• Laptop LCD sometimes stops working on reboot. Please help.

  I have a Gateway P-6831FX Laptop with Vista Ultimate. The Laptop LCD will sometimes not come on after I reboot the computer. I don't even close the lid and it happens. It isn't dim, it doesn't come on at all. No posting of CMOS (BIOS), nothing. Please note... this happens sometimes, not every time. Frustrating! When plugged into an external monitor, which works fine, Vista display properties can't even "sense" the laptop LCD. I try to enable the laptop LCD for dual display, turning on the laptop LCD, and it does nothing. It's like the laptop LCD is not even there. Manually taking a magnet in my hand to the laptop lid sensing switch (the sensor that turns off display/sleep mode when you close lid), sometimes causes the LCD backlight to "turn on" but not display any images. By "turn on" I mean I can see the screen backlight turn on to a 'dark gray' screen instead of pitch black. Subsequent reboot the laptop display is not working again! Here are the facts: Only happens at random and only after a reboot. Waking from Sleep mode isn't a problem. Pressing F4 function key for dual display does nothing when this happens. Closing lid doesn't seem to be related. (unless it is only after reboot.) using external magnet from laptop screen sensor sometimes triggers backlight to turn on but reboot back to square one with no LCD display. an external display always works fine. I have taken apart LCD, checked all wires and ribbons for loose connections or damage. I have replaced the Inverter. It doesn't seem to be heat related as I can put in sleep mode and resume fine when very hot. (external monitor works fine too). Sometimes the screen works fine as if there is not a problem at all. Even after a reboot... This is random. Any ideas out there? If it is a bad part... which one? The LCD seems to be fine. What are the odds of 2 bad inverters? The backlight is fine. The LCD wires/ribbons seem to be fine. I am at a loss. No warranty left and Gateway tech support is clueless. Thanks for any feedback that might help.

  I upgraded to Wndows 7 and have a problem with graphics with my NVIDIA GeoForce Go 7600 not displaying properly. Also the Base System Drivers have yellow flags near them and it states that the The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver. Any clues??? Please help!

  Hi there. When I install Windows Vista/7, I move some of my user folders onto a new partition (i.e. Documents, Musics, Pictures, etc.). This does not include moving the whole User directory, just some of the data folders. %AppData% remains in it's default location (%SystemDrive%\Users). I'm getting tired of manually moving each of these folder's by changing their location under the properties dialog. Does anyone know of a way that I can script this to apply to the folders that I wish?

• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed one of the applications (Appcelerator Titanium). Didn't seem to help. • Will this RAID5 setup work (3TB Seagate Barracudas + Adaptec RAID 6405)?

  As the title states, will this RAID combo work, and if not what needs to be changed? Overall opinions would be most helpful. I currently run a small file server of about 5TB or so. I keep outgrowing my needs and need to build a RAID setup that will allow me to expand as needed. I am new to RAID setups, especially one of the scale I have currently planned out, but I have being doing some research for the past couple of weeks and have come up with a build. Ideally, I'd have the setup completely built, but I'd like to keep the total cost around $1k and can't afford to go above $1.5k, so unfortunately that's not an option. 2 of my current drives are WD Caviar Blacks 2TB; however, I have recently learned that due to the lack of TLER those drives are awful for any RAID setup other than 0 or 1. That being said, my third drive is a Seagate Barracuda 3TB (ST300DM001) and I have found a RAID controller that states it supports it, so I'd like to use this same type of drive, if possible. Have any of you had any experience using this drive or a similar one in a RAID5 configuration? The manufacturer states that it supports it, but knowing that it is not an enterprise drive, I am slightly concerned that it could drop out of the array. I would just go with enterprise drives, but those are about double in cost...   I have an old madCatz racing wheel for the playstation 2. The gas and brake pedals are connected to the wheel by a serial port. I just bought a usb racing wheel for the PC but it lacks pedals so I wanted to see if I could get these old madCatz working. I just installed the serial port in my motherboard, but now I have a problem with software. Nothing will recognize the pedal. I was wondering if there are any programs or drivers out there that will allow me to set the pedals up to work. Any advice would be appreciated!

• Restore monitor detection to one only or restore start menu to bottom

  I have a co-worker that is no longer able to see his start menu. He used to have it pinned to the left edge of his screen. I tried to troubleshoot it a bit and discovered if we do Windows + R then "cmd" [enter] the command prompt opens (but we don't see the start menu or run box), meaning the start menu is somewhere, just off screen. Restarting doesn't help. Is there some way to force Windows to think it only has a single monitor? It seems to "think" it has two but there's only one and we can get the Start menu back. Or, is there a way to restore the start menu to the bottom? Additional info We are able to right-click the desktop for display settings, etc. We can also get into Windows Explorer (via Ctrl + E) so if we need any of that to restore settings we can do it.

• Add Network Printer drivers in Windows 7/Server 2008 R2?

  I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 / Windows 2008 R2 workstation that I just installed. I need to add a printer that is shared on the network from a 32bit Windows 2000 print server. This is an HP LaserJet 5Si printer, the drivers for which HP tells me are automatically built into Windows 7/R2. However, whenever I connect to the printer or try to add it, I get the following screen: Upon clicking OK, I get this screen asking me to locate the driver: How can I possibly locate a driver that is SUPPOSED TO BE NATIVELY SUPPORTED on Windows 7/R2? The tough part is that this printer is one of many shared on a server and does not have a direct IP address. Even worse: I have no access to the print server so I cannot put the 64 bit drivers on there. Any ideas? UPDATE: HP doesn't make a Vista driver either. It claims it is natively supported by Vista and 7, which is true because I am able to create a local printer on a fake tcp/ip port and Windows lets me pick the proper driver. However, when adding from the network, Windows does not let me select a driver and demands an INF. I tried searching the entire sub-structure of the C:\Windows directory and could not find any INF files that contain HP information. The INF might be located somewhere in the Windows installation DVD, but all the files on the DVD are compressed and unrecognizable. UPDATE #2 I installed the proper printer driver as a local printer (with no printer attached) and it installed. However, this did not change the fact that it STILL asks me to provide drivers when connecting to the networked printer.

  Hi, I have a strange problem (or at least seems strange to me) the below are IP configurations for two laptops on my home network which consists of a main router 192.168.11.1 and a connected wireless router (i know this can cause problems but has always worked until I got the win7 machine) at 192.168.11.2 with DHCP disabled. Laptop 1 - Win XP IP: Dynamically assigned by main router default gateway: 192.168.11.1 (main router) This machine gets perfect connectivity. Laptop 2 - Win7 IP: dynamically assigned by main router Default Gateway: 192.168.11.2 THIS IS THE PROBLEM... I cannot seem to get this machine to default to the main router for the gateway UNLESS I go to a static configuration which I would rather not do since I regularly go between my home and public networks. Why is my Win7 machine not finding the main gateway the same way that the other laptop is? I believe that the rest of my setup is fine as it has always worked and it works perfectly when set as static ip and gateway. Please help! Thanks

• RAID 0 performance gains?

  I'm building a new computer over the summer. I'm fairly competent in computer hardware, and am thus building the computer from scratch. I have everything planned out, but I was wondering about RAID. I asked which RAID I should use earlier, but now that it's pretty clear that RAID 1 isn't really that great, I think I'll go with cloud-backup instead of disk-redundancy. However, I still face a choice: use two 1TB drives as two 1TB drives, or combine them into a RAID 0 striped array. Is there any performance gain at all? I know that if one drive dies, everything is gone, so is the performance gain worth it? I'm building a pretty advanced computer, with SLI video cards and a fast CPU, so I'm thinking RAID 0 would give me some good hard drive performance. From your experience, is RAID 0 viable?

Apparently this is being developed but until it is does anyone know how to disable this in Windows XP. Chrome on the Mac and Ubuntu doesn't do it so I assume it is down to a system setting that by default doesn't print header/footer information unless software over-rides this?

I have tried multiple browsers and i have the latest version of flash and video drivers. I have tried re-installing flash and disabling hardware acceleration. The problem occurs on youtube and hulu. This is a clean install on a Core 2 duo with 4GB RAM and an Nvidia 8400M GS.

• Replacement mouse "feet"?

  The plastic skid pad "feet" on the bottom of my Logitech G9 mouse (which I love!) are getting rather worn down -- to the point that the outer shell of the mouse scrapes on the mousepad a bit. I've had the mouse for about ~2 years now so it does get a lot (I mean lot of use). But, I hate to buy a new mouse when I only need replacement "feet". Where can I obtain replacement mouse feet? Is this even possible?

• Restrict iPhone messaging to corprate osx server messaging service

  I have not found much information about this. We have company owned iPhone and iPads. We would like our employees to be able to message but require all messaging traffic to go through our local mountain lion osx server (not setup yet). How would the phones and server need to be configured to accomplish this. Specifically is it possible to restrict the user from adding additional accounts? How about another app that would use the server? Do you know of any good documentation on setting up this service on osx server and iPhone? I am open to other solutions, opensource messaging servers.....

• Chrome: Saved username/password filled in incognito mode

  If I open an incognito window in Google Chrome and go to a webpage where Chrome has a saved username and password from (for example the login form on http://gmail.com), I see that my username and password are automatically filled in. Does that mean that I am not really incognito? Can the website see my username even if I don't explicitly log in? Or is there some mechanism behind the scenes that prevents the webpage from grabbing auto-filled values unless I actually log in? Clarification: Stored usernames (and passwords) are a lot like cookies: your unique identifier linked to a certain site, stored locally in your browser, available to the site when you open it. When you go incognito you ask your browser not to identify you to the sites you visit. It does that by (among other things) not exposing its cookies. Exposing the stored username in this mode does not make sense to me (but maybe I'm missing something...).
