• How to consistently enable screen sharing with iChat

  I am unable to consistently get screen sharing in iChat to work. When I select an online buddy, under the Buddies menu the options "Share my screen with Bob" and "Ask to Share Bob's Screen" are disabled. Sometimes starting a chat with that person will enable the screen sharing but often not. Once its enabled it works fine but I have no idea what the key is to getting it enabled. It seems fairly random when it works. This is over the public internet using Google Talk. Both ends are running OSX 10.5.

  Is there some Live Linux distribution (on CD, DVD or USB), which allow one to use specific xorg.conf file, i.e. specific X11 configuration? The problem I am trying to solve is to find Linux Live distribution for web browsing which would work well with NEC LCD 22WV monitor. It is supposedly DDCCCI capable, but X.Org X Window System autoconfiguration fails to detect proper modeline, and uses fallback 800x600 screen resolution, instead of preferred screen resolution of 1680x1050.

• Can I set up a separate RAID 5 devices?

  I have a GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 motherboard in my system (Windows 7 64 bit) and currently have a Western Digital SATA 10k RPM drive in it. Is it possible to add three more SATA drives to make a single RAID 5 device that is separate from the current 10k rpm drive that I have in it? Once I enable RAID for the SATA drives, I am not required to make all of the drives part of the RAID volume am I? I can have separate RAID'ed and non-RAID'ed volumes can't I?

• Remote Desktop closes with Fatal Error (Error Code: 5)

  We have one PC (Windows XP SP3) that we can not log onto using a Remote Desktop session. Logging on to the PC directly (sitting in front of it using the connected keyboard and monitor) work fine. From a second PC (tried a number of different ones but all Windows XP SP3) I run 'mstsc' and type in PC name to connect to. This shows the login box which we can enter the correct login details and click OK. Within a few second we get an error: Title: Fatal Error (Error Code:5) Error: Your Remote Desktop session is about to end. This computer might be low on virtual memory. Close your other programs, and then try connecting to the remote computer again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support. None of the computers we are using are low on memory (2Gb+) and we let windows manage the virtual memory side of things. We do not see this with any other PC and do use Remote Desktop in meeting rooms to connect to user PCs with no problems.

• why does chkdsk always report errors on a bad shutdown

  Once in a while, Windows XP hangs on my laptop (usually when going into standby or hibernate and occasionally on startup) and I have to forcefully poweroff. Ususally chkdsk never runs automatically (I thought it should know that the partitions have nit been unmounted and do that). I religiously run chkdsk without /F after bad shutdowns like this, and invariably it reports that the drive has unfixed errors and must be checked with /F and I do that, and more often than not, the chdsk that runs on startup does not report fixing anything. I have had times in the past (and not only just on this system) when not running chkdsk leads to some strange errors like files not opening even though they exist and inability to save certain files, so I make it a point to always chkdsk after bad shutdown. I never understood why this is : Isnt the whole point of a journalling filesystem like NTFS to avoid file system corruption and endless chkdsks? I even tried once disabling write caching to see if it made any difference, but to no avail....

• Everything on hard drive suddenly vanished without explanation, but the drive seems otherwise functional

  Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Custom-built desktop I have a new desktop that I built a few months ago that has a four-year-old WD hard drive and a two-year-old drive. I had set it up so that the newer drive had Windows and most of my files on it while the older drive had my music library, some movies and games, and a backup of all of my documents. About a month ago, I installed some new case fans and, in the process, I temporarily unplugged my hard drive (while the computer was off of course - I took all the necessary precautions) for wire management. I plugged it back in, and didn't really think anything of it. At around that time, however, I noticed that my older hard drive wasn't showing up in Windows Explorer anymore but I didn't really have time to check into it (I had just started college) and I'm finally getting a chance to now. That drive doesn't show up in Windows Explorer at all but it does show up in Disk Management. That screen shows the following: http://puu.sh/17mMN Any idea what happened? • Windows 7 cannot view FAT32 formatted bootable usb drive

  I'm having some issue where when I run bootsect with a command line of "bootsect.exe /nt52 : /force /mbr", then Windows 7 (the comp I'm running bootsect on) can no longer view the contents of the usb drive. Explorer tries to look at it, and then fails, and I can't even correctly eject the drive, when I try, it does nothing until I yank it out, and then I get some errors. Bootsect reports success on writing the volume and the drive data to make it bootable, but it doesn't boot after copying on the necessary files (files from a created ISO, it works when it is created on XP). But this may be that I'm not following the same instructions as when building it on XP since some of the command don't seem to always work correctly. The drive is formatted to FAT32 (necessary I think, cause I'm installing a custom version of Win XP embedded). Any ideas? Or perhaps a good or automated way to load a usb with a custom version of win xp and make it bootable from Win 7? I am having some issues, for instance, "ufdprep.exe" rarely works when I'm running it from Windows 7, I don't know why.

• How can I make my PCI-E graphics card visible to Ubuntu when the motherboard has integrated graphics

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first: Integrated graphics PCI graphics PCI-Express graphics (PEG) I set the BIOS on PEG, but I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.) I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one. Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says Current usage: Unknown There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset! Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power. It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector. The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS. My question: how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

• Ubuntu NBR karmic boot freezes at fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16

  Hi all, I have a netbook (emachine e250 - equivalent to an acer aspire one) and I have Ubunutu NBR 9.10 installed on it. Every other cold boot freezes at the following error message: "fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16" There is no disk activity, no activity what so ever. I have left the machine sit for over an hour and nothing. It takes a couple of hard resets to be able to boot properly. Once it boots everything works great (wireless, suspend/resume, etc.)! I have spent the last couple of weeks researching the problem and the only thing that seems to work is setting nolapic in the boot string in grub - it boots every time. Unfortunately, nolapic disables the second core and causes problems with suspend resume. At first I thought it was an fsck problem with the first partition on the hard disk as it is a hidden ntfs partition containing the windows xp recover information. So in /etc/fstab I set the partition so that it would be ignored by fsck. This didn't seem to do anything. I have these partitions: /dev/sda1 - an ntfs recovery partition /dev/sda2 - /boot /dev/sda3 - swap /dev/sda5 - / /dev/sda6 - /home I am running kernel version 2.6.31-19-generic and have all the patches (as indicated by update manager). I also have no splash screen so I can see the boot progress. I have only been using NBR since January, I have been using Ubuntu on my desktop since last June (2009-06). What logs should I be looking at? Is there a log for failed boots? Thanks, Troy

  I failed with loading ISO image (non-distro) from GRUB2 from USB stick, but found the way how I can boot the GRUB4DOS and then load the image from there. However, it doesn't work all the time and the questions is WHY it doesn't? Environment and loading process: We need to have EFI machine, USB stick, booting ISO, GRUB2 and GRUB4DOS. Last 3 on USB stick. Boot: USB - EFI loader - GRUB2 - GRUB4DOS - ISO image Configuration files To boot GRUB4DOS I use this from grub.cfg: menuentry "image.iso" { linux /syslinux/grub.exe --config-file="/menu.lst" } My menu.lst is here: timeout 20 default 0 title image.iso find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd //image.iso map --heads=0 --sectors-per-track=0 //image.iso (hd32) map --hook chainloader (hd32) This works perfectly with Legacy machines. However, when I come to GRUB4DOS, I don't see the menu with image.iso, I see only GRUB command line. That means that my menu.lst didn't load. Why is it like this? Background and ideas I have an idea that GRUB4DOS doesn't recognize my USB stick as a device. I tried the command find and got (hd0,0), (hd0,1), (hd0,2), (rd). When I tried to set root to any of these devices I don't see fat file system, how it was with Legacy machines. The root device is (hd0,0), which has ntfs file system which should be partition with Windows. EFI machines support only GRUB2, so I can't boot GRUB4DOS straight away. Please, don't suggest anything like this, because my image doesn't have kernel.   Everytime I boot my Linux system, I get these errors while ALSA boots. Despite these, the sound still works, so these are more of an annoyance than anything. How do I stop these occuring?   I've just recently moved across town. Previously, I had Dynamic DNS set up so I could remotely connect to my desktop (primarily to use TightVNC). My ISP was Comcast and I'm in the Denver, Colorado area. Currently, I'm still with Comcast and still in Denver. My router connects to the internet just fine and my Dynamic DNS record over at DynDNS did get updated with my router's current external IP address. So my router, DynDNS, and public DNS records all agree what my IP address is. However, I can't actually connect to anything from the outside world. That device seems to not respond to PING but does forward it along when I'm going outwards. But it looks like it eats it when the request is coming in. It's hard to prove that from these logs but I'm assuming that's the case because my router used to accept connections from the outside and I haven't changed anything on it.

My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail. What's the safest way to deal with this? The particular printer I am using doesn't automatically check the paper size of the document - it always defaults to A4 (letter) size paper unless told otherwise. I need to go into the printer settings and tell the printer to use A3 size paper. A batch printing utility like DarkStorm's Batch Print Handler would be good for this. However this particular utility doesn't support changing the paper size settings or other printer settings. How can I go about batch printing these PDFs with a particular paper size?

  To see more information in Windows Explorer property pages and menus about Matroska Video (.mkv) files, similar to what one can see when selecting native Windows media (.avi, .asf, .wmv or even just plain old mpg) files, Matroska links (from http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html) to a download of the MatroskaProp shell extension (http://www.jory.info/serendipity/archives/14-MatroskaProp-2.8-Released.html). It used to work for me under Windows XP 32-bit. Now I have Windows 7 x64, and downloaded, installed and ran it. Configuration and settings page is fine. But it does not seem to actually register any shell extension. Nothing is added to Explorer windows, menus or property pages when selecting .mkv or .mks files). I tried calling the register hook manually using regsvr32.dll, that again invoked the configuration window and let me set all options, and when confirming even said the registration succeeded, but seems to have had no effect. In the registry I cannot find any traces of the shell extension being installed. Can this extension be made to work under Windows 7 or x64 systems? Are there known problems with installing this or other old shell extensions on x64, or on Windows 7?

  I bought an Asus Lion Square compatible with a AMD Athlon II X3 435 Socket AM3 processor? I know strictly speaking, the Lion Square specifies AM2 but I'm a little confused since AM2 and AM3 are suppose to be socket compatible (I'm a little confused here as well but I assume it means an AM3 board will support AM2/AM2+ CPUs). However, will there be a problem with chip height and spacing? Or do people have experience asking ASUS for a standoff adapter?
