstall java 6-21 32 bit but I get windows installer error 1723. I brought up the java console and made sure it was pointing to the right target. But I guess the main thing is I have no enable java under internet options, advanced. It was under security to enable java scripting. Any answers?

Linux servers seeing bad download performance behind Sonicwall firewall

I'm working with a pair of co-located CentOS Linux servers sitting behind a Sonicwall PRO 2040 Enhanced firewall running in transparent bridge mode. These servers are having a strange problem downloading files more than a few megabytes in size. For example, if I try to wget or FTP a copy of the Linux kernel from kernel.org, the first ~1-2MB will download at 600+K/s, and then throughput will drop off a cliff to 1K/s. I've reviewed all the firewall configuration settings for anything suspicious, but found nothing. More interestingly, I performed the same download with a Windows server sitting behind the same firewall, and it sailed right through at 600+K/s the whole way. Has anyone seen this? Where should I start looking to troubleshoot this problem?

help building a PC that can image a dozen hard drives simultaneously

Not sure if this belongs on here or SuperUser, but here goes... I'm trying to figure out how to make a mass hard drive imaging PC out of COTS parts. A dedicated imaging device can do 10 drives at a time, but costs several thousand dollars. So far, I'm thinking to use several 3-port PCI-E Firewire cards, and use some kind of Firewire-to-IDE adapter to connect the drives themselves. The "software" would consist of scripting diskpart, or some other imaging utility. The problem is that I can't seem to find any sort of adapter. I could use standard external hard drive bays, but then I'd have a dozen power cables that I need to plug in. Ugly, messy, and inefficient. I picked Firewire over USB not only for better transfer speeds, but also because FW can deliver power over the bus (and could theoretically power a hard drive). Does anyone have any input on this?

How anti-virus on the host machne affects performance of virtual machines?

I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

Error while trying to configure VLAN with Open vSwitch

I am trying to connect a number of VMs using Open vSwitch. The VMs are on two separate physical boxes. Here is what I did: Created two tap devices on one physical host sudo ip tuntap add mode tap tap0 and same for tap1 Bring them up sudo ip link set tap0 up Add them as ports to Open vSwitch (br0 was created as a OVS bridge previously) sudo ovs-vsctl add-port br0 tap0 tag=1 Now I booted the VMs (using VirtualBox) and assigned addresses 192.168.122.11 and 192.168.122.12. Now when I try to ping one VM from another, I get the error Connect: network is unreachable. Since both VMs are connected to the switch on the same VLAN, I expect to be able to ping one from another. What is going wrong here?

Not able to access other machines on network

Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

sudo su - username while keeping ssh key forwarding

If I have a server A into which I can login with my ssh key and I have the ability to "sudo su - otheruser", I lose key forwarding, because the env variables are removed and the socket is only readable by my original user. Is there a way I can bridge the key forwarding through the "sudo su - otheruser", so I can do stuff on a server B with my forwarded key (git clone and rsync in my case)? The only way I can think of is adding my key to authorized_keys of otheruser and "ssh otheruser@localhost", but that's cumbersome to do for every user and server combination I may have.
