• Macbook (non-pro, late 2010) Power Management Issues relating to Nvidia-Current drivers

  I have tried many potential solutions but to no avail! (this is going to be a long post) Essentially, when I first install ubuntu (I have tested 10.11-12.04 beta) I can change the brightness of the macbook backlight. One of the first things I usually do once my machine finishes installing is enter "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current" into the terminal to get my Nvidia graphics card set up. Before I install nvidia-current power management works flawlessly. After installing nvidia-current my graphics driver works mostly properly (more on that later). When I press F1 or F2 notify osd pops up and shows icon for the backlight along with a meter which changes according to how much I press F1 or F2, but the backlight does not change brightness at all. Two supplementary facts: when I am running off of battery power the backlight does not dim ever, also changing the backlight brightness through the terminal does not work (it recognizes the command but changes nothing). • Installing Perl modules and dependencies with non-root and without CPAN [migrated]

  I have been writing Perl scripts for my work and the machine that I have been given to work on makes installing Perl modules difficult: We cannot have gcc on my machine for security reasons, so I cannot use CPAN to install modules, for most modules. I do not have access to the root account. Usually, when I want to install a module, I put in a request and I have to wait a day or two before it gets installed. I know that nobody would have a problem with me installing them myself, so to save everyone's time and my sanity I would like to install them myself. It's just an issue of how to best do that. I have talked to various people and they said to use an RPM to install them (to get around not having gcc). However, when trying to install modules from RPMs, it does not handle the dependencies so I would manually need to handle the dependencies, which could take a while. How can I best install Perl modules with these limitations?

• 2D non-tile based map editor

  I am currently developing a relatively simple 2D, topdown oriented adventure game for the iPhone and was wondering what would be the easiest way to create the maps for my game. I figured I would need some kind of visual editor that would give me immediate feedback and would allow me to place all objects in the world exactly where I want them. I could then load the saved representation of the world I create in the editor in my game. So, I am looking for a simple map editor that allows me to do this. All the objects in my game are simply textured rectangles build up from two triangles. All I need to be able to do is position different rectangles/objects in the map, and give them a texture. I am using texture atlases, so it would be useful to be able to assign portions of textures to the objects. I then need to be able to extract all the objects from the saved representation of my maps, together with the name/identifier of the texture(atlas) they use, and the area of the texture atlas. I have looked at some tile-based map editors like Tiled and Ogmo, but they don't seem to be able to do what I want. Any suggestions? EDIT: a more concrete example: something like the GameMaker level editor, but then with added export functionality in a handy format.

  I am trying to redirect www.domain.com or domain.com to www.domain.com/temp.html I am using the following code: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*$ RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/www\.domain\.com\/temp\.html" [R=301,L] That works however I do not want to redirect IP. So if someone types in the static IP of the domain then I do not want them to be redirected to www.domain.com/temp.html Anyone have the code to take care of this?

  I know many people have complained about the almost invisible and not usable scrollbars in recent versions of Ubuntu, even after removing or disabling the default overlay scrollbars. I wonder how can I easily change their color AND width. I have a 13.3 inches monitor with a 1600*900 resolution and I can barely see them, as you can see in these images: I already changed Firefox, LibreOffice and some other software's scrollbars using GNOME Color Chooser: By the way, I'm using Unity. • Flash Webcam non responsive Ubuntu 11.10

  I've got the same problem as this gentleman: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+question/176541 Where the webcam settings / access does not work at all / is completely unresponsive in Ubuntu 11.10. I've tried webcam access in Facebook, Google+, my own code + a number of tutorials/demos and none work. What happens is the settings dialogue is completely unresponsive. Clicking tabs or buttons does nothing. In the question linked to a suggested answer is to run Unity 2D. Unfortunately this does not work for me (the exact same thing happens). I've also tried Gnome 3 which also does not work. Note that it is only the webcam settings that don't work. YouTube videos and annoying banners work just fine. Does anyone know of a workaround for this (except going back to 11.04) or if they've fixed this in 12.04? - also, are any of you experiencing the same thing?

• Version control and data provenance in charts, slides, and marketing materials that derive from code ouput

  I develop as part of a small team that mostly does research and statistics stuff. But from the output of our code, other teams often create promotional materials, slides, presentations, etc. We run into a big problem because the marketing team (non-programmers) tend to use Excel, Adobe products, or other tools to carry out their work, and just want easy-to-use data formats from us. This leads to data provenance problems. We see email chains with attachments from 6 months ago and someone is saying "Hey, who generated this data. Can you generate more of it with the recent 6 months of results added in?" I want to help the other teams effectively use version control (my team uses it reasonably well for the code, but every other team classically comes up with many excuses to avoid it). For version controlling a software project where the participants are coders, I have some reasonable understanding of best practices and what to do. But for getting a team of marketing professionals to version control marketing materials and associate metadata about the software used to generate the data for the charts, I'm a bit at a loss. Some of the goals I'd like to achieve: Data that supported a material should never be associated with a person. As in, it should never be the case that someone says "Hey Person XYZ, I see you sent me this data as an attachment 6 months ago, can you update it for me?" Rather, data should be associated with the code and code-version of any code that was used to get it, and perhaps a team of many people who may maintain that code. Then references for data updates are about executing a specific piece of code, with a known version number. I'd like this to be a process that works easily with the tech that the marketing team already uses (e.g. Excel files, Adobe file, whatever). I don't want to burden them with needing to learn a bunch of new stuff just to use version control. They are capable folks, so learning something is fine. Ideally they could use our existing version control framework, but there are some issues around that. I think knowing some general best practices will be enough though, and I can handle patching that into the way our stuff works now. Are there any goals I am failing to think about? What are the time-tested ways to do something like this?

• In Ubuntu 13.10, none of the hotkeys of LibreOffice works in non-English keyboard layout

  In Ubuntu 13.10, the hotkeys/shortcut-keys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and work in English language only. While writing in any other language (i.e. any Cyrillic and/or any Bengali etc) it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc. This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04. Steps to reproduce: System Settings Text Entry. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali (Probhat)] Now launch Writer. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by pressing Ctrl+Space. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold. Error: Font weight does not get changed. Expected: Font weight should change to bold. Note: none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc. Workaround: The only way is to - change the keyboard layout to English then press desired hotkey then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali. The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only typing.

• Use TV (hdmi) with non-square pixels

  I am having a problem when I connect my LG plasma tv (with a native resolution of 1024x768 pixels) to my 12.04 laptop. The pixels (actual pixels, not the signal) of my TV are stretched so it gets his 16:9 ratio. The pixels are rectangular (1.3333x1). Everything I display from my laptop oviously get stretched (4:3 stretched to 16:9). There is a different dpi in X and Y needed for it to display properly (some kind of anamorphic mode). Default Ubuntu uses a dpi of 96x96. I can change it using xrandr, but only square eg 100x100 or 70x70. Already looked here, but it seems Ubuntu totally ignore the displaySize in xorg.conf When I use the code below to see the dpi and nothing I do changes it. The displaySize also stays the same (calculated using 96 dpi and the resolution) xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution I use the propretary ATI drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 50xx but it is the same with the Radeon drivers. My temporary solution is to use: xrandr --output DFP1 --mode 1024x768 --scale 1.333333333333x1 --output LVDS --off But with this the right side of the screen is nog accesable. This is a known problem with xrandr --scale and ubuntu. This is because of a patch for the mouse/windows not going outside the screen. I search a way to change the DisplaySize or the dpi(to something not square like 128x96) when I connect the display.

• Forwarding non-www domain to other domain with dns

  Is it possible to forward firstdomain.com to www.seconddomain.com or seconddomain.com using surely dns records? I know how to forward www.firstdomain.com to seconddomain.com (with CNAME). What I am trying to do is move my site from one domain to another (new) one, and not break all the links which use the old domain name. I can't do a 301 redirect as it's hosted on Github Pages and I don't have access to the webserver. Thanks

• Getting a lot of postmaster undeliverable notices for non-existent users

  I've had my domain (straightpathsql.com) for a few years now. I host my e-mail with Google Accounts for business and have for awhile. ALl of the sudden in the past week I am starting to get a lot of postmaster delivery fail notices from various domains, most of them involving bogus e-mail addresses at my domain ([email protected], for example)... My assumption here is that someone is trying to relay on some other host (not my hosts which are secure through google apps for business, I presume) and there isn't much I can do to stop it. But I just want to make sure there isn't something else I need to be looking at here.. An example delivery fail notice is below.. I know nothing of those addresses below and they look like garbage... (Quick edit: the reason I get these messages is I set myself up as a catch all, so it doesn't matter what e-mail you send a note to at my domain, I'll get it if the account isn't setup... All of the failure messages are sent to bogus addresses on my domain) The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable. • Non-disruptive desktop-clock?

  Hello, is there a clock application, that can be placed on your screen like a widget staying always on top but automatically fades away on mouseover enabling you to click through it on items below, (behaves pretty much like the Ubuntu notifications). I am aware, that there are screenlets and gdesklets widget apps, but those are buggy, look outdated, and do not comply with the criteria listed above. What I have in mind is a clock that is large, (digital), always visible (on top of all other windows), and does not disrupt your work (e.g. you can still click that scroll bar or button if it is just below the clock, since the clock fades away on hovering). • How can I cull non-visible isometric tiles?

  I have a problem which I am struggling to solve. I have a large map of around 100x100 tiles which form an isometric map. The user is able to move the map around by dragging the mouse. I am trying to optimize my game only to draw the visible tiles. So far my code is like this. It appears to be ok in the x direction, but as soon as one tile goes completely above the top of the screen, the entire column disappears. I have taken the center of the screen coordinates, determined which tile this corresponds to by converting the coordinates into cartesian format. I then update the entire box around the screen.

The problem I'm having is that I can't find the way to create a single Frame (not inside another window) with some other widgets inside to dinamically add them to a VBox that I already have created in Glade. • Computer science curriculum for non-CS major?

  Hi all, I would like to have some ideas for building up my foundation CS skills. I have started programming computers 10 years ago and have made a pretty good career out of it. However, I cannot stop thinking that the path that brought me here was very particular, and if something goes wrong (e.g. I get laid off) it would be harder to find a job here in the US on the same salary level, OR in a top company. The reason I say that is that I am a self-learner; my degree is not in Computer Science so although I master C/C++/Java, I do not have the formal CS and mathematical background that many other software developers (esp. here in the US) have. When I look at job interview questions from Apple, Google, Amazon, I have the impression that I'd flunk those technical interviews at some point. Don't get me wrong, I know my algorithms and data structures, but when things dive too deeply into the CS realm I am in trouble. What can I do to close the gap? I was thinking about a MSc in CS, but will I even UNDERSTAND what's going on there if I'm not a CS undergrad? Should I go back to basics and get a BSc in CS instead? I always tend to go into self-study mode when I want to learn new stuff, but I have the impression that I will need more formal education in CS if I want to have a shot at working at those kinds of companies. • How to diagram custom programming languages, non textual?

  I've used and created domain-specific languages before, plenty of times (e.g. using yacc/lex). Normally we'd start with grammar written in BNF, and a bunch of keywords. This is easy to do, easy to share. Recently, I've started working with diagrammatic programming languages - closest parallel is circuit-diagrams in electronics, where it's very difficult to express ideas in text, but very easy to express them in wiring-diagrams. This is a new and novel problem for me: how to efficiently express these mini-languages, and share concepts in them with colleagues? (i.e. how to whiteboard-program within them. Actual programming is easy - you have physical components to hand) Are there tools for this? Or good/best practices (e.g. equivalent of "always use BNF as starting point for your new DSL, and use tools like yacc to generate the parser, compiler, etc"). My googlefu is proving weak - all I get is false positives for wiring diagrams, and UML editors (since these are custom languages, UML doesn't seem to help)

• Ensuring non conflicting components in a modular system

  So lets say we are creating a simple "modular system" framework. The bare bones might be the user management. But we want things like the Page Manager, the Blog, the Image Gallery to all be "optional" components. So a developer could install the Page Manager to allow their client to add a static home page and about page with content they can easily edit with a wysiwyg editor. The developer could then also install the Blog component to allow the client to add blog entries. The developer could then also install the Gallery component to allow the client to show off a bunch of images. The thing is, all these components are designed to be independent, so how do we go about ensuring they don't clash? E.g. ensuring the client doesn't create a /gallery page with the Page Manager and then wonder why the gallery stopped working, or the same issue with the Blog component, assuming we allow the users to customize the URL structure of the blog (because remember, the Page Manager doesn't necessarily have to be there, so we might not wan't our blog posts to be Date/Title formatted), likewise our clients aren't always going to be happy to have their pages under pages/title formatting. My core question here is, when building a modular system how to we ensure that the modules don't conflict without restricting functionality? Do we just leave it up to the clients/developer using the modules to ensure they get setup in a way that does not conflict?

  I am interested how copyright law works in the case of Rapidshare, Youtube and etc. Just hypothetically speaking, what if I create a website for uploading and sharing MP3 files, and some users start uploading songs in MP3 format that are protected by copyright laws. • iptables -L lags on non localhost or anywhere address

  I am trying to configure iptables for ubuntu 10.04 and I have a problem with iptables -L lagging on rows where the destination or source address is not localhost or anywhere. The following entries will cause lag on their row: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 111 -s 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 90 -d 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT while this does not: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport localhost -s 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport localhost -d 192.168.1.14 -j ACCEPT I feel like this might be due to iptables checking to see if the ip is reachable. If not, what is the cause, if it is how can I disable it?
