  I have an MDF and LDF file of SQL Server 2005. i attached it with SQL Server 2008 and did some change in data. now when i attached it back to sql server 2005 Express Edition it gives version error. The database 'E:\DB\JOBPERS.MDF' cannot be opened because it is version 655. This server supports version 612 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported. Could not open new database 'E:\DB\JOBPERS.MDF'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file E:\DB\Jobpers.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

  I've got a SQL Server database with the the following tables: Client (ClientID, ClientName) SalesAgent (AgentID, AgentName) Item (ItemID, Description) Purchase (PurchaseID, ClientID, Price) PurchaseSalesAgent (PurchaseID, AgentID) Each purchase is only ever one item to one client but there can have been multiple agents involved. I want to return the following list of columns: ClientName, Description, Price, Agents Where Agents is the names of all the agents involved in the purchase. Either as a comma separated list or as multiple columns with one agent in each. I'm looking for a way that's compatible with SQL Server 2000 but I'd also be interested in if there's a better way of doing it in SQL Server 2008.

  This is my script - it simply looks for the image file associated to a person record. Now the error will display if there is NO .jpg evident when the query runs. • Getting a permission error when trying to connect to sql database

  I have a sql server on a dedicated machine, running SQL 2008. I have the IP of the box, a database setup on it. I've built a small script that just does a connection test, and when I run it, I get the following error. Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I've been told by the admin that SQL remote access has been granted for my IP address. Anybody know what's wrong?

  Lets say we have 3 tables (actually I have 2 at the moment, but this example might illustrate the thought better): [Person] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Group] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Role] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [PersonGroupRole] Person_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Group_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Role_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Should any of the 3 ID's in the relation PersonGroupRole be marked as PRIMARY key or should they all 3 be combined into one composite?? whats the real benefit of doing it or not? I can join anyways as far as I know, so Person JOIN PersonGroupRole JOIN Group gives me which persons are in which Groups etc. I will be using LINQ/C#/.NET on top of SQL-express and SQL-server, so if there is any reasons regarding language/SQL that might make the choice more clear, thats the platform I ask about. Looking forward to see what answers pops up, as I have thought of these primary keys/indexes many times when making combined ones.

  Hello, Im executing sql query on my database. I have sql server 2008 installed on my D harddrive which has 55 GB free space. I have also C drive which has sth like 150 MB free (right now). While executing that query on quite a big table (16 GB) I have an error: An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Not enough disc space. I would like to know if there is any possibility that I can make Sql server to use D drive instead of C Or maybe there is any other problem with what Im doing ? Thanks for help

  Hi I am wondering is there a way to do batch updating? I am using ms sql server 2005. I saw away with the sqlDataAdaptor but it seems like you have to first the select statement with it, then fill some dataset and make changes to dataset. Now I am using linq to sql to do the select so I want to try to keep it that way. However it is too slow to do massive updates. So is there away that I can keep my linq to sql(for the select part) but using something different to do the mass update? Thanks

I Have thought of adding a node_index column, to ORDER BY, but that seem suboptimal, since that involves modifying the index of a lot of nodes when modifying the stucture. That could include adding, removing, reordering or moving nodes from some subtree to another. Is there a sql datatype for an ordered sequence, or an efficient way to emulate one? Doesn't need to be fully standard sql, I just need a solution for mssql and hopefully postgresql EDIT To make it clear, the ordering is arbitrary. Actually, the user will be able to drag'n'drop tree nodes in the GUI

  I think I need some pointers on security in SQL Server. I'm trying to restrict some of our end users from getting access to certain columns (i.e. SSN) on a table. I thought I could just use column level security to restrict access to the columns. That successfully prevented users from accessing the table directly, but I was surprised that they could still get to those columns through a view that accessed that table. I followed the tips here: http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2124/filtering-sql-server-columns-using-column-level-permissions/ Those were very helpful, but when I created a view at the end, the intern was able to access that column by default I've read that views are the best way to accomplish this, but I really don't want to go through and change all of the views and the legacy front-end application. I would rather just restrict it once on the table and if a view tries to access that column it would just fail. Is that possible or am I misunderstanding how security works in SQL Server?

If some one has added/updated a user/permissions in next day- if we run a script it should revert all the changes to the previous day status.   Hi, I'm trying to grant read-only access (in other words: select queries only) to a user account on my SQL Server 2008 R2 database. Which rights do I have to grant to the user to make this work? I've tried several kinds of combinations of permissions on the server and the database itself, but in all cases the user could still run update queries or he could not run any queries (not even select) at all. I came across this article on technet which suggests how to configure "server tasking" and says I should refer to the Windows 2003 docs for more info. I have googled Windows 2003 "server tasking" (with and without the quotes) but all I can find is more similar articles on SQL server telling me that it should be configured, not how/where you do it. I know I'm probably searching for the wrong thing - can someone please tell me how to configure it in Windows or SQL server, whichever it is?

• SQL Server 2008 CPU usage goes to 100% - troubleshooting help needed?

  I have a fairly powerful database server having SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. There is only one database on it which is being accessed from 2 servers (around 5/6 applications). The problem is as soon as applications start pointing to the database, system's CPU usage goes upto 100% with sqlserver itself using 95+%. I have checked profiler, there aren't any heavy queries running there. I have checked active connections, they are hardly 150. Still CPU usage is around 100% and applications are experiencing slow response/connection to database server are getting refused. Database grus, I really need some ideas here. Thanks.

I used the manager thing to create the database and the tables, etc and now i want to connect to it via my visual studio which is on a different machine. so how do i do that? do i need to "turn on" the sql server, do i need to do port forwarding? do i have to modify the iis or change those settings? is there a good article someone can me point me to? just to further help you help me, i understand how to connect to a datasource in visual studio my problem is more with the sql server and understanding how to properly set it up once installed. • pptp server 2003 hands out gateway from nic not dhcp server

  I have created a pptp RRAS server for a handful of clients to connect to. I would like them to use the servers default gateway (.1) for internet access. They are able to successfully connect (& see LAN) but it then cuts them off the internet. I understand that all internet traffic would be routed through the pptp server but that's ok since I have enough pipe. The problem seems to be that: the clients gateway shows as their assigned RAS ip. The clients assigned DNS settings seem to be what is set to the servers nic not what I have specified in dhcp (which is the same server). DHCP relay agent properties points to the nic DHCP is running on (192.168.100.163). .1 is gateway in nic hw properties & dhcp. I have different dns secondary & third entries on my nic properties than what dhcp is configured for. The problem is that I have a 10.10.1.x network that people can not see if they uncheck the gateway option but, they are then unable to see our other hosted sites on the internet.

• DNS manager in Windows Server 2012 Essentials - My one server appears twice

  I have a newly installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials. It works pretty good although I'm working on some DNS improvements. Something that seems a little weird is in DNS Manager, my server appears twice. Once as hostname and once as hostname.mydomain.local. They seem to be identical and locked in sync. If I change one, the other follows. Is this normal? Does anyone know why I have this? I'm talking about the top level on the navigation. The very top is DNS and then these two below. Zones, forwarders etc are below them. I've found a couple of forum posts of people asking the same thing but no useful answer. All tutorials etc I can find with screenshots show only one which makes me uncomfortable. The server was installed out of the box as standard with the wizards. I know about the recommendation not to use .local but the wizards didn't give me any other option.

  I recently moved my app to a new server - the app is written in c# against the 3.5 framework. The hardware is faster but the OS is the same (Win Server 2003). No new software is running. On the prior hardware the app would run for months with no problems. Now, in this new install, I get the following error after about 3 days, and the only way to fix it is to reboot: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a queue was full.) I have yet to find a service I can even shut down to make it work. Anyone had this before and know a solution?

  We are having a terminal server ibm x3650 with 8 gb of RAM. On many occasions, at least once in a day, we get the error "The instruction at "0x7c8199b2" refrenced memory at "0x9ddc2ade". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program. I have surfed very many sites, microsoft included, but none of them have been able to give conclusive solution for ending this problem. When we press on ok or cancel, then our ERP application (VB-MS SQL) starts to work normally. till such time the message is there, all our reports are hanged (Business Objects reports). We have already installed all the drivers of printers on the TS. Can anyone help?

  My problem is exactly this same as described here: Server 2008 R2 - Unable to install any printer drivers Options - google groups I have few Windows 2008 R2 (no SP1) servers in remote offices, mostly in Domain Controller, and many of them have problems installing ANY printer drivers. following errors show up in Event Log when adding printer driver under Print and Document Services/Print Management/Print Services/ /Drivers OR trying any other way to install drivers: EventID 215: Installing printer driver - failed, error code 0x57, HRESULT 0x80070057. See the event user data for context information. in this particular server case this is problem with Canon iRC 2380i printer with Canon Generic PCL6 Driver, but it seems to apply to any driver and any printer (tried different drivers, different versions, PCL, postscript, etc) I'm using 64 bit drivers that should be working on this platform.   We cannot seem to install Ubuntu Server with USB as it reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. My friend wants to try setting up a server so; we downloaded Ubuntu Server 10.04.4 we created a boot CD and installed ubuntu server no problem at all. But then the problem arose the hardrive we wanted to use is a 1tb sata drive and the computer orginally has 40gb IDE. So I bought a Sata to IDE and IDE to Sata converter from: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/52926/IDE-to-SATA-converter---Converts-IDE-HDD-to-SATA-inc-sata-data-and-power-cables Unfortunately this converter means I cannot plug in the IDE cable meaning I only have one IDE connection i.e CD drive has to be disconnected for the 1tb sata Hardrive to be connected. So now the 1tb drive is connected, powered it on opened the bios to make sure the hdd appeared it did as ST3ASDAPFKG (somthing like that). Fortunately the computer supports USB booting, so I read ubuntu server usb install instructions I tried: Startup Disk Creator & Unebootin Startup Disk Creator made the usb bootable with the 'ubuntu-10.04.4-server-i386.iso' All looked fine stuck the usb drive in, booted the machine up and I am quickly presented with ubuntu language choice. I hit enter to select English then I am presented with: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system I can move up and down the menu fine everything seems ok, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server', computer just hangs and screen either goes blank or locks. So I rebooted the computer loads the same menus fine, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server' hit 'enter' and the computer just restarts then brings me back to the same menu. hmmm Then I tried choosing the rest of the options separately: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system computer just restarts and back to the same ubuntu menu every-time. Grrrr At this point I wish I actually new how to command line install or something but I don't have a clue how to do that. So I tried hitting 'f6' for 'other options' and I tried them all in various combinations and individually. No Luck: (Expert mode, acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, edd=on, nodmraid, nomodeset, Free Software only) At this point I am wondering if it is a bios setting causing problems, I tried turning every option in there on off that I don't understand. No Luck. I then discovered by accident if you hit esc in the ubuntu install menu it says "you are leaving the graphical boot menu and starting the text mode interface" I hit 'Ok'. Next a prompt pops up saying 'boot:' One time it responded when I typed somthing with 'Cannot find kernal image (something like that but since then it just restarts when I hit enter in that prompt). I had a browse on the net and found someone suggesting removing quiet from install command for 'Install Ubuntu Server'. Made no difference at all just reboots... Orginal boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz quiet -- Modified boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz -- Still I cannot install Ubuntu Server by USB as it, reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. This is a real pain as we cannot take the 1tb Sata Hardrive and swap it for IDE to be able to use the cd drive. Why is is it so hard to install ubuntu server with usb? I have wasted a full day and half on this really frustrated any help would be amazing! I know the answers out there just seems a bit illusive at the moment! • Outbound HTTP performance tuning recommendations

  I'll detail my exact setup below, but general recommendations for a better web-browsing experience will be useful. A nice checklist of things to try would be great! I have 600 users on a single site with an 8MB leased line. I get a lot of moans about the performance of "the internet" (ie web-browsing). What recommendations do the community have for speeding things up without just throwing more bandwidth at it? I expect I will end up buying some more, but good management tips are always valuable. My setup is this: Cisco PIX (515E) firewall on the edge of the network. It's just doing some basic NAT, and opening up a handful of ports to various bastion hosts (aka DMZ servers). The DMZ is just a switch that the servers are plugged into. ISA 2006 Enterprise array (two servers) connecting DMZ to the internal LAN, with WebSense Web Security filtering HTTP traffic so users can't look at porn or waste bandwidth on YouTube during working hours. I've done a few things - I've just switched my internal DNS over to use root hints, which halved DNS query latency from 500ms to 250ms. Well worth doing. I'm trying to cache more aggressively, but so much more of the internet is AJAXy and doesn't cache very well as compared to five years ago. Plus the 70GB of cache which felt like a lot a few years ago really isn't any more. I'm getting about 45% cache hits by number of requests, but only about 22% by size, ie larger objects are less likely to be cached. Latency seems to be part of the problem. Is that attributable to the bandwidth problem, or are there things I can look at to try to reduce latency even on heavily-loaded bandwidth?
