  • How to be a pro in several programming languages? [on hold]

    I love PHP and C# languages and i want to be excellent in both. I like to develop PHP applications using MySQL, Nginx, Memcached and so on technologies. I also like ASP.NET MVC stack and think it's great tools. But each technology requires a lot of time to master it. The same is true for C# web stack - there is a huge amount of things to be mastered like Azure, LINQ, Entity Framework ets. Mastering PHP means knowing how it works under the hood. Mastering C# means knowing CLR implementations on a deep level, knowing MSIL etc/ Where to get time for all this? Maybe this is "jack of all trades"? What can you advice?

  • What's the reason in your mind Exception are heavily used in Managed (C# and Java) language but not in C++?

    AFAIK, a lot of C++ projects don't allow exceptions and deny them in coding guidelines. I have a lot of reasons, for example, Exception is hard to handle correctly if your binary needs to be compiled by separate and different compilers. But it doesn't fully convince me, there is a lot of projects which are just using one compiler. Compared to C++, Exceptions are heavily used in C# and Java and the reason can only be that Exception are not bringing enough benefit. One point is Debugbility in practice. Exception can not get the call stack in C++ code, but in C# and Java you can get the call stack from Exception, it is significant and makes debugging easier. No-CallStack is not the fault of the Exception, it is the language difference , but it impacts the Exception usage. So what's the reason that exceptions are frowned upon in c++ programs?

  • .NET - Where can I start? [closed]

    I'm a moderately experienced developer with experience developing using a variety of languages. I've done C++, Java, PHP, Javascript, and several other languages. I remember the Java dev stack being rather difficult to dive into, but it's nothing like the endless sea of the .NET framework. I'd like to become experienced in .NET development, as many dev shops are microsoft-centric. But I'm a little unsure as to where the best place to start is. As I already know a bunch of programming languages, I don't really need resources that will help me learn C# or any of the .NET languages as much as I need to learn the development stack, APIs, etc. Any suggestions on the best way to start learning .NET development?

    A client of mine has an XP era eMachines. The power supply has died and been replaced 3 times. I've discharged the motherboard and checked the surge protector. In the middle of a scan with ComboFix, the machine died. It powers on and hangs before the BIOS and shows a solid yellow light. I believe the model # is T5062 or something like that.

    I have a few MP4s that i want to upload to my flickr account but they have a maximum size of 500mb as mine is only about 550 i was planing to simply split them in half then upload them, but i want to make sure all the meta data is included but it does not seem to be.   • Vim digraphs is not working

    I've tried to input digraphs in Vim (without vi compatibility), and unfortunately I can't. After using ControlKP * it should input big greek pi letter. I've also tried using PBS * with :set digraph, but no success either.     I've just set up my first Android development environment consisting of Eclipse 3.5 Mac OSX 10.5 Android SDK for x86 macs ADT Eclipse plugin 0.9.6 I've set set $PATH to my SDK/tools directory (which shouldn't matter if I only use Eclipse right?) and started Eclipse, but when I try to set the path to the SDK in Eclipse, i get the error "parseSdkContent failed".   • c# WinForms ReportViewer Performance issue using RefreshReport() and ServerReport.SetParameters()

    Hi All, Currently I am writing a c# client application that uses the WinForms ReportViewer Control to display reports from a remote server. I am having performance troubles with the ReportViewer Control, to be specific with the 2 methods reportViewer.ServerReport.SetParameters() and reportViewer.RefreshReport() – they both take a really long time to complete and not just on the very first call, but on each subsequent call as well. SetParameters() takes 20 to 40 seconds (they vary greatly in time, some execute event okay fast) and RefreshReport() is a bit faster but still takes ages. I don’t think the server is the culprit, as the same report viewed using the browser renders pretty fast, about a second tops. The report in question doesn't matter as well. When I break into the process and take a look at the call stack, I see a call to Socket.DoConnect. So I thought that’s a good reason to start using fiddler and I installed it, disabled caching and fired up the app again to see which call takes that long to connect, but the performance issue was gone. By using a proxy I am having the same performance as the webbrowser. FYI: I am using NTLM authentication in the following way: reportViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerCredentials.NetworkCredentials = new NetworkCredentials() { Username = ... } I don’t have a strong webbackground, so I guess my question is: What should this tell me / What should I be looking into? Then it does not pop up for 5-6 runs, and then starts again. Anyone knows why is this happening? I have just installed clean W8.1 64 bit, VS2013 and TFS 2013 (although I had the same problem with W8 and VS2012, but not as often).

    Hello guys, I already did several searches on Stack Overflow and Google, but I couldn't find a solution to my problem. I have a Detail View for a product that includes a UIScrollView and a few subviews (UIImageView, UILabel, UITextView). You can find an example here. First I wanna autoresize the UITextView (not the text itself!) to the corresponding height. Then I wanna autoresize the entire UIScrollView so that it fits the height of my UITextView and the elements above it. I've tried the following code: myUITextView.frame = CGRectMake(2.0, 98.0, 316.0, self.view.bounds.size.height); [scrollView setContentOffset:CGPointMake(0.0, 0.0) animated:NO]; scrollView.contentSize = CGSizeMake(320.0, 98.0 + [myUITextView frame].size.height); [self.view addSubview:scrollView]; 98.0 + [myUITextView frame].size.height) because my thought was: After getting the height of myUITextView, add the height of the other subviews (98.0) to it.     Hibernate 3.5-Final is finally here and it offers the much anticipated JPA2 support, amongst other features. I am working on a project(EJB3 based) using JBoss 5.1.0.GA and Hibernate 3.3, but I wanted to take advantage of the JPA2 and tried to upgrade to Hibernate 3.5. What I did was fairly simple and standard - I just put all the hibernate 3.5 jars in the server/configuration(default,all,etc)/lib folder - that way they take precedence over the hibernate artifacts shipped with JBoss. It seems though that JBoss ships with libraries that are dependent on the JPA1 implementation part of the hibernate 3.3, because I started getting some errors about unimplemented abstract methods and stuff like that on deploy: 23:21:26,792 WARN [Ejb3Configuration] Persistence provider caller does not implement the EJB3 spec correctly.     Background I use a Tornado-like server with support for long-polls. Each web pages a user clicks around to sets up a long poll to the server like this: $.ajax({ type: 'GET', url: "/mylongpollurl/", dataType: 'application/json', success: function(json) { // I do stuff here }, error: function(xhr, errText, ex) { // If timeout I send a new long-poll request } }); Problem I will now rely on data that I get from Fiddler monitoring all requests made from my browser (FF at the moment). Page 1 is loaded and the long poll request is made, now idling at server side. I click a link to page 2 and that page is loaded and setting up a long poll request, BUT the long poll request from page 1 is still idling at server side (according to Fiddler). This means that I will stack all long poll calls when clicking around the page, thus end up with lots of active connections on the server (or are they maybe sharing connection?) My thoughts - As it's a Tornado-like server (using epoll) it can handle quite a lot of connections. But this fact is not to exploit in my opinion. What I mean is that I prefer not to have a timeout on the server for this case (were the client disappears). - I know those stand alone pages better uses a common head and only swap content via ajax calls but this design we use today was not my call... - The best way to solve this would probably be to have the connection reused (hard to pull off I think) or closed as soon as the browser leaves the page (you click to another page).     Hey guys, my first question here on stack overflow. Trying to get something pretty simple to work, I'm sure I'm missing something quite obvious. Still getting used to the "standard" css, too many years working with non-functional ones! Heh. So, sample of what I'm doing: <div style="overflow: auto; border: 1px solid"> hello <div style="position: relative; z-index: 99999; top: 0px; left: 0px;"> <div style="z-index: 99999; overflow-y: hidden; position: absolute; overflow: hidden; height: 200px; left: 0; auto: 0"> <ul> <li >New</li> <li >Old</li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> In essence: The first div is a container, that I would like to automatically overflow as content is added. Inside of that container, I have a popup menu, which I have simplified here. The popup menu appears (as it should) directly under "hello". My problem, however, is that instead of the popup menu "coming out" of the parent, as would be expected by the absolute position, it is actually causing a scrollbar to appear on the parent. I know that if I take otu the "position: relative" it works, but then it no longer appars where I want it (directly under the previous element). What am I missing here?     I have recently created a myopenid to log into stack overflow. This login works on stackoverflow.com but NOT on meta.stackoverflow.com. Why is this? This seems like it is a problem on (meta)stackoverflow's side rather than myopenid's side. When I attempt to login to meta.stackoverflow.com using myopenid login, I end up being redirected to a blank page with a very long query string. The url of the blank page is http://www.myopenid.com/server?... Secondly, my google login does not work. When I attempt to login to stackoverflow.com using my google login I end up seeing a blank page with a url beginning with http://stackoverflow.com/users/authenticate/?s... I am using Firefox 3.6.3 and I can successfully login to stackoverflow.com using myopenid but NOT with myopenid onto meta.stackoverflow.com and NOT with google onto stackoverflow.com. Please note that I would prefer to use my google login to login to stackoverflow. I only created myopenid account to get to the root of the problem. Stackoverflow should seriously consider giving users the option of having stackoverflow specific credentials because for me and I am sure countless others this openid thing don't work. (I know this should be posted in meta.stackoverflow.com but this requires a working openid, which I do not have).
