• Install software with 12.04

  Just freshly installed from 12.04 after using 11.04 and dist-upgrading to 11.10 a few months back, figured a fresh installation was due. First thing I noticed is that synaptic is no longer installed by default. I've no issues with this, and assume the approach to install packages is now via the ubuntu software center. However, I notice there are a lot of packages missing. I was looking for "vagrant", which I've had to install manually with a sudo apt-get install, but was hoping to use GUI for most things. Surely there is a GUI way? I also noticed when checking for "vim", it comes up with gVim and a little note at the bottom saying "show 2 technical items", which when clicked shows the vim I was looking for. Just curious what the expected GUI way is of installing these supposed "technical packages".

  I am studying the gameloop used in Replica Island to understand a bit about Android game development. The main loop has the below logic... GameThread.java (note the variable names in sample code dont match exact source code) while (!finished) { if (objectManager != null) { renderer.waitDrawingComplete(); //Do more gameloop stuff after drawing is complete... } } I was curious to see what waitDrawingComplete actually does, but found its just an empty syncrhonized method! I guess it does nothing, am I missing something here? • Need instructions on how to create wpa_supplicant.conf and add fast_reauth=0 to it

  Like many other natty users on a university/academic network, I'm experiencing annoying frequent disconnects/hangs/delays. See, for instance here. I would like to learn how to add fast_reauth=0 to the wpa_supplicant.conf file. This file, it seems, does not exit by default, and needs to be manually created first: README You will need to make a configuration file, e.g. /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, with network configuration for the networks you are going to use. Further, I installed wpa_gui which probably needs to be launched with parameters, else it's pretty blank... What I'm hoping for is this: That creating a wpa_supplicant.conf file with fast_reauth=0 in it, saving it to the relevant path, will work and make my uni wireless (more or even completely) stable. I read mixed reviews about wicd (as an alternative to the network manager). Also note that on my basic wlan at home (with bog-standard wpa encryption) the connection is stable. Thanks!

• Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

• What is the best freeware app for Windows to mount EXT4 partitions (from a GPT 4TB Disk) as RW, safely without corrupting the EXT4 partition?

  My Computer is set up as Dualboot Windows and Ubuntu. I have 1 OS drive, and 1 hard drive with a /backup partition (which has all my family photos and data) and it is ext4. Also note... it is EXT4, and it is GPT, and it is 4TB size. Anyway, Windows can not mount the /backup ext4 partition. What software/freeware do you reccomend for Windows? Preferrably looking for someone with experiance using it for a long time and not have problems with EXT4 partition which is a 4TB, GPT Disk. Thank you for your advice and guidance! Always, appreciate everyones help at askubuntu, you guys are the best. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu 13.10 vs 12.04 LTS

  I am migrating my workflow to ubuntu from windows. I have a macbook pro at home and I really enjoy being able to use the workspaces feature on ubuntu to increase my productivity. As myself being someone that isn't very familiar with doing command line things and hasn't worked with linux a whole lot other than doing basic commands like cd, ls, rm, screen, and sudo. I was wondering what you think would be the best choice for a ubuntu version. I am looking for ease of use as well as stability. I spend most of my time working with eclipse, as well as writing documents. On a side note, right now I have a pretty high end workstation, but I am using a crappy notebook 2.5 inch 1TB hard drive for my system. Would it be worth it to switch to a top of the line SSD, or would the difference not really be noticeable? How difficult would it be for a newcommer to setup the system with the os and important folders running on a SSD and then other folders for storage running on a HD.

  Does anyone have experience with the XFX Radeon HD 6870 on Ubuntu 11.10? I've googled and the best I could find was someone getting the card to 'work' on linux. Nothing specific about ubuntu and this card. Specifically, I want to be able to use the full 1900x1200 resolution and watch 1080p movies. If yes, was it very complicated to get working? YOu can even ask yourself if (heavy) internet (social) users are an subculture and programmers a culture within. I think it might be an interesting discussion, hope you like it!   According to a popular SO post is it considered a bad practice to prefix table names. At my company every column is prefixed by a table name. This is difficult for me to read. I'm not sure the reason, but this naming is actually the company standard. I can't stand the naming convention, but I have no documentation to back up my reasoning. All I know is that reading AdventureWorks is much simpler. In this our company DB you will see a table, Person and it might have column name: Person_First_Name or maybe even Person_Person_First_Name (don't ask me why you see person 2x) Why is it considered a bad practice to pre-fix column names? Are underscores considered evil in SQL as well? Note: I own Pro SQL Server 2008 - Relation Database design and implementation. References to that book are welcome.

• does unused vertices in a 3D object affect performance?

  For my game I need to generate a mesh dynamically. now I'm wondering does it have a noticeable affect in fps if I allocate more vertices than what I'm actually using or not? and does it matter if I'm using DirectX or OpenGL? edit final output will be a w*h cell grid, but for technical issues it's much more easier for me to allocate (w+1)*(h+1) vertices. sure I'll only use w*h vertices in indexing, and I know there is some memory wasting there, but I want to know if it also affect fps or not? (note that mesh is only generated once in each time you play the game)

I know a bit of Perl and Python and I am looking to learn programming in more depth so that once I get the hang of it I can start developing applications and then websites. I would like to know of an algorithm (sequence of steps :)) that could describe my approach towards learning programming in general. I have posted small questions on Perl/Python and I have recieved great help from everyone. Note:- I am not in a hurry to learn. I know it takes time and that's fine. • Is OpenGL 1.x deprecated?

  I'm familiar with OpenGL 1.x. I typically use SDL with OpenGL 1.4 on Linux, and I've never run into problems, even on my modern system. I've read on the OpenGL site about deprecation and compatibility contexts, but I'm still unclear as to whether it's safe to continue to use old versions of OpenGL, as opposed to using old features in newer versions. When functionality is marked deprecated ... future versions of OpenGL may remove it. Does deprecation simply imply that those functions can't be used alongside newer features? More specifically, are there any systems today (other than embedded) where OpenGL 1.x isn't available? The old-skool stuff like, glBegin, glEnd, glDrawPixels, etc. Note: I'm not a professional games developer, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance. I'm working on a mostly 2D game that I would like to keep multi-platform, supporting at least Linux, Mac, and Windows.

• How do I reset the password for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Wubi in the D: drive of my PC. I have Vista installed in the C: drive. I have forgotten my password for my Ubuntu Admin Account. I only have only access to the Guest login. Please note, I don't see any GRUB menu and get only Vista & Ubuntu as options while booting. I can't get into Recovery Mode of Ubuntu using Shift, ESC or any other way. Please let me know how to reset the password.

• Is dual booting ubuntu and fedora/openSUSE as easy as popping in a liveCD?

  I wish to dual boot ubuntu (currently installed) with fedora and/or openSUSE (fedora for vanilla gnome and SUSE for a good KDE experience). I do not know much about dual booting and grub. Do I only have to put in the liveCD and install side by side? Or do I have to partition and stuff? Also, is there an easy way to remove one if I do not want it? Please note that I do not want them on the same /home partition, I want them to have a different one each. (and also if there is a way that is mostly graphical and user friendly, it would be most appreciated)

• Would it be practical/secure to import my GPG keys into (Open)SSH?

  I know a bit about computer security, and well as about the concept of public and private keys. I also know that both GPG and (Open)SSH use the public/private key system. My question is, is there any reason that I would not want to use my GPG keys as authentication for SSH? • How to fix indicator icons from being cut off?

  A friend of mine just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and the icons for the indicator applets all appear cut off on both the bottom and the top. See picture above. Note that the icons in the old systray/notification area on my friend's panel all still display correctly, so it's a problem with indicator clearly. My question: How can this be fixed? (I have a 10.04 system that I did a fresh install on, and I don't have this issue, so I'm guessing it's an issue with upgrading. Thanks.
