• Open-source and client-side IRC-Client

  I'm administrating a homepage with an IRC-Webclient. At the moment, it uses a Java-client, modified to be SSL-compatible and compatible with whatever design I want to use. The usual PJIRC thing, with users wishes and concerns implemented (I'll give you SSL-PJIRC if you want - no problem. The login-script will be improved for IE6-support this weekend, means write the object tag if an old IE is found, that's it. Rest runs perfectly well). But still, the better user experience would be a client that only requires the user to enable JavaScript. So, before I go into rewriting and customizing a complete Java-IRC-solution, I'd like to ask some other people - after researching for half a year of time. The requirements are: a) Free hosting, no cgi-bin is acceptable. A lot of hosters also have CGI supported, but it doesn't allow IRC-access. So, seems you are limited to x10-hosting for CGI:IRC. b) Solution must be open source (not free as in free beer, but free as in free speech - I want to be able to read every line of the code). c) Hosting cannot be limited to Windows-hosting. Free operation systems (anything with Linux, BSD, whatever - I think you get what I mean) must be possible. d) No server-side technology. I'm limited to everything that runs client-side only. (Well, a Java-Applet does...). d) Solution must support SSL. e) The side must be able to move. Means, you register to a new free hoster, load your things up via FileZilla and the thing simply runs. No server-concerning implementations needed. f) Old browsers must be supported. From all my research, there are two ways a) Java-Applet b) Use HTML5-Websockets (it is impossible to use the JavaScript-library I found, as it depends on ActiveX - means, Windows hosting). b) means "you are going to enter very unstable content". I worked with HTML5 for month, and, well ... Though, HTML5 also is not suitable for older browsers (old browser support is an absolutely necessary requirement). PHP by the way is a server side solution ... so no line of PHP. My idea now was a Java Applet, and a fallback which again is embedded and proprietary, but only requieres JavaScript (wsirc or Mibbit are great here, whilst I prefer wsirc ... and zooming fonts that are plainly to small, but worse, cannot read the code). So my question is - with free hosting, not installation on server, plain upload - do you see and open source, complelety client-side, ssl-compatible way to use or write a client? This wouldn't be my first programming project, I'm not afraid of the code. If there was a way and I had to write it, even from scratch, I'd do. From all I know, there sadly is none. • "No Source Available" when managed exception occurs - WPF Visual Studio 2010

  for some reason, my visual studio 2010 is not loading debug symbols on my own code. i am using a default WPF application solution. with a sample WPF app i am working on, and running in Debug mode. when i go into debug, i can step through my code. BUT when exception happens in my code (i.e. throw new Exception("test")), visual studio gives me the blue blank screen with "No Source Available. No symbols are loaded blah blah.." AND i can actually "view" exception details, where it will tell me the line of code my exception occured on. so it does know what happened.. it seems. it seems to think that PDB files are not loaded. my setup: options Deubg "Enable just my code (managed only)" is checked. application properties : 1 project running in Debug x86

• Modify the Event Log Source name for an SSIS package

  I have an SQL Server integration Services (SSIS) package using the standard Event Log provider (yes, the event log! I know we can use SQL etc...) The default "Source" of the log events is "SQLISPackage100" but I want it to be something like "AppName" so that the errors are more visible between the different packages when viewing the event log (also for MOM use). Event Type: Error Event Source: SQLISPackage100 Event Category: None ... Description: Package "Foo" failed. I hope the answer is simple, I simply cannot find it, but does anyone know how to change the text of the Event Log Source name to something more meaningful? PK :-)

• How to compile all source files (default make target does not compile all of them)

  Hi, when I compile android (http://source.android.com/download) it does not compile some source files. For example there is external/bluetooth/bluez/sbc/sbc.c which is not compiled. There are also other such files. It's possible those files need not to be compiled. Or it might be that I need some special configuration to compile them. Either way, if it is possible, I'd like to compile them. Is there some way to do it? Maybe some "compile_all" make target? (I believe the reason why I want to compile all source files is not important)

• Debugging problems in Visual Studio 2005 - No source code available for the current location

  Hi all I've searched up and down Google for others with a similar problem, and while I can find the error I don't think that other people have the same base problem that I do. Basically, I had to create a project for a unit-testing environment in order to run this test suite. First, I add my original C file, compile, and then a test file (C++) is generated. I then exclude my original source from the project, include this test script (which includes the original source at the top), and then run. I can debug the test file fine, but when it jumps to the original C file I get the dreaded 'no source code available for the current location' error. Both files are located within the same location, and I compiled the original file without any issue. Anybody have any thoughts about this? Its driving me crazy!

  I have an int dependency property on my custom Textbox, which holds a backing value. It is bound to an int? property on the DataContext. If I raise the PropertyChanged event in my DataContext, and the source property's value is not changed (stays null), then the dependency property's setter is not fired. This is a problem, because I want to update the custom Textbox (clear the text) on PropertyChanged, even if the source property stays the same. However, I didn't find any binding option that does what I want (there is an UpdateSourceTrigger property, but I want to update the target here, not the source). Maybe there is a better way to inform the Textbox that it needs to clear its text, I'm open to any suggestions.

• Combine DVCS with Visual Source Safe

  I'm forced to use Visual Source Safe 2005 at work. I'd like to combine that with a DVCS, so that I can check in files locally without disrupting my co-workers if there's a bug or it doesn't compile. In my attempts with Mercurial, it works, but causes a few weird issues. Namely, it thinks someone else has checked out the files I have checked out. Here's my thoughts on how I should manage it: Disable auto-checkout. Work locally in Mercurial When I'm ready to push my changes... Clone my Mercurial repository. Update my Visual Source Safe repository Pull and merge the two repositories using Mercurial. Check everything into Visual Source Safe. Does this sound reasonable? I'm always hearing bad things about VSS, is this just asking for me to see those problems firsthand?

• How to organize the work when project needs to be re-implemented due to poor code quality?

  Hi, I have joined a very small where one main developer has been buiding the web app (.NET 4.0) during ~6 months. The project should be delivered within next 2 months. After first look at the code I can say that I would never allow it to go to production (things like catch { }, not tests at all with WebForms etc). So the code quality is incredibly low. My task is to improve that and still deliver the solution. So I plan to start with unit testing and MVC2 reimplementing most of the functionality (though using some of the existing code). I estimate that I will need about 6 weeks to catch up with the current progress and be on te same functionality level as the application will be in 6 months. The problem is that the main developer who has been working on the project does not seem to be very 'professional' and skillful (he seems to be really starting in IT and many basic things are unknown to him). It will take significant amount of time and effort to educate him how to do the proper testing, development and apply some patterns. I am ready to take responsibility for the reimplemnting the application but at the same time I don't want the main developer to be on idle but as he won't be able to significantly contribute to the better-world project at this stage I am not sure what would the best way to keep productivity high for both of us. Currently I think following solution is good enough: He proceeds doing what he does until I will catch up with him and then start working on a new project together. The problem is that of course this approach is not very productive as one developer will do better-world project while the other will proceed with what he did, effectively doing similar tasks. Can you suggest how we could better organise the work together in order to be most efficient for the overall project? Thanks, Dmitriy.

• Is there a way to avoid spaghetti code over the years?

  I've had several programming jobs. Each one with 20-50 developers, project going on for 3-5 years. Every time it's the same. Some programmers are bright, some are average. Everyone has their CS degree, everyone read design patterns. Intentions are good, people are trying hard to write good code but still after a couple of years the code turns into spaghetti. Changes in module A suddenly break module B. There are always these parts of code that no one can understand except for the person who wrote it. Changing infrastructure is impossible and backwards compatibility issues prevent good features to get in. Half of the time you just want to rewrite everything from scratch. And people more experienced than me treat this as normal. Is it? Does it have to be? What can I do to avoid this or should I accept it as a fact of life? Edit: Guys, I am impressed with the amount and quality of responses here. This site and its community rock!

• Are licenses relevant for small code snippets?

  When I'm about to write a short algorithm, I first check in the base class library I'm using whether the algorithm is implemented in it. If not, I often do a quick google search to see if someone has done it before (which is the case, 19 times out of 20). Most of the time, I find the exact code I need. Sometimes it's clear what license applies to the source code, sometimes not. It may be GPL, LGPL, BSD or whatever. Sometimes people have posted a code snippet on some random forum which solves my problem. It's clear to me that I can't reuse the code (copy/paste it into my code) without caring about the license if the code is in some way substantial. What is not clear to me is whether I can copy a code snippet containing 5 lines or so without doing a license violation. Can I copy/paste a 5-line code snippet without caring about the license? What about one-liner? What about 10 lines? Where do I draw the line (no pun intended)? My second problem is that if I have found a 10-line code snippet which does exactly what I need, but feel that I cannot copy it because it's GPL-licensed and my software isn't, I have already memorized how to implement it so when I go around implementing the same functionality, my code is almost identical to the GPL licensed code I saw a few minutes ago. (In other words, the code was copied to my brain and my brain after that copied it into my source code).

• Using a single visual studio 2005 solution with multiple source control applications

  In my recent SO question I was helped tremendously in using git as a front-end to ClearCase. However actually trying the suggested answer(s) led to further complications. Visual Studio keeps a reference to the used source control provider in both the .sln as well as the .csproj files. I tried resolving this issue by keeping a modified copy of the .sln with the source control provider paragraph removed but this did not help since each project also has some source control provider information. I don't want to keep private copies of all the projects since this would be a maintenance nightmare. Do any of you have suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

  Am adding an Entity Data Model to an ASP.NET website. When i Add New Item to the website and select ADO.NET Entity Data Model, am asked for the model name and language. I go a head and select Visual Basic as the language, the model is added and the site can compile with out any issues. however, the model it adds a ModelName.Designer.cs source file, instead of a ModelName.Designer.vb source file. am thinking this is strange as its happening with only one of my website. my other sites have .vb designer source file for their Entity Data Models. The site still compiles with out any errors but am afraid some thing is not right. any one experienced this?, is this normal behavior?

  assuming I running Scala 2.8.0 RC1, the following scala code should print out the content of the file "c:/hello.txt" for ( line<-Source.fromPath( "c:/hello.txt" ).getLines ) println( line ) However, when I run it, I get the following error <console>:10: error: missing arguments for method getLines in class Source; follow this method with `_' if you want to treat it as a partially applied function Error occured in an application involving default arguments. val it = Source.fromPath("c:/hello.scala").getLines From what I understand, Scala should use the default argument "compat.Platform.EOL" for "getLines". • Incongruity between Eclipse Outline/Package perspective and source code being displayed - Java error generated at runtime

  I've been debugging a Java application and have encountered something odd. When a particular method is called, Java throws a ClassNotFoundException. Unfortunately, the methods in question (the invoking and the 'missing' one) are inside a JAR file for which I have no documentation or source. To get at the source, I used JD-GUI (a Java JAR reverse engineer-er) and the JD plugin for Eclipse. As far as I can tell, the class in question exists inside the JAR file. This because JD-GUI displays it inside the JAR, and from within Eclipse I can see it listed along with the constructors and methods. My question is why the source being displayed in Eclipse is for a different class (that also exists)? This program was built with Ant - is it possible the problem lies there?   I recently discover the LLVM (low level virtual machine) project, and from what I have heard It can be used to performed static analysis on a source code. I would like to know if it is possible to extract the different function call through function pointer (find the caller function and the callee function) in a program. I could find the kind of information in the website so it would be really helpful if you could tell me if such an library already exist in LLVM or can you point me to the good direction on how to build it myself (existing source code, reference, tutorial, example...). EDIT: With my analysis I actually want to extract caller/callee function call. In the case of a function pointer, I would like to return a set of possible callee. both caller and callee must be define in the source code (this does not include third party function in a library).

• Flex Builder 3 executing old source codes

  I'm facing this problem again and again, but can't find any solution (except mine, which is not as a good one I guess). Don't know why, sometimes Flex Builder executes old source codes after making changes. While debugging I see how it steps through a source (e.g. changing local variables) which does not exist (even if I delete all that block or function). My way to solve that is to delete the project (backing up the source codes of course) and create a new one, add the backed up sources to the project and rebuild. It starts to work as it should work, but this way is not as comfortable, especially if sources are on a remote machine and you need to configure .net back-end. Anyone knows how to solve?

  I cloned some of the trees from the Android Open Source Project to take a look at the code, but I can't build them because they reference classes which don't seem to exist. For instance, the music application here references android.media.MediaFile which according to the package summary does not exist, as well as things like ArrayListCursor which has an old javadoc around but is absent in current documentation. So is the open source project disjoint from the released SDK? Also, is there a way to build these open source packages with the current SDK? Thanks, -JQP

• C# WebClient - View source question

  I'm using a C# WebClient to post login details to a page and read the all the results. The page I am trying to load includes flash (which, in the browser, translates into HTML). I'm guessing it's flash to avoid being picked up by search engines??? The flash I am interested in is just text (not an image/video) etc and when I "View Selection Source" in firefox I do actually see the text, within HTML, that I want to see. (Interestingly when I view the source for the whole page I do not see the text, within HTML, that I want to see. Could this be related?) Currently after I have posted my login details, and loaded the HTML back, I see the page which does NOT show the flash HTML (as if I had viewed source for the whole page).   Hi, i have the following situation, i have a Reporting layer(stand alone) in asp.net application(NOT website, this means NO App_Code folder exists), and i want just to create Object Data Source to take an Object in a separate layer(lets say from Data Access Layer), and then to use that Object Data Source to create a report, i have spent my whole day working around that, tons of work around's and articles on the web, but does not mention what i really want to do, any answer is appriciated... just to make things more clear here, assume the following: i have a solution with the follwoing layers, UI Reporting(has NO Employees object) just a reference Business Logic Data Access Layer(Employees--GetEmployees(), all i need is as mentioned above, i want to create Object Data Source from Reporting layer, to take Employee object from DAL, and then use it's GetEmployees method to be added to report, i think its more clear now, since also Reporting layer has NO App_Code folder.

• sql data source re binding question

  In my gridview after an insert operation has been done I am filtering the sqldatasource by ID. I am getting an error that the item drop down box selected value is not in the list. To test my theory I created a new sql data source with only the select statement and after the insert operation I am binding it to my grid view and filtering by Id and I get my result. The question Having a second data source is not the solution so is it possible that there is some way to use sqldatasource1? what I tried is sqldatasource.databind() and gridview.databind() on the inserted and inserting metheds in many test cases but still that doesnt work. I dont have any filters applied on the original data source?
