• LINQ Generic Query with inherited base class?

  I am trying to write some generic LINQ queries for my entities, but am having issue doing the more complex things. It seems like from that link it's impossible since using a where predicate because entity class doesn't know what any of the properties are until I pass them in. Lastly, I need some way of setting a new object as the return type set to the implementation type, in nhibernate (what I am trying to convert from) it was simply this line that did it: ImplentationType entity = default(ImplentationType); However default is an nhibernate command, how would I do this for LINQ? EDIT: getOne doesn't seem to work even when just going off the base class (this is a partial class of the auto generated LINQ classes). I even removed the generics. I have an arraylist as an element of a class. When i enter: AAA as preName BBB as clubName c d e as Branches Then as a second element www as preName GGG as clubName a b as branches The result is coming like: AAA BBB c,d,e,a,b GGG www c,d,e,a,b Which means ArrayList part of the class is putting it on and on. I tried to use clear() method but caused problems. Any ideas.

• Problem creating calculations 'engine' in two class java calculator

  i have hit a brick wall whilst attempting to create a two class java calculator but have been unsuccessful so far in getting it working. i have the code for an interface which works and displays ok but creating a seperate class 'CalcEngine' to do the actual calculations has proven to be beyond me. I'd appreciate it if someone could kick start things for me and create a class calcEngine which works with the interface class and allows input when from single button i.e. if one is pressed on the calc then 1 displays onscreen. please note i'm not asking someone to do the whole thing for me as i want to learn and i'm confident i can do the rest including addition subtraction etc. once i get over the obstacle of getting the two classes to communicate. any and all assistance would be very much appreciated.   Hello, Im having an issue getting json working with the struts-jquery-plugin-2.1.0 I have included the struts2-json-plugin-2.1.8.1 in my classpath as well. Im sure that I have my struts-jquery-plugin configured correctly because the grid loads, but doesnt load the data its supposed to get from the action class that has been json'ized. The documentation with the json plugin and the struts-jquery plugin leaves ALOT of gaps that I cant even find with examples/tutorials, so I come to the community at stackoverflow. My action class has a property called gridModel thats a List with a basic POJO called Customer. Customer is a pojo with one property, id. I have a factory that supplies the populated List to the actions List property which i mentioned called gridModel.   I have a php script that takes in some XML data and parses it, displaying various bits of information I pull out of it. This has been working fine for over 6 months, until recently it now fails mysteriously on a certain tag. The XML is generated from an outside source(a conferencing bridge), so I have no control over how it is built. I have put the xml through an online validator and it returned no errors. The code also works fine when I connect to another conferencing bridge and get the same output. I have been using XMLReader class so far and tried switching to SmipleXML, but it fails when I create the SimpleXML object using the data. • Break a class in twain, or impose an interface for restricted access?

  What's the best way of partitioning a class when its functionality needs to be externally accessed in different ways by different classes? Hopefully the following example will make the question clear :) I have a Java class which accesses a single location in a directory allowing external classes to perform read/write operations to it. Read operations return usage stats on the directory (e.g. available disk space, number of writes, etc.); write operations, obviously, allow external classes to write data to the disk. These methods always work on the same location, and receive their configuration (e.g. which directory to use, min disk space, etc.) from an external source (passed to the constructor). This class looks something like this: public class DiskHandler { public DiskHandler(String dir, int minSpace) { ... } public void writeToDisk(String contents, String filename) { int space = getAvailableSpace(); ... } public void getAvailableSpace() { ... } } There's quite a bit more going on, but this will do to suffice. This class needs to be accessed differently by two external classes. One class needs access to the read operations; the other needs access to both read and write operations. public class DiskWriter { DiskHandler diskHandler; public DiskWriter() { diskHandler = new DiskHandler(...); } public void doSomething() { diskHandler.writeToDisk(...); } } public class DiskReader { DiskHandler diskHandler; public DiskReader() { diskHandler = new DiskHandler(...); } public void doSomething() { int space = diskHandler.getAvailableSpace(...); } } At this point, both classes share the same class, but the class which should only read has access to the write methods. Solution 1 I could break this class into two. By breaking apart the functionality into read/write classes, they both are concerned with the directory and both need to be instantiated with their respective values. In essence, I don't really care to duplicate the concerns. Solution 2 I could implement an interface which only provisions read operations, and use this when a class only needs access to those methods. The interface might look something like this: public interface Readable { int getAvailableSpace(); } The Reader class would instantiate the object like this: Readable diskReader; public DiskReader() { diskReader = new DiskHandler(...); } This solution seems brittle, and prone to confusion in the future. It doesn't guarantee developers will use the correct interface in the future. Any changes to the implementation of the DiskHandler could also need to update the interface as well as the accessing classes. I like it better than the previous solution, but not by much. Frankly, neither of these solutions seems perfect, but I'm not sure if one should be preferred over the other. I really don't want to break the original class up, but I also don't know if the interface buys me much in the long run. Are there other solutions I'm missing?

• Reasonable automatic HTML to PDF conversion (in UNIX/Linux environment)

  Is there a way to generate PDF documents from HTML files automatically in Linux where the PDF offers some kind of reasonable level of resemblance to the input file? A command-line tool - as opposed to an interactive GUI of some kind - is key. I have tried htmldoc and some related cousins, of course. But these tools are hopelessly stone-age; htmldoc doesn't support CSS at all. You won't find a lot of HTML documents these days that don't have at least some CSS styling. I don't really care about stupid effects or minor embellishments, but the issue is that CSS is at the core of most layouts these days; not many folks are using 6 layers of nested tables anymore. So, if the conversion tool has no grasp of CSS whatsoever, it's not just a matter of "the document doesn't look quite right"; it is likely to not meet the minimum standard of usability at all. It has been suggested to me by some folks to try to use the Gecko rendering engine to generate images that can be converted to PDFs, but I have no idea how one would go about doing this, let alone easily. I have no trouble believing that there are good commercial tools that do this, but I'm really looking for an open-source package if possible, as the endeavour itself is an open-source one and doesn't pay.   I'll try keep it short. Here's the scenario: We have employees all over the world performing similar work i.e. research, generating powerpoint slides, word documents, graphics, etc. Many times a lot of this previous work can be reused for another future project. The current arrangement is email and phone calls which as you would agree is quick if you know where to look but otherwise archaic and very very inefficient. So I am looking for software that will allow me to do the following: Tag files e.g. an investor presentation on cellphone usage in kenya would be tagged investor, cellphone, kenya Manage references e.g. if we read something on the internet, should be able to paste that link in some fashion and tag it as above. Preferably cloud based so that it can be accessed by anybody and additionally would be nice (though NOT must) to have access levels (director, manager, everyone) A nice interface that non technically savvy folks can warm up to ;) A desktop app would be handy so that people don't always have to click upload or something A tree based system is inefficient in this case because content is usually linked across branches and also people might not quite agree on one format of a tree. Tagging works around this very nicely. What I have considered so far: Evernote (for its more professional look) Springpad (for its versatility with content) Mendeley (this is a research manager and in some ways ideal, but i fear its limited to PDFs) The goal is that when somebody wants to look for a document, they don't have to ask a colleague, they can just search with keywords and all relevant information shows up. • Amazon S3 - Storage Class and Server Side Encryption

  Ahhh! I am using Amazon S3 for some low price storage to clear down out SAN. I created the bucket and created a root folder. I set the storage class to standard and server side encryption AES. I started a copy job to move the files, some files copied over and i checked the files: Reduced Redundancy Encryption set to none WTF? So i deleted all files and folders. I manuallyed created the folder structure and again set the storage class and encryption level. I coped some files and bamm, still showing (at a file level as Reduced and no encryption). So my question is this, is it really raid'd and encrypted just not showing it properly (as the root folder is, how can the file not be??) or (b) am i being a huge tool and missing something?

• How to I prevent decimal truncation in Word 2003 when a document is auto populated via a Web Service

  I have a document template which is being auto populated via an external web service. The incoming data exists as a currency (e.g. 3.10) but when it is passed into the Word Document template the variable is truncated to remove any trailing 0's. I need the number to always appear with 2 decimals, even if they are both 0's. This is with the 2003 version of Word, I have not tested with other versions since all of our document templates need to be generated using that version of Word. I feel like this can be done with a Macro or a VB script but I have a very small amount of time & no experience with these tools - Any help is greatly appreciated!
