  • Lightest way to run Google Hangouts Chrome app on Mac

    - by jadengore
I recently transitioned to Safari because I'm really tired of how Chrome hogs memory and drains my battery like crazy. The only thing that has been keeping the Chrome icon open is the Hangouts plugin. Basically, I am looking for the lightest way to run Hangouts on my Mac. By light, I mean the least amount of RAM usage, and preferably a way to do it without Chrome open/light version of Chrome that only opens extensions. Any suggestions? EDIT: Another thing I noticed was that Hangouts ignores your default browser if links are sent to you by chat, and when clicked they open in Chrome. My question doesn't relate to this at all, but I found it interesting...

  • How to fix Asus Eee PC 900 startup issues after failure?

    - by EBrown
My Asus Eee PC 900 shows no signs of life. I push the power button and get no response from anything. No lights, no power, no boot-up screen. It has been like this since I received it from a friend. I asked her what happened and she said that smoke came from the keyboard, it shut down and hasnt turned on since. I have tried removing and cleaning the RAM, the computer charger still connects and works, but the battery receives no charge and the computer won't power on. Any ideas as to what is going on?

  • mysql is not using multiple cpus

    - by mhost
Our MySQL server has been using a lot of CPU lately (it's reached 100% several times and stays there for a while) and I noticed that it the CPU load is all on one core of one cpu. I was hoping to spread that out to all 4 on my server. I have been tweaking the MySQL settings to use more ram and less cpu, but it still occasionally reaches very high CPU usage. It seems like everything about the topic refers to thread_concurrency (which I've read is a solaris only setting). What can I do in Linux? Thanks.

  • I need a wirless interenet card thingy for my stationary computer

    - by user60859
Going to move my stationary computer and hook it up to the TV. Which is far away from the wireless router. So i'm going to need a way to go on the Internet wirelessly from my stationary computer. I was looking at some of those.. wireless pci adapter things. But i have no idea which one would be compatible with my computer. How can i tell? oh i have a pentium 4, Windows XP like 600 megs of ram in case any of that matters.

  • Is there any way to automatically prevent running out of memory?

    - by NoahY
I am often running out of memory on my VPS ubuntu server. I wish there was a way to simply restart apache2 when it starts running out of memory, as that seems to solve the problem. Or am I just too lazy to fix the problem? I do have limited memory on the server... Okay, more information: I'm running apache2 prefork, here are my memory settings (i've been tweaking them...): StartServers 3 MinSpareServers 1 MaxSpareServers 5 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 1000 The VPS has 1 GB of ram, running ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. As for scripts, I have a wordpress network with 5 blogs, an install of AskBot (a python/django stackexchange clone), and an install of MediaWiki that isn't really used. There is also a homebrewed mp3 script that accesses the getid3 library to display information on lists of podcasts, and it seems to be throwing some php errors, not sure if that's the culprit...

  • How to make MySQL utilize available system resources, or find "the real problem"?

    - by anonymous coward
This is a MySQL 5.0.26 server, running on SuSE Enterprise 10. This may be a Serverfault question. The web user interface that uses these particular queries (below) is showing sometimes 30+, even up to 120+ seconds at the worst, to generate the pages involved. On development, when the queries are run alone, they take up to 20 seconds on the first run (with no query cache enabled) but anywhere from 2 to 7 seconds after that - I assume because the tables and indexes involved have been placed into ram. From what I can tell, the longest load times are caused by Read/Update Locking. These are MyISAM tables. So it looks like a long update comes in, followed by a couple 7 second queries, and they're just adding up. And I'm fine with that explanation. What I'm not fine with is that MySQL doesn't appear to be utilizing the hardware it's on, and while the bottleneck seems to be the database, I can't understand why. I would say "throw more hardware at it", but we did and it doesn't appear to have changed the situation. Viewing a 'top' during the slowest times never shows much cpu or memory utilization by mysqld, as if the server is having no trouble at all - but then, why are the queries taking so long? How can I make MySQL use the crap out of this hardware, or find out what I'm doing wrong? Extra Details: On the "Memory Health" tab in the MySQL Administrator (for Windows), the Key Buffer is less than 1/8th used - so all the indexes should be in RAM. I can provide a screen shot of any graphs that might help. So desperate to fix this issue. Suffice it to say, there is legacy code "generating" these queries, and they're pretty much stuck the way they are. I have tried every combination of Indexes on the tables involved, but any suggestions are welcome. Here's the current Create Table statement from development (the 'experimental' key I have added, seems to help a little, for the example query only): CREATE TABLE `registration_task` ( `id` varchar(36) NOT NULL default '', `date_entered` datetime NOT NULL default '0000-00-00 00:00:00', `date_modified` datetime NOT NULL default '0000-00-00 00:00:00', `assigned_user_id` varchar(36) default NULL, `modified_user_id` varchar(36) default NULL, `created_by` varchar(36) default NULL, `name` varchar(80) NOT NULL default '', `status` varchar(255) default NULL, `date_due` date default NULL, `time_due` time default NULL, `date_start` date default NULL, `time_start` time default NULL, `parent_id` varchar(36) NOT NULL default '', `priority` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '9', `description` text, `order_number` int(11) default '1', `task_number` int(11) default NULL, `depends_on_id` varchar(36) default NULL, `milestone_flag` varchar(255) default NULL, `estimated_effort` int(11) default NULL, `actual_effort` int(11) default NULL, `utilization` int(11) default '100', `percent_complete` int(11) default '0', `deleted` tinyint(1) NOT NULL default '0', `wf_task_id` varchar(36) default '0', `reg_field` varchar(8) default '', `date_offset` int(11) default '0', `date_source` varchar(10) default '', `date_completed` date default '0000-00-00', `completed_id` varchar(36) default NULL, `original_name` varchar(80) default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`), KEY `idx_reg_task_p` (`deleted`,`parent_id`), KEY `By_Assignee` (`assigned_user_id`,`deleted`), KEY `status_assignee` (`status`,`deleted`), KEY `experimental` (`deleted`,`status`,`assigned_user_id`,`parent_id`,`date_due`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 And one of the ridiculous queries in question: SELECT users.user_name assigned_user_name, registration.FIELD001 parent_name, registration_task.status status, registration_task.date_modified date_modified, registration_task.date_due date_due, registration.FIELD240 assigned_wf, if(LENGTH(registration_task.description)>0,1,0) has_description, registration_task.* FROM registration_task LEFT JOIN users ON registration_task.assigned_user_id=users.id LEFT JOIN registration ON registration_task.parent_id=registration.id where (registration_task.status != 'Completed' AND registration.FIELD001 LIKE '%' AND registration_task.name LIKE '%' AND registration.FIELD060 LIKE 'GN001472%') AND registration_task.deleted=0 ORDER BY date_due asc LIMIT 0,20; my.cnf - '[mysqld]' section. • Any way to tell apart a CPU defect from a mainboard defect?

    - by Pekka
I have a fairly modern desktop computer, an AMD Athlon II X2 based silent PC, that does not work. When turned on, it will start physically (all fans are rotating, disks start up...) but not give a signal on any of the graphics ports (DVI, VGA, and HDMI, I tried all three). Also, the reset button does not seem to have any effect. I have stripped the mainboard bare of all SATA connections, extension cards, and the one 2GB RAM chip to eliminate them as the problem source, but to no avail, so I think it's fair to assume it's either the mainboard or the processor that are at fault. However, I have neither a replacement mainboard, nor a replacement processor handy to identify which one is broken. The cause of the defect is unknown, so for all I know, it could be both. Therefore, I'm reluctant to buy replacement hardware blindly before knowing more. Is there any way to further diagnose (or at least get some indication) which component is broken without buying replacement hardware?

  • Apache stops serving requests when connections increase

    - by Gunjan
The values for MaxClients, ServerLimit etc parameters are quite high (4000). Available RAM on the server is high too (~8G). Load average remains below 1 on a 24 core CPU. But when the number of visitors on the website increase apache just stops serving requests. The apache error log is blank and access log shows no more requests coming in. Restarting apache makes it work again until the number of requests increases again. Any ideas where to start looking? UPDATE Getting the below errors in apache error log on running it with LogLevel Debug [info] server seems busy, (you may need to increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 32 children, there are 479 idle, and 1027 total children

  • Running Debian as a Virtual Machine Host

    - by Tone
I have a need to run a linux server to host subversion, bugzilla over Apache and also act as a file and print server. I also have a need to host Windows Server 2008 virtual machines for development purposes (I'm a .NET guy). The machine I have is a dual core AMD 2.5 Ghz w/2GB RAM. So here are my questions: 1) Should I run Debian (or some other distro) as the base AND create a Debian VM to host subversion, bugzilla and be my file/print server? or is it ok to use Debian as both my VM host and for those other reasons? 2) VMWare has a free server edition, Virtual Box also is another free option. Which one of these is better suited for what I need to do? Are there any other free (or inexpensive) alternatives out there? 3) Will I need a GUI with Debian in order to manage my VMs? 4) Can I run VMs without a GUI to conserve system resources?

  • In Process Explorer is it possible change scaling of activity graph the be able to further analyse graph?

    - by therobyouknow
Is there any way to zoom in, in the System Internals Process Explorer graph? Background I'm trying to work out why my PC freezes/locks up for about a second (the pointer does not move) every so often. This has only been happening for the last 2 days. There is a very narrow spike associated with the freeze, but it's hard to hover over it an analyse what is causing it. My PC spec: ThinkPad X201S 1440x900 i7 2.0GHz 8Gb RAM, 256GB Samsung 840Pro SSD, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit CalDigit USB 3.0 ExpressCard 34, Ultrabase X200 with DisplayPort to HDMI

  • Dell Inspiron 530 - SSD Worth it?

    - by DrFredEdison
I'm going to be upgrading my Dell Inspiron 530 (2.0 Ghz Intel Dual Core CPU, 3 GB RAM) to windows 7 soon, and rather than backup and reformat my existing drive, I'm planning on getting a 2nd drive to replace my current primary, and moving it to a secondary. Thus, this seems like an excellent time to get a solid-state drive, if its going to be worth it. As far as I can tell this machine has a SATA-I controller, and I'm unsure if I'll see a noticeable performance increase with an SSD without going to SATA-II. So I have a three part question here given all that: Will spending the money on a SSD be worth it if hook it into a SATA-I controller? Is it reasonable to upgrade the controller on this machine to a SATA-II controller? Given that this PC is kind of old to begin with, am I better off performance wise to just stick with a faster HDD?

  • Motherboard not recognizing memory anymore

    - by root
I bought some new RAM and installed it on my motherboard. But, the BIOS would not post. There's an LED on my motherboard that shows error codes, and it showed the error: No usable memory detected. So, I removed the new memory and reinstalled the old memory, thus restoring the computer back to its original configuration. But, the BIOS still would not post, still giving the error: No usable memory detected. I've ensured that the memory and power headers are seated properly. I've tried all possible combinations of memory slots, and I've also reset the CMOS, but the error remains the same. The computer was working fine before I tried upgrading the memory, and I originally assembled the computer myself. What are some possible causes of this problem?

  • Hardware changes to require XP Activation ? (for a Virtual Machine)

    - by NVRAM
I have WXP-64 running on a VM and, for testing and performance reasons, I would like to occasionally change the allocations for it. Changes might include: Number of CPU cores, Amount of RAM Add/remove network adapters. But I'm concerned that XP will demand re-activation and that I might eventually have licensing issues if I do this. So, can anyone tell me: What kind of changes trigger re-activation in XP? Is there limits or caveat with regard to re-activation? I've perused this question and the article it references, but wanted more recent and verified info. (FWIW, I'm not trying to cheat: the OS copy was purchased explicitly for the VM.)

  • How to increase the disk cache of Windows 7

    - by Mark Christiaens
Under Windows 7 (64 bit), I'm reading through 9000 moderately sized files. In total, there is more than 200 MB of data. Using Java (JDK 1.6.21) I'm iterating over the files. The first 1400 or so go at full speed but then speed drops off to 4ms per file. It turns out that the main cost is incurred simply by opening the files. I'm opening the files using new FileInputStream (and of course closing them in time to avoid file leaks). After some investigating, I see that Windows' disk cache is using only 100 MB or so of RAM although I have 8 GiB available. I've tried increasing the cache size using the CacheSet tool but any values I provide are considered out of range. I've also tried enabling the LargeSystemCache registry key but (after rebooting) the CacheSet tool still indicates I'm using 100 MB of cache (and doesn't increase during the test run). Does anybody have any suggestions to "encourage" Windows 7 to cache my 9000 files?

  • Server Requirement and Cost for an android Application [duplicate]

    - by CagkanToptas
This question already has an answer here: How do you do load testing and capacity planning for web sites? 3 answers Can you help me with my capacity planning? 2 answers I am working on a project which is an android application. For my project proposal, I need to calculate what is my server requirements to overcome the traffic I explained below? and if possible, I want to learn what is approximate cost of such server? I am giving the maximum expected values for calculation : -Database will be in mysql (Average service time of DB is 100-110ms in my computer[i5,4GB Ram]) -A request will transfer 150Kb data for each request on average. -Total user count : 1m -Active user count : 50k -Estimated request/sec for 1 active user : 0.06 -Total expected request/second to the server = ~5000 I am expecting this traffic between 20:00-1:00 everyday and then this values will decrease to 1/10 rest of the day. Is there any solution to this? [e.g increasing server capacity in a specific time period everyday to reduce cost]

  • Is it safe to use up all memory on linux server, not leaving anything for the cache?

    - by Temnovit
I have a CentOS server fully dedicated to MySQL 5.5 (with innodb tables mostly). Server has 32 GB RAM, SSD disks, and avarage memory usage looks like this: So about 25GB is in use and about 6.5GB is cached. I am experiencing performance problems with WRITE queries, so I was thinking, is this the optimal cache size? I might increase innodb buffer size, so that linux cache would become smaller, or decrease it, so it would be bigger. What is the optimal used/cached memory balance for busy MySQL server on linux?

  • When computer turns on: keyboard/mouse/monitor don't work?

    - by dave
the computer is barely good,at least i think..features Intel core 2 4 GB ram Nvidia Radeon 9600 512 mb Gigabite motherboad (the others i can't remember).. Used this computer for 3 years with no problem...The problem started one day after while it froze everything, then I shut down with removing the electricity power. A few hours later, I tried to log in to the computer but nothing moved. Nor keyboard nor mouse nor monitor worked, I was thinking that should be a delay so I left it some time. After a minute it turned off without my help around 30 seconds then it turned on automatically, but was the same problem like before and it goes again and again...any suggestions? If more info/specs required, let me know.

  • Why can't I open programs after watching youtube videos for a while?

    - by manjivsanotsu
I have recently built a new PC, and it worked fine for a while (1-2 months of no problems whatsoever). However in the recent weeks I noticed that after I watched some youtube videos and closed everything, I can no longer do anything except move the mouse and expand the Startup Menu. If I click on any of the programs on the Start Menu or type a program on the Run text box, it won't open anything. I can't open taskmgr, or windows explorer, or even shut down the PC. I don't have anything else running when I'm watching videos except ZoneAlarm and Avast. The only workaround I can do when this happens is a forced shutdown (holding the power button of my PC), and restart if I wanted to do anything more. But this happens a lot - about 4-5 times a week so I'm worried it would fry up my hardware if I keep on doing this. • Limiting memory usage and mimimizing swap thrashing on Unix / Linux

    - by camelccc
I have a few machines that I machine that I use for running large numbers of jobs where I try to limit the number of jobs so as not to exceed the available RAM of the machine. Occasionally I mis-estimate how much memory some of the jobs will take, and the machine starts thrashing the swap file. I resolve this by sending the kill -s STOP to one of the jobs so that it can get swapped out. Does anyone know of a utility that will monitor a server for processes by a specific name, and then pause the one with the smallest memory footprint is the total memory consumption reaches a desired threshold so that the larger ones can run and complete with a minimum of swap file thrashing? Paused processes then need to be resumed once some existing processes have completed.

  • Performance Drop Lingers after Load [closed]

    - by Charles
Possible Duplicate: How do you do Load Testing and Capacity Planning for Databases I'm noticing a drop in performance after subsequent load tests. Although our cpu and ram numbers look fine, performance seems to degrade over time as sustained load is applied to the system. If we allow more time between the load tests, the performance gets back to about 1,000 ms, but if you apply load every 3 minutes or so, it starts to degrade to a point where it takes 12,000 ms. None of the application servers are showing lingering apache processes and the number of database connections cools down to about 3 (from a sustained 20). Is there anything else I should be looking out for here?
