  I spent last week on campus in Redmond with the SQL Server Analysis Services Maestro program. It was great to have a chance to focus on SSAS for a week. • Horible lag on Xubuntu media center setup

  I am setting up a media center running Xubuntu 11.10 as a media center. It is using the XFCE desktop enviroment. I have the NVIDIA drivers installed from the Additional Drivers program, and uninstalled all but the esennitial software. The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000. You can view detailed technical specifications here. The graphics card installed is a Geforce 8400 GS. I have installed all updates through Update Manager. What can I do to fix the horrible lag? It makes watching TV impossible.I have uploaded two videos of the lag, here and here. The second one does not have sound because the sound stops playing on some channels that lag a lot. The TV card is a Hauppage 950q USB, and the TV recording program is Kaffiene. Please help me with this, I am trying to do this to show how great Ubuntu is to the rest of the family.

• What's the location of a personal 'gtkrc' file in Ubuntu 12.04?

  Good day everyone! I am currently writting a software that makes easy to change default cursor theme with a few clicks. At this point it works well, but applications like Firefox or Lazarus IDE remain with the DMZ-White cursor, everything else is ok. I noticed that when I change the default cursor using my software, and later change the 'personalized' cursor theme using Ubuntu Tweak, it does the job, and the new theme is now applied everywhere. So, what file is need to modify in order to change 'personal' cursor theme? If my software can do this, that would be great! I found that 'gtkrc' is a file where settings of GTK+ are stored. I searched in my home folder but I can't find yet. Can you help me with this, noble people of Ubuntu? :)

• What tool do you use to organise your tasks?

  Hi, I've been a web developer for four years now and I've yet to come across a nice piece of software that allows me to manage my day to day tasks well. In theory, I should be able to just pull up a textfile and write: write test scripts check code into svn remember to go home But obviously this isnt very usable. I've tried stuff like Ta-da List but it feels quite limited. JIRA is great for bug tracking but what if I have to remember to go to the bank at 2pm. Is there anything piece of software out there that helps organise programmers? I'm really interested in hearing what you guys have to say on this one. Thanks.

• Complete Guide/Tutorials on LWJGL?

  Dont get me wrong, I finished these tutorials on http://lwjgl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page. I finished The Basics section, OpenGL 3.2 and newer section, and I looked at the Example Code section. They were great tutorials, and I have looked at the external tutorials as well. I don't know where to go from here, and OpenGL is not my strong point. Some one suggested Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming, and I didnt learn much. I looked at the port to LWJGL, but the book was on C and I couldn't really understand what the OpenGL meant. I am trying to learn 2D gaming, not 3D. Maybe later. Is there any tutorials that aren't C/C++ heavy and teach you 2D OpenGL?

  I know there are site tools to check if your webpage is alive, has compression, etc but lets not get into that. What are useful sites to paste code in and to share links to it? The three i know are http://codepad.org/ shows source and runs code online http://www.pastie.org/ share source with syntax highlighting http://jsfiddle.net/ great for JS help or for the occasional test. What else do you know of? One answer per question. I'll let lints and validators slide since you do paste code into them. Mention a weakness if you do know one so others wont be surprised or disappointed.

• Is there a term for "Use procedures that execute a single task"?

  I'm having a discussion with a fellow developer, and I'm trying to argument this in something like a short "term". SoC (Separation of Concerns) is pretty straight forward design practice, but it dwells deeper. If we want to pick on it's deep corners, we can Google it and there are plenty of articles that pop up, and after taking a glimpse, we know a lot more, and might find some examples. But, what about "Use procedures that execute a single task"? That's also a great design principle to use when writing applications and it becomes more and more rewarding, the larger the application gets. Is there a term for Use procedures that execute a single task?

• Why are so many questions closed? [closed]

  Why is there so many questions on this stackexchange site closed? I mean far more than usual. Even very high quality discussions are closed. Doesn't this high number of closed questions with high number of views and good quality of content seem like that the current policy that governs the criteria for appropriate question might be going against nature? I mean it feels as if lot of questions or discussions are everything surrounding programmer, programming, and need not be objective or seeking definitive answer. It appears lot of questions are of inquisitive nature seeking insight into other programmers and finding common subjects of interest. Is it possible for mods to relax a bit? I mean lot of great questions with [closed] tag everywhere doesn't do justice. This question in itself is a perfect example of what I am talking about and it will be closed. But I think my point is clear.

• Oracle Usability Advisory Board, Europe

  Earlier this month, I attended the first Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in Europe (held in Oracle's big campus in Thames Valley Park, Reading, in the UK). My main interest here of of course was to listen to customer's experiences and requirements in the area of user experience, focusing in on user assistance natch, but also, given my background in the translation and internationalization world, to watch out for issues in those areas that impact on the UX. I met some great people there and took away some powerful UX thoughts about where might go with the area of language in the UI, localizations, and other cultural issues. One area of special interest to me is language as part of the user experience. By language I mean terminology and style of wordings you see in interfaces and help. Are they reflective of how people really work and are used to. What is its relationship to competitiveness and productivity. An area rich in research potential for UX. • Why didn't IE8 support border-radius, evil or ignorance?

  When I think back to the time of the release of IE7, I was surprised that there wasn't border-radius support. It seems like an obviously great idea to have a css-property name for rounded corners, which can potentially make a site look less like it came from the computer stone-age. Finally, today we have IE9 and Microsoft finally decided to play ball with the rest of the world. But the question remains, why didn't Microsoft bother to support border-radius in IE8? The problem probably became obvious to the company as the growing chorus of complaints from web developers got louder after the release of IE7. Was the company so isolated or in group-think mode that they were blind for that many years? Or did Microsoft have some additional motive to suppress the border-radius property?

  Watching YouTube videos on the Wii just got a whole lot easier; YouTube’s native Wii app streamlines the process and cuts out the need for the Internet Channel browser. Previous to this release you had to use the $5 Internet Channel and the Opera Browser to access YouTube. It worked but it wasn’t elegant by any means. • Configuration of the network manager via DBus: how to set the ad hoc mode

  I have an hard nut to crack: a nice bottle of italian Chianti wine to the solver! :) To automatically configure Wifi, I first have to kill the network manager and than activate the wifi via the commandline: I do this all automatically in my application and works great. However... it is not the right way to do this. As the user has no network gui anymore to configure some other network access. A much better and transparent way would be to configure wifi directly via network manager over the DBus interface. I was able to configure it, but I wasn't able to set it to ad hoc mode... Searching the web for a while: a lot about configuration in general but nothing related to ad hoc mode. I think the only way to do figure that out is to look into the source code of the network manager...maybe someone already did it and he can answer.

• Bluetooth pairing works in 10.10 but not in 11.04

  My laptop, a Compaq Presario V2000, has a built-in Bluetooth module that has worked well since at least Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I use it to pair with headphones and a mouse. These both worked great in Ubuntu 10.10 (and still do with a live CD) but I cannot pair to any Bluetooth device in Ubuntu 11.04, even from a live CD. I can see the Bluetooth module in lspci and when I try to set up a new device from the Bluetooth indicator my computer detects all Bluetooth devices around me but pairing always fails. At the moment I'm most concerned with getting my Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 paired. • Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

  For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.

• Sound notification over SSH

  I just switched from the Konversation IRC client to the terminal based IRSSI. I'm starting IRSSI on a remote machine using GNU screen + SSH. I do not get any sound notification on new messages, which means that I've to check out IRSSI once in a while for new messages. That's not really productive, so I'm looking for an application / script that plays a sound (preferably /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Im-Irc-Event.ogg and not the annoying beep) on my machine if there is any activity. It would be great if I can disable the notification for certain channels. Or, if that's not possible, some sort of notification via libnotify, thus making it available to GNOME and KDE.

• How to cleanup a Local Repository?

  In my local repository each time i update the packages inside. The problem is: I have many versions of the same package. so, i need to delete the old versions in some way.(don't tell me to do it manually!!) Any ideas?!! Maybe a script that checks the version of each package keeping the newer version and deletind older ones can solve this issue.   In the last few months since I started learning F# I have begin to notice an increase in the number of people blogging about the language. Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

  Hello, I've been struggling with Google maps till I found that someone implemented a wrapper so that you can use Google Map as an ASP.Net user control which is a great effort indeed. You can download it from this link. However, after using it for a while, I've found out that it is storing the Google map object only once in the session and getting it from there whenever needed which was a problem for me that when you update the map in some page, you'll find it updated on another page. So, I've digged deep in the code and updated it so that it stores the map object with a unique identifier that you set it as a property in the user control object like that: this.googleMapCtrl.ControlID = Guid.NewGuid().ToString(); You can download the updated control files from here.
