• Debian Stable vs Ubuntu LTS for Server?

  Quick question: Which is a better platform for a professional use server? Debian Stable or Ubuntu LTS? The third party software we plan to use, works on both. Which one is better on it own merits? Take into account things like the kernel (Ubuntu for example has its own custom kernel for servers), and other Ubuntu specific customizations. I keep switching back and forth, and I need to decide so I can recommend one or the other to a client. Right now, I think I am going to choose Debian Stable. Recently, I have had Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04.1 have a few strange issues... I have Ubuntu setup to do automatic updates via a simple script, and every few months or so, libapache2-mod-php5 gets removed because of conflicting packages... Thereby causing me to loose the php function of the web server. Debian Stable has not done anything like this.

• How can I remove packages using preseed?

  I'm setting up an automated "no questions asked" preseed system and using Dustin Kirkland's server preseed as an example. He uses the following line to install three packages as part of the automated install: d-i pkgsel/include string byobu vim openssh-server I am looking for the inverse of this, basically be able to remove packages as part of the automated install. I've checked the Installation Guide I've checked this example preseed, but it's not clear if this is the canonical list of every single option available. I am thinking I need to to use d-i preseed/late_command string apt-remove packagename to clean up stuff I don't want when the install is done, but I am not sure

• Where do service implementations fit into the Microsoft Application Architecture guidelines?

  The guidelines discuss the service layer with its service interfaces and data/message/fault contracts. They also discuss the business layer with its logic/workflow components and entities as well as the 'optional' application facade. What is unclear still to me after studying this guide is where the implementations of the service interfaces belong. Does the application facade in the business layer implement these interfaces, or does a separate 'service facade' exist to make calls to the business layer and it's facade/raw components? (With the former, there would be less seemingly trivial calls to yet another layer, though with the latter I could see how the service layer could remove the concerns of translating business entities to data contracts from the business layer.)

• Switching between ethernet interfaces on Ubuntu 10.04 SERVER

  I have ubuntu 10.04 "SERVER" installed on a system with two ehternet ports. I use only one at a time. I wanted to know if I can switch between ports without using ifup and ifdown every time. That means when I connect my Lan cable on eth0 it should work and it does. But when I disconnect the lan cable and connect it on eth1 I have to ifdown eth0 and only then it works. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have configured both eth0 and eth1. there is no problem other than I have to switch it manually with ifdown and ifup everytime. Please guide. Thanks in advance

• C# Tip - Rendering HTML in a Gridview cell

  Just a quick tip for working with the gridview in ASP.Net.  If your data column contains HTML text, you've probably seen something like this in your gridview after pulling the data: <font color="red">First Item</font><br/><font color="green">Second Item</font><br/><font color="blue">Third Item</font> To have the relevant column render in HTML, just go to your gridview property pages, find the column you need rendered in HTML, and click 'convert this Field into a TemplateField'.  The result is that as a template field, HTML within your bound data value will be rendered properly.  So our example above would transform into: First Item Second Item Third Item I primarily use this technique for enabling HTML content in comment fields, and to insert line breaks when building the data for these fields. • Sending Outlook Invites

  Sending an Outlook invite for a meeting (also referred to as S+ in Microsoft) is a simple thing to get right if you just run the quick mental check below, which is driven by visual cues in the Outlook UI. I know that some folks don’t do this often or are new to Outlook, so if you know one of those folks share this blog post with them and if they read nothing else ask them to read step 7. Add on the To line the folks that you want to be at the meeting. Indicate optional invitees. Click on the “To” button to bring up the dialog that lets you move folks to be Optional (you can also do this from the Scheduling Assistant). Set the Reminder according to the attendee that has to travel the most. 5 minutes is the minimum. Use the Response Options and uncheck the "Request Response" if your event is going ahead regardless of who can make it or not, i.e. if everyone is optional. Don’t force every recipient to make an extra click, instead make the extra click yourself - you are the organizer. Add a good subject Make the subject such that just by reading it folks know what the meeting is about. Examples, e.g. "Review…", "Finalize…", "XYZ sync up" If this is only between two people and what is commonly referred to as a one to one, the subject would be something like "MyName/YourName 1:1" Write the subject in such a way that when the recipient sees this on their calendar among all the other items, they know what this meeting is about without having to see location, recipients, or any other information about the invite. Add a location, typically a meeting room. If recipients are from different buildings, schedule it where the folks that are doing the other folks a favor live. Otherwise schedule it wherever the least amount of people will have to travel. If you send me an invite to come to your building, and there is more of us than you, you are silently sending me the message that you are doing me a favor so if you don’t want to do that, include a note of why this is in your building, e.g. "Sorry we are slammed with back to back meetings today so hope you can come over to our building". If this is in someone's office, the location would be something like "Moth's office (7/666)" where in parenthesis you see the office location. If some folks are remote in another building/country, or if you know you picked a time which wasn't free for everyone, add an Online option (click the Lync Meeting button). Add a date and time. This MUST be at a time that is showing on the recipients’ calendar as FREE or at worst TENTATIVE. You can check that on the Scheduling Assistant. The reality is that this is not always possible, so in that case you MUST say something about it in the Invite Body, e.g. "Sorry I can see X has a conflict, but I cannot find a better slot", or "With so many of us there are some conflicts and I cannot find a better slot so hope this works", or "Apologies but due to Y we must have this meeting at this time and I know there are some conflicts, hope you can make it anyway". When you do that, I better not be able to find a better slot myself for all of us, and of course when you do that you have implicitly designated the Busy folks as optional. Finally, the body of the invite. This has the agenda of the meeting and if applicable the courtesy apologies due to messing up steps 6 & 7. This should not be the introduction to the meeting, in other words the recipients should not be surprised when they see the invite and go to the body to read it. Notifying them of the meeting takes place via separate email where you explain the purpose and give them a heads up that you'll be sending an invite. That separate email is also your chance to attach documents, don’t do that as part of the invite. TIP: If you have sent mail about the meeting, you can then go to your sent folder to select the message and click the "Meeting" button (Ctrl+Alt+R). This will populate the body with the necessary background, auto select the mandatory and optional attendees as per the TO/CC line, and have a subject that may be good enough already (or you can tweak it). Long to write, but very quick to remember and enforce since most of it is common sense and the checklist is driven of the visual cues in the UI you use to send the invite. • Multi Seat Ubuntu 10.10

  Hi I was hoping to have a 2 seat setup. One will be for my TV just going to run Boxee. The other is for my main Desktop. I've been looking for a good guide to help me navigate this, I'd like to use ubuntu 10.10. I am assuming it's just a case of getting a box + 2 graphics adaptors and 2 usb mice and keyboards, one of which will be bluetooth for the TV. I can't seem to find much documentation on this idea. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also I am assuming that this is all possible with a standard ubuntu install, but with some additional configuration. • Stop Screenlets from minimizing

  I've setup my screenlets exactly the way that I want them, but I don't have a quick access to any of them. The screenlet config offers me the following : keep above,below, sticky, locky, widget. Out of these only treat as Widget seems to be of any use here. I just looked at this in detail and thought it was what I was looking for. It might have been a workaround for the issue (instead of minimizing I would just press F9. But this means that the widget hides itself from the normal desktop, which is not what I want. What I want is that on pressing Ctrl+Alt+D or Super+D, I should see the desktop with my screenlets there. I don't want them to minimize with the rest of the windows. As a final struggle, I've thought of a solution using compiz to declare the screenlet windows as non-minimizing, but surely there must be a better way than that. (Instructions for this would be helpful as well - I'm not sure what to enter in the rule matches)

• Are there existing FOSS component-based frameworks?

  The component based game programming paradigm is becoming much more popular. I was wondering, are there any projects out there that offer a reusable component framework? In any language, I guess I don't care about that. It's not for my own project, I'm just curious. Specifically I mean are there projects that include a base Entity class, a base Component class, and maybe some standard components? It would then be much easier starting a game if you didn't want to reinvent the wheel, or maybe you want a GraphicsComponent that does sprites with Direct3D, but you figure it's already been done a dozen times. A quick Googling turns up Rusher. Has anyone heard of this / does anyone use it? If there are no popular ones, then why not? Is it too difficult to make something like this reusable, and they need heavy customization? In my own implementation I found a lot of boilerplate that could be shoved into a framework.

• Unit testing - getting started

  I am just getting started with unit testing but I am not sure if I really understand the point of it all. I read tutorials and books on it all, but I just have two quick questions: I thought the purpose of unit testing is to test code we actually wrote. However, to me it seems that in order to just be able to run the test, we have to alter the original code, at which point we are not really testing the code we wrote but rather the code we wrote for testing. Most of our codes rely on external sources. Upon refactoring our code however, even it would break the original code, our tests still would run just fine, since the external sources are just muck-ups inside our test cases. Doesn't it defeat the purpose of unit testing? Sorry if I sound dumb here, but I thought someone could enlighten me a bit. Thanks in advance.

• OpenSSL installed, but Ruby unable to require it

  I'm trying to setup github-pages on my Ubuntu laptop, and following the guide provided by Github I have to install the bundler package; giving the command ~$ gem install bundler returns me this error. ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::Exception) Unable to require openssl, install OpenSSL and rebuild ruby (preferred) or use non-HTTPS sources Then I have installed OpenSSL, launched the command to update software and stuff and tried again to install bundler, but the error kept showing. How can I fix this? Is there any specific command to rebuild ruby making it aware about the fact that openSSL is now installed?

• Migrating from GlassFish 2.x to 3.1.x

  With clustering now available in GlassFish since version 3.1 (our Spring 2011 release), a good number of folks have been looking at migrating their existing GlassFish 2.x-based clustered environments to a more recent version to take advantage of Java EE 6, our modular design, improved SSH-based provisioning and enhanced HA performance. The GlassFish documentation set is quite extensive and has a dedicated Upgrade Guide. It obviously lists a number of small changes such as file layout on disk (mostly due to modularity), some option changes (grizzly, shoal), the removal of node agents (using SSH instead), new JPA default provider name, etc... There is even a migration tool (glassfish/bin/asupgrade) to upgrade existing domains. But really the only thing you need to know is that each module in GlassFish 3 and beyond is responsible for doing its part of the upgrade job which means that the migration is as simple as copying a 2.x domain directory to the domains/ directory and starting the server with asadmin start-domain --upgrade. Binary-compatible products eligible for such upgrades include Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 Update 2 as well as version 2.1 and 2.1.1 of Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server.

• AGPL License - does it apply in this scanerio?

  There is an AGPLv3 based software (Client) that makes web service calls (using SOAP) to another software (Server - commercial, cloud based). There is no common code or any connection whatsoever between these two except for the web service calls being made. My questions - Does the Server need to be AGPL too? I guess not - but would like to confirm. Let us say the end point URL for the Server can be configured on the Client side (by editing an XML file) to connect it to different Servers (again, there is no connection other than the webservice calls being made) does it require any of these Servers being AGPL? Are there any issues in running the Client as a DLL that is loaded by other commercial applications on users' desktops? Does it require these other applications also to be AGPL? Appreciate your quick response. Pluto!

  I've seen a few pages that have a section with "Popular searches for this page" and then have the search terms in a link pointing back to the same page (e.g. http://theenglishchillicompany.co.uk/the-complete-chilli-pepper-book-a-gardeners-guide-to-choosing-growing-preserving-and-cooking/) I assume they are doing it for SEO purposes (with more links to the page with the desired search terms). Does this make a difference? It seems strange that a link on page A to page A would be counted! Am I wrong?
