• Monitor reset itself and now I can't set the resolution/settings back to how it was before

  I've had my LG 24" widescreen monitor since 2009 and 2 weeks ago I noticed the monitor turned itself off (never had it done this before) so I switched it back on to find all the settings like gamma, resolution etc. different = looked like it had been reset. Everyone in the house swears they never unplugged and plugged it back in. When I opened a webpage the fonts and zoom on the pages were different and my desktop was strange too; fonts of the icons were different etc. The screen seems blurry and when I watch movies the faces look distorted so I thought I would try to first figure out the resolution it used to be but when I go under "Adjust screen resolution" none of the options work and there is no recommended resolution marked; all the options stretch out the screen and looks terrible so right now I have it set to the least distorted one. Then since the resolution wasn't working I set the other manual settings(done by physical buttons on the monitor) back to how it used to be (luckily, I had written these down). The monitor looks better but the resolution makes it a strain to use. I thought maybe some Windows update caused this crap so I tried to System Restore: didn't work. What went wrong? A few questions: 1) What was the likely cause of the monitor shutting down itself and screwing up the settings I have been using since the day I bought the monitor? 2) Why have the fonts changed everywhere unless this is a HDD/video card problem? 3) How do I find the perfect resolution it used to be? The monitor wants me to set it to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't one of the options although I don't remember what resolution I used before. I use the 16:9 setting while I try the available resolution options but nothing looks good! How do I find what it used to be?   I'm trying to get the source of a java resource stored in an oracle database using this code (connecting as SYSTEM for testing): DECLARE javalob CLOB; BEGIN DBMS_LOB.CREATETEMPORARY(javalob, false); DBMS_JAVA.EXPORT_RESOURCE('RESOURCENAME', 'SCHEMA', javalob); DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(javalob); END; But when I try to run it I get this: Java call terminated by uncaught Java exception: java.lang.SecurityException: cannot read <Resource Handle: RESOURCENAME|SCHEMA|301> because SYSTEM does not have execute privilege on it This thing is, I'm not sure how to grant permissions on <Resource Handle: RESOURCENAME|SCHEMA|301>, as this isn't a SQL or PL/SQL object. And why doesn't SYSTEM have access to it anyway?

  I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

• Cloning (mirroring) laptop display to area of external monitor display

  I'm using Maverick "10.10" Meercat on a HP Pavilion tx2110. This machine has an NVidia Go6150 graphics card, and sports a 1280x800 display. I have an external monitor which can do 1280x1024 resolution. FWIW I'm using openbox as my window manager; as I understand it this shouldn't be a factor. I'd like to clone the display to the monitor, so that the size of the desktop remains at 1280x800, and there is a horizontal blank area on the external monitor. I.E. I want to avoid having to pan the display of the desktop on either monitor. So the actual resolution of the monitor would be 1280x1024, but the resolution of the section of the monitor where stuff was actually being displayed would be 1280x800. Using the nvidia-settings applet, I'm able to set up the cloned display so that the desktop size is 1280x1024 (the resolution of the external monitor), but can't find a way to instead have the desktop size stay at the resolution of the laptop's built-in display. Is this achievable? Ideally I'd like the external monitor's blank area to be at the top of the screen, i.e. for it to align the display with the bottom of the screen.

• Second Monitor Detected, but not receiving a signal after upgrading to 12.04

  After I upgraded to 12.04, my second monitor is detected (in display settings), but will not power on. I have scoured the Internet and forums for a solution and I can't find anything. I have found a couple people with the same problem, but never a solution for it. I am no expert, but I'm certainly not a noob. My computer uses AMD Radeon 6250 graphics, but I do NOT want to use the proprietary graphics drivers. They refuse to work properly with my second monitor (they ATI drivers will only mirror screens, and I've done everything to try to fix it, and I DON't want mirrored screens) Not to mention that the default open-source video drivers seem to work much better than the proprietary anyway! Again, Ubuntu's default video drivers work fine, and they even DETECT the second monitor (Dell 19'). I can drag stuff off the screen and put it on the 'space' of the second monitor and even a screen-shot shows that there are two monitors active; but the monitor is OFF. It will not power on. It goes into 'power-save' mode because it is not receiving a signal. For some reason it is not getting the signal to power on, even though Ubuntu thinks the monitor is working properly. I had this working fine on my Sony VAIO yesterday (with Radeon graphics/default Ubuntu video drivers). I upgraded to a Samsung Series 3 and now I have this issue. I can't for the life of me figure out why the monitor is connected, detected and I have screen space for the monitor, but the screen won't turn on! • How to check if aspect ratio auto adjustment is enabled in monitor

  Game application is written in C++ and uses DirectX 8. I am getting a maximum monitor resolution to calculate it's aspect ratio. Then I use this value to fix game rendering (scale and set clipping to receive normal 4:3 image with black borders on wide screen monitors). How can I check if monitor is using aspect ratio auto adjustment now? Because my scaling plus monitor scaling makes resulting image overscaled. Thanks EDIT: I saw correct different monitor resolution handling with or without aspect ratio auto adjustment in "Royal Envoy" casual game. But don't know how do they do this.

• Monitor for HD video editing

  I have been researching for days and nights on a good monitor to buy for a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 2600 XT (256mb). It will be used extensively for HD video editing (1080p) and photo editing, and likely also digital/3D animation next year(a lot of FCP + CS4). I am a student, so money is a little bit of an issue, but I want something that I'll be able to use semi-professionally after I'm done school, and am willing to finance something if it is worth the cost. I'm HOPING for something under $1000 though. The IPS Ultrasharps from Dell seem to be getting good reviews from other video editors. Accurate colour correction is a concern for me (hopefully something that covers Adobe spectrum), as well as a decent response time, HD resolutions, and DVI port. Also something with good gradient/definition in black areas, as this is difficult for editing on most LCDs. 1X1 pixel, brightness, good DVD playback etc. Hopefully this is not impossible to find for under $2000!

  So I got this brand new monitor today an noticed the following problem: This happens while I'm moving my browser window for example. It's not font related, it also happens with icons as you can see on the picture. It's only persistend while I'm moving something, the faster I move it, the farther away is the shadow from the origin. I tested it on windows, linux and two different systems with DVI and VGA. Is this a known issue ?   Hi, Every time I turn on my PC the viewport isn't aligned correctly on the screen - there is always a black strip on the right hand side. This is not a big issue as it can be resolved by pressing the menu button on the screen and doing a factory reset. However it is irritating having to do it every time. I am using a flat screen monitor with vga connections. The weird thing it never used to happen before with the tower Im using. Is potentially out of date drivers a problem? Thanks.

  My X server seems to be faulty, but I don't know why. I had some problems last week with a new motherboard, but they seemed to be resolved. Today, I updated Kubuntu and restarted, but my Viewsonic VX900 LCD monitor shows the splash screen for several seconds, then displays the message "Out of Range" I have tried various kernels in Grub, some in recovery mode, most do the same thing. No key combinations bring up a shell prompt like I expect. The one exception was a very old kernel, that would only mount the file system as read-only, so I can't fix up the xorg.conf file. Is there anything to be done?

• How to configure 1080p HDTV as a monitor

  I've read several posts that almost answer my question, but not quite. I have a Samsung LN32C530 1080p HDTV I'd like to use as a monitor. I was reasonably successful getting the prior 720p model to work ok using SwitchResX, but I think I just got lucky with the parameters (1360x768@60Hz). I tried the expected (1920x1080@60Hz) values and "nearby" ones, with no luck. Older 720p params actually work, but I get the same small real estate as the older model TV. Trying values near 1080p always displays an image that doesn't match the screen size and is very jagged which makes me think interpolation is making things worse. Also, SwitchResX has a bunch of parameters other than H x W ("porch" etc), and I don't know how they all work together. Any help?

• Windows (7 & Vista) laptop monitor does not come back after closing lid

  I'm experiencing an issue with Windows Vista (and now Windows 7) with my laptop. When I close the laptop lid the monitor goes blank but will not come back on after I re-open the laptop. The screen stays blank and nothing that I do will get it to come back. The laptop is an HP DV9000 series. Has anyone else ran into this issue? One of the solutions I've seen online is to go into the device manager and replace the lid driver with something nonsensical (the website suggested pointing the driver at the sound recorder). This does solve the problem by disabling the lid but doesn't really resolve the root issue. I'm asking if anyone has any method I can use to debug what's going on. How do I tell if it is an operating system issue vs. a malfunction within the lid itself. I'd actually like the lid to function as it's meant to. Thank you!

• Can I use only a HDMI monitor?

  I recently found out there are such things as PC monitors with TV capabilities (or TVs that can be PC monitors), and the idea kind of tickles my fancy. I'm thinking of getting one of these gadgets, and if I do, I will connect it to my PC via HDMI (my graphics card has builtin HDMI), so that I also get sound to the TV. The reason for this is because I have a 2.1 sound system which I want to use both on the PC and the TV. Basically, I want the configuration to look like this: Cable --------> TV --> 2.1 Sound System PC --HDMI--> TV --> 2.1 Sound System My question is: can I use a setup like this? Can I not have a classic VGA monitor? Will I be able to see non-graphical interfaces (such as the BIOS, GRUB, a Linux terminal, ...) through HDMI on the TV? I use Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

  I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. Is there any way to solve this problem ? 1if i want to replace monitor what maximum resolution should i buy ? 2if i want to upgrade(graphics card/motherboard) my desktop what is the minimum configuration to support the current system. • Fedora 12 How to Force a Display to Load on Boot even when no Monitor is Attached

  When booting Fedora 12 with no monitor connected, if I connect a monitor later it gives a no signal error. I think it is set to auto-detect if a monitor is connected or not and load a display based of that. Since it initially detects no monitor no display is loaded. What I would like to do is have it act as if a monitor was always connected and provide the display signal always. I don't know if this is the issue or not but if you know how I might be able to fix this issue so that I can connect a monitor whenever I feel like it without having to restart that would be best.   Hello, due to a freeze problem of my Ubuntu 10.10 (it is not isolatable) I though about logging every executable of the kernel somehow in any file to see what happens last when a freeze occures the next time to not lose valuable information. I found acct but this is obviously not what I'm looking for. Actually it logs just user commands and those things. I need something which logs in a much "deeper" level. The best would be some kind of script which records every interrupt. Does anybody know some tool like that?
