  • Mass Port Forwarding?

    Hi I had trouble but I finally port forwarded 21-23 and thus got SSH working on my Ubuntu machine. If I want to do other things with it such as FTP, should I just port forward 1-10000 so I don't have to worry about port forwarding each individual port? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?

  • script to su with password in script without root

    I have scripted a process that involves updating symbolic links on files located on 3 different machines. On those machines exists 4 users each, who each need to have these links updated. Using su, is there a way to pass the password argument to the command on a single line, without invoking sudo as the users will not have admin rights? My only alternative solution at this point is to ssh around, however I would like to be able to do this without hardcoding in a bunch of hosts/ips.

  • Easy way to deploy PHP sites from git

    I'm looking for recommendations on how to automate / simplify deployment from a git repository (github) to a hosting service. The hosting service supports FTP (yuck) / SSH / SFTP access. Any good tools out there to give push-button deployment of new revisions? I know it's not a hard script to write, but when you start thinking about things like roll-back and multiple sites, it gets complicated enough that I'd rather not re-invent the wheel.

    I have multiple IP addresses on the same server and I would like to redirect all outgoing traffic on port 80 to a different IP on the same server just no to use always main IP. Currently I'm using this: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j SNAT --to-source IP; and it works well, but it redirects everything and when I make backups over SSH backup it's failing.   • Gentoo box can't cURL or ping after restarting net.eth1

    Hi all, the following is completely baffling me. We currently have a gentoo box which acts as our LAMP, DNS, DHCP server. This is assigned a static IP on the network. This server is connected directly to the internet via a BT BusinessHub Router. The server is also connected to a patch panel/switch port which connects the remaining office (around 10 PC's) to the server. Everything has been plain sailing until the other day when the server was restarted. For some reason now only portions of network accessibility is available depending on which ethernet device was last restarted. Restarting net.eth0 allows the office server to cURL, ping, etc but stops all networked PC's from accessing the internet. Then restarting net.eth1 restores all internet to the network but stops the server from curling, pinging, etc again. However, even when the server can't ping, curl, etc, I can still remote SSH and remote MySQL connect from the server command line to other external servers that we own. After working a bit lately with Netgears ReadyNAS's units, I have become really spoiled with how easy it was to set up network shares and giving a specific user different levels of network access to a specific share (forbidden access, read, read/write).     Is there a possibility to redirect all traffic to specified hosts behind NAT? For example i have a server, a domain "mydomain.com" and 3 hosts behind NAT. I wish to configure 3 subdomains: host1.mydomain.com host2.mydomain.com host2.mydomain.com and each of them to redirect all ports to specified host in local net. That redirection should provide funcionality like this: http://host1.mydomain.com (can be achieved using apache) ssh [email protected] (???) and other protocols on diferent ports Thanks for any help.

  • Change default root user with a new one on Ubuntu Server

    I have a VPS, until now I used the default root user for SSH access and everything. For security reasons I'd like to use a different user for root, terminal access and sudo operations. So I created another user, gave him the sudo and every other perm. The problem is that all the system files belongs to root. What happens if I set PermitRootLogin No for root? Those files wouldn't be editable by the new root user!

  • isa 2006 blocks outgoing traffic with no rule specified

    I've created a rule near the top, allowing all outgoing traffic from "All Users" from specified IP range to external network. However, connections are blocked sometimes for no apparent reason. For example, one attempt to ssh to an external server would fail, and another immediatelly after that - won't. to the same server! logging shows thoose failed connections as denied, but "rule" column is blank. any suggestions?

  • How to allow unprivileged apache/PHP to do a root task (CentOS)

    I am setting up a sort of personal dropbox for our customers on a CentOS 6.3 machine. The server will be accessible thru SFTP and a proprietary http service base on PHP. This machine will be in our DMZ so it has to be secure. Because of this I have apache running as an unprivileged user, hardened the security on apache, the OS, PHP, applied a lot of filtering in iptables and applied some restrictive TCP Wrappers. Now you might have suspected this one was coming, SELinux is also set to enforcing. I'm setting up PAM to use MySQL so my users in the web application can login. These users will all be in a group that can use SSH only for SFTP and users will be chrooted to their own 'home' folder. To allow this SELinux wants the folders to have the user_home_t tag. Also the parent directory needs to be writable by root only. If these restrictions are not met SELinux will kill the SSH pipe immediately. The files that need to be accessible thru both http and SFTP so I have made a SELinux module to allow Apache to search/attr/read/write etc. to directories with the user_home_dir_t tag. As sftp users are stored in MySQL I want to setup their home dirs upon user creation. This is a problem since Apache has no write access to the /home dir, it's only writable by root since it's required to keep SELinux and OpenSSH happy. Basically I need to let Apache do only a few tasks as root and only within /home. So I need to somehow elevate the privileges temporarily or let root do these tasks for apache instead. What I need to have apache do with root privileges is the following. mkdir /home/userdir/ mkdir /home/userdir/userdir chmod -R 0755 /home/userdir umask 011 /home/userdir/userdir chcon -R -t user_home_t /home/userdir chown -R user:sftp_admin /home/userdir/userdir chmod 2770 /home/userdir/userdir This would create a home for the user, now I have an idea that might work, cron. That would mean the server needs to check for users that have no home every minute, then when creating users the interface would freeze for an average of 30 seconds before the account creation can be confirmed which I do not prefer. Does anybody know if something can be done with sudoers? Or any other idea's are welcome... Thanks for your time!

    VMWare ESXi4 with 2 VM's (FreeBSD-amd64). When doing a reboot on one of the VM's, the reboot is done in normal speed, but after that, the interactive response time on the other gets very slow: pressing return at the command prompt, takes serveral seconds to be exectuted. SSH-ing to the VM machine takes a long time before you are logged in. Only after 20 minutes or so, the situation is normalized. What's the reason and how to remedy?
