In 2011, what are the reasons to stick with plain text mails?

People entering college today have never known a world without an Internet. HTML was invented 1980, that's more than thirty years ago or 1.5 generations. But plain text mails are still common despite all their problems: Encoding issues Wrapped code segments No links No way to use the "a picture says more than a thousand words" lore Most of the security risks are now handled by the underlying browser engine and smart settings like: Don't allow JavaScript in mails Don't execute attachments Don't download external resources (like web bugs) On top of that, only very few people still read mail only in command line tools like Mutt. Knowing Mutt myself, I'm pretty sure you can configure it to display HTML mail with, say, w3m. On top of that, most HTML mail capable clients send two versions of the mail (pure text with an HTML attachment). I'm not sure if there are any people left on the planet which still use a 56kbit modem to access their mail accounts. So what reasons are left to stick with plain text mails in 2011?

What are some good ways for an intermediate programmer to build skills?

Preface: I work mostly in Python, and Web Dev languages (HTML, CSS, Javascript and Jquery, PHP) I'm proficient at coding but I want to get better. In larger more advanced projects my programming skills break down. The more code there is the more trouble I have fitting all the pieces together. I understand syntax well, and I can catch and correct errors fairly easier. But the more advanced it gets the more I struggle. I believe I have a good understand of the basic and nuts and bolts of programming and I understand what's going on, but when it comes to larger projects, especially ones with heavy math involved my confidence flags and I start making mistakes. It's not that I can't do it, I'm just not used to doing it. Does anyone have any advice for someone who knows programming, but wants to get better? The only tutorials I can really find are beginner basic type stuff. Basically what I'm saying is I want to be confident when I'm tackling advanced projects, but I can't because I have little experience dealing with difficult situations.

Z-index preventing on hover attribute on another element [migrated]

I have two different elements (div class="") within a larger container. Let's call them div class="overlay_container" and div class="title." The div class="overlay_container" has a subclass, .image, which creates an overlay over the entire larger container on hover. The div class="title" has a z-index of 10,000 and lies over .image and therefore over the overlay. Unfortunately, when you hover over "title," the subclass overlay image underneath disappears. I know the problem is obviously that the "title" div is right over the other divs and therefore the on hover will disappear due to the z-index. But how do I fix this? How do I make it so that when you hover over the "title," the .image overlay still appears? If your answer involves jQuery, could you please tell me where to put the script (before the /head tag)? How to create repeatable table with unique ID's using jQuery

I need to create a table structure that can be "copied" and populated with a new set of data. However, each table must have unique IDs for functions that must access them later. For example: <table class="main"> <thead><tr><th class="header"></th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr class="row"><td class="col0"></td><td class="col1"></td></tr> </tbody> </table> My current thought is to use jQuery to load the table from a seperate html file into a variable. Using this saved table I could then create a function that copies it, traverses the table to add an ID to each section where information will need to be appended from a seperate data source, and return this new table. I am new to jQuery and feel like I may be missing an easier/better way to accomplish this. Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. Rowspan not using top row

I don't understand why my column won't span to the top and bottom rows I created. It is supposed to look like the "Today" column is taller on the top and bottom then the other columns. I tried accomplishing this by adding rows above and below it and then using rowspan. For some reason, it only works on the bottom row. It's a lot of code, and I wasn't sure what I should cut without deforming it all or adding a new variable (it needs a fluid height). I have an online presentation to do next week and I have it all ready to go. The website is html and css only (no db), and currently resides on my shared hosting account. Now although my shared hosting is (relatively) reliable, I have noticed that recently they have been making some changes and my website has been unavailable at times. I don't want this to happen to me on the morning of my presentation, so I am asking what is the best way to prepare for such a thing? My domain is www.presentation.mydomain.com and I would like to keep this if possible (even if issues arise). I have been thinking of a few alternatives; host my site on two different domains or servers (but what about domain name)? have a portable XAMPP version on a USB (again, domain name)? possible fail-over site/location? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Update Presentation will be carried out on their laptop, not mine. So I am unable to install any software.

Positioned element adding to total div height [migrated]

I have a 800 x 600 rotatable image with forward and back buttons repositioned to the sides. The height of the div is suppose to be 600px, but the actual height of the div was pushed to 690, including the height of the button image. And the div was blocking a row of clickable menu on top. So I made the div height to 518px and moved top -75px to get the real dimension I want. But I feel dirty doing this... Is there a correct way to do this? Or is this workaround more or less correct? Below is the code. ASP.net Literal or Page altering HTML string, causing formatting issues

We have a service that generates a report (using word templates and a 3rd party library), and then returns a string in HTML. While this HTML isn't great - its formatted correctly in this string. We want this HTML to show up on a page - format intact. What we currently have done is set an ASP.net Literal's text element to this string. While this works, I have noticed that it has reformatted the HTML string slightly. For the most part, it looks like it generated a bunch of new CSS classes, and a new style element in the HTML. This HTML does not exist in the string thats being returned. I could filter all of this back out, but wonder if there is a better way. I assume that the Page itself is altering something. What is the best way to display this raw HTML back to the user? I can't directly use a Response.Write(string), because this page does have a few other controls on it.

I need to create rules for web.config that will rewrite all requests for files with extension .html to .asp and redirect all .asp requests to .html Example: file_xyz.asp rewrites to file_xyz.html directory1/file_xyz.asp rewrites to directory1/file_xyz.html and file_xyz.html redirects to file_xyz.asp directory1/file_xyz.html redirects to directory1/file_xyz.asp What is the syntax for the rule Is this too broad a rule? If I should need for what ever reason to have a physical file such as file_abc.html how do I exclude it from the redirect rule? I am thinking I should just use ISAPI_Rewrite http://www.isapirewrite.com/ there seems to be a ton of resources out there for rewriting with htaccess and very little online help for using IIS 7 URL rewrite. Any thoughts and/or advice Thanks in advance

jQuery using .html & then window.scrollTo

Hello, I'm doing the following: First, inject HTML into the page (a lot) which then increases the window scrollbar: $("#XXXX").html("LOTS OF HTML").show(); Then i want to scroll down to the end of the page: window.scrollTo(0,$(document).height()); Problem is the page never scrolls down. I did some console.logging and the scrollTo is running before the HTML from the inject html() is run. I tried this in the JS which injects the HTML, I then tried doing the scroll inside the HTML inject but that made no difference. Any ideas?

Making Flex HTML Control UnSelectable

I am displaying some HTML text in an Adobe AIR Application that I do not want the user to be able to cut and paste. How do I make the HTML control disallow highlighting of the HTML without disabling the ScrollBars. mouseChildren=false works but disables the scrollbars which is unacceptable. Right now I have: <mx:HTML location="http://dexter/preview.html" width="100%" height="100%" id="PreviewArea" x="0" y="0" tabEnabled="false" tabChildren="false" focusEnabled="false" focusRect="null"/> But it's not working properly either. I have also tried overlaying a disabled transparent text control over the top of the HTML component, but the user is still able to tab to the HTML and use the keyboard controls to copy the text to the clipboard. Any hints?

I am making a maze type of game using javascript and HTML and need some questions answered [on hold]

First off, i am a noob to JavaScript but am willing to learn. :) I found a simple JavaScript moment engine created by another member on this site. Using that i made it so my character can walk around within a rectangle/square shaped room. I want to make it so the character can walk through a "doorway" within a wall to the next room. Either that or make it so if the character moves over a certain image within the room it will take the player to another webpage in which the character "spawns" into the room and so on and so fourth. HTML, CSS: how can I merge these divs in order to use float:left property on their children ?

hi, I've 2 sets of thumbnails and in each set I'm displaying them one nearby each other in 4 columns using float:left. I would like to "merge" the 2 sets (but I cannot change the html code) because I want the thumbnails of the second set floating right after the last thumbnail of the first set. In other terms, if in the last row there are only 2 thumbnails and the last 2 columns are empty, the thumbnails of the second set should fill the empty columns of the last row of the first set.
